<p>Straight out of a slick Hollywood heist movie, two burglars in the US state of Washington managed to break into an Apple store and steal as many as 436 units of iPhones, costing approximately $500,000.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The incident transpired at the Apple Store in the Alderwood Mall, Seattle when the facility was closed. The thieves did their homework and managed to sneak in by cutting a hole in the bathroom wall of a coffee shop next door to enter the backroom of the Apple store. The clever manoeuvre allowed the burglars to bypass Apple's security system.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Apple security team as well as the shop employees had no information about the stolen merchandise until they arrived for work the next day.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lynwood Police confirmed that apart from the iPhones, Apple merchandise worth thousands of dollars was also stolen by the crafty thieves.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Approximately 436 iPhones in total were taken out of the back. As of right now, no [fingerprints] have been found and the subjects entered wearing masks,” Lynwood Police Department Communications Manager Maren McKay was quoted as saying by Fox News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“No arrests have been made at this point, but detectives are currently investigating any information and leads.”</p>

I had no clue we were so close or adjacent to them," Marks was quoted as saying by Seattle's local news channel, King 5 News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our front door was locked. They pried our front door open,” said Marks, adding that the break-in will cost the store around $2,000 in repairs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apple products are known to be expensive with the latest iPhone 14 starting at around $699. The thieves could easily be able to sell them in the black market and reap huge profits.&nbsp;</p>

Alongside her, other accused were tried for&nbsp;murder, attempted murder, unlawful assembly, rioting, rioting armed with deadly weapons, criminal conspiracy, and provoking riots, among others.</p>

<p>In 2012, a special trial court gave its first judgement in the case and Kodnani was&nbsp;convicted along with 31 people. She was given a 28-year prison term with the first 10 years ordered under&nbsp;Section 326 &nbsp;(voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) and the second for 18 years under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Philippines has announced that it will not allow US and its military forces to stockpile weapons that could be used to defend Taiwan on bases it has access to under the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) signed in 2014.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo told the Senate members during a hearing that Washington will not be permitted to conduct activities that were not agreed upon in the 2014 deal, according to South China Morning Post.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Our view is that EDCA is not aimed at any third country outside its meant-for use for the Philippines,” said Manalo, adding that Manila would not authorise US troops to refuel, repair and reload at the said sites.</p>

<p>He added that the Philippines followed “friends to all” foreign policy and vowed that the security agreement, concerning the EDCA, would reflect a similar position.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Philippines' prez assuring China</strong></h2>

<p>Manalo's statements are in sync with the line taken by Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. After Chinese foreign ministry noted that the US was strengthening military deployment in the Philippines, Marcos Jr. came out with a message saying its military bases accessible to the US would not be used in any offensive action&nbsp;</p>

<p>“China’s reaction was not surprising. We will not allow our bases to be used for any offensive actions. This is only aimed at helping the Philippines whenever we need help,” said the prez.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“If no one is attacking us, they need not worry because we will not fight them.”</p>

<h2><strong>US-Philippines military exercise</strong></h2>

<p>Notably, the development comes a little more than a week after Maila and Washington started one of the largest-ever drills near the South China Sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Balikatan (shoulder-to-shoulder) 2023 exercise began on April 11 and will continue till April 28. The exercise has witnessed the participation of over 18,000 troops of which over 12,00 are from the US alone. live-fire exercises at sea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to reports, Washington has so far invested over $82 million to develop five EDCA projects across the existing five locations in Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Palawan, Cebu, and Cagayan de Oro.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US admiral was responding to a question from Indian- American Congressman Ro Khanna who said the relationship between India and China had soured with the latter treating other countries as 'junior' partners.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I would like you to reflect on the importance of the relationship – postcolonialism India and China had a relationship to emerge as the Asian voice. But that relationship now has really soured with a concern that there should not be a hegemon in Asia and that China is treating other countries as junior partners,” said Khanna.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Responding to another question from Congressman Patrick Ryan, the admiral noted that the US had assisted India in the form of supplying cold weather gear and other capabilities that they might need to defend the border areas.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Additionally, we’re expanding our cooperation in the form of production as India tries to work to develop its own industrial base. So, C-130 critical components made in India, helicopter critical frameworks made in India. That is expanding the partnership and moving them towards self-sufficiency and increased partnership with the United States,” added Aquilino.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;Jedidiah P Royal, principal deputy assistant secretary of defence for Indo-Pacific Security during the hearing added that Washington wanted to be India's preferred partner of choice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We want to make sure that the US defence industrial base is in the best position possible to be India’s partner of choice moving forward."</p>

<p>“We’re already delivering offers under the context of the ISAT arrangement. This is a real moment of convergence for the United States and India and we’re looking to take full advantage of it, going forward.”</p>

<p>Lawmakers in the US state of Florida have approved a legislation that permits death penalty for those convicted of sexually abusing minors. The bill, backed by Republican Governor Ron DeSantis was passed by a 34-5 vote in the Senate.&nbsp;Notably, the dissenting votes came from three Democrat and two Republican leaders respectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bill, once turned into law will allow juries to hand out death sentences by votes of at least 8-4, after previously requiring a unanimous decision. If fewer than eight jury members recommend the death penalty, the convict would receive life sentence(s).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bill was passed last week in the Florida House of Representatives 95-14 and now only requires&nbsp;DeSantis' signature. It would apply to those convicted of abusing a child under the age of 12.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“My view is, you have some of these people that will be serial rapists of six, seven-year-old kids.&nbsp;I think the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment when you have situations like that," said DeSantis after passing of the legislation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was a bipartisan bill, co-sponsored by&nbsp;State Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book (D-Davie) and State Sen. Jonathan Martin (R-Fort Myers). They argued that paedophiles were more&nbsp;likely to repeat their crimes and thus deserved the death penalty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Once a predator has a child ensnared, they will harm that child over and over and over again.&nbsp;And then move on to another innocent child," said&nbsp;Book.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is no statute of limitations on this crime (for victims).&nbsp;There is no end. It's always with you."</p>

<p>A man named Pedro Tello Rodriguez Jr. has been arrested in Austin, Texas for shooting two cheerleaders after one of them mistakenly got into the wrong car.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a police statement, the incident took place in the parking lot of HEB - a supermarket chain. The officers arrived at the lot around 12:15 AM on Tuesday after receiving reports of shots being fired.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Information suggests that an altercation occurred in the parking lot of HEB, and multiple shots were fired into a vehicle. Two occupants of the vehicle were struck by gunfire," read the statement released.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"One victim was treated and released on scene. The other sustained serious injuries and was transported to the hospital by helicopter, where they remain in critical condition."</p>

<p>Woodlands Elite, a local cheerleading company informed that four of its cheerleaders were involved in the accident. They have been identified as Payton, Keyona, Heather and Genesis. The cheerleaders had been using the parking lot as a carpool zone.&nbsp;The company has reportedly started a GoFundMe page to bear the medical expenses of the employees.</p>

<p>Cheerleader Heather Roth in an Instagram Live revealed that she alongside her three friends arrived at the lot just after midnight, There, she opened the door to a car she thought was hers but saw Tello Rodriguez. Despite apologising and quickly retreating to her friend's car, the shooter started firing his gun. While a bullet grazed Roth, Payton Washington was shot in the leg and back.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police confirmed that Payton was shot twice and is currently in critical condition, undergoing operations in the intensive care unit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Afterwards, the detectives and crime units worked through the night and managed to nab Tello Rodriguez who was taken into custody and charged with Deadly Conduct, a third-degree felony.</p>

<p>The questions might be simple but the answer certainly is not straightforward - one that can be painted with only black or white hues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though the connotations of world's most populous nation are often perceived as negative, it also brings with itself a set of remarkable opportunities.</p>

<p>India is yet to compile its own population data as it has not conducted a census since 2011. The one supposed to happen in 2021 was delayed due to the Covid pandemic and the government does not seem particularly enthused to get the census campaign back on track.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, according to a <em>Time Magazine</em>&nbsp;report, nearly half the population of India (650 million people) is below the age of 25 - meaning the country won't be hitting its peak until 2065.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Adults aged 65 and older comprise only seven per cent of population compared with 14 per cent in China and 18 per cent in the US. The share of Indians who are 65 and older is likely to remain under 20 per cent until 2063 and will not approach 30 per cent until 2100, under the UN’s medium variant projections.</p>

<p>Considering that the younger population errs on the side of caution and only procreates one or two children per couple, the population will only stabilise after the said year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Until then, India and its mostly young populace could help put the country's economic future into overdrive. The economy can be boosted up to levels hitherto unseen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The division of resources will be a major headache and the problem could be exacerbated by climate change. Then, there is a lack of employment. only five per cent of the workforce currently comes under the formally skilled bracket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Schools, and universities will have to step up majorly so that new avenues of employment are generated for the youth. If India's overwhelming majority of youth sits without a job, it will be a wastage of resources and human capital. Something India can ill-afford to do.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Increasing the education levels ought to suffice as aware people are much more likely to limit the number of offspring they want. Moreover, the total fertility rate is already going down and in the coming years, it may automatically offset the numbers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The National Family Health 5 Survey (2019-21) found that India attained a Total Fertility Rate (TFR) of 2.0 for the first time, less than the replacement level of 2.1, falling from 2.2 in NFHS 4 (2015-16).</p>

<p>Countries like Japan and Italy have been witnessing an alarming drop in population levels which has caused serious concerns. Thus, trying to solve a problem that does not really exist for India would be a huge blunder. <p>Five police officers have been suspended over the killing of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed during custody last Saturday in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The suspended officers include Station House Officer Ashwani Kumar Singh from the Shahganj police station, two Inspector rank officers and two constables.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The five cops have been already questioned by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up by the UP police. The suspension came on the same day as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath conducted a meeting to apprehend Ahmed's wife Shaista Praveen and Guddu Muslim - the other accused in the Umesh Pal murder case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Atiq Ahmed was shot dead on April 16 in Prayagraj while he and his brother Ashraf, both accused in the Umesh Pal murder case were being taken for a medical assessment at the MLN Medical College which comes&nbsp;under the jurisdiction of the Shahganj Police Station. The three assailants, masquerading as reporters managed to spray bullets point blank into the Ahmed brothers while police officers and journalists stood nearby.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to a postmortem report, Atiq was killed after receiving at least nine bullets in his chest and head. The first bullet was fired at his temple which led to instant death. Meanwhile, Ashraf sustained five bullet wounds. One hit him in the face while four entered his body through the back.</p>

<p>The autopsy was conducted by a panel of five doctors at the Motilal Nehru Divisional Hospital and matched the visuals of the attack caught on cameras.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Days after the Indian government&nbsp;directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe the affairs of the Indian arm of the global NGO Oxfam, the probe agency has registered an FIR against the company and its office bearers for being found in violation of the country's foreign funding rule viz., Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The UK-based company has been alleged to have routed foreign contribution money to numerous entities, including for-profit companies&nbsp;in India which is in direct violation of FCRA as it prohibits such transfers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Delhi-based think tank Centre for Policy Research (CPR) is alleged to be one of the prime recipients as employees and associates received foreign money in the form of commissions to avoid the legal net.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Union Home Ministry in its complaint to the central probe agency stated that Oxfam India received as much as Rs 1.5 crore into its Foreign Contribution Utilisation account between 2013 and 2016, instead of the designated bank account. Of the said amount, Rs 12.71 lakh was transferred to CPR in 2019-20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All these findings led the home ministry to recommend a CBI probe against Oxfam India.&nbsp;Oxfam India's FCRA licence was suspended in January 2022, after which the NGO filed a revision petition with the home ministry. Oxfam India's FCRA licence was suspended in January 2022, after which the NGO filed a revision petition with the home ministry. The FCRA licence of CPR was suspended for six months on March 1 for alleged violation of the laws. <p>A former Queensland teacher missing for over three weeks is thought to have been dumped in a bin outside her home. The authorities are now looking to comb through 3,000 tonnes of garbage at the Swanbank Renewable Energy and Waste Management Facility, west of Brisbane, to look for the body of 78-year-old Lesley Trotter.</p>

<p>Multiple police units were collaborating with Australian Defence Force to sift through the garbage which will be exhumed from the ground.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"There is sum of 3,000 tonne of general waste we have to sort through. The waste will be exhumed from the ground, tipped into lanes approximately 30 centimetres deep, and police and ADF personnel will sift through by hand and using rakes...in an attempted to find Ms Trotter's body," Detective Superintendent Andrew Massingham informed the media.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The search operation is expected to take some time as the crew will be able to search through 200 tonnes of garbage per day only.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We've been able to use certain technologies to pinpoint an area that we believe is most likely to yield Ms Trotter's body," added Massingham.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Trotter goes missing&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Trotter was last seen by her family on March 27 as the police initially treated her disappearance as a missing persons case. However, the agencies later received a tip, informing them Trotter's body was dumped in a wheelie bin and taken out by the garbage trucks as part of a weekly collection.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Ongoing investigations can reveal that on the morning of Tuesday, the 28th of March this year, the body of a female we believe was Lesley Trotter was located in a general waste wheelie bin,” the police said in a statement at the time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It was evident she was deceased. Due to the positioning of the body, we can’t rule out foul play. Later that morning that bin was collected by a rubbish truck.”</p>

<p>The police have also questioned the neighbours for any leads but so far have got nothing. However, some reports state that Trotter often sorted through wheelie bins&nbsp;in front of her residence and neighbouring properties in order to remove recycling from general waste bins.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The police have urged anyone who knew of Trotter's movement&nbsp;between March 27 and midday March 28 or her recycling habits to come forward and provide more information.&nbsp;</p>
