The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday (March 21) that only the expansion of land crossings into Gaza could help prevent famine in the densely populated Palestinian enclave.

"Recent efforts to deliver food by air and sea are welcome, but only the expansion of land crossings will enable large scale deliveries to prevent famine," said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Five months of war have created critical food shortages among Gaza's 2.3 million Palestinians that in some areas now exceed famine levels, according to the United Nations.

The United States (US)&nbsp;has started to fly out its citizens from Haiti by helicopter as reports of fresh fighting emerged in the gang-dominated capital of the Caribbean country.

Speaking to the reporters, State Department spokesperson Vedant Patel on Wednesday (Mar 20) said that the government-chartered aircraft have started the process of ferrying the Americans from Port-au-Prince to the Dominican Republic.

“The violence on the ground in Port-au-Prince has been dire and the security situation is certainly one of high risk but we would not conduct such an operation if we did not feel it was safe to do so and we did not have the expertise to conduct something like this,” said Patel.

According to Patel, the evacuation flights are likely to fly on a day-to-day basis and will carry 30 Americans.

A US district judge, on Wednesday (Mar 20) handed two former deputies in the state of Mississippi lengthy prison sentences after they pleaded guilty to torturing two Black men.

<h2>What happened in court?</h2>

Condemning their cruel attack, the US District Judge Tom Lee sentenced 29-year-old former Rankin County sheriff’s deputy Christian Dedmon to 40 years in prison saying that he committed the most “shocking, brutal and cruel acts imaginable,” against the two Black men, Michael Jenkins and Eddie Parker and a White man at a traffic stop weeks prior.&nbsp;

Daniel Opdyke, 28, a former sheriff’s deputy, was also sentenced to 17.5 years in prison. The court heard details of the racially motivated beatings, torture, sexual assaults and even a mock execution.&nbsp;

Jenkins said that Dedmon, who received the harshest sentence so far, was the “most wicked” than any of those who attacked him, in a statement read by his lawyer since he could not speak after being shot in the mouth during the January 2023 attack.&nbsp;

He also called the 29-year-old the “worst example of a police officer in the United States”.&nbsp;

Some members of Dedmon’s family, present in the courtroom, were seen crying and closing their eyes as the prosecutors recounted his conduct. The 29-year-old former deputy did not look at Jenkins and Parker when he apologised.&nbsp;

The sentencing on Wednesday afternoon focused on Dedmon and his sexual assault on one of the victims. Malik Shabazz, the attorney for Jenkins and Parker called the 29-year-old former deputy “sick” and prosecutors said that he had subjected the duo to the most egregious sexual acts.

Before Dedmon was sentenced, Opdyke profusely cried and said “The weight of my actions and the harm I’ve caused will haunt me every day.”

On Tuesday (Mar 19), Lee sentenced two other deputies, 31-year-old Hunter Elward, who shot Jenkins during the mock execution, to 20 years in prison and Jeffrey Middleton, 46, to 17.5 years.&nbsp;

Overall, the AD won 80 seats in the 230-seat legislature, which is expected to return next week, followed by the Socialists at 78 seats and Chega, which was founded just five years ago, with 50.

"The AD won the election...(so) the president...decided to nominate Luis Montenegro as prime minister," the president's office said in a statement.

The result underscores a political tilt to right-wing populism and a dwindling of Socialist governance across Europe, which is expected to result in gains for far-right parties in European elections in June.

After being named premier, Montenegro told reporters the government would be sworn in on April 2. Within 10 days of that date must present its programme to parliament, which is automatically approved unless parliament holds a vote to reject it.

Montenegro added that he would present his cabinet of ministers to Rebelo de Sousa next Thursday.

Analysts expect an AD government will be allowed to take over, and they see the 2025 budget as its first test of survival toward the end of this year. A rejected budget could lead to a new election.

The United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) on Wednesday (Mar 20) released an updated assessment of the Gaza Strip, highlighting the extent of damage inflicted on buildings in the region amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.&nbsp;

The recent analysis based on satellite imagery stated that around 35 per cent of Gaza Strip structures have been damaged since the conflict began.&nbsp;

<h2>Satellite image assessment&nbsp;</h2>

UNOSAT noted that the analysis is based on very high-resolution satellite imagery collected on&nbsp;February 29, 2024. The image revealed a significant increase in destruction compared to previous assessments.&nbsp;

An official release mentioned that UNOSAT compared the image with others dated: May 1 and May 10 in 2023; September 18, 2023; October 15 in 2023; November 7 and 26 in 2023; and January 6 and 7 in 2024.&nbsp;

The report mentioned that 35 per cent of&nbsp;buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged. The percentage represents 88,868 structures, among which 31,198 of them have been identified as destroyed. A total of 16,908 have been severely damaged, and 40,762 are moderately damaged.&nbsp;

Israel-Hamas War The war between Israel and Hamas began when the Islamist group launched an unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, according to official figures released by Israel. Israel vowed to eliminate Hamas and launched a massive military offensive in Gaza, which also included ground incursions. Since the war started, Israeli forces have killed more than 31,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. The image revealed a significant increase in destruction compared to previous assessments. An official release mentioned that UNOSAT compared the image with others dated: May 1 and May 10 in 2023; September 18, 2023; October 15 in 2023; November 7 and 26 in 2023; and January 6 and 7 in 2024. The report mentioned that 35 per cent of buildings in the Gaza Strip have been damaged. The percentage represents 88,868 structures, among which 31,198 of them have been identified as destroyed. New research suggests that pregnant women who are exposed to extreme heat are more prone to the risk of stillbirths and miscarriages. The trend of hotter summers due to climate change can not only affect mothers-to-be in tropical regions but also countries such as the UK, the study says.

The study, which started in 2017, is conducted by the Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research (SRIHER) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

About eight hundred women from the southern state of India took part in the research. Half of them used to work in environments where there is more exposure to sunlight and heat, like brick kilns, agriculture and flats. The other half of the lot was employed in cooler workspaces such as schools and hospitals.

Though there is no universal threshold for how much heat is considered to be too hot, the impact of heat on the human body is rather dependent on the difference between how much heat we are used to and how much heat our body is used to, explains Professor Jane Hirst, one of the scientists related to the research.&nbsp;

<h2>Working in extreme heat can double pregnancy risks such as miscarriage and stillbirth</h2>

Though the study was conducted under Indian climate and weather, the same goes for pregnant women all over the world. Prof Hirst, who is a UK-based consultant obstetrician, and Professor of Global Women's Health at medical research organisation The George Institute, said that it is true that pregnant women in India are “at the forefront of experiencing climate change”.&nbsp;

But as Earth’s average temperature is expected to rise by three degrees by the end of the century, the World Health Organization (WHO) has already issued a warning of an "existential threat to all of us" with pregnant women facing "some of the gravest consequences".

Previous studies have shown that with rising heat waves, there has been a 15 per cent rise in the risk of premature birth and stillbirth. The point to be noted here is that these studies were conducted in countries like the US and Australia.&nbsp;

The latest findings from this study are more worrying and have wider implications, as per Prof Hirst.&nbsp;

"The UK is getting hotter summers, and while it's not as hot as India, these adverse effects [on pregnancies] can be seen at much lower temperatures in more temperate climates, such as the UK," said Prof Hirst.&nbsp;

There is currently no official international advice for pregnant working women in the heat.

For the study in India, the researchers used what is called the wet-bulb-globe-temperature (WBGT), which measures the effects of temperature, humidity, wind speed and radiant heat on human bodies.

WBGT readings are often lower than the temperatures you might see forecast on the TV or a weather app.

The safe heat threshold for people doing heavy work is 27.5C WBGT, according to the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
