<p>The Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Monday (Dec 18) accused Israel of intentionally starving civilians in the Gaza Strip as a part of its ongoing offensive against Hamas in the besieged Palestinian territory. In a <strong><a href="https://www.hrw.org/news/2023/12/18/israel-starvation-used-weapon-war-gaza">report, the HRW called starvation</a></strong> a war crime, and said, "Israeli forces are deliberately blocking the delivery of water, food, and fuel, while willfully impeding humanitarian assistance, apparently razing agricultural areas, and depriving the civilian population of objects indispensable to their survival."</p>

<p>Omar Shakir, HRW's Israel and Palestine director, said that for more than two months, Israel had been depriving Gaza's population of food and water. "World leaders should be speaking out against this abhorrent war crime, which has devastating effects on Gaza’s population," Shakir added.</p>

<h2><strong>'A constant search for things needed to survive'</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking to the HRW, 11 displaced Palestinians in Gaza described their profound hardships in securing necessities. "We had no food, no electricity, no internet, nothing at all. We don’t know how we survived,” one man who left northern Gaza told the New York-based rights group.</p>

<p>"In addition, Israel’s continuing blockade of Gaza, as well as its more than 16-year closure, amounts to collective punishment of the civilian population, a war crime. As the occupying power in Gaza under the Fourth Geneva Convention, Israel has the duty to ensure that the civilian population gets food and medical supplies," the HRW further said in its report.</p>

<h2><strong>Israel hits back at HRW, calls it 'antisemitic organisation'</strong></h2>

<p>The Israeli government on Monday slammed the HRW's report, calling the rights group an "antisemitic and anti-Israeli organisation."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Human Rights Watch ... did not condemn the attack on Israeli citizens and the massacre of October 7 and has no moral basis to talk about what's going on in Gaza if they turn a blind eye to the suffering and the human rights of Israelis," foreign ministry spokesman Lior Haiat told the news agency AFP.</p>

They recognised her from her distinctive leggings and said Haiman first hid under a stage with friends and then took cover under a bush, reported Times of Israel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two witnesses also reportedly told her family that she later was found by a pair of Hamas fighters armed with knives, who hauled the 27-year-old out and placed her on a motorbike.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Her family and Alon later received a video posted by Hamas on Telegram, showing Haiman looking bloody and beaten, surrounded by four men, according to Times of Israel. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“The video came as a kind of relief,” Alon told the Guardian, in an interview last month after the video emerged. “The other option – that she was dead – was far worse. Knowing that she’s now a hostage in Gaza isn’t easy – it’s something you wouldn’t wish on your worst enemy – but it’s better than the alternative.”</p>

<p>The news of her reported death came a day after the Israeli military said that they found the bodies of two soldiers and one civilian hostage who were taken captive by Hamas. The civilian was later identified as Elia Toledano, a 28-year-old French-Israeli citizen.</p>

<p>It is believed that around 128 people are still in Hamas captivity, but not all of them are thought to be alive. Some 105 Israeli hostages were released from Gaza during the week-long truce last month. <p>The woman engaged in a series of crimes, including robbery, extortion, and the brutal murder of seven individuals, between 1996 and 1999.</p>

<p>According to reports, while Lao would pick targets at entertainment venues, her boyfriend Fa Ziying used to kill them.</p>

<p>The woman spent 20 years on the run, evading authorities using aliases. Finally, she was arrested in the Fujian province in 2019 and charged with the crimes of intentional homicide, robbery and kidnapping in August 2020.</p>

<p>Last year, Lao was given the death penalty by the Intermediate People's Court of Nanchang, Jiangxi, a decision she contested in the Jiangxi Provincial High People's Court.</p>

<p>Lao had all her political rights stripped and properties confiscated as a result of the verdict.</p>
