Now that COP28 UAE (United Nations Climate Change Conference) is in its final leg with the massive global event concluding on December 12, it’s important to note that women champions who are proactive about effectuating changes in the space, participated and tabled some ideas for a better future for the planet. From Ayadi Mishra to Elsie&nbsp;Gabriel, WION got in touch with women leaders who are a part of WCC (Women Climate Collective), a community of women working on climate change and gender issues, and more.&nbsp;

Elsie&nbsp;Gabriel, Founder of the Young Environmentalists Programme Trust, and National Coordinator of Oceans Climate Reality Project, Ayadi Mishra, an architectural designer, and Neha Naikwade who runs zero-waste initiatives and collaborates with the Climate Collective Foundation to aid climate tech startups spoke to WION in an exclusive chat. They spoke about the role of women climate leaders in forums like COP28 and why we need such platforms.&nbsp;

Q: What does COP28 mean for you?&nbsp;

A: Ayadi Mishra: It was a dream to be able to be here in person, and I feel like a stupid kid who is now here in a PR Game for a city that aims to do more harm than good in a place filled with billionaires where countries pledge millions for loss and damage.

Neha Naikwade:&nbsp;I came to COP28 to spread more awareness about the kind of innovation that’s been happening in the Global South and further that climate startup ecosystem support to accelerate the growth of these startups because I believe the people who are suffering on the ground are the best suited to build these solutions. So for me, COP has been that platform to meet people in decision-making chairs and nudge the ecosystem to invite more funding for climate tech startups.

Q: Why do we need COP28?

A: Ayadi Mishra: It was necessary to congregate to operationalise and do what was started at COP27, at COP21... But probably wasn't needed in a country with mega projects on the way and the conference being headed by an oil giant denouncing the science of a fossil fuel-free future.

Neha Naikwade:&nbsp;⁠I think we cannot meet the 1.5-degree goal without the private sector joining the fight. The best way to get the private sector on board is through innovation. It is now more profitable to build a climate-friendly business than a traditional one. That’s why we need to bring more attention to supporting climate tech startups who can save the planet while making it profitable.

Q: Can you comment on how women climate leaders are perceived at such forums?

A: Ayadi Mishra: Women and gender have been given a tight corner tucked away in the venue away from water and a loo in the building - and so has nature! We are given strict guidelines on how to protest, on what symbols we can carry and wear, and in a city that doesn't recognise our identities and genders, we are given a safe space in the women and queers that gather in that corner.

Elsie&nbsp;Gabriel: Women are not just contributing to the field of conservation and climate change; they are strong pillars across all sectors of society. Whether as scientists, creatives, leaders, or mothers, they have also exemplified that none of these roles are mutually exclusive. Women uplifting women is integral for us to understand and educate ourselves at a global scale and put India on the map of women's leadership.

A: Ayadi Mishra: I loved seeing the chair of the gender dialogues be a woman, but didn't like the half-empty room which overflowed with plenaries. I have been meeting incredible women working in restoration, finance, in adaptation- all of whom are open about their struggles and are giving us a hand to help us climb further. I realised how underrepresented we are after looking at the world leaders' picture, in the lead delegation from countries and in the "high level" panels which would at most have 1 woman for tokenism.

Elsie Gabriel: As a WCC champion, I believe we women are working together to develop actionable recommendations and initiatives that integrate gender equality into climate change agendas, fostering a more inclusive, equitable, and resilient future for all through our community and working back home in India can prove this right.

Neha Naikwade:&nbsp;It’s disheartening to see that there are very few women founders and investors in this space.. less than 10 per cent of the climate tech startups in the world are founded by women. Hardly 14/150 speakers at COP are women and even fewer of us are at the negotiation table when 50 per cent&nbsp;of the world's population is women. We need to understand that climate change affects women differently than men. So we need more women at COP to represent the 50 per cent&nbsp;women be it in technology innovation or disaster rescue. Also, we women need to understand how to network and open doors for each other so that we can reach there.

The United Nations Climate Conference 28 is focusing on combating the disproportionate impacts of climate change on women. The decision-makers must not only enact more policies that meet their specific needs but recognise the unique knowledge and expertise women can offer that can be used to support effective climate mitigation and leadership.

Three former Japanese soldiers were declared guilty by a court on Tuesday (Dec 12) for sexually assaulting a female colleague, bringing an end to a years-long saga that dominated headlines in a conservative country where victims hardly speak out against abuse.

Shutaro Shibuya, Akito Sekine, and Yusuke Kimezawa were given two-year suspended jail terms for their “forced indecency” on Rina Gonoi during a military drill in 2021.

The matter came to&nbsp;light last year when 24-year-old Gonoi took to YouTube to share her ordeal after the higher military officials dismissed the case citing a lack of evidence following a probe.

The video gained massive traction on several social media networks, spurring national outcry to punish the soldiers.

However, it was an online petition signed by more than 100,000 people that forced the defence ministry to finally acknowledge the assault, issue an apology,&nbsp;and dismiss five of the men involved.

<h2>Assailants charged with 'forced indecency'&nbsp;</h2>

In March this year, prosecutors reversed an earlier decision and charged three of the assailants with “forced indecency”.

Gonoi, who was present in court for the verdict, said her decision to go public was “desperate rather than brave”.

She said she used to experience harassment daily after joining Japan’s military in 2020.

“When walking down the hallway, someone slaps you on your hip, or holds you from behind,” she told AFP news agency.

“I was kissed on the cheek, and my breasts were grabbed.”

However, it was during a drill in 2021 that the scale of harassment reached another level.

<h2>Victim seeks damages&nbsp;</h2>

She said that three fellow soldiers forced her to the ground, pulled apart her legs and each repeatedly pressed their crotches against her while others watched and laughed.

Gonoi has also filed a damage suit against the three defendants, two other perpetrators and the government, saying she felt their earlier apologies were insincere.

She is seeking 5.5 million yen ($37,800) from the perpetrators and 2 million yen ($13,740) from the government, saying it failed to prevent the assaults, properly investigate or respond appropriately.

In a 300-page report published on Sunday, the think tank showed evidence of a deep divide in Britain.&nbsp;

As per CNN, it shows that the nation's economic stagnation has made tackling poverty harder. Furthermore, the cost-of-living crisis has made hardships experienced by those least well-off harder.

Sophia Worringer, Deputy Policy Director at the Centre for Social Justice, emphasised the stark contrast and said, "We have uncovered a nation of two halves."&nbsp;

"The general public for the most part can get by, and then there is this cohort of people whose lives are marked by family breakdown, physical and mental ill-health; who live in crime-ridden communities and experience multiple barriers to work."

<h2>Echoes of the Victorian Age</h2>

The think tank warns that the UK is "sliding back into the two nations of the Victorian era, marked by a widening gulf between mainstream society and a… poverty-stricken underclass."

Drawing parallels between the current situation and the Victorian Age, it says that the modern Britain is becoming similarly "entrenched" with extreme social inequality marked by poverty, family breakdown, joblessness, addiction, educational failure and more.&nbsp;

<h2>Stagnant wages, pandemic and more</h2>

"For too many, Britain is broken and the gap between the haves and have-nots is in danger of becoming a chasm," says the report's foreword, signed by Mervyn King, a former Bank of England governor, and others.

The report points out that average weekly wages in Britain have remained more or less the same since the 2008 financial crisis.

Furthermore, the pandemic lockdowns worsened key drivers of poverty, and had a "catastrophic effect on the nation’s social fabric."

During lockdowns, domestic abuse helpline calls surged by 700 per cent, and mental health issues escalated, especially among young people.

"One in 5 young people were left facing mental health challenges after the pandemic."

It also found that severe school absence increased by 134 per cent, while welfare payments rose significantly to 1.2 million people availing it.&nbsp;

The report warns that if the current trend continues, by 2030, a quarter of children between the ages of five and 15 will suffer from a mental health disorder.

Authors of the report, as per CNN, are working on "an ambitious suite of policy recommendations" which will be released next spring to help tackle "the root causes of poverty". Without a strategy to do so, "our future is looking very poor," warned Worringer.

The deliberate attempt at rebranding exercise reflects China’s attempts to establish and destabilise the Tibetan identity, which has long been associated with struggle, freedom, culture, and of course, the Dalai Lama.

By carefully changing names, experts argue, China seeks to foster what Xi has called a “sense of community for the Chinese nation”, intended to strengthen national identity in ethnic minority regions.

“The Chinese government’s change in Tibet’s English name does not reflect a stance on ethnicity but on sovereignty,” Barry Sautman, an emeritus professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, told SCMP.

“It is to vindicate the sovereign right to use a term derived from China’s official language for a part of China’s territory,” he was quoted as saying.

<h2>Tibetans react</h2>

The move to rename Tibet has drawn condemnation from the president of the Tibetan government-in-exile, accusing China of exterminating the Tibetan identity.

A 30-year-old man was arrested in New Hampshire for sending threatening messages to Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy ahead of a scheduled campaign event.

The perpetrator, who was arrested on Saturday (Dec 9), was identified as Tyler Anderson. He was charged with sending a threat using interstate commerce.

He was produced before the court on Monday (Dec 11) where he remained silent other than telling the judge he understood the proceedings. A detention hearing was scheduled for Thursday.

<h2>Ramaswamy expresses gratitude for swift action&nbsp;</h2>

A spokesperson for Ramaswamy said that the texts were directed at his campaign, in which Tyler had threatened to assassinate the Republican leader ahead of his event.

“We are grateful to law enforcement for their swiftness and professionalism in handling this matter and pray for the safety of all Americans,” Stefan Mychajliw, deputy communications director, said in a statement.

Ramaswamy also expressed his gratitude to law enforcement agencies for their swift action.

“I'm grateful for the team that's around us and they've been doing a great job in making sure that I'm kept safe," he said.

According to court documents, the man received a text message from the candidate’s campaign on Friday notifying him of Monday’s breakfast event in Portsmouth.

In response, the campaign staff received two text messages, one threatening to shoot Ramaswamy in the head, and the other threatening to kill everyone at the event and desecrate their corpses.

The FBI said they zeroed in on the man&nbsp;by tracing his cellphone number, following which the agents landed at the man’s home on Saturday and arrested him.

<h2>Accused can be sent to prison for up to 5 years&nbsp;</h2>

The texts were found in a deleted folder, the FBI affidavit said.

According to the affidavit, the man, during the interrogation, told the FBI that he had sent similar texts to “multiple other campaigns”.

The document also includes a screenshot of texts threatening a mass shooting in response to an invitation to see a candidate “who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is.”
