Chinese President Xi Jinping said Thursday Beijing and Washington must find a way to "get along" in a message to US president-elect Donald Trump, state media reported.

Trump's crushing presidential victory ushers in a new era of uncertainty in the United States and the world, and heralds a possible shift in US-China relations, frayed in recent years by tensions over everything from trade to the status of self-ruled Taiwan.

In his first message to Trump since the former president secured a second term, Xi said "history has shown that China and the United States benefit from cooperation and suffer from confrontation", state broadcaster CCTV said.

"A stable, healthy and sustainable China-US relationship is in the common interest of both countries and is in line with the expectations of the international community," Xi said.

He called for Washington and Beijing to "strengthen dialogue and communication" and "properly manage differences".

The two countries must "find a correct way... to get along in this new era, to benefit both countries and the world", Xi said.

Chinese Vice President Han Zheng also sent a message to vice president-elect JD Vance, CCTV said.

Both Republican Trump and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris had pledged to get tougher on Beijing.

But Trump upped the ante, vowing to slap 60 percent tariffs on all Chinese goods entering the United States.

The president-elect aims to "restore some level of balance in the US-China trade", Yun Sun, a Senior Fellow at the Stimson Center, told AFP.

"Given his arts of 'maximum pressure' before striking a deal, I do expect him to impose the tariff," she added.

Nick Wood, Head of Execution at MillTechFX and Millennium Global notes that currency moves on Wednesday have been orderly, with currency pairs in general seeing volumes around 25 per cent to 30 per cent above usual.

That may have been helped by investors holding relatively light positions heading into the election.

“It seems like elements of the market were actually kind of running quite light in terms of risk, so therefore they can be a little bit more patient in terms of entering positions as opposed to feeling like you're the wrong side of something and having to exit a position at a speed,” he said.

A complicating factor for the dollar outlook longer term, meanwhile, could be that Trump has stated a preference for a weak US currency.

“Both this year, but also during his previous stay at the White House, he had essentially challenged the longstanding strong dollar mantra, because he prefers a weaker currency to help with exports and American economic activity," said Tzabouras.

"And he had also called for lower interest rates, so this could actually pose headwinds for the dollar in the long run as these policies begin to take shape.”

The dollar index was last up 1.72 percent at 105.17 and reached 105.44, the highest since July 3. The euro dropped 1.91 per cent to $1.0720 and got as low as $1.0683, the lowest since June 27.

The greenback rose 1.60 per cent to 154.02 Japanese yen and reached 154.48, the highest since July 30.

The Japanese yen could now approach levels that prompted officials to intervene and shore up the currency earlier this year.

Japan's chief cabinet secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said on Wednesday that the government intended to closely watch moves on the foreign exchange market, including speculative moves, with a higher sense of urgency.

Trump has also expressed favorable views on cryptocurrencies, which helped to lift bitcoin to a record high of $75,389. It was last up 7.3% at $74,181.

The Fed is expected to cut rates by 25 basis points at the conclusion of its two-day meeting on Thursday and investors will also watch for any new clues on whether the U.S. central bank could pause cuts in December.

A much stronger than expected jobs report for September led investors to pare back expectations on how many times the Fed is likely to cut rates. At the time of writing this, AP has called the Senate race in California for Democratic Adam Schiff, who won more than 57 per cent of the votes.

As reported by sources to Reuters, Harris is scheduled to address the nation around 4:00 PM&nbsp;EST (21:00 GMT). Additionally, she is expected to phone Trump to formally concede, according to two of her aides who spoke with NBC News. A White House official told the same network that President Joe Biden also plans to call Trump and make a public statement regarding the election outcome.

Harris became the Democratic nominee after President Joe Biden exited the race in July, following a weak showing against Trump in a presidential debate held on June 27.

Iranian&nbsp;President&nbsp;Masoud Pezeshkian said the result of the U.S. election did not matter to his country, state media reported on Thursday, amid heightened tensions with Washington over its support for Iran's arch-enemy, Israel.

Donald Trump's return to the White House following his election victory this week could mean tougher enforcement of U.S. oil sanctions against Iran, which he initiated in 2018 after quitting a nuclear pact between Tehran and global powers.

The Biden administration has strongly supported Israel in its wars against the Iran-backed Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as Israeli actions against Iran itself.

Some analysts believe Trump will give Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a greater free hand in dealing with Iran.

"To us it does not matter at all who has won the American election, because our country and system relies on its inner strength and a great and honourable nation," Pezeshkian said late on Wednesday, quoted by the state news agency IRNA.

It was his first comment on Trump's election victory.

It was not immediately clear if Pezeshkian was also referring to the United States, with which Iran does not have diplomatic relations. Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in all matters of state, has banned holding any direct talks with the United States.

An&nbsp;Iranian&nbsp;government spokesperson earlier played down the importance of the U.S. election, while a Revolutionary Guards commander voiced readiness for confrontation.

The&nbsp;Iranian&nbsp;leaders' main concern is the potential for Trump to empower Netanyahu to strike Iran's nuclear sites, conduct assassinations, and reimpose his "maximum pressure" policy through heightened sanctions on the country's oil industry.

Some, however, suspect Trump will be cautious about the possibility of war.

In 2018, the then-Trump administration exited Iran's 2015 nuclear pact with six world powers and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to violate the pact's nuclear limits.

The raid in which the UN peacekeepers were wounded struck near an army checkpoint in south Lebanon's main city Sidon.

"The Israeli enemy targeted a car while it was passing through the Awali checkpoint," the army said in a statement.

Three civilians in the car were killed, the military said, and three soldiers at the checkpoint were wounded along with five members of the Malaysian contingent of the UN peacekeeping force, UNIFIL.

"Five peacekeepers were lightly injured and treated by the Lebanese Red Cross on the spot," UNIFIL said in a statement, urging all sides to avoid endangering peacekeepers or civilians.

The Israeli military told AFP it was looking into the reports.

Israel launched raids across the southern suburbs of Beirut overnight, with one hitting an area near the airport.

Taxi driver Abu Elie, who was at the airport when the strikes hit, told AFP "The entire car park shook".&nbsp;

"People were carrying their suitcases on their shoulders and running," he said.

Officials told AFP the raid had caused minor damage but the terminal building was safe and flights were running as normal.

<h2>'Warm and cordial'</h2>

In the lead-up to Tuesday's US presidential election, some in Lebanon had been hopeful that new leadership might bring them a reprieve.

But Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem said in a speech broadcast on Wednesday that the vote –&nbsp;won by Donald Trump –&nbsp;would have no bearing on the war.

He warned that Hezbollah had tens of thousands of trained militants ready to fight and that nowhere in Israel was "off-limits".

Israel's airports authority said Wednesday that operations at its main airport near commercial hub Tel Aviv were not affected after Hezbollah said it fired missiles at a military base nearby.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has vowed to keep fighting Hamas and Hezbollah until victory, spoke to Trump on Wednesday.

Netanyahu's office said the conversation was "warm and cordial" and he had congratulated Trump on his victory.

"The two also discussed the Iranian threat," his office said.

Shortly afterward, Israel's defence ministry said it had signed a $5.2 billion agreement with Boeing to purchase 25 "next generation" F-15 fighter jets, which would be financed by US military aid.

In Lebanon, the strikes in Beirut's southern suburbs were so intense many residents of the city were unable to sleep.

"Death has become a matter of luck. We can either die or survive," said Ramzi Zaiter, a resident of south Beirut.

<h2>'Nothing left'&nbsp;</h2>

Since September 23, more than 2,600 people have been killed in Israeli strikes on Lebanon, according to Health Minister Firass Abiad.

Iran, which arms and finances Hezbollah, also dismissed the impact of the US vote.

"It makes no difference to us who won the US election," President Masoud Pezeshkian was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.

Iran and the United States have been adversaries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which overthrew the Western-backed shah, but tensions soared during Trump's first term from 2017 to 2021.

In Gaza, ravaged by 13 months of war since the deadliest attack in Israeli history, people were desperate for a solution.

"We were displaced, killed... there's nothing left for us, we want peace," said Mamduh al-Jadba.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, on a visit to Jerusalem, said Trump's victory could yet provide a "window" for peace because the US president-elect had a "wish to see the end of the Middle East's endless wars".

Hamas's attack on Israel resulted in 1,206 deaths, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures.

Israel's retaliatory campaign has killed 43,469 people in Gaza, a majority of them civilians, according to figures from the Hamas-run territory's health ministry that the United Nations considers reliable.

In Israel, recent surveys have shown that a majority of people were hoping to see Trump return to the White House.

"Now we just need him to give us weapons," said fruit vendor Yossi Mizrachi, 51, adding he believed Trump would be able to "bring an end to the war".

“Yesterday, I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory, and I assured him that I direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. That’s what the American people deserve,” Biden said.

"You cannot love your country only when you win," he added.

“Something to hope we can do, no matter who you voted for, is see each other not as adversaries, but as fellow Americans. Bring down the temperature.&nbsp;

“I also hope we can lay to rest the question about the integrity of the American electoral system. It is honest, it is fair, and it is transparent, and it can be trusted, win or lose,” said the US president.&nbsp;
