An Indian-origin couple found themselves in the middle of the chaos that ensued during the Sydney stabbings. Notably, a man went on a stabbing spree at a bustling Westfield Bondi Junction shopping centre in Sydney killing six.

Indian couple, Shoi Ghoshal and her husband, Debashis Chakrabarty, recounted their harrowing experience in a conversation with a Western media outlet. The duo detailed to BBC how they sought refuge in a backroom in a bid to fortify themselves with cardboard boxes alongside dozens of others.

Ghoshal also described the initial confusion within the store. She said that there were sounds of commotion leading to the realisation of a grave threat. But they thought it was a fire at the shopping hub.&nbsp;

But she recalled “people were saying someone is stabbing rampantly”. “We went into a backroom, a storeroom, and used boxes to barricade ourselves in,” she added.

As per Ghoshal, there were about 20 to 25 people who were seeking cover at the storeroom. As they huddled together, Ghoshal recounted the anguish of an elderly woman separated from her husband outside.

Amid distress, the group maintained contact with authorities. Later, they received instructions to remain calm and await rescue. They were eventually evacuated through the emergency exit. Upon their exit, they saw many police cars positioned there.

Reflecting on their ordeal, Ghoshal expressed gratitude for their safety while also pointing out at the profound impact on those who lost loved ones.

“It was just beyond horrible. It plays on your mind that you could have been one of the victims. We are grateful we are safe and our thoughts are with those who have suffered. It is terrible for their families,” she told the outlet.

The country is in shock over the incident.

Six people were killed and a nine-month-old baby&nbsp;was among several others injured when an attacker wielding a knife went on a stabbing spree at a crowded shopping centre in Sydney, Australia on Saturday (Apr 13) afternoon, till a woman police officer acted alone, confronted the accused and shot him dead, said the New South Wales police.&nbsp;

The woman cop is being hailed as a hero on social media and by the Australian prime minister.&nbsp;

Several videos of panic and confusion as well as the suspect during the stabbing attack at Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction surfaced on social media showing the horror when the attacker charged at several shoppers with a knife. 
 
Video has emerged of a man wearing shorts and a sports jersey inside the shopping centre, carrying a knife.

The cops said the identity of the suspect has not yet been established but added that he most probably acted alone and there was no continuing threat.

<h2>What we know about the incident</h2>

Emergency services were called to Westfield Bondi Junction just before 4:00 pm (local time) following reports of multiple people stabbed, said the police, in a statement. “A critical incident has commenced following the shooting of male at Bondi Junction,” it added.&nbsp;

The NSW police later confirmed that five people had been killed after a knife attack and 12 people, including a nine-month-old baby, had been stabbed and taken to several hospitals across the city.&nbsp;

A sixth stabbing victim died in hospital following the rampage bringing the total death toll to seven, including the attacker, said the police in an update.&nbsp;

NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb confirmed the death of&nbsp;four women and one man at the shopping centre and another woman who died in the hospital.

Webb said that the alleged attack was a&nbsp;40-year-old man, but the police are still waiting to formally identify him. She also said that this was not a&nbsp;terrorism incident.

The police said that the alleged attacker was in the shopping centre around 3:00 pm (local time) before he left for around 20 minutes and came back with a knife.

The man was fatally shot by an officer who was nearby, said NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke. “She (the officer) confronted the offender who had moved by this stage to level five as she continued to walk quickly behind him to catch up with him,” he said.

“He turned faced her raised a knife. She discharged a firearm and that person is now deceased,” Cooke added. He also said that early investigations suggest the man acted alone and that there is no ongoing threat.

“This all happened very, very quickly - the officer that was in the vicinity attended on her own, was guided to the location of the offender by people who were in the centre.” 
 
“She took the actions that she did saving a range of people’s lives; an inspector, a senior police officer - she was on her own. She engaged immediately on her arrival to the scene,” Cooke said about the&nbsp;officer who shot the alleged attacker.&nbsp;

An eyewitness said the woman officer tackled the situation very calmly and asked the attacker to drop his knife. However, the attacker lunged at the cop with his knife. 
 
“She was put in a situation where she had to do it. She did it so calmly. She was amazing,” Michael Dunkley, the owner of a cafe, told news.com.au. 
 
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese addressed a news conference and hailed the ‘heroism’ of first responders, police and civilians.

He went on to commend the lone woman officer who shot the attacker. 
 
“The bravery of the police officer, who entered the proceedings that were taking place - obviously very dangerous - by herself, she is certainly a hero. There is no doubt she saved lives through her action.”

<h2>‘Horrific experience’</h2>

One shopper named Adriana told state broadcaster ABC News was with her two daughters at a beauty store when they heard gunshots.&nbsp; 
 
“All of a sudden the front doors were closed and in a matter of seconds we heard some gunshots and got sent to the storage room at the back of the shop. There were about 30 or 40 people there,” she said.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, videos have flooded social media of local citizens throwing tables and chairs at the knifeman to take him down.&nbsp; 
 
A man wearing&nbsp;a white t-shirt and jeans is also being hailed as a hero on social media after a clip of him holding a&nbsp;bollard and confronting the alleged attacker on an escalator&nbsp;went viral.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Australian PM in a post on&nbsp;X and said that he had been briefed after the incident by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in Canberra.&nbsp;

NSW Premier Chris Minns, who was in Japan for a family holiday, said he was returning to the city immediately. “I am horrified to hear about the events at Bondi Junction this afternoon,” he said, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “I am making immediate arrangements to return to Sydney. I want to thank NSW Police, emergency services and first responders and the community for their bravery in the face of this shocking incident.”

Japan’s decision to upgrade one of its helicopter carriers to its first aircraft carrier warship has rattled China big time. Chinese foreign ministry in a statement has cautioned Tokyo against violating the country’s post-war pacifist constitution.

Much to China’s chagrin, Japan has upgraded the helicopter carrier named Kaga. It has raised questions in Beijing because a former ship with the same name was used by Japan to bomb Shanghai.

<h2>Japan becomes assertive</h2>

The Kaga entered service in 2017 as a helicopter carrier but now it has upgraded to host Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters. The ship will undergo the second phase of modification in 2026-27 to further cement its position as a fighter plane carrier.

But that’s not all. Japan also plans to convert Kaga’s sister ship, Izumo, into an aircraft carrier in a process expected to finish in 2027.

Both carriers, after modifications, will carry 12 fighter jets and 16 helicopters.

But here is one interesting angle. The Japanese government has ordered 42 F-35Bs for the carriers, 30 more than what the two carriers can host. This has triggered speculations and rumours about Japan’s covert plans for its navy.

Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying reiterated the pacifist clause in the Japanese constitution in response to Tokyo’s major strategic move.

Members of Ashlee Good's family have paid tribute to a 'beautiful mother, daughter, sister, partner and all round outstanding human'.

"We appreciate the well wishes and thoughts of members of the Australian public who have expressed an outpouring of love for Ashlee and our baby girl," the family said in a statement.

"We can report that after hours of surgery yesterday our baby is currently doing well. We are so grateful for the expert care and attention of the medical team at Sydney Children’s Hospital."

The family also thanked the men for getting baby Harriet the care she needed.

"To the two men who held and cared for our baby when Ashlee could not - words cannot express our gratitude".

“We are struggling to come to terms with what has occurred. We would appreciate peace and privacy while we work through this as a family.”

First-time mother Ash Good was pushing her nine-month-old daughter Harriet in a pram through Westfield at Bondi Junction, when the knifeman leant inside and stabbed the baby girl. Then he turned his fury on her, Australian Telegraph reported.

Two men, who are brothers, heard Good's screams for help&nbsp;before she ran to them, holding her injured baby out in front.

"She handed us the baby and said 'please help, help'," one of the men said.

"She was bleeding from her head, her face … the baby was bleeding," he said.
