"At about 1:00 p.m. Moscow time, an IL-76 military transport aircraft crashed during takeoff for a scheduled flight in the Ivanovo region," the Defence Ministry was quoted as saying by the state-run TASS news agency.

"According to reports from the scene, the cause of the disaster was a fire in one of the engines during takeoff of the aircraft," the Defence Ministry added.

Eight crew members and seven passengers were reportedly onboard the aircraft.

The latest crash comes weeks after an IL-76 plane that Moscow claimed had been carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war crashed in the Russian region close to region with Ukraine. Russian authorities had claimed that Ukrainian Armed Forces had shot down the aircraft in the Belgorod region.

Romanian authorities have detained online influencer Andrew Tate and served him with a British arrest warrant, according to his spokesperson.

The setback for Space One and the rocket industry in Japan comes as the government and investors ramp up support for the sector amid a national security buildup and skyrocketing demand for commercial satellites.

The 18-metre (59 ft) rocket exploded five seconds after lifting off, leaving behind a large cloud of smoke, a fire, fragments of the rocket and sprays of firefighting water near the launch pad on the tip of mountainous Kii peninsula in western Japan, visible on local media livestreams.

"The rocket terminated the flight after judging that the achievement of its mission would be difficult," company president Masakazu Toyoda said.

Space One did not specify what triggered self-destruction after the first-stage engine ignited - or when the company would launch the next Kairos - only pledging an investigation into the explosion.

The company said that the launch is highly automated, requiring only about a dozen ground staff, and that the rocket self-destructs when it detects errors in its flight path, speed, or control system that could cause a crash that endangers people on the ground.

"We don't use the world 'failure', because each trial brings us ... new data and experience for another challenge," Toyoda told a news conference.

There were no injuries near the launch pad, and the fire has been extinguished, Shuhei Kishimoto, governor of Wakayama prefecture, told reporters.

Kairos carried an experimental government satellite that can temporarily replace intelligence satellites in orbit if they fall offline.

Space One had planned the launch for Saturday but postponed it after a ship entered the nearby restricted sea area.

<h2>'Space courier services'</h2>

Although Japan is a relatively small player in the space race, the nation's rocket developers are scrambling to build cheaper vehicles to capture booming demand for satellite launches from its government and from global clients.

Tokyo-based Space One was established in 2018 by a consortium of Japanese companies: Canon Electronics, the aerospace engineering unit of IHI, construction firm Shimizu and the state-backed Development Bank of Japan. Two of Japan's biggest banks, Mitsubishi UFJ and Mizuho, also own minority stakes.

Shares in Canon Electronics fell as much as 13 per cent, while IHI shares were down as much as 2 per cent after Wednesday's failed launch.

Space One wants to offer "space courier services" to domestic and international clients, aiming to launch 20 rockets a year by the late 2020s, Toyoda has said. Although the company delayed Kairos' inaugural launch window four times, it said orders for its second and third planned trips have been filled, including by an overseas customer.

Kairos is composed of three stages of solid-fuel engines and a liquid-fuel post-boost stage engine, attempting to carry payloads of up to 250 kg to low-Earth orbit.

Space One does not disclose Kairos' launch costs, but company executive Kozo Abe said it is "competitive enough" against American rival Rocket Lab.

Rocket Lab has launched more than 40 Electron small rockets from New Zealand since 2017 at roughly $7 million per flight. Several Japanese companies have used Electron for their missions, including radar satellite makers iQPS and Synspective, and orbital debris-removal startup Astroscale.

<h2>Revitalising an industry</h2>

Partnering with the United States, Japan is seeking to revitalise its domestic aerospace industry to counter technological and military rivals China and Russia.

Last month, state-funded Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) successfully launched its new cost-efficient flagship rocket, the H3. JAXA completed a historic "pinpoint" moon landing this year, and the H3 is scheduled to carry about 20 satellites and probes to the space by 2030.

Before that, however, JAXA had faced a series of setbacks. H3's inaugural flight failed last year, as did another flight of a smaller rocket, Epsilon, in 2022. In July 2023, an upgraded engine for Epsilon exploded at JAXA's testing site.

In 2019, Interstellar Technologies conducted Japan's first privately developed rocket launch with its MOMO series, although without a full-scale satellite payload.

The government last year promised "comprehensive" support for space startups with technology critical for national security, as it seeks to build satellite constellations to ramp up intelligence capabilities.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday (Mar 13) warned the West that the country was technically prepared for nuclear war and that if the United States sent its troops to Ukraine, it would lead to a significant escalation.

Speaking days ahead of the March 15-17 election in which Putin is certain to clinch victory and remain in power for the next six years, the Russian president said that the nuclear war scenario was not "rushing" up and as of now there is no need of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

"From a military-technical point of view, we are, of course, ready," said Putin, while speaking to Rossiya-1 television and news agency RIA when asked if the country was prepared for a nuclear war.

Putin added that the United States understood that if American troops were deployed on Russian territory or in Ukraine, Russia would see it as an intervention.

"Therefore, I don't think that here everything is rushing to it (nuclear confrontation), but we are ready for this," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>'Weapons exist to be used'&nbsp;</h2>

Putin said that the Kremlin's nuclear doctrine clearly specifies&nbsp;the circumstances in which nuclear weapons may be used by the country.&nbsp;

"Weapons exist in order to use them. We have our own principles," said Putin.&nbsp;

Till now, Russia and the United States are the largest nuclear powers and have more than 90 per cent of the nuclear weapons present in the world under their control.

"Russia is ready for negotiations on Ukraine, but they should be based on reality - and not on cravings after the use of psychotropic drugs," said Putin.

Putin further said that Russia never faced the need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, against which it has waged a war since February 2022. "Why do we need to use weapons of mass destruction? There has never been such a need," he said.&nbsp;

India continues to be the world’s largest arms importer, with Russia being the prime source of its procurement despite declining share in past years, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) reported on Monday (Mar 11).

India accounted for 9.8 per cent of the total global imports during 2019-2023. India’s arms imports increased 4.7 per cent between 2014-18 and 2019-23, despite the government’s continued efforts to boost domestic defence manufacturing and procurement.

However, Russia's share in Indian exports is slowly falling. In the period under review,&nbsp;Russia accounted for 36 per cent of India’s total arms imports, a first after the 1960-64 term when Russia’s share fell short of the 50 per cent mark.

The share is further expected to fall as India turns to France and the US for military hardware and Russia gets occupied with meeting its domestic demands in the face of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

France accounted for 33 per cent of India’s total arms imports while the figure stood at 13 per cent for the US. With the direct acquisition of 31 armed MQ-9B Sky Guardian drones from the US for $3.9 billion as well as 26 Rafale-M fighters from France for $6 billion, the share of the two countries is likely to go up in the current five-year period.

<h2>The China factor</h2>

Arms imports by Japan and South Korea, two of China’s key neighbours, were also up by 155 per cent and 6.5 per cent respectively.

According to experts, this trend was driven by concerns over China’s continued aggression in the Indo-Pacific region.

"There is little doubt that the sustained high levels of arms imports by Japan and other US allies and partners in Asia and Oceania are largely driven by one key factor: concern over China's ambitions," said Siemon Wezeman, Senior Researcher with the SIPRI Arms Transfers Programme.

The BJP will contest on six of state's 25 Lok Sabha seats, while the TDP will contest on 17 seats. Pawan Kalyan's Jana Sena will contest two seats. For state assembly elections, the BJP will contest on 10 seats while the TDP will contest on 144 seats. The Jana Sena will contest on 21 seats in the state assembly.&nbsp;

"The names of the seats will be announced subsequently by the respective parties. We are driven by a desire to fulfil the expectations of the people of Andhra Pradesh. We are confident that the people of Andhra Pradesh will bless the NDA alliance partners with an opportunity to serve them to the best of our capabilities," the TDP readout added.&nbsp;

In other election-related developments, Prime Minister Modi will chair a high-powered committee on selecting election commissioners on March 14. The names of two new election commissioners will reportedly be finalised in this meeting. As per reports, the meeting originally scheduled for March 15 has been preponed by a day.

Rebelo de Sousa, who will meet with political parties from Tuesday until March 20, told Expresso newspaper on Friday he would do everything he could to prevent Chega from gaining power. Those remarks drew criticism as the head of state is mandated to remain neutral.

Chega's leader Andre Ventura told reporters the vote clearly showed that the country wants a government of the AD with Chega.

The outcome was broadly in line with pre-election opinion polls but the AD's victory was significantly smaller and Chega's growth was larger than predicted, political scientist Andre Azevedo Alves told Reuters.

Alves, a professor at Lisbon's Catolica University and St. Mary's University in London, added that the fragility of an AD government due to its reliance on either the PS or Chega to pass legislation made it unlikely to last for several years.

Javier Rouillet from rating agency DBRS Morningstar warned that if the new government was unable to pass legislation, another round of elections could be held later this year or in early 2025.

Chega's surge was boosted by widespread dissatisfaction with the mainstream parties and Ventura's communication skills, he said, factors that could help it garner even better results in the European Parliament (EP) elections.

"Political disaffection was brewing for a very long time," said political scientist Pedro Magalhaes, at the Lisbon's Institute of Social Sciences (ICS). "But there was no political supply to address this political demand."

Marina Costa Lobo, who heads ICS, said she believed Montenegro would keep his word and not strike a formal deal with Chega but there might be "piecemeal" agreements between the two going forward.

"It's difficult to predict Chega's behaviour because they're an anti-system party," she said, adding the far-right's success in&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;was a harbinger of what can be expected in the EP election in June.

Eurointelligence consultants said the result marked a new political chapter in&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;after alternate governance by two mainstream parties for the past 50 years.

"We don't know who'll be in charge of the country, the far-right has little or nothing to offer," PhD student Jorge Catanheira, 29, told Reuters.

The election result underscored a political tilt to the far right across Europe and a dwindling of Socialist governance.

Chega has since 2020 been part of the European Parliament's Identity &amp; Democracy group, which is expected to see gains in June.

They succeeded in a fourteenth round in January following which the UK negotiators flew back to London without any public breakthrough announced. Meanwhile, India on Sunday (March 10) signed a $100 billion Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) bloc. Days before his death, Boeing's lawyers and his own attorney had cross-examined Barnett. The court was hoping that Barnett would answer more questions on Saturday (Mar 9), however, he did not appear as planned.

According to BBC, Barnett was later found dead in his truck. The truck was parked in the parking garage of a hotel.

Barnett had&nbsp;been working as a quality manager at the North Charleston plant since 2010 and making the 787 Dreamliner, which is a state-of-the-art airliner that is generally used on long-haul routes.

Speaking to BBC in 2019, Barnett said that the workers were pressurised to deliberately fit sub-standard parts in the aircraft being produced.&nbsp;

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels attacked the United States ship 'Pinocchio' with missiles in the Red Sea, as per a speech by the military spokesperson of the group which was televised early on Tuesday (Mar 12).

The Pinocchio is a container ship which carries the Liberian flag and is owned by Singapore-registered company Om-Mar 5 Inc, according to the public databases operated by Equasis and the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea said that the military operations will be escalated by the group during Ramadan, an Islamic holy month, in solidarity with the Palestinians.&nbsp;

“The Yemeni Armed Forces have confirmed that they will continue to prevent Israeli navigation or these (ships) heading to the ports of occupied Palestine in the Red and Arab Seas until the aggression stops and the siege on the Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip is lifted," he added.

“The Yemeni Armed Forces confirm that their military operations will be escalated, with the help of Allah the Almighty, during the month of Ramadan, the month of jihad, in support of the oppressed Palestinian people and for our mujahideen brothers in the Gaza Strip," the spokesperson said.

<h2>US-British coalition airstrikes kill 11&nbsp;</h2>

Meanwhile, the US-British coalition carried out airstrikes on Monday (Mar 11) on port cities and small towns in western Yemen in which at least 11 people lost their lives and 14 others were injured while defending commercial shipping, said a spokesperson for Yemen’s internationally recognised government, while speaking to Reuters.
