Europe Spending Billions On Defence But Still Facing Military Delays

European nations are ramping up defence spending to historic levels, but experts say the continent’s military production and procurement systems are struggling to keep pace.
After decades of reduced military investment following the Cold War, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 forced Europe to rapidly rebuild its defence capabilities. Germany has even lifted borrowing limits to expand military spending, while NATO members collectively spent hundreds of billions on defence last year.
However, analysts warn that despite rising budgets, structural issues in Europe’s defence industry are causing delays in production, procurement, and readiness — raising questions about how quickly the continent can truly rearm.
