<p>Republican Senator Josh Hawley also wrote to Yuan asking him to "pick a side" between the United States and China.</p>

<p>The three politicians have previously expressed concerns about TikTok's owner, Chinese firm ByteDance, which is being scrutinized by U.S. regulators over the personal data the short video app handles.</p>

<p>"We appreciate the outreach we have received from various elected officials and look forward to engaging with them," a Zoom spokesman said.</p>

<p>China's internet watchdog, the Cyberspace Administration of China, did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment from Reuters. Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying told reporters on Friday that she was not aware of the details.</p>

<p>Wang Dan, a U.-based dissident and exiled student leader of the crushed 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, had his Zoom account suspended. He said he was shocked to hear Zoom acknowledge it had interrupted meetings he was participating in. His June 3 event with about 200 participants was deactivated midstream, he said.</p>

<p>"Zoom complied with China's request, preventing us from going about our lives smoothly," Wang said in an email to Reuters. "It cannot get away with just a statement. We shall continue to use legal means and public opinion to ask Zoom to take responsibility for its mistake."</p>

<p>The company said it is now developing technology to enable it to remove or block participants based on geography, allowing it to comply with requests from local authorities. It said it would publish an updated global policy on June 30.</p>

<p>US-based Humanitarian China founder Zhou Fengsuo said he welcomed Zoom's acknowledgement of the suspensions but told Reuters it was unacceptable for the company "to separate China users from the rest of the world."</p>

<p>The company's China links have been called into question before.</p>

<p>Toronto-based internet watchdog Citizen Lab said in April it had found evidence some calls made in North America, as well as the encryption keys used to secure those calls, were routed through China. Zoom said it had mistakenly allowed Chinese data centres to accept calls.</p>

<p>Video conferencing provider Zoom plans to strengthen encryption of video calls hosted by paying clients and institutions such as schools, but not by users of its free consumer accounts, a company official said on Friday.</p>

<p>The company, whose business has boomed with the coronavirus pandemic, discussed the move on a call with civil liberties groups and child-sex abuse fighters on Thursday, and Zoom security consultant Alex Stamos confirmed it on Friday.</p>

<p>In an interview, Stamos said the plan was subject to change and it was not yet clear which, if any, nonprofits or other users, such as political dissidents, might qualify for accounts allowing more secure video meetings.</p>

<p>He added that a combination of technological, safety and business factors went into the plan, which drew mixed reactions from privacy advocates.</p>

<p>Zoom has attracted millions of free and paying customers amid the pandemic, in part because users could join a meeting - something that now happens 300 million times a day - without registering.</p>

<p>But that has allowed opportunities for troublemakers to slip into meetings, sometimes after pretending to be invitees.<br />
Gennie Gebhart, a researcher with the Electronic Frontier Foundation who was on Thursday’s call, said she hoped Zoom would change course and offer protected video more widely.</p>

<p>But Jon Callas, a technology fellow of the American Civil Liberties Union, said the strategy seemed a reasonable compromise.</p>

<p>Safety experts and law enforcement have warned that sexual predators and other criminals are increasingly using encrypted communications to avoid detection.</p>

<p>"Those of us who are doing secure communication believe we need to do things about the real horrible stuff," said Callas, who previously sold paid encryption services.</p>

<p>"Charging money for end-to-end encryption is a way to get rid of the riff-raff," including spammers and other malicious users who take advantage of free services.</p>

<p>Zoom hired Stamos and other experts after a series of security failures led some institutions to ban its use. Last week Zoom released a technical paper on its encryption plans, without saying how widely they would reach.</p>

<p>"At the same time that Zoom is trying to improve security, they are also significantly upgrading their trust and safety," said Stamos, a former chief security officer at Facebook.</p>

<p>"The CEO is looking at different arguments. The current plan is paid customers plus enterprise accounts where the company knows who they are."</p>

<p>Full encryption for every meeting would leave Zoom’s trust and safety team unable to add itself as a participant in gatherings to tackle abuse in real time, Stamos added.</p>

<p>An end-to-end model, which means no one but the participants and their devices can see and hear what is happening, would also have to exclude people who call in from a telephone line.</p>

<p>From a business perspective, it is hard to earn money when offering a sophisticated and expensive encryption service for free. Facebook is planning to fully encrypt Messenger, but it earns enormous sums from its other services.</p>

<p>Other providers of encrypted communication either charge business users or act as nonprofits, such as the makers of Signal.</p>

<p>Zoom is also dealing with regulators such as the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which is looking into its previous claims about encryption that have been criticized as exaggerated or false, said Stamos and another person familiar with the matter.</p>

<p>After his arrest, Scully-Powers told police he stabbed his father approximately 15 times in the back, neck and torso, switching knives because the blades were bending, according to prosecutors.</p>

<p>"This is a shocking and disturbing case," Suffolk District Attorney Timothy Sini said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"By the defendant's own admissions, he brutally stabbed his own father repeatedly until he was certain he was dead."</p>

<p>When officers arrived at the scene, Scully-Powers jumped from a second-story window, police said, attempting to flee on foot.</p>

<p>He ran to a nearby deli and allegedly began pouring Dr. Pepper soda on himself in a bid to wash off the blood.</p>

<p>Zoom's popularity has risen amid lockdown that is put in place in most countries to check COVID-19 spread, but widespread concerns over privacy and security still continue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Singapore's education ministry is probing the "very serious incidents" and teachers have suspended the use of the app till the security issues are settled, aid Aaron Loh, from the ministry's educational technology division.</p>

<p>"We are already working with Zoom to enhance its security settings and make these security measures clear and easy to follow," Loh said in a statement.</p>

<p>However, he added that home-based teaching would continue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Zoom, in a statement, said that it "strongly condemns" such behaviour, adding it was "committed to providing educators with the tools and resources they need on a safe and secure platform".</p>

<p>Taiwan would be the first government formally advising against the use of Zoom, although some U.S. schools districts are looking at putting limits on its use after an FBI warning last month.</p>

<p>Zoom's daily users ballooned to more than 200 million in March from a previous maximum total of 10 million, the video conferencing app's boss Eric Yuan said on Wednesday, as it fought to dispel concerns over privacy and "Zoombombing".</p>

<p>The use of Zoom and other digital communications have soared with political parties, corporate offices, school districts, organizations and millions across the world working from home after lockdowns were enforced to slow the spread of the coronavirus.</p>

<p>"To put this growth in context, as of the end of December last year, the maximum number of daily meeting participants, both free and paid, conducted on Zoom was approximately 10 million," founder and Chief Executive Officer Eric Yuan wrote in a letter to Zoom users on Wednesday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yuan said that Zoom usage has taken off over the last few weeks, with more than 90,000 schools across 20 countries, using its video conferencing services to conduct classes remotely.</p>

<p>However, the huge influx of users on its platform has raised a lot of issues for the company - mainly privacy.</p>

<p>"We recognize that we have fallen short of the community's – and our own – privacy and security expectations," Yuan said. "For that, I am deeply sorry."</p>

<p>On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Boston office issued a warning about Zoom, telling users not to make meetings on the site public or share links widely after it received two reports of unidentified individuals invading school sessions, a phenomenon known as "zoombombing."</p>

<p>A couple of days later, billionaire Elon Musk's rocket company SpaceX banned its employees from using the Zoom app in a memo seen by Reuters, saying the app had "significant privacy and security concerns."</p>

<p>Yuan acknowledged the problems in his letter saying, "over the next 90 days, we are committed to dedicating the resources needed to better identify, address, and fix issues proactively."</p>

Yuan said that Zoom usage has taken off over the last few weeks, with more than 90,000 schools across 20 countries, using its video conferencing services to conduct classes remotely. However, the huge influx of users on its platform has raised a lot of issues for the company - mainly privacy. "We recognize that we have fallen short of the community's – and our own – privacy and security expectations," Yuan said. "For that, I am deeply sorry." On Monday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Boston office issued a warning about Zoom, telling users not to make meetings on the site public or share links widely after it received two reports of unidentified individuals invading school sessions, a phenomenon known as "zoombombing." A couple of days later, billionaire Elon Musk's rocket company SpaceX banned its employees from using the Zoom app in a memo seen by Reuters, saying the app had "significant privacy and security concerns." Yuan acknowledged the problems in his letter saying, "over the next 90 days, we are committed to dedicating the resources needed to better identify, address, and fix issues proactively." Microsoft Corp's business-focused Teams was used by 1.56 million mobile users on Monday, while Slack had less than 500,000 mobile users.
