Alex, who is now 17 years old, went missing at the age of 11, in 2017 during a holiday in Spain and was recently found by a delivery driver along a mountainous area of southern France. The British police had launched a case after Alex and his family members did not return from the Spanish city of Marbella after two weeks.&nbsp;

His mother, whose current whereabouts are unknown, does not have parental guardianship.&nbsp;

“It gives me great pleasure to say Alex has now made his safe return back to the UK after six years,” said Matt Boyle, assistant chief of the Greater Manchester police (GMP), on Saturday night. Alex hails from Oldham, Greater Manchester and has been returned to his maternal grandmother Susan Caruana, whom the British justice system had entrusted with his custody before his alleged abduction.

According to reports, Alex was allegedly abducted by his mother Melanie Batty and grandfather David Batty. Due to domestic issues, both adults were banned from being with the youngster at the time.&nbsp;

Alex’s mother, Melanie is yet to be found but could be in Finland, according to Toulouse assistant prosecutor Antoine Leroy. Alex reportedly told the police that his grandfather, David may have died six months ago but it is unclear where he might have been buried.

Susan Caruana, who was Alex’s grandmother and official guardian, believed that her ex-partner and her daughter had run away with Alex and had settled into “an alternative lifestyle” somewhere.&nbsp;

She believed, at the time of Alex’s disappearance, that Melanie and David had taken him abroad and “got involved with a cult”.

“I can’t wait to see him when we’re reunited,” said Caruana. “The main thing is that he’s safe, after what would be an overwhelming experience for anyone, not least a child.”&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in France?</h2>

The 17-year-old was found by a delivery driver after he had walked for four days and nights, said a deputy prosecutor. A doctor who examined him said that he is in good health and does not appear to have been abused in the years since his abduction, reported AFP.&nbsp;

According to French media reports, Alex told investigators he had not suffered any physical violence during the past six years.&nbsp;

Alex had been in France for two years before he was found, he told the investigators, and had lived a “nomadic” life in a “spiritual community” but would not stay in the same place for more than several months at a time.&nbsp;

According to the French prosecutor, the teenager had decided to escape when his mother announced she was going to Finland. Alex told French investigators they had spent time in Morocco before moving to the French Pyrenees, near the border with Spain.&nbsp;

Alex also reportedly told investigators that he had spent time in a spiritual community centre focused on “work on the ego, meditation and reincarnation” when his mother said she was moving to Finland and he decided to leave.&nbsp;

Alex had been walking along the road by night to avoid detection and foraging food from gardens and fields along the way, when a student working as a delivery driver, Fabien Accidini, picked Alex up between two villages in the pouring rain.&nbsp;

“He clearly needed help,” Fabien told AFP, and since Alex did not speak French very well, he spoke to him in English. Alex who was also suspicious of Fabien initially gave him a fake name but as the boy helped him with his deliveries he opened up.&nbsp;

“During the first few minutes, he seemed a little shy…When I asked him his name, he pretended his name was Zach, and then we continued chatting. We talked for over three hours! Very quickly, he gave me his real identity – Alex Batty – before telling me his story,” said Fabien.&nbsp;

He told the news agency that he was also shocked to learn that Alex had been abducted, “When he told me he’d been abducted, I made him say it again – it was crazy!”

Fabien lent his mobile phone so the 17-year-old could contact his grandmother in England via Facebook to tell her he wanted to come home. They later went to the police.&nbsp;

Alex, who will turn 18 on February 13 is set to face adulthood with no qualifications or recent schooling and his immediate future will involve attempting to restart his life in Greater Manchester.

The team was backed by Dr Peter Doran of the Queen's University Belfast School of Law.

Executive director Mari Margil embraced the recommendation by the committee.

"We congratulate chairperson Brian Leddin and the Joint Committee for its work and taking this important step forward toward enshrining the rights of nature within Ireland's constitution," BBC quoted her as saying.

Three Israeli hostages accidently killed by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops were shirtless and waving a white flag when they&nbsp;were mistaken for being militants, according to an IDF official. Meanwhile, thousands of Israelis took to the streets in the city of Tel Aviv urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to secure the release of hostages held by the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

<h2>Israeli hostages mistakenly killed by troops</h2>

Three Israeli hostages – Yotam Haim (28), Samer Talalka (22), and Alon Shamriz (26) – were killed in Gaza’s Shejaiya on Friday (Dec 15) around 10:00 am (local time), said an Israeli military official. The case, according to the IDF, was “against our rules of engagement” and had prompted an investigation at the “highest level”.&nbsp;

The initial probe revealed that a soldier stationed at a building identified three suspicious figures emerging from another building around several dozen metres away, reported Times of Israel citing a senior IDF official.&nbsp;

All three were shirtless and one of them was carrying a stick with a white cloth. According to the initial probe, the soldier thought it was an attempt by Hamas to lure them into a trap and immediately opened fire and shouted “terrorists!”.&nbsp;

The soldier, according to the probe, killed two men, while the third one returned to the building he emerged from. Subsequently, the commander of the battalion went outside and asked the troops to stop firing.&nbsp;

The third hostage was heard shouting “Help” in Hebrew and came out of the building and another soldier opened fire at him and fatally shot him, it was found after the initial probe.&nbsp;

Wichian Temthong, a freed Thai hostage, told BBC, that he was “very shocked” and “saddened” to learn about the deaths of the three men with whom he had spent nearly 50 days in captivity.

“We couldn’t speak each other’s languages, so we mostly did hand signals and drawing to communicate,” the Thai worker told BBC. Four of them would shake hands and make a hand gesture to say “keep on fighting” every day to boost their moral support, said Wichian.&nbsp;

<h2>New negotiations are underway?</h2>

Netanyahu made an&nbsp;appearance on TV&nbsp;to confirm on Saturday (Dec 16) that new negotiations were underway for release of&nbsp;hostages held by Hamas. A report by Reuters citing a source said that the chief of Israel’s Mossad spy agency, David Barnea, met Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Europe late on Friday.&nbsp;

The meeting indicates a possible new Gaza truce and a prisoner and hostage deal. Meanwhile, in Israel, in a speech followed by the news of the three&nbsp;hostages being mistakenly killed, the Israeli PM said that their deaths “broke the hearts of the nation” but vowed to “continue until victory”.&nbsp;

Netanyahu, in a televised speech, spoke about how the Israeli offensive in Gaza has helped clinch a partial hostage-release deal in November and vowed to maintain intense military pressure on Hamas.&nbsp;

“The instruction I am giving the negotiating team is predicated on this pressure, without which we have nothing,” said the Israeli PM.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Hamas, in a statement said that the group “affirms its position not to open any negotiations to exchange prisoners unless the aggression against our people stops once and for all.” It added, “The movement communicated this position to all mediators.”

<h2>Netanyahu government under pressure</h2>

Israelis continue to put pressure on the Netanyahu government to secure the release of the more than 100 hostages still in Gaza. Hundreds took to the streets in Tel Aviv after the news of the three hostages being mistakenly killed by IDF.

The demonstrators marched toward the IDF’s headquarters chanting, “Their time is running out! Bring them home now!”, quoted Times of Israel. “There is no victory until every last hostage is released!”&nbsp;

Tagit Tzin, the aunt of Dafna (15) and Ela Elyakim (9) who were freed from Gaza last month, told The Independent that while the families understood the military mistakenly killed the three hostages, she believes the error highlights how the only way to retrieve the hostages safely was through a truce deal, not military action.

“Only a ceasefire deal will bring the hostages out alive and not put our soldiers in danger like this,” said Tzin.&nbsp;

Wichian Temthong, a freed Thai hostage, told BBC, that he was “very shocked” and “saddened” to learn about the deaths of the three men with whom he had spent nearly 50 days in captivity. “We couldn’t speak each other’s languages, so we mostly did hand signals and drawing to communicate,” the Thai worker told BBC. Four of them would shake hands and make a hand gesture to say “keep on fighting” every day to boost their moral support, said Wichian. New negotiations are underway? HMS Diamond, a Type 45 destroyer, is carrying out operations to make sure freedom of navigation, reassure merchant vessels and ensure the safe flow of trade, said the defence ministry.

The deployment of the naval vessel took place&nbsp;following the seizure of an Israeli-linked cargo vessel by Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea on Nov 19 amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

On the other hand,&nbsp;the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that&nbsp;an American destroyer on Saturday shot down more than a dozen drones in the Red Sea launched from Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

"The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS CARNEY... operating in the Red Sea, successfully engaged 14 unmanned aerial systems launched as a drone wave from Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen," CENTCOM said on X.

The Yemeni Houthis have launched a series of drone and projectile strikes targetting Israel since Hamas launched unprecedented attacks on Oct 7, claiming the lives of around 1,140 people, mostly civilians, as per Israeli figures.

Nearly 240 people were taken hostages in the attacks. &nbsp;

Israel in retaliation&nbsp;launched a counter-offensive that, as per the Hamas-run territory's health ministry has killed at least 18,800 people, mostly women and children.

On Friday, two of the world's largest shipping firms, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, said that they were suspending passage through a Red Sea strait vital for global commerce, after the incidents.

UK defence minister Grant Shapps&nbsp;warned Saturday that "the recent spate of illegal attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security in the Red Sea."

"The UK remains committed to repelling these attacks to protect the free flow of global trade," he added.

Flavio Di Giacomo, an IOM spokesperson took to X and said more than 2,250 people died this year on the central Mediterranean migrant route, a “dramatic figure which demonstrates that unfortunately not enough is being done to save lives at sea”.&nbsp;

Since the beginning of this year, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of Europe-bound central Mediterranean migrant crossings from North Africa which is said to be the world’s deadliest, according to the United Nations.&nbsp;

The members noted that the allegations levelled against India in the indictment were “deeply concerning.”

The five members said that the impact of the US-India ties was such that it can help make the lives of people of both nations better. “But we are concerned that the actions outlined in the indictment could, if not appropriately addressed, cause significant damage to this very consequential partnership,” they added.

The allegations made in the indictment are deeply concerning,” the statement said. “It is critical that India fully investigate, hold those responsible, including Indian government officials, accountable, and provide assurances that this will not happen again,” it added. “With great sadness and sorrow, we – the Kuwaiti people, the Arab and Islamic nations, and the friendly peoples of the world – mourn the late His Highness the Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, who passed away to his Lord today,” said a statement aired on Kuwaiti state television.

State television made the announcement after halting its regular programming and switched to a broadcast of the Koranic recital.

Kuwait announced 40 days of mourning and a three-day closure of official departments starting from Sunday to Tuesday.&nbsp;

Sheikh Nawaf was admitted to the hospital in the month of November "due to an emergency health problem", according to the official KUNA news agency, which did not share many details about his illness. He was later declared in stable condition.

His health had&nbsp;been a concern during his term given his age.

Sheikh Nawaf was designated crown prince in 2006 by his half-brother Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah and took over as emir when Sheikh Sabah passed away in Sep 2020 at the age of 91.

He had to navigate the economy through a crisis which was caused by a drop in oil prices in the year 2020.

The crown prince, Sheikh Mishal al-Ahmad al-Sabah, another half-brother, is 83-year-old and much attention will be now focused on whether the family brings in a younger generation ruler.

Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the fifth son of Kuwait's late ruler from 1921 to 1950 Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

He began his political career at the age of 25 as governor of Hawalli province, where he remained until 1978 when he started a decade as interior minister.&nbsp;

<h2>India declares one-day state mourning</h2>

India has declared a one-day state of mourning throughout the nation on Sunday as a mark of respect to Sheikh Nawaf.

"His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait passed away on December 16, 2023. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day's state mourning (/topic/state-mourning) on December 17, 2023, throughout India," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in an official release.

"The National Flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day," the MHA release added.

Kuwait's crown prince, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was named the country's new emir in an emergency cabinet meeting after Sheikh Nawaf's passing, state television reported.

"Kuwait's cabinet names crown prince, his highness Sheikh Meshal... emir of the state of Kuwait," the broadcaster said.
