<p>"These public service workers have dedicated their careers to serving their communities, but because of past administrative failures, never got the relief they were entitled to under the law," Biden said in a statement.</p>

<p>As of June 2023, about 43.4 million U.S. student loan recipients had $1.63 trillion in outstanding loans, according to the Federal Student Aid website. Higher education debt has tripled since the 2008 financial crisis.</p>

<p>A man from Texas boarded a Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Austin, Texas, using a child's boarding card. The man was found hiding in a toilet prior to takeoff and was later arrested.</p>

<p>The 26-year-old Wicliff Fleurizard, a native of George, Texas, was taken off Flight 1683 on Sunday (Mar 17) by Salt Lake City Police officers when it was discovered that he was not a passenger.</p>

<p>He boarded the plane from Salt Lake City International Airport and stayed in the front lavatory for an extended period of time, according to a report by USA Today.</p>

<p>It was then verified that Wicliff was not a passenger on the aircraft after giving the flight attendant his name and seat number.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the records, flight attendants attempted to look up Wicliff's name to check if he was on that particular Delta Air Lines aircraft or any others, but they were unable to find him. As a result, the jet was forced to do a U-turn and return to the boarding bridge, where Salt Lake City police officers were notified.</p>

<p>As the plane reached back to the airport, the police officers arrived, they questioned the Delta Air Lines staff and discovered that a passenger, who was travelling alone, was having trouble boarding the flight.</p>

<p>Security showed Wicliff taking pictures of many travellers' boarding passes without their awareness, according to court records.</p>

<p>When the minor went to scan their boarding pass, a message alerted the Delta agent that this particular passenger was already on board.</p>

<p>A new kind of fish, having&nbsp;giant eyes, massive head&nbsp;and feather-like fins has been found off the coast of Thailand.</p>

<p>The rare creature has been named Chimaera supapae. Chimaeras, which are also known as "ghost sharks", are a&nbsp;kind of cartilaginous fish that are not related to the rays and sharks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Live Science, Cartilaginous fish are some of the oldest fishes which are still found.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As explained by the researchers, the newly found species is one type of shortnose chimaera.</p>

Giorgia Meloni sues father-son duo over pornographic deepfake

<p>A court in Russia gave orders to place two bar workers in police custody after they were accused of playing important roles in an “extremist organisation” under the country's legislation which criminalises the LGBTQ+ community.</p>

<p>This is the first time such a criminal case has been filed in Russia since the “international LGBT movement” was banned in November.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The court chose a preventive measure for the art director and administrator of the Pose bar,” said the Orenburg tribunal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the court, the two bar workers will stay in police custody till May 18 and can face an imprisonment of 10 years, if convicted, as per the court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, the two suspects were accused by the tribunal of “promoting non-traditional sexual relations among the visitors of the bar”.</p>

<p>In March, the bar was raided by law enforcement and the videos which showed the humiliating detentions of some visitors of the bar were shared online.</p>

<p>The “international LGBT movement” has been vaguely described by Russia publicly which paved the path for the court to prosecute anyone who has been protecting LGBTQ+ rights or identifies with the community.</p>

<p>League of the Safe Internet director Ekaterina Mizulin appreciated the criminal proceedings.</p>

<p>“This is the first criminal case in Russia after the decision of the Supreme Court to recognise LGBT as an extremist movement,” Mizulina said.&nbsp;</p>

This is the first time such a criminal case has been filed in Russia since the “international LGBT movement” was banned in November. “The court chose a preventive measure for the art director and administrator of the Pose bar,” said the Orenburg tribunal. As per the court, the two bar workers will stay in police custody till May 18 and can face an imprisonment of 10 years, if convicted, as per the court. Earlier, the two suspects were accused by the tribunal of “promoting non-traditional sexual relations among the visitors of the bar”. In March, the bar was raided by law enforcement and the videos which showed the humiliating detentions of some visitors of the bar were shared online. The “international LGBT movement” has been vaguely described by Russia publicly which paved the path for the court to prosecute anyone who has been protecting LGBTQ+ rights or identifies with the community. League of the Safe Internet director Ekaterina Mizulin appreciated the criminal proceedings. “This is the first criminal case in Russia after the decision of the Supreme Court to recognise LGBT as an extremist movement,” Mizulina said. <p>A 59-year-old man from the US state of Georgia, who was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend in 1993, was put to death on Wednesday (Mar 20) in the state's first execution in more than four years. The last execution happened in January 2020.</p>

<p>Willie James Pye received an injection of the sedative pentobarbital and was pronounced dead on Wednesday night at the state prison in Jackson, a report by the news agency Associated Press said.</p>

<p>Pye was asked by the warden whether he wanted to say any final words, and he indicated no. On being asked if he wanted a prayer said for him, Pye indicated that he did. A member of the clergy then said a brief prayer, asking God to help the 59-year-old experience some grace and mercy, the report said.</p>

<h2><strong>The case</strong></h2>

<p>Pye had been in an on-and-off relationship with Alicia Lynn Yarbrough. He had been sentenced to die for his conviction in the November 1993 abduction, rape, and shooting death of Yarbrough.</p>

<p>At the time of her death, Yarbrough was living with another man. According to prosecutors, Pye, Chester Adams, and a 15-year-old planned to rob the woman's partner and bought a weapon before heading to a party nearby.</p>

<p>The trio left the party around midnight and went to the house where Yarbrough lived with her baby. They forced their way into the house and forced the woman to go with them, leaving the baby alone, the prosecutors said.</p>

<p>The trio drove Yarbrough to a motel where they raped her and then left the motel with her in the car. Citing court filings, the report said that Pye ordered his ex-girlfriend out of the car and shot her.</p>

<p>The woman's body was found on November 17, 1993, a few hours after she was killed. Pye and Adams denied knowing about her death but the teenager confessed and implicated the other two. The teenager became the main witness in Pye's trial.</p>

<p>In 1996, a jury found Pye guilty of murder, kidnapping, armed robbery, rape, and burglary and sentenced him to death.</p>

<h2><strong>The arguments of Pye's lawyers</strong></h2>

<p>As the trial began, Pye's lawyers argued that prosecutors relied heavily on the teenager’s testimony but that he later gave inconsistent statements. In court filings, the lawyers said that such statements as well as Pye's testimony indicated that Yarbrough left the home willingly and went to the motel to trade sex for drugs.</p>

<p>The lawyers also said that their client was raised in extreme poverty, and suffered from frontal lobe brain damage, potentially caused by fetal alcohol syndrome, which harmed his planning ability and impulse control.</p>

<p>The report said that his lawyers filed late appeals urging the US Supreme Court to step in, but the justices unanimously rejected to stop the execution. They argued that Georgia had not met the necessary conditions for resuming executions after the COVID-19 pandemic and reiterated arguments that Pye was ineligible for execution due to an intellectual disability.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, state responses argued the claims had been previously settled by the courts and were without merit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan’s defence ministry&nbsp;on Thursday (Mar 21) said that 32 Chinese military aircraft were detected around the island in the past 24 hours which is the second-highest number this year. The island’s top security official told President Tsai Ing-wen he does not currently recommend her to visit the South China Sea amid possible risk to her flight from “relevant countries".</p>

<h2><strong>32 Chinese warplanes, five ships around Taiwan</strong></h2>

<p>The ministry detected around five naval ships operating around Taiwan up until 6:00 am (local time)&nbsp;on Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Out of the 32 Chinese aircraft, 20 crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait and entered the island’s southwestern, southeastern, and eastern Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), said the defence ministry in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Taiwan’s defence ministry “monitored the situation and employed CAP (Combat air patrol) aircraft, Navy vessels, and coastal missile systems in response to the detected activities,” it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The self-governed island has previously accused China of threatening aviation safety and waging <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/taiwan-spots-more-chinese-balloons-over-strait-accuses-beijing-of-psychological-warfare-ahead-of-elections-677750">psychological warfare</a> on its people.</p>

<h2><strong>Taiwan president's visit to South China Sea</strong></h2>

<p>Taiwan National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen said on Thursday he does not recommend President Tsai to visit the South China Sea given Beijing’s military presence there.</p>

<p>China, Taiwan, and the Philippines are among those who have claimed parts of the South China Sea. However, the self-governed island only controls one main islet called Itu Aba, which Taiwan refers to as Taiping Island.</p>

<p>The Taiwanese president has faced calls from both her ruling party and the main opposition to visit the Itu Aba before she steps down in May to assert Taiwan’s sovereignty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the beginning of this year, Beijing and Manila have had several clashes in the South China Sea. Earlier this month, the Philippines slammed China for its <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/manila-slams-beijing-for-dangerous-manoeuvres-in-south-china-sea-which-left-4-crew-members-injured-696842">“dangerous manoeuvres”</a> in the disputed region which left at least four Filipino crew members injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked by lawmakers if China has ever interfered with the Taiwanese coast guard or military aircraft around Itu Aba, Tsai – who shares a common family name with the president – confirmed that it has happened.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The activities by Chinese “ships and aircraft in the South China Sea are very frequent,” he said, without elaborating.&nbsp;</p>
