People received notifications on their cell phones at around 4 pm local time, ordering them to evacuate, even in those areas that were largely unaffected by the fires.
The alert caused anxiety among county residents, who feared their homes were now in danger too.&nbsp;
However, a spokesperson for the fire department later clarified the notification was sent by mistake. &ldquo;It was an error,&rdquo; said spokesperson Kaitlyn Aldana.

Officials from the Los Angeles County Office of Emergency Management said the alert was meant for the Kenneth fire, which affected areas only near West Hills bordering Los Angeles and Ventura counties.
It was not immediately known how many people actually received the evacuation alert. About 9.6 million people live in Los Angeles.
County officials later blamed &lsquo;technical error&rsquo; for the mistake.&nbsp;

&ldquo;I'm still hopeful that we will be able to have a prisoner exchange.&rdquo;

Meanwhile, Lancet in a report released on Friday said that the death toll in Gaza was around 40 per cent higher than the Palestinian Health Ministry's figures &mdash; which are trusted by the UN.

As per the health ministry's estimates, till June 30, 2024, the death toll in Gaza was 37,877.&nbsp;
However, a peer-reviewed study which used data from the ministry, an online study and social media obituaries has estimated that the actual death toll was between 55,298 and 78,525 deaths. The best guess for the death toll estimate is 64,260, which if true, means that the health ministry death toll is underreported by 41 per cent.
The UK-led group of researchers estimated that 59 per cent of these deaths were women, children, and the elderly. The toll was only for deaths from traumatic injuries, so did not include deaths from a lack of health care or food, or the thousands of missing believed to be buried under rubble.

<h2>What the court said</h2>
Donald Trump, convicted in May 2024 on 34 counts of falsifying business records linked to hush money payments to the adult film actress Stormy Daniels, sought to halt the sentencing, claiming it would disrupt presidential duties and harm the office's integrity.&nbsp;

However, the top court in a brief unsigned order stated that the &ldquo;burden that sentencing will impose on the President-Elect's responsibilities is relatively insubstantial&rdquo;.&nbsp;
It also noted that the Republican leader will be allowed to attend the sentencing hearing virtually. The court also pointed out that the judge who presided over the hush money case has already announced plans to impose a sentence of &ldquo;unconditional discharge,&rdquo; which does not carry any jail time, fine, or probation.
However, the US Supreme Court said that Trump can appeal his conviction through the New York State courts.

As per AFP, the four justices in favour of granting Trump's request to halt his sentencing are Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh &mdash; all conservatives.
Meanwhile, the three liberal judges &mdash; Ketanji Brown Jackson, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan &mdash; were joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Amy Coney Barrett, both conservatives, in rejecting his delay bid.
Of these, Barrett, Gorsuch, and Kavanaugh were appointed by Trump himself.

<h2>Presidential immunity</h2>
Trump's legal team argues that presidential immunity should extend to a president-elect. They argue that the sentencing would be a &ldquo;grave injustice&rdquo; and harm &ldquo;the institution of the presidency and the operations of the federal government.&rdquo;
However, on Thursday, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg countered that Trump was a private citizen when he was &ldquo;charged, tried, and convicted&rdquo;.

The Rakhine conflict is one element of the bloody chaos that has engulfed Myanmar since the military ousted Aung San Suu Kyi's civilian government in a 2021 coup, sparking a widespread armed uprising.
AA spokesperson Khaing Thu Kha told AFP a military jet bombed Kyauk Ni Maw, on Ramree island, around 1:20 pm (0650 GMT) on Wednesday, starting a fire that engulfed more than 500 houses.&nbsp;
"According to initial reports, 40 innocent civilians were killed and 20 were wounded," he said.
A member of a local rescue group whose team was helping people in the area told AFP that 41 people were killed and 52 wounded.&nbsp;
"At the moment, we don't even have enough betadine and methylated spirit to treat them as the transportation is hard," the rescue worker said on condition of anonymity to protect their safety.
<h2>Charred ruins</h2>
Photos of the aftermath of the bombing showed dazed residents walking through charred, smoking ruins, the ground littered with corrugated metal, trees stripped bare of leaves, and buildings reduced to a few scraps of walls.
AFP has attempted to contact the junta for comment on the incident, but calls have not been answered.
Ramree Island is home to a planned China-backed deep sea port that, when completed, will serve as a gateway for Beijing to the Indian Ocean, though construction has been stalled by the unrest.
The military is struggling to fight opposition to its rule on multiple fronts around the country, and it has been regularly accused of using air and artillery strikes to hit civilian communities.&nbsp;
As well as the youth-led "People's Defence Forces" that emerged to oppose the coup, the military is also battling numerous long-established and well-armed ethnic minority armed groups, including the AA, which control large areas of territory along the country's borders.

The United Nations last week said that more than 3.5 million people have been displaced by the conflict in Myanmar&mdash;an increase of 1.5 million from last year.
