<h2>Authors recommend shutdown of coal plants</h2>

The authors of the GEM report, as per CNBC, have urged countries to accelerate the shutdown of coal plants and for nations like China to adopt stricter controls on the development and usage of new plants.

Flora Champenois, an analyst at Global Energy Monitor, emphasised the importance of this, stating, "Otherwise we can forget about meeting our goals in the Paris Agreement and reaping the benefits that a swift transition to clean energy will bring."

As per IEA estimates, to limit temperature rises within the key threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius, all global coal generation needs to cease by 2040. This, according to GEM, would require an average of 126 GW in coal plant capacity to be shut down annually for the next 17 years — equivalent to about two coal plants per week.

<h2>Broken promises</h2>

Despite China's commitment to reach net-zero by 2060 and its pledge to control and phase down coal consumption, the country started construction on 70.2 GW of new coal-power capacity last year, almost 20 times as much as the rest of the world combined. China also only retired about 3.7 GW of its coal capacity in 2023.

However, GEM remains optimistic and said that with "immediate and determined action," China can still meet its climate targets, including a goal set by the National Energy Administration in 2022 to retire 30 GW of coal power by 2025.

While low retirement rates contributed to coal's significant growth in 2023, the report expects these rates to accelerate in the US and Europe, potentially offsetting some new capacity in China.

<h2>The state of renewable energy in 2023</h2>

On the renewable energy front, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reported that global renewable capacity additions increased by almost 50 per cent to nearly 510 GW in 2023. This, as per the report, is the fastest growth rate in two decades.&nbsp;

"While the increases in renewable capacity in Europe, the United States and Brazil hit all-time highs, China's acceleration was extraordinary," said the report.

The nation commissioned as much solar capacity as the entire world did in 2022 and saw a 66 per cent year-on-year increase in wind additions.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Sunday (April 14) warned the international community against descending deeper into&nbsp;conflict as Israel called for "all possible sanctions" against Iran.

Guterres was addressing the Security Council meeting which was held to address the weekend attack by Iran on Israel in which Tehran fired more than 300 missiles and drones at Tel Aviv in response to the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria.

"Neither the region nor the world can afford more war. The Middle East is on the brink," said Guterres, while speaking at the Security Council.&nbsp;

"The people of the region are confronting a real danger of a devastating full-scale conflict. Now is the time to defuse and de-escalate," he said&nbsp;and appealed for "maximum restraint."

In his speech, Guterres condemned the strikes launched by Iran on Israel and the attack allegedly carried out by the Israeli government at&nbsp;the Iranian consulate in Damascus.&nbsp;

Massive floods struck Oman on Sunday (Apr 14) claiming the lives of at least 12 people. The deceased included nine students, two Omani citizens and an expatriate whose vehicles were washed away by the floodwaters, according to Oman News Agency.

Five people were also reported missing in the flash floods, and as per local media reports, a search for them is currently underway.

The United Kingdom rebuffed Iran's claims that Tehran notified in advance before launching missile and drone attacks against Israel.

"I would reject that characterisation," a spokesman for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Monday (Apr 15). "And more broadly, we condemn in the strongest possible terms their direct attack against Israel."

Iran's Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Sunday said that Tehran had informed its neighbouring countries about its retaliatory strikes on Israel almost 72 hours in advance.

“About 72 hours prior to our operations, we informed our friends and neighbours in the region that Iran’s response against Israel was certain, legitimate, and irrevocable,” Amirabdollahian said at a press briefing.

Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron urged Israel not to launch any retaliatory offensive against Iran stating that Tel Aviv should "think with head as well as heart" as Tehran's strike was a near-total failure.

Iran on Saturday night had launched over 300 missiles and drones that reportedly caused moderate damage in Israel as most of them were shot down by its Iron Dome defence system and with help from the US, Britain, France and Jordan.

"I think they're perfectly justified to think they should respond because they have been attacked, but we are urging them as friends to think with the head as well as heart, to be smart as well as tough," Cameron said.

He said that he was urging Israel not to escalate the conflict in the Middle East.

"In many ways, this has been a double defeat for Iran. The attack was an almost total failure, and they revealed to the world that they were the malign influence in the region prepared to do this. So our hope is that there won't be a retaliatory response," he added.
