The United States called the sudden withdrawal of the Israeli military's troops from the southern Gaza Strip a "rest and refit" plan and not something which indicates any new operations.&nbsp;

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby, in an interview with ABC News, said, "As we understand it, and through their public announcements, it is really just about rest and refit for these troops ... and not necessarily that we can tell indicative of some coming new operation for these troops."&nbsp;

Earlier, the Israeli military announced that it is withdrawing troops from south Gaza and that there will be only one brigade six months after the Israel-Hamas war started in the wake of the October 7 attack by the militant group on Israel.

Speaking about the timeline of statements issued by US President Joe Biden and others over the Israel-Hamas war, Kirby said, “I’m glad you brought that timeline up because it shows the degree … the growing degree of frustration that we’ve had with the way these operations are being prosecuted and the way that Israelis are acting on the ground in terms of civilian casualties."

“So we have been increasingly frustrated. And again, that was a core message that the president delivered to Prime Minister [Benjamin] Netanyahu in their phone call this … past week … that they’ve got to do more, they’ve got to make changes,” he added.

Kirby said that Netanyahu on Sunday (April 7) “assured” Biden that he will make changes in the military operations of Israel.

The Russian-installed administration, which was set up after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, reported the incident. According to Russian officials, no serious damage happened to the reactor and the radiation levels remained normal.

Rosatom claimed that three people were injured in the incident&nbsp;and one suffered serious injuries.&nbsp;

In a statement posted on the official Telegram channel of the plant, Russian authorities accused the Ukrainian military of using “self-exploding” drones against it.&nbsp;

As per a Ukrainian intelligence official, Kyiv did not carry out any strikes on the station, Reuters reported.

Defense Intelligence of Ukraine spokesperson Andriy Yusov, while speaking to Ukrainian news outlet Ukrainska Pravda, said, “The aggressor state is once again endangering the nuclear facility, civilians and the environment of the whole of Europe."

<h2>UN nuclear watchdog condemns attack</h2>

UN’s atomic watchdog agency head Rafael Grossi condemned the attack on the nuclear power plant.&nbsp;

He said that the attack was "reckless" and "a major escalation of the nuclear safety and security dangers" facing the plant. He further warned that such attacks “significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident”.&nbsp;

Grossi, in a statement on X, confirmed that at least three direct strikes were made against the main reactor containment structures of the plant.

"The Master of the vessel reports a missile impacted the water in close proximity to the vessel’s port quarter," UKMTO said in an advisory note.&nbsp;

"No damage to the vessel reported and crew reported safe," it added.

It did not specify who launched the projectile or&nbsp;provide further details. It wasn't immediately clear if the attacks reported by the British intelligence firm were the same as the ones claimed by the Houthi rebel group.

“Our diplomatic staff are leaving everything in Ecuador and returning home with their heads held high... after the assault on our embassy,” said Mexico’s Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena, on X.&nbsp;

The departure comes amid a growing rift between Mexico and Ecuador which had been going on for days and culminated on Friday (Apr 5) after Mexico granted political asylum to Glas, who served as VP under leftist former President Rafael Correa between 2013 and 2017.

Glas, 54, convicted twice for corruption, had sought shelter in the embassy in Quito since seeking political asylum in December.&nbsp;

<h2>The police raid</h2>

On Friday, Mexican president Andrés Manuel López Obrador took to X and said “police from Ecuador forcibly entered” his country’s embassy in Quito and took the former VP who “was a refugee and processing asylum because of the persecution and harassment he faces.”

The dramatic footage of the police raid shows heavily armed officers massing around the building and senior Mexican diplomat, Roberto Canseco being wrestled to the ground as Glas was driven away.&nbsp;

The Ecuadorian government of President Daniel Noboa later confirmed the arrest and said Glas was “sentenced to imprisonment by the Ecuadorian justice system,” in a statement.&nbsp;

The government said Glas had been granted diplomatic asylum “contrary to the conventional legal framework.”

The former VP has since been taken to a maximum-security prison in Guayaquil known as La Roca, said Ecuador’s national prisons agency, SNAI, on Saturday.&nbsp;

Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Peru, Uruguay and Venezuela condemned the move by Ecuadorian authorities, while Nicaragua joined Mexico in severing diplomatic ties with Quito over Noboa’s “astonishing and despicable act”.&nbsp;

Barcena expressed shock at Ecuador’s incursion into Mexico’s embassy in Quito calling it “a violent attack” perpetrated by the police and said that the country “reiterates its condemnation for the violation of the immunity of its embassy in Quito and the attack on its staff.”

She also went on to call it a “clear and flagrant violation of international law.”&nbsp;

As per international law, embassies are considered the sovereign territory of the country they represent. Additionally, the Vienna Convention says that a country cannot intrude upon an embassy on its territory.

“The secretary general is alarmed at the forced entry of Ecuadorian security forces into the premises of the Mexican embassy,” said the UN chief through his spokesperson on Sunday.&nbsp;

He added that violations of the sanctity of diplomatic and consular property “jeopardise the pursuit of normal international relations”.
