Kenya rocked by opposition protests over tax hike

The East African nation of Kenya was rocked by anti-government protests on the 7th of July. Thousands of Kenyans took to the streets on Friday, answering an opposition call to demonstrate over a raft of controversial tax hikes. Bonfires were lit and some major roads were blockaded by protesters. Tear gas canisters were fired upon them to break up the protests. 3 people lost their lives in these protests against tax hike. President William Ruto won the closely-contested August 2022 elections on the promise of improving the economic fortunes. He is now accused of rowing back on those very promises. In a country already suffering economic hardship & soaring prices for essential commodities, how fair is it to implement new taxes? Mohammed Saleh explores.
