There are two things happening. On the ground, left and centrist supporters have taken to the streets to protest against the far-right. The hope, it appears, is to show how dangerous it would be if a far-right government takes over and&nbsp;rally support for alternative outcomes.

This, they hope, would make more voters to turn up in the second round, and avert a tectonic shift of French politics towards the right.

Macron could forge electorial tie-ups with other parties to help cobble up an anti-far-right coalition.

Here's how the numbers stack up:

Out of the 577 seats, those where the leading candidate did not poll more than 50% of votes will have to go into second round on Sunday, as per the election rules of France. The two candidates who got the highest votes in such constituencies, plus anyone who got at least 12.5% of registered votes will go into the second round.

Even if that happens, will the voters change their voting pattern in favour of the candidate who, in the first round, was an opponent of their party candidate?

The left-green NFP alliance includes four parties. They have agreed in principle to withdraw the NFP candidates from seats where RN is in first place or NFP candidate is third.

But will Macron return the favour in cases where his party/bloc candidates are third?

Macron thinks the NFP consists of 'extreme' left parties and is yet to be flexible on this. While the Prime Minister Gabriel Attal is in favour of third-placed candidates from Macron's coalition withdrawing from the race, neither the president nor the candidates have made firm commitments to this effect at the time of writing this.

While an Ipsos poll said 87% NFP voters are ready to vote for &nbsp;other candidates in order to keep out RN, only 62% of Together&nbsp;coalition voters are ready to do the same.

Odoxa's polls found that only 41% were willing to block RN. Those willing to block NPF are highest at 47% while 44% are ready to block Together from winning.

So in the coming days, Macron will have to negotiate his way through individual party leaders - including the ones he disparaged during campaign- and create 'deals' on individual constituencies.

It all depends on how much he, and the others like Leftist firebrand leaders&nbsp;Jean-Luc Mélenchon in NFP- are willing to play ball.

According to the customs agency, the chemicals seized could be used to make over 63 million MDMA pills, also known as ecstasy.

Lab tests showed that the powder, which was being carried as a polyester coating chemical, was in fact PMK, which is used for making ecstasy.

The haul happened after Italian authorities contacted Dutch police.

The seized goods included dozens of kilogrammes of PMK, ketamine and hashish, news agency AFP reported.

China's involvement in the global drug trade is well-known, mainly as a source of precursor material and as part of money laundering operations.

Amid its opioid crisis, the US had blamed China for the trafficking of fentanyl.

It came a day after another wildfire had erupted in the same area, sparking evacuation orders but was later successfully controlled.&nbsp;

North of Athens, another blaze ignited in the suburb of Stamata and authorities&nbsp;sent emergency messages for inhabitants to evacuate.

Fire brigade spokesman Vasileios Vathrakogiannis said it was "the most difficult day of the year so far for the Fire Brigade."

<h2>Island fires</h2>

A fire also broke out Sunday in an industrial zone in Ritsona, near the island of Evia.&nbsp;

Black smoke has filled the sky above Ritsona after the fire started in a recycling factory, burning various flammable materials that were in the grounds around it, including tyres and mattresses.&nbsp;

Firefighters are positioned along the old Ritsona national road and are fighting to prevent the flames from spreading beyond the recycling plant to other factories in the area.

The fire is also near a refugee centre, but the Athens News Agency reported that this was not believed to be in danger.

Separately, a large wildfire broke out on Serifos island on Saturday afternoon, but was also brought under control by firefighters early Sunday.

"All of southwestern Serifos has burned. We are talking about an area where the fire stopped at the sea," Serifos mayor Konstantinos Revintis told MEGA TV.&nbsp;

The fire caused damage to houses, cottages, warehouses and chapels, according to the mayor.

At least nine people were injured in an acid attack at a cafe in Germany's Bochum, according to media reports early Monday (July 1). A man entered the cafe at around 3.25 pm local time Sunday and poured an acidic liquid over a guest sitting at a table in the outdoor area, the police said. The victim was seriously injured, the police added. A report by The Standard said that a waitress and a woman sitting next to the victim were also injured. Four police officers and two firefighters also sustained injuries as they came into contact with the liquid after being called to the scene. Attacker arrested, probe launched The attacker initially fled the scene but was arrested shortly afterwards. The police said that the motive of the attack was unclear, and an investigation had been launched. Efforts were also on to identify the substance used in the attack.
