<p>Meanwhile, one of Tsai's supporters took on the protesters by holding a sign that said, “Taiwan so awesome, even China can’t stop talking about us”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the two-day New York visit has been officially called a transit stopover, Beijing continues to assert it is an attempt by the US to propagate 'Taiwan independence'. Speaking to reporters in Beijing, China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Zhu Fenglian openly condemned the visit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We firmly oppose this and will definitely take measures to resolutely fight back," said the spokesperson before adding, “The trip is not so much a ‘transit’, but an attempt to seek breakthroughs and propagate ‘Taiwan independence’."</p>

<p>A day after a media report claimed that Adani Group had not repaid its loans against promoter's shares, the company has come out with a statement. Rubbishing the assertions, Adani Group said the report was 'baseless' and 'deliberately mischievous'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company said it had completed 'full prepayment' of margin-linked share-backed financing aggregating to $2.15 billion. The conglomerate added all shares pledged for such loans had also been released.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“As per the present rules, any share pledge or release is automatically reported by system driven disclosure (SDD) mechanism of the depository participant, and no separate filing is required to be made," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The company also released a comparative analysis of its pledge position on December 31, 2022, and March 27, 2023. According to the data, Adani Green Energy had reduced its position to 3.5 per cent from 4.4 per cent last year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, an article by a media portal named The Ken, citing regulatory filings claimed that the Adani group had not paid a significant portion of the promoters' shares&nbsp;that was held as collateral.</p>

<p>“Regulatory filings examined by The Ken show that banks have not yet released a large portion of its promoters’ shares, as they should have if the loans had indeed been completely repaid," read the report.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As per Indian laws, disclosures on the release of shares need to be filed with stock exchanges by lenders within two working days, and by promoters within seven working days. But neither the Adani Group nor the lenders have made these disclosures to stock exchanges," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The release of the report had a cascading effect as Adani shares quickly started tumbling. Five of the 10 Adani portfolio companies hit the lower circuit while the flagship Adani Enterprises lost over seven per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Adnan Syed, the man who spent over two decades in jail for the 1999 killing of his ex-girlfriend but was later released, has had his conviction reinstated. Adnan Syed's case was made famous by the podcast <em>Serial, </em>which had poked holes in his conviction and essentially helped in his release. But on Tuesday (March 29), a Maryland appellate court passed the judgement, after a 2-1 decision, throwing open the case again, saying the lower court had violated the right of the victim's family to attend a critical hearing in the case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Syed was convicted of the murder of Hae Min Lee but her brother Young Lee was not allowed to attend one of the key hearings, thereby violating his legal right.</p>

<p>"Because the circuit court violated Mr. Lee’s right to notice of, and his right to attend, the hearing on the State’s motion to vacate...this Court has the power and obligation to remedy those violations, as long we can do so without violating Mr. Syed’s right to be free from double jeopardy," the court observed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Accordingly, we vacate the circuit court's order vacating Mr. Syed's convictions, which results in the reinstatement of the original convictions and sentence."</p>

<p>National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the governing body of&nbsp;Unified Payment Interface (UPI) - India's prominent digital payment network -&nbsp; has announced it will be levying Prepaid Payment Instruments (PPI) fees on merchant transactions, beginning April 1.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The fee would be levied on transactions above Rs 2,000 ($24) which will result in&nbsp;an interchange at 1.1 per cent&nbsp;of the transaction value. Usually, the interchange fee is associated with card payments, used to cover the costs related to accepting, processing and authorising transactions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the broad fee of 1.1 per cent is applicable over the Rs 2000 limit, NPCI has set different merchant fee structures as well.</p>

<p>Reportedly, the interchange will be one per cent for mutual funds, insurance and railways, 0.9 per cent for supermarket, 0.7 per cent for telecom, education, agriculture and 0.5 per cent for fuel, according to the advisory.</p>

<p>Notably, the fee will not be applicable when the payment is made using a person-to-person transaction or person-to-merchant transaction.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Interchange shall not be applicable to P2P (peer to peer) and P2M (peer to merchant) transactions between “bank account and the PPI wallet,” reads the NPCI circular.</p>

<p>Barely a day after the deadly Nashville school shooting in the US, a police officer in Huntsville, Alabama lost his life while another remains hospitalised in critical condition while they were responding to a shooting call.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two officers from the&nbsp;Huntsville Police Department were responding to a call at 4:45 PM from a woman who said she had been shot. The shooter, a man who had barricaded himself inside an apartment, fired at the officers after they arrived on the scene.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The officers were transported to the hospital where one succumbed to the injuries while the other is still battling for life. As for the shooter, the police officers apprehended him a little more than an hour later around 6:20 PM and transported him to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is a devastating loss for the our department, the Huntsville community and the State of Alabama.&nbsp;We send our heartfelt condolences to the officer's family as they mourn their loved one who made the ultimate sacrifice,"&nbsp;Kirk Giles, Huntsville police chief said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The authorities advised the public to avoid the area as there was a heavy police presence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"This is a painful night for the City of Huntsville and for our police family. We are heartbroken. Words cannot express our loss. <p>A day prior to the Alabama shooting incident,&nbsp;28-year-old Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a trans person, went on a rampage and killed three children and as many adults after opening fire at The Covenant School in the Green Hills neighbourhood of Nashville, Tennessee.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Surveillance videos released by the police show Hale wielding the weapons and shooting down glass doors to enter the building. The shooter checks out different rooms before shooting down various hallways.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per reports, the shooter left behind a map and a manifesto relating to the attack. The items were revealed upon a search of the suspect's house.</p>

A day prior to the Alabama shooting incident, 28-year-old Audrey Elizabeth Hale, a trans person, went on a rampage and killed three children and as many adults after opening fire at The Covenant School in the Green Hills neighbourhood of Nashville, Tennessee. Surveillance videos released by the police show Hale wielding the weapons and shooting down glass doors to enter the building. The shooter checks out different rooms before shooting down various hallways. As per reports, the shooter left behind a map and a manifesto relating to the attack. The items were revealed upon a search of the suspect's house. The average comes down to 114 people being killed daily. <p>India's National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval took what is widely seen as pot shots at China and Pakistan while addressing NSAs and top officials of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) member countries on Wednesday in Indian capital city of New Delhi. Doval touched upon terrorism and sovereignty as the key parts of his opening remarks, apparently hinting at the two countries that have strained relations with India.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As the present chair of the grouping, Doval's statement set the tone for the meeting as Pakistan and China attended the event virtually, according to multiple media reports</p>

<p>“Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and its financing are amongst the most serious threats to international peace and security. Any act of terrorism, regardless of its motivation, is unjustifiable," said Doval, in what is seen by observers as a veiled reference to Pakistan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The NSA also took a shot at China without naming it and invoked the SCO Charter that could show the member states the path forward.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The Charter calls upon member states to have mutual respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity of states, non use of force or threat of its use in international relations, and seeking no unilateral military superiority in areas," added Doval.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He continued the subtle attacks by taking a dig at China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The 78-year-old added that India was willing to participate in regional projects, but only if there was transparency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“While expanding connectivity, it is important to ensure that such initiatives are consultative, transparent and participatory, and respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries.”</p>

<p>After the meeting of NSAs, New Delhi is expected to hold a meeting of the SCO defence ministers next month from April 27-29. The foreign ministers' meet is scheduled to be held in the western Indian state of Goa from May 4-5. All of these meetings will culminate with the SCO Summit, set to be held in July.&nbsp;</p>

<p>SCO was founded over 20 years ago to promote economic, political, and military cooperation among its member countries. The organisation's members include Russia, India, China, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.</p>

<p>SCO covers over 60 per cent of the Eurasian landmass, 40 per cent of the world population, and 30 per cent of the global GDP.</p>

<p>Jemima Goldsmith, the first wife of former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said her apartment in London was subject to a break-in attempt. The incident occurred in the middle of the night as the perpetrators remain on the run.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Goldsmith took to Twitter to share images of the men who had reportedly stormed into her place and sought help from netizens in their identification. "If you can identify them, then please let me know," she tweeted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to Pakistani media, Goldsmith stated that she called the police at night, immediately after the attempted break-in. The Scotland Yard reached her central London property and a case has been registered.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;journalist and filmmaker said she was not sure if they were the same men who attempted to ransack her place in the night.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, a British-Pakistani taxi driver was accused of stalking Goldsmith and he picked her up from a club and dropped her home. After Goldsmith got a restraining order against&nbsp;him, the driver named Hassan Mahmood was found in its breach&nbsp;last year, having once again texted the 49-year-old.&nbsp;</p>
