Colombia's government on Friday (Feb 23) announced that it would launch an underwater exploration effort in order to investigate and recover artefacts that were discovered on a Spanish galleon that sank in the Colombian Caribbean over 300 years ago.

The officials said that for the exploration mission, they would use an underwater robot guided by the multi-purpose vessel that would gather information about the sunken ship.

The robot would extract items from the outside of the galleon so as to see "how they materialize when they come out (of the water) and to understand what we can do" to recover the rest of the treasures, said Culture Minister Juan David Correa.

The ship called San Jose, which historians believe carried one of the largest unsalvaged maritime treasures, sank in the year 1708 near the historical Caribbean port of Cartagena. The wreckage of the sunken ship was located in 2015.

Colombia is set to invest about $4.5 million in the scientific mission which is set to begin in the second half of 2024.

So far, sonar pictures have revealed weaponry, ceramics, artefacts, and bronze cannons specifically designed for the ship.

The Columbian government on Friday (Feb 23) also said that it had legally started arbitration proceedings with the US company Sea Search Armada, LLC over the patrimonial rights of the ship.

The firm is claiming $10 billion, corresponding to what it alleges is worth 50 per cent of the ship's treasure&nbsp;discovered in 1982.

Correa said that the scientific mission will enable them to perform inter-institutional work that will help train new generations in the social appropriation of knowledge through scientific research. &nbsp;&nbsp;

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Friday (Feb 24) that Israel's plans of building new settlements in occupied West Bank were "inconsistent with international law". He was speaking at a news conference in Buenos Aires. He said that the United States was "disappointed" after Israel's announcement and that construction of new settlements was counterproductive to enduring peace in the region.

"They're also inconsistent with international law. Our administration maintains a firm opposition to settlement expansion, and in our judgment this only weakens, doesn't strengthen, Israel's security," Blinken said.

Blinken's comment were also a signal that the US was returning to its longstanding policy, which was reversed by former US president Donald Trump.

In November 2019, Trump's then secretary of state Mike Pompeo announced that Washington no longer viewed Israel's settlements on West Bank land it captured in the 1967 Middle East war as "inconsistent with international law", a reversal of four decades of US policy.

The Biden administration has maintained that expansion of Israeli settlements was counterproductive to lasting peace. However, Blinken's comment was the first time a top official in the current administration said that expansion of settlements was inconsistent with international law.

Blinken's statement has come a day after Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich spoke of plans to greenlight 3300 homes to be built.

"On Monday, the Hungarian parliament will meet and take the necessary decisions, and with this we have closed one phase and opened a new one," he added.

On Friday, Kristersson was in the Hungarian capital Budapest.

"The conversation has been constructive and we have agreed to move forward in fields of common interests," Kristersson said at a press conference after talks with Orban.

"We do not agree on everything, but we do agree that we should work more actively together when we have common ground," he added.

Following the court ruling, George's legal representative, Allie Booker, announced intentions to appeal the decision in federal court. Australian police on Friday charged one of their own officers with the double murder of a TV presenter and his flight attendant boyfriend, whose bodies have yet to be found.

Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said a 28-year-old serving police constable was charged with two counts of murder, after a high-profile three-day search across Sydney.

Earlier this week, the chance discovery of bloodied clothes in a suburban rubbish bin led detectives to the home of former red carpet host and entertainment journalist Jesse Baird, 26.&nbsp;

On searching Baird's inner-city flat, detectives said they found "a large amount of blood" and held "grave concerns" for both him and his boyfriend, Qantas flight attendant Luke Davies, 29.&nbsp;

The pair are presumed dead.

A projectile found at the apartment matched that of a police-issue firearm.&nbsp;

The weapon has since been found inside a police station safe.

The accused officer was said to have been in a relationship with Baird until recently, when it ended badly.

Baird had been a presenter on Australia's Network Ten.

On Friday the officer turned himself in to Bondi Police Station, near the country's famed beach.

Footage of the arrest shows him handcuffed and escorted into the building wearing a dark baseball cap and sneakers.&nbsp;

He remains in custody and police will oppose granting bail.

Australian media reported that the suspect had been a celebrity chaser and blogger before joining the police force, and had been photographed with Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Ben Stiller and scores of others.

He was previously investigated over the aggressive tasering of an Aboriginal man in 2020, after video of the incident emerged online.

News reports from 2014 indicate that he came out publicly as gay by throwing a letter onstage at a Lady Gaga concert, which the star read out to a crowd that included his sister.&nbsp;

"Charges have been submitted for two counts of murder," said Doherty, adding that the police focus was now on locating the bodies of the two missing men.

Police allege the remains of the two men were transported in a white van and disposed of.

Forensic examinations of the van are ongoing.
