Regarding the safety of Indian nationals in Israel, Gilon assured, "All people in Israel are protected." Currently, approximately 18,000 Indian nationals reside in the country. WION: Over the weekend we have seen a major escalation in West Asia, the Iranians striking in Israel. With me is the Israeli ambassador to New Delhi - to talk about the current situation. So welcome to WION - it's a pleasure to speak to you again. My first question which everyone is keen to ask is - what is the current situation and what kind of response we are looking for from the Israeli side?&nbsp;

Naor Gilon: Well, you know - Iran for years is having a&nbsp;proxy war with Israel - so they are using different proxies but the peak of course came on Oct 7 and following that when Hamas - one of the proxies of Iran - attacked in Israel in a brutal attack and killed 1,200 people with terrible atrocities. Following that, other proxies of Iran and when I speak of proxies these are organisations that Iran is training, financing and equipping. So other proxies which are Hezbollah in Lebanon - they open fire, Shia militias in Iraq and Syria and of course the Houthis in the south, shooting the ships and disrupting international shipping. What happened 2 days ago when Iran for the first time ever attacked directly Israel with about 350 cruise missiles and UAVs? All together these carried about 60 tons of explosives that they were directing at the Israeli population. Luckily in cooperation with very good friends in the region, the US and other friends regions - but mostly by our technology and Airforce we intercepted 99% of the incoming missiles and UAVs and we were able to prevent damage, only one was wounded directly from this was a Bedouin Muslim girl - 7-year-old who is severely hit and I hope she will recover - so that was a great success but you know being back to mind the question of Iran possessing, for example, nuclear capabilities as they are hoping to have and this is you know - you make the connection between the ability to shoot rockets with the willingness and speaking about the destruction of the state of Israel to nuclear capacity, this is a disastrous combination. You can also act to it - piracy that you can see, state piracy by Iran that is stopping in international waters, ship hijacking the ship, taking the hostage - the crew of 17 Indians and also other nationals. This is totally unacceptable and the international community has to unite in order to put pressure on Iran and to stop financing terror, stop stabilising the region, stop piracy and start behaving like a normal country in the world.

WION: But what kind of response we are looking for from Israel - are we looking at a counter-action by the Israelis which could see escalation?

Naor Gilon: I think that this is a tremendous escalation by Iran for the first time in history shooting, not by proxy but directly from Iran to Israel we'll have to - though we were able to stop any serious damage from this attack, still we have to retaliate and send the message that this is unacceptable - we will do it at our own time when we'll find it right and what we find fit.

WION: So retaliation is for sure coming - do you see that coming in the next few days, months or anything? 
Naor Gilon: As I said we will do it on our terms - when we feel this is the right way, right time - that's when we will do it.

WION: So now moving to the India bit - we have seen the Indian External Affairs Minister speaking to your foreign minister - we have seen an India statement as well - how do you see India's position amidst the ongoing escalation in the West Asian region?

Naor Gilon: So India is an important country in the world and a very influential country, especially in our region - it's a great friend of Israel and we expect India to be one of the countries who is leading this international efforts. As I said before to put pressure on the Iranians, to stop everything, to stop the support of terrorism, destabilising, seeking nuclear weapons, stopping sea piracy, all of that has to stop. Iran has to be under tremendous international pressure, India alone will not be able to do it, but I hope India will be a part of a bigger effort in order to make this happen.

WION: So you see India using its Good offices to engage with Iran for de-escalation

Naor Gilon: Engaging with Iran so far did not bring.. many countries were engaging before the attack on Israel, countries tried to engage with Iran, but it seems that Iran is not engageable, Iran has to be under scrutiny. India did try, and India is still trying to engage both Israel and Iran to de-escalate but unfortunately, Iranians are behaving worse by the day. We have to go to the next level of pressure.

WION: The Indian nationals in Israel, the situation for them, especially for Indians going to the country as workers

Naor Gilon: I hope things calm down, I hope the travel warning will be lifted and people will continue coming. It serves both countries. When it comes to the safety and security of people, they are not different from Israelis. All people in Israel are protected, and our ability to intercept 99% of incoming missiles from Iran, we do our utmost, and for us, they are no different from Israelis than anyway. We working for the safety of Indian, Thai, Philippines nationals.

WION: Indian workers going to Israel, as construction workers, do you think that flow will continue?&nbsp;

Naor Gilon: I think, they went before when there was also a security situation, and one Indian died there. We pulled out Indians from the northern border area, in general, they would want to come once the travel ban is lifted, it will be much easier to come. The situation for the time being a little bit calmer, I would hope they would come, we need them, so it's a win-win situation. We do our utmost to protect everyone in Israel and I think they should come soon.

WION: How worrisome is the situation in Northern Israel?&nbsp;

Naor Gilon: The problem from the Israeli point of view is that we evacuated, close to 100,000 from the northern border and from Gaza, so close to 200,000 people and as long as there is a solution, Hezbollah is sitting and shooting directly at homes. They have to come to normal lives, either it has been solved diplomatically or we will use military means, to push back against Hezbollah which is threatening the houses of the people. It will be the price for everyone, especially Lebanon. We will sooner or later, have to find a solution.

Their story about inheriting wealth in Tianjin seemed dubious. To gain the nanny's trust, they showed her manipulated screenshots of alleged inheritances and a photo of a property certificate, which was later revealed to be altered. Attempts to contact the couple have failed, leaving the nanny unable to recover her losses.&nbsp;

“I gave them all my savings, but since November last year, I haven’t received my salary. They owe me and the money I borrowed from my brother. Without any income, I’m still caring for their child,” the nanny told Heilongjiang Radio and Television.&nbsp;

Many online commentators advised her to report the incident to the authorities, suspecting she may have been targeted in a scam.

“Are they even the real parents? Why not take the child with you if you’re going to claim a 400 million-yuan inheritance?” asked one online observer.

“You should report this to the police. This story has too many holes. It’s highly unlikely her ex would leave her such an inheritance unless the child was his. This smells like a scam,” said another.

One year ago, a war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and its paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in the capital city of Khartoum and the fighting has rapidly spread across the country since.&nbsp;

This was amid the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and months before the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, both of which continue to rage on, but the conflict in Sudan has mostly been overlooked and the impact is devastating.&nbsp;

In one year, more than 8.5 million Sudanese have been forced to flee their homes, which has led to one of the world’s largest displacement crises, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).&nbsp;

The war has also pushed millions into extreme hunger, triggered waves of ethnically driven killings and sexual violence in Sudan’s Darfur region, and reportedly left millions of Sudanese children in the line of fire.&nbsp;

<h2>Humanitarian situation&nbsp;</h2>

Nearly two million out of the at least 8.5 million displaced have fled across the border into neighbouring South Sudan, Chad, Central African Republic, Egypt, Uganda and Ethiopia, according to the data by the UN.&nbsp;

South Sudan is hosting most of the refugees from Sudan with around 640,000 people, and 1,800 people are still arriving every day, according to the UNHCR.&nbsp;

“Sudan has experienced the almost complete destruction of its urban middle class: architects, doctors, teachers, nurses, engineers, and students have lost everything,” said UNHCR spokesperson Olga Sarrado.&nbsp;

Speaking about the situation on the ground, Sarrado said that “access constraints, security risks and logistical challenges are hampering the humanitarian response.”&nbsp;

The UNHCR spokesperson also noted that the situation for women and children is particularly alarming as they are arriving in “remote areas with little to nothing and in desperate need of food, water, shelter and medical care.”

“Parents and children have witnessed or experienced appalling violence, making psychosocial support a priority,” said Sarrado.&nbsp;

Half of the children in Sudan are currently or have been within five kilometres of the front lines of the fighting and have been left vulnerable to “gunfire, shelling, air strikes and other violence,” said a report by the United Kingdom-based charity, Save the Children.&nbsp;

More than 10 million children have been exposed to bombings, missile strikes, and direct attacks, since the beginning of the war, according to the analysis by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project (ACLED) and the UK-based charity.&nbsp;

“Children in Sudan have suffered unimaginably – they have seen killings, massacres, bullet-littered streets, dead bodies and shelled homes while they live with the all-too-real fear that they, themselves, could be killed, injured, recruited to fight or subject to sexual violence,” said Dr Arif Noor, Save the Children’s head in Sudan.&nbsp;

Sudan, according to the UN, is facing the largest child displacement crisis in the world. One in three has lost school access and out of the 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance and support, 14 million are children.&nbsp;

Several aid agencies and their workers in Sudan have raised the alarm saying that the war-torn country is headed towards a larger-scale calamity of starvation and could see mass deaths because of it in the upcoming months.&nbsp;

Tens of thousands of people or even hundreds of thousands could die in the upcoming months due to malnutrition-related causes, said Justin Brady, head of the OCHA in Sudan.&nbsp;

“This is going to get very ugly very quickly unless we can overcome both the resource challenges and the access challenges,” Brady said.&nbsp;

He also called on the international community to ask both sides to stop fighting and raise funds for the UN humanitarian effort in the war-torn country. Sarrado also noted that the “funding remains critically low”.

However, the international community has paid little attention as the UN agency which needs some $2.7 billion this year to get food and other humanitarian aid for 24 million Sudanese people has only received $145 million, according to OCHA.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the food prices in the war-torn country have risen by 45 per cent in less than a year due to less production, stalled imports, and the movement of food being impacted by the fighting, said OCHA.&nbsp;

<h2>‘A forgotten crisis’</h2>

The “level of international neglect is shocking,” Christos Christou, president of Doctors Without Borders (MSF), in a statement.&nbsp;

According to the medical charity, only 20-30 per cent of health facilities are functioning across the country. Therefore, with most of the country’s health system collapsed there have been reports of outbreaks of diseases including measles and cholera.&nbsp;

However, with most of the international community focusing towards the Middle East, and before that on the Ukraine war, the situation in Sudan has significantly deteriorated.&nbsp;

The fighting that tore through the Sudanese capital after April 15, also spread to Darfur and to the state of Gezira state, which turned into an aid hub where many have sought refuge.&nbsp;

Outside of Khartoum, the western region of Darfur has also witnessed atrocities including killings, displacement and rape. RSF and its allies have been accused of rampant sexual violence and ethnic attacks on African tribes’ areas in the region.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, a report by the UN said that a series of attacks on the ethnic African Masalit tribe killed between 10,000 and 15,000 people in Geneina, the capital of West Darfur.&nbsp;

At least 159 cases of rape and gang rape have been reported in the past year, nearly all of them in Khartoum and Darfur. The head of the Sudanese Unit for Combating Violence Against Women, a government organisation, Sulima Sharifm, said that the figures are just the tip of the iceberg.&nbsp;

Ahmed, 50, who had fled with his wife and four children from Khartoum told Reuters about his ordeal to get out of the war-torn country.&nbsp;

The 50-year-old said RSF troops pulled them from a car as they tried to escape Wad Madani to seize their vehicle and even lost his 75-year-old mother-in-law after the arduous, three-day journey.&nbsp;

He then paid smugglers to come to Egypt. Notably, Cairo had suspended visa-free entry for women, children, and men over 50 after the war broke out and Sudanese poured into the country.&nbsp;

“Because of Al-Burhan and Hemedti, our lives were completely shattered. We lost everything we owned,” he told Reuters over the phone from Cairo.

<h2>No end in sight&nbsp;</h2>

Over the past year, there have been sporadic interventions between Sudan’s warring factions led by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the head of the RSF Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the initial months, the warring sides had agreed on brief pauses in fighting offering some respite to the citizens, but it was often short-lived after ceasefires agreed upon in Jeddah after mediations by the United States and Saudi Arabia, were repeatedly violated and the process faltered.&nbsp;

While Hemedti’s forces have overrun much of Darfur, al-Burhan has moved the government and his headquarters to the Red Sea city of Port Sudan.

“Both warring parties have committed serious violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, amounting in some cases to war crimes and other atrocity crimes,” said Human Rights Watch, in a statement.&nbsp;

The international organisation has called on countries to tackle the “shamefully low levels of humanitarian funding”.

The United States, on Sunday (Apr 14) ahead of the meeting of European diplomats in Paris to mark the first anniversary of the devastating conflict, announced that it would announce an additional $100 million in aid for the war-torn country, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock, said that Berlin would provide $260 million in humanitarian aid to Sudan, in Paris, on Monday (Apr 15).&nbsp;

“We can manage together to avoid a terrible famine catastrophe, but only if we get active together now,” Baerbock said, adding that the worst-case scenario, one million people could die of hunger this year.&nbsp;

During the conference, French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné noted that the Sudanese crisis has been pushed into the background.

“It is obvious that the series of crises - I am thinking of Gaza and Ukraine - have pushed the Sudanese crisis into the background,” Séjourné said.&nbsp;
