Navalny was attacked by unknown assailants just outside his office in 2017. He was sprayed with a dye that can potentially damage a person's eye. In another similar attack, Navalny reportedly lost most of the sight of his right eye.

To deter him from contesting elections, Russian bureaucracy and state machinery slapped jail sentences on him and Russia's election body disbarred him from contesting.

<h2>Arrests and hospitalisation around Duma elections (2019)</h2>

In spite of previous attack, Navalny stuck to his political line and chose to support independent candidates. He was arrested multiple times and then was hospitalised because of severe damage to eye and skin. It was claimed that he was suffering from 'allergy' but this was disputed.

This was the most prominent attack on Navalny which nearly killed him. A Soviet-era nerve agent Novichok was used against him and after his health deteriorated during a domestic flight in Russia, he was hospitalised. He was then taken to Germany for treatment where he recovered.

It was possible for Navalny to stay in Germany and be an 'in-exile' opposition leader. But he chose to return and was promptly arrested, convicted and sent to prison, including the one in the dreaded Siberian region.

Navalny survived a lot of situations which normally would make an ordinary human being quit their rebellion and take a safe route. Somehow, Navalny did not do this, and kept on fighting astronomical odds stacked against him. This time however, it is being feared that Putin might finally have got his way.

<h2>Beautiful confluence of religions&nbsp;</h2>

The temple is constructed on 27 acres of land, with 13.5 acres dedicated to the temple complex area and the other 13.5 acres allotted for parking which can accommodate 14,000 cars and 50 buses.

The 13.5 acres of land was gifted by Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ‘a Muslim king,’ for the construction of a Hindu temple, said a BAPS spokesperson.

What makes this temple special is the beautiful confluence of religions that led to its construction.

The lead architect of the BAPS Hindu Temple is a “Catholic Christian, the project manager a Sikh, the foundational designer a Buddhist, the construction company a Parsi group, and the director comes from the Jain tradition”, as per BAPS spokesperson.

<h2>Significance&nbsp;</h2>

As per BAPS, Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the 10th spiritual guru and head of the sect, had envisioned a Hindu temple far away in the desert lands of Abu Dhabi in April 1997.

His vision was to bring countries, communities and cultures together, which aligned with the UAE’s initiative to promote cultural diversity and tolerance.

During the foundation stone laying ceremony in April 2019, Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, Chairman of the Department of Community Development, said, "Laying the foundation stone of the temple is reflective of the landscape of tolerance and pluralism in the UAE."

The temple has carvings of symbolic animals native to the UAE like camels, oryxes, and falcons. There are also 14 depictions of parables from Arabian, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and other civilisations.

In May 2023, during a visit by ambassadors from 30 countries, Akio Isomata, Ambassador from Japan said, "I see a philosophy of tolerance in the carvings".

Last month, when diplomats from 42 countries visited the temple, Deputy Ambassador of the UK Jonathan Knight stated, "So many different faiths coming together to build something that will last for generations".

<h2>Key features of the temple</h2>

Here are some key architectural features of the temple:

-The Abu Dhabi BAPS temple is a traditional stone Hindu temple with seven shikhars (spires).&nbsp;

-It is built in the traditional Nagara style and the temple’s front panel depicts universal values, stories of harmony from different cultures, Hindu spiritual leaders and avatars.

-The height of the temple is 108 feet with a length of 262 ft and width of 180 ft. While the external facade uses pink sandstone from Rajasthan, the interior uses Italian marble.&nbsp;

-The temple has two central domes, the Dome of Harmony and the Dome of Peace, emphasising human coexistence through the carvings of earth, water, fire, air and plants.

-A Wall of Harmony, one of the largest 3D-printed walls in the UAE, features a video showcasing key milestones of the temple’s construction.&nbsp;

-The word ‘harmony’ has been written in 30 different ancient and modern languages.

-The seven shikhars (spires) are representative of the seven Emirates of the UAE.

- The temple was judged the Best Mechanical Project of the Year 2019 at the MEP Middle East Awards, and the Best Interior Design Concept of the Year 2020.

The consecration of the temple will take place on February 14 through a Vedic ceremony held by Mahant Swami Maharaj. The temple will open to the public on February 18.&nbsp;

According to the prison service, the 47-year-old former lawyer fell unconscious and succumbed to an undisclosed cause on Friday (Feb 16) while taking a walk at the remote penal facility.&nbsp;

As per OVD-Info, which reports on freedom of assembly in Russia, the most number of arrests occurred in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the two cities where Navalny has historically had significant support. In St. Petersburg, more than 200 people were in custody as of Saturday at 2:00 pm GMT.

However, there was no mention of such events on Russian state news agencies, which reportedly are under full Kremlin control.

Stories were also not covered about hundreds of people across Russia who have continued to defy authorities to lay flowers at impromptu Navalny memorials.

Leonid Volkov, Navalny's chief of staff during the 2018 presidential elections and one of his closest aides, wrote on X, "Alexei Navalny wanted one very simple thing: for his beloved Russia to be just a normal country."

"And for this Vladimir Putin killed him. Poisoned, imprisoned, tortured and killed him."

“Preparations for one of the biggest diaspora events of Prime Minister Modi at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi were going fine, but the participation was reduced because of the weather,” said community leader Sajeev Purushothaman, while speaking to PTI.

The officials have received around 60,000 registrations for the interaction. However, now 35,000 to 40,000 people, which include those who will present cultural programmes, are likely to attend the interaction.&nbsp;

The prime minister's UAE visit will be his seventh visit since 2015, and his third visit in the last eight months.&nbsp;

Sixty-four bloodied bodies have been found along a stretch of road in Papua New Guinea's remote highlands, police said Monday, a gruesome escalation of long-running violence between local warring tribes.

The victims were believed to be tribal fighters who were ambushed by a rival group in the early hours of Sunday.

The incident occurred near the town of Wabag, about 600 kilometres (370 miles) northwest of the capital Port Moresby.&nbsp;

The rugged and lawless area has for years been the scene of tit-for-tat mass killings between rival Sikin, Ambulin, Kaekin and other tribesmen.

Graphic police images from the scene showed stripped and bloodied bodies lying by the side of the road and piled up on the back of a flatbed truck.

Some men had limbs hacked and were left naked by the road with beer bottles or cans placed on their chests.

Police on Monday said gunfights were ongoing in nearby valleys and bodies were still being recovered from bushland near the road.

"We believe there are still some bodies... out there in the bush," Assistant Commissioner of Police Samson Kua said.

Clans have fought each other in Papua New Guinea's highlands for centuries, but an influx of mercenaries and automatic weapons has made clashes more deadly and escalated the cycle of violence.

Kua said the gunmen had used a veritable armoury, including SLR, AK-47, M4, AR15 and M16 rifles, as well as pump-action shotguns and home-made firearms.

The province's acting police commander Patrick Peka said many of the dead were believed to be mercenaries -- men who roam the countryside offering to help tribes settle scores with their rivals.

Papua New Guinea's government has tried suppression, mediation, gun amnesties and a range of other strategies to control the violence, with little success.

The military had deployed about 100 troops to the area, but their impact has been limited and the security services remain outnumbered and outgunned.
