The Palace of Aigai is situated near Greece’s northern port city of Thessaloniki, which was later plundered and destroyed by the Romans. The site was discovered through excavations beginning in the 19th century. Its restoration and renovation cost more than $22 million, with help from the European Union (EU).&nbsp;

The restoration process for the ancient site has been going on for the last 16 years and its restored sections include massive colonnades. The site will reopen to the general public on Sunday.&nbsp;

The palace was built by Philip II, Alexander the Great's father, who ruled over the powerful kingdom of Macedonia. It was the largest building built in the classical Greek style of architecture- an area covering 15,000 sq m (160,000 sq ft)&nbsp;and featuring large banquet halls, places of worship and courtyards.

Alexander was crowned the King of&nbsp;Macedonia&nbsp;in 336 BC after the assassination of his father, Philip II. He later went on to create an empire stretching into Asia and the Middle East.&nbsp;

The place Aigai is known as Vergina in the present day and the Greek architectural site was once&nbsp;the largest buildings of ancient Greece.&nbsp;

Archaeological evidence proves that the site was continuously inhabited starting from the Early Bronze Age (3rd Millenium BC), while in the Early Iron Age (11th to 8th centuries BC) it became an important, rich and densely populated centre.

Weeks ago, Al-Masry, together with her husband Ammar Yasser, and their three children, fled from the severe Israeli bombing on the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza. The family was staying inside the Rufaida school in Deir al-Balah. "About 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza – 5,500 of whom are expected to deliver in the next month – are unable to obtain basic health and nutrition services. The new year started on a sombre&nbsp;note for Japan&nbsp;as at approximately 4:10 pm on January 1, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the Noto Peninsula, located on the west coast of the quake-prone country.

What makes this earthquake particularly unexpected is its occurrence on the west coast of the country, as opposed to the east, which has experienced the most earthquakes in the history of Japan.

"In the last 125 years, the Ishikawa Prefecture has seen about 30 earthquakes in the region, and they have not been major ones. In its entire documented history, this is the largest earthquake to have occurred on the west coast," Dr Kusala Rajendran, a national award-winning seismologist and a retired earth sciences professor from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, told WION.

The tremors of this earthquake reverberated as far as Tokyo, situated 300 km (185 miles) away.

But what makes Japan so prone to earthquakes?

<h2>The tectonic plate mechanism</h2>

Earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates collide, and one slides beneath the other, resulting in the sudden release of energy.

"Japan is located on four major tectonic plates - the Pacific plate, North American plate, Philippine plate, and the Eurasian plate," Dr Rajendran said.

The existence of these four plates, grinding against each other, makes the region very complex.

However, the Noto earthquake serves as a testament to the cultivation of resilience. The impact could have been far more devastating if not for Japan's dedicated focus on mitigating disaster risks.

According to Dr Rajendran, the death toll has exceeded 100 solely because the earthquake occurred on the west coast. If it had happened on the east coast, where Tokyo is situated, measures could have been taken more effectively to handle or reduce the toll.&nbsp;

But in general, Japan heavily invests in preventive measures, using advanced early-warning systems that transmit alerts about significant earthquakes to mobile phones and TVs, occasionally interrupting live broadcasts.

In February 2022, Turkey faced a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that tragically claimed over 59,000 lives. The strikingly lower casualty count in Japan, despite experiencing a quake of comparable magnitude, highlights the effectiveness of Japan's progressive resilience-building efforts over time, distinguishing it from other nations.

By the afternoon of January 2, NHK's broadcasts displayed images of emergency responders assessing damage and residents receiving aid from relief workers.

Concurrently, amidst ongoing recovery efforts, many New Year traditions persisted. On Japanese Twitter (now X), the leading trending topic early on January 2 was the Hakone Ekiden, an annual long-distance race.

JR East, responsible for operating trains in the quake-affected regions, had its bullet-train lines operational again by 3 pm on January 2—less than 24 hours after the earthquake struck.

If there is a large earthquake in the Himalayan range, which Dr Rajendran says is overdue, the Delhi NCR region is going to face a big problem owing to the fact that most of its high-rise buildings and metro pillars stand on soft alluvial soil, which is a pile-up of sediments transported by river.

"The Japan earthquake is a reminder for everyone to make earthquake education&nbsp;and preparedness a priority," Dr Rajendran reminds with caution.

The new year started on a sombre note for Japan as at approximately 4:10 pm on January 1, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake shook the Noto Peninsula, located on the west coast of the quake-prone country. What makes this earthquake particularly unexpected is its occurrence on the west coast of the country, as opposed to the east, which has experienced the most earthquakes in the history of Japan. In its entire documented history, this is the largest earthquake to have occurred on the west coast," Dr Kusala Rajendran, a national award-winning seismologist and a retired earth sciences professor from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, told WION. The tremors of this earthquake reverberated as far as Tokyo, situated 300 km (185 miles) away. But what makes Japan so prone to earthquakes? The tectonic plate mechanism Earthquakes occur when two tectonic plates collide, and one slides beneath the other, resulting in the sudden release of energy. "Japan is located on four major tectonic plates - the Pacific plate, North American plate, Philippine plate, and the Eurasian plate," Dr Rajendran said. The existence of these four plates, grinding against each other, makes the region very complex. However, the Noto earthquake serves as a testament to the cultivation of resilience. The impact could have been far more devastating if not for Japan's dedicated focus on mitigating disaster risks. According to Dr Rajendran, the death toll has exceeded 100 solely because the earthquake occurred on the west coast. If it had happened on the east coast, where Tokyo is situated, measures could have been taken more effectively to handle or reduce the toll. But in general, Japan heavily invests in preventive measures, using advanced early-warning systems that transmit alerts about significant earthquakes to mobile phones and TVs, occasionally interrupting live broadcasts. In February 2022, Turkey faced a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake that tragically claimed over 59,000 lives. The strikingly lower casualty count in Japan, despite experiencing a quake of comparable magnitude, highlights the effectiveness of Japan's progressive resilience-building efforts over time, distinguishing it from other nations. × Local governments and businesses engage in thorough disaster planning and training. In response to the disaster, Ishikawa Prefecture, covering the Noto Peninsula, swiftly established a Disaster Countermeasures Headquarters. By the afternoon of January 2, NHK's broadcasts displayed images of emergency responders assessing damage and residents receiving aid from relief workers. Concurrently, amidst ongoing recovery efforts, many New Year traditions persisted. On Japanese Twitter (now X), the leading trending topic early on January 2 was the Hakone Ekiden, an annual long-distance race. "The Japan earthquake is a reminder for everyone to make earthquake education and preparedness a priority," Dr Rajendran reminds with caution.

Crews were working Thursday night to clear the tracks and hoping to get service resumed by Friday. Firefighters helped remove passengers from the in-service train as well as a few hundred more people from another train that was not involved but had to stop in the tunnel because of the collision. A struggling subway system The NYC subway system has been struggling in recent years with power outages, signal problems and other breakdowns. The late financier Jeffrey Epstein invoked his constitutional right against incriminating himself about 600 times in testimony for a lawsuit brought by Virginia Giuffre, who accused him of sexual abuse.

Epstein’s refusal to answer questions in Giuffre’s lawsuit against his longtime associate Ghislaine Maxwell was disclosed in a filing on Friday in Manhattan federal court, as part of a trove of documents being unsealed this month from the civil defamation case, which settled in 2017.

The Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution gives people the right not to incriminate themselves.

In the September 2016 filing, Giuffre’s lawyers said Epstein routinely answered “Fifth” in a deposition that month to about 500 substantive questions they posed, and 100 substantive questions that Maxwell’s lawyers posed.

Giuffre’s lawyers said Epstein’s refusal to answer extended to questions that posed no real risk of incriminating him, including whether he knew Maxwell, had in 2008 pleaded guilty in open court to a prostitution charge and was healthy enough to testify.

The questions also included at least three about Epstein’s relationship with former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

Lawyers for Epstein said in a subsequent filing, also released on Friday, that their client would have invoked the Fifth Amendment if called upon to testify at trial.

They cited among other reasons the “burdens” he would face, and the expected “media circus generated by Mr. Epstein’s personal appearance.”

Epstein killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in August 2019 at age 66 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Several other people accused of aiding in his sexual abuses also invoked their rights against self-incrimination in various litigation related to him, Friday’s unsealed filings show.

More than 180 documents including depositions, legal briefs and email chains from Giuffre’s lawsuit have been released since Wednesday, under an order last month from U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan, who oversaw the case.

The documents name many of Epstein’s victims, who were paid to give him and others massages in exchange for money.

Others named included people who worked with the financier, and a handful of celebrities and politicians linked to him.

In addition to Clinton, prominent people named in the documents include actor Kevin Spacey, magician David Copperfield and business executive Leslie Wexner. None was accused in the documents of wrongdoing.

Several documents discussed the alleged activities of Britain’s Prince Andrew, who Giuffre sued and accused of abusing her more than two decades ago when she was 17.

Andrew has denied Giuffre’s accusations, but settled her case for a reported 12 million pounds ($15 million) in 2022.

Maxwell is appealing her December 2021 conviction and 20-year prison sentence for aiding in Epstein’s sexual abuses. A federal appeals court in Manhattan may review her case as soon as March.

Addressing a press conference, Dallas County Sheriff Adam Infante said the shooting at the school took place on Thursday morning and resulted in multiple victims. The suspect was identified as Dylan Butler, a 17-year-old student at Perry High School. He was found dead with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound by responding officers. "The shooter has been identified as 17-year-old Dylan Butler, a student at Perry High School. Butler was armed with a pump action shotgun and a small calibre handgun. Butler also made a number of social media posts in and around the time of the shooting. Law enforcement is working to secure those pieces of evidence. All evidence thus far suggests that Butler acted alone," Mitch Mortvedt, assistant director of Iowa division of criminal investigation, said. "There are six victims, one of them who is deceased. That individual was a sixth-grade student at Perry Middle School. The other five are being treated at area hospitals. Four of the surviving students, four of the surviving victims are students, and the fifth is a school administrator. The law enforcement response was swift and immediate.
