Ukraine launches investigation into alleged Russian execution of surrendering Ukrainian soldiers

Eleven climbers died in a volcanic eruption in Indonesia on Monday (Dec 4), forcing the authorities to halt their search operation for the remaining missing 12 people.

The eruption of the Marapi volcano in West Sumatra began on Sunday and according to local media reports around 75 climbers were stuck at that time.

The 2,891-metre-high volcano spewed ash as high as 3 km (9,843 ft) into the air, prompting the authorities to raise an alert to the second-highest level and prohibiting residents from going within 3 km (1.86 miles) of the crater.

<h2>Ash blankets villages&nbsp;</h2>

A video circulating on social media showed the climbers were evacuated to a shelter, their faces and hair smeared with volcanic dust and rain.

Falling ash covered several villages and blocked sunlight, National Disaster Management Agency spokesperson Abdul Muhari said.

Authorities distributed masks and urged residents to wear eyeglasses to protect them from volcanic ash, he said.

While the authorities managed to rescue 28 climbers, search operation was initiated to rescue the other climbers.

<h2>Rescue ops halted due to small eruption&nbsp;</h2>

On Monday, the rescue officials found 11 climbers dead, while three more survivors were found alive.

"There are 26 people who have not been evacuated, we have found 14 of them, three were found alive and 11 were found dead," said Abdul Malik, head of Padang Search and Rescue Agency, speaking a day after the eruption, reports AFP news agency.

Jodi Haryawan, spokesperson for the local search and rescue team, said that the search was suspended as a small eruption was taking place on Monday.

Forty-nine climbers were evacuated from the area earlier Monday and many were being treated for burns, he added.

Rudy Rinaldi, head of the West Sumatra Disaster Mitigation Agency, told AFP that some of the rescued hikers were receiving medical treatment.

"Some suffered from burns because it was very hot, and they have been taken to the hospital," he was quoted as saying.

"Those who are injured were the ones who got closer to the crater," he said.

About 1,400 people live on Marapi's slopes in Rubai and Gobah Cumantiang, the nearest villages about 5 to 6 kilometres (3.1 to 3.7 miles) from the peak.

Indonesia is estimated to have 130 active volcanoes.

The Indonesian archipelago sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

As a part of the revised deal, the Sackler family would pay up to $6 billion to a trust to settle claims filed by states, hospitals, people who had become addicted and individual opioid plaintiffs.

A group comprising more than 60,000 people who have filed personal injury claims due to Purdue’s opioid products told the Supreme Court that they support the settlement, including legal immunity for the Sackler family.

However, the settlement is opposed by the DOJ’s bankruptcy watchdog and some individual opioid plaintiffs.

The temporary block on the bankruptcy deal for Purdue came after the top court agreed to hear US President Joe Biden’s administration regarding the legality of the settlement and said it would hold oral arguments in December.&nbsp;

The order was filed by the US Trustee, an office within the DOJ that carries out an administrative function and performs a watchdog role in some instances.&nbsp;

The settlement, which was approved by a lower court, gave the families of Raymond Sackler and Mortimer Sackler protection from all future civil claims which would effectively protect their other assets from opioid-related lawsuits.&nbsp;

The objection filed by the DOJ argues that Purdue’s plans allowed the members of the Sackler family to take advantage of legal protections meant for debtors in “financial distress,” not for billionaires like the Sacklers.

“The court of appeals’ decision is a roadmap for corporations and wealthy individuals to misuse the bankruptcy system to avoid mass-tort liability,” US Trustee told the SCOTUS.

Sackler family members withdrew $11 billion from Purdue over the 11 years before the company filed for bankruptcy protection and later agreed to contribute $6 billion to its opioid settlement, said the Biden administration.

Purdue said it was disappointed that the US Trustee filed a challenge that has “single-handedly” delayed “billions of dollars in value that should be put to use for victim compensation, opioid crisis abatement for communities across the country and overdose rescue medicines.”&nbsp;

The company also said that it was confident about the legality of its “universally supported plan of reorganization” and the SCOTUS will agree with it.&nbsp;

Simply put, Sacklers for giving billions of dollars to Purdue – which as a part of the settlement deal would transform into a nonprofit and dedicate its assets to addressing the harms of opioid addiction across the US – cannot be held accountable for their role in the opioid crisis and don’t even have to declare bankruptcy to for that protection.&nbsp;

In this context, the Supreme Court justices would decide whether members of the Sackler family should be shielded from current and future lawsuits connected with Purdue.&nbsp;

The frustration in and beyond the Greek capital Athens over what they called Sunak's 'insult' to the 'greatness of Greek culture' became a rallying point this week for the return of artefacts stolen during the era of British imperial exploitation in past centuries.

The Parthenon sculptures have been on display at the British museum since 1817 when they were sold to the London-based establishment.&nbsp;

They were removed from the Acropolis in Athens by agents of the 7th Earl of Elgin who had been the British ambassador to Constantinople -- then the capital of the Ottoman Empire -- at the start of the 19th century, when Greece was controlled by the Ottomans.

It's not that negotiations have not been initiated by Athens for the return of a crucial Greek symbol of the ancient city-state of Athens, which is often considered the birthplace of Western civilisation.

But nothing has moved beyond symbolic progress.

Last year, the chair of the British Museum, George Osborne, said that there is a "deal to be done" over sharing the Parthenon Marbles with Greece.&nbsp;

Despite a calming of the current London-Athens row over Parthenon sculptures, Greece has vowed to intensify its campaign for the reunification of these marbles amid Britain's reluctance.
