A Qantas flight returned minutes after taking off from Sydney Airport due to an engine failure. As it landed, a fire burnt through grassland next to a runway which was reportedly sparked by the airplane.

After flight QF520 took off before 1 pm on Friday, passengers heard a loud bang which turned out to be the sound of an engine exploding. Passenger ﻿Georgina Lewis told 9News that "one of the engines appeared to have gone."

The pilot then came up to the passengers and them that there was a "problem with a right-hand engine on take-off."&nbsp;

The plane was a Boeing 737 and was flying to Brisbane with 174 passengers onboard.

According to Fire and Rescue NSW, as the plane's engine failed and blasted, the grassfire next to the runway caught fire. Meanwhile, Sydney Airport did not confirm whether the two incidents were linked. A spokesperson for the airport said it is investigating if the fire and engine malfunction are linked.

The spokesperson said, "Earlier today a Brisbane-bound flight made an emergency return to Sydney Airport, landing safely just after 1 pm."

"This departure of aircraft coincided with a grass fire along the eastern side of the airport's parallel runway, which was brought under control by teams from the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Service."

Qantas Chief Pilot Captain Richard Tobiano also talked about the incident and said that their pilots are trained to handle such situations. He added that "after circling for a short period of time, the aircraft landed safely at Sydney Airport" after the appropriate procedures were conducted.

He also said that they would reach out to the passengers and provide support as they understandably had a "distressing experience".&nbsp;

California’s Democratic Governor and Donald Trump's fierce critic&nbsp;Gavin Newsom called on Thursday (Nov 7) for a special session ahead of Trump's second term in the White House to safeguard America's progressive policies.&nbsp;

"The freedoms we hold dear in California are under attack, and we won't sit idle," Newsom&nbsp;reportedly said in a statement.&nbsp;

The move has reignited California's resistance against conservative policies a day after the Republicans swept the 2024 presidential election defeating Vice President Kamala Harris.&nbsp;

Newsom urged lawmakers to prepare to fight "unlawful" federal policies on issues including abortion, immigration and climate change.

Liberal bulwark California led multiple legal battles against the White House during the first Trump presidency, on matters from auto emission limits to border wall construction, and&nbsp;Newsom&nbsp;called on the nation's most populous state to reprise that role ahead of the Republican's return to power.

"California has faced this challenge before, and we know how to respond. We are prepared to fight in the courts, and we will do everything necessary to ensure Californians have the support and resources they need to thrive."

Specifically, the extraordinary session starting on December 2 will discuss boosting funding for legal action for California's justice department and other agencies to challenge the incoming Trump administration's policies in court.

Newsom&nbsp;said California lawyers have been preparing these measures "for more than a year" by readying arguments and evidence to challenge any "unconstitutional and unlawful federal policies" pursued by the Trump White House.&nbsp;

During Trump's first term, California launched dozens of lawsuits against the federal administration, often joining forces with other states, in particular fellow liberal West Coast states Oregon and Washington.

Washington Governor-elect Bob Ferguson was expected to announce similar pre-emptive measures at a press conference later Thursday.

The calls to action follow an election in which Republicans took not just the White House, but won the popular vote, secured control of the Senate and appeared likely to hold onto a majority in the House of Representatives.

Trump campaigned on pledges including mass deportation of illegal immigrants, and a shift from renewable energy toward the US oil sector.

Abortion rights advocates fear a Republican-controlled Congress enacting sweeping national restrictions or an outright ban, while Trump has publicly vowed to take revenge on his political enemies.

Newsom's special session will focus on protecting civil rights, reproductive freedom, climate action, and immigrant families, according to a statement.

It will be "the first of several actions" to shore up California's defences against the incoming administration, a statement said.

"California is ready to fight," wrote&nbsp;Newsom, on social media.&nbsp;

"Whether it be our fundamental civil rights, reproductive freedom, or climate action -- we refuse to turn back the clock and allow our values and laws to be attacked," he said.

In fact, Florida along with five other states and the District of Columbia (Washington DC) gave Trump more votes than he got in 2016.&nbsp;
