Pakistan government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif formed a negotiation committee on Sunday (Dec 22), to initiate formal talks with incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party after they warned of civil disobedience. 
The committee comprises Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, the prime minister’s political aide Rana Sanaullah, Education Minister Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Minister for Privatisation Aleem Khan, Minister for Religious Affairs Chaudhry Salik Hussain, and Senator Irfan Siddiqui among others.
Earlier this month, Imran Khan threatened a civil disobedience movement from Dec 14 if his demands about the release of political prisoners facing trial and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 events and November 26 events, were not met.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan on Saturday said that the government is forming a negotiation committee after intervention by NA speaker Sadiq. 
He further said that the dialogue is "the only way forward" for the government and the opposition. 
The party further welcomed the formation of the committee and called it a "positive step". 
“We consider the committee’s formation a constructive step. Meaningful dialogue based on positive intentions should be held,” the PTI chairman said.

He said that the potential talks should have a defined timeframe, adding that the dialogue must progress positively considering the sensitivity of the situation.
National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has opted to be the host of both sides and facilitate the parleys. 
He said, "The speaker’s office is always open for members."
He further called on the members of both committees for a meeting on Monday morning, saying that the meeting would be held in Parliament House.

President-elect Donald Trump has called for the Panama Canal to be returned to the United States if Panama fails to manage it in a manner he deems acceptable. He also criticised the Central American country for allegedly imposing excessive charges on vessels using the vital waterway.
“Our Navy and Commerce have been treated in a very unfair and injudicious way. The fees being charged by Panama are ridiculous, especially knowing the extraordinary generosity that has been bestowed to Panama by the US. This complete 'rip-off' of our country will immediately stop,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform on Saturday (December 21).

“If the moral and legal principles of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question,” he said.
In a Saturday evening post on Truth Social, Trump expressed concerns about the canal potentially being influenced by China. “It was solely for Panama to manage, not China or anyone else. We would and will NEVER let it fall into the wrong hands!,” he wrote.
Although Trump suggested a potential Chinese role in managing the canal, China does not control or operate it. However, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison Holdings does manage two ports near the canal’s entrances on the Caribbean and Pacific sides.
Trump described the Panama Canal as a “vital national asset” for the US, stressing its importance for both commerce and national security. His remarks marked an unusual instance of a US leader suggesting the possibility of pressuring a sovereign nation to relinquish control of its territory.

India and Vietnam are closer than ever to signing a USD 700 million Brahmos missile system deal as both sides plug in more procedural details. The deal could be signed as early as in a couple of months, and it is learnt that the initial techno-commercial details have already been shared and discussed by the Vietnamese Defence Ministry. Orders are expected from both the Vietnamese Army and Navy. 
BrahMos missile is developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a collaboration between India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya. 
If this deal materialises, then Vietnam will be the second country after the Philippines to purchase the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India. 
Vietnam, it is understood, has been waiting for some time for the draft agreement, which includes the final deal amount, delivery timeline, payment terms, etc., from BrahMos Aerospace (BAPL).

Dr. Sivasubramanyam Nambi Naidu has legally challenged Dr. Jaiteerth R. Joshi's appointment as CEO of BrahMos Aerospace, citing issues of seniority and merit. 
The case, filed at the Central Administrative Tribunal in Hyderabad, has its next hearing scheduled in a few days. While talks over Brahmos have taken place, Vietnam in the past procured Bastion-P (K-300P) coastal defence missile systems from Russia, with the first delivery occurring in 2011.
India and Vietnam have been firming up defence ties. Earlier this week, the India Pavilion at Vietnam International Defence Expo VIDE24 was jointly inaugurated by Vietnam’s Minister of Public Security, Gen Luong Tam Quang, Indian Secretary-Defence Production, Sanjeev Kumar, and Indian Ambassador to Vietnam, Sandeep Arya.
VIDE24 showcases the latest global defence technologies, including those from India. Brahmos Aerospace from India was one of the exhibitors, along with DRDO, HAL, and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders.
India's Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General N. S. Raja Subramani, is also on a visit to the country and attended VIDE 2024. During the official visit to Vietnam, Lieutenant General NS Raja Subramani attended the 80th Anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) at the National Convention Centre, Hanoi.

In 2022, India handed 12 high-speed guard boats to Vietnam, built under India's $100 million Defence Line of Credit. The following year, India announced the gifting of an indigenously built missile corvette, INS Kirpan, to Vietnam. Both countries have a mutual logistics support agreement that allows use of each other's military bases for repair and replenishment. India has also been training Vietnamese personnel. 
A 50-member Indian defence contingent participated in the fourth edition of the VINBAX – 2023 military exercises in Vietnam in December 2023 on UN peacekeeping scenario. Vietnam’s navy ship participated in international maritime exercise MILAN in India in February 2024.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz threatened to "crush Hezbollah's head" if the Lebanon-based militant group violates the ceasefire agreement. 
Katz was on a visit to an Israeli military position in southern Lebanon.
“We defanged the snake, and if Hezbollah does not withdraw beyond the Litani [River] and tries to violate the ceasefire, we will crush its head,” Katz said in the remarks shared by his office. 
He further said that we will not allow Hezbollah operatives to return to the southern villages. 
"We will not allow Hezbollah operatives to return to the southern villages and reestablish the terror infrastructure that will pose a threat to the northern communities,” he added.

<h2>Two Israelis charged for contact with Hezbollah </h2>
Two residents of Jerusalem were indicted for having contact with the Hezbollah group and providing them with information during the war. 
The two men, Abd al-Salam Qawasameh and Taar Asili, who are in their 30s, were in contact via a WhatsApp group with a woman using the name "Diana", who was a Hezbollah operative. 
According to the indictment, even after knowing that she was a member of Hezbollah, the two men continued to maintain contact with her and shared information about Israel. 
Qawasameh shared the handler photos from the coastal town for Caesarea. In Caesarea, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has a private residence.

The pair was also allegedly asked to speak with a senior Hezbollah intelligence officer. Asili bought a new SIM card to contact the officer but refused a request to take photos in the northern border town of Metula. 
The two have been charged with "contact with a foreign agent" and passing information to the enemy. 
Moreover, Qawasameh has also been charged with weapon offences after he took a photo with an assault rifle that belonged to a Palestinian gunman during a visit to the West Bank city of Jenin. 
The prosecution has appealed to the Jerusalem District Court to keep them in custody until the legal proceedings are concluded.
