A US lead strike hit a Houthi military site on a mountain overlooking Yemen's capital Sana'a. The US and Britain have carried out a series of strikes against Houthi targets in response to the attacks on shipping us Central Command or Centcom.

Yemen's 8-year-long conflict and recent escalations have increased the demand for fire-arms. In the last five years, arms markets have popped up across different parts of the country, as dealers seek to capitalise on the rising demand.

Why are Yemenis stocking on weapons?

A missile fired at a merchant vessel in the Red Sea by Yemen's Houthi rebel group did not cause any damage to the ship, said the marine security monitors on Friday (March 15) as the Houthis threaten to expand their campaign that has caused disruptions in the global trade.

The Royal Navy's UK Marine Trade Operations and security firm Ambrey had earlier reported that the vessel was damaged after being struck west of the rebel-held Yemeni port of Hodeida in the early hours of Friday.

However, after a daylight inspection, it turned out that the ship had not been impacted by the projectile attack and had also not sustained any damage.

Ambrey stated that the "vessel was listed as Israel-affiliated but had changed ownership in February 2024".

It further added that the merchant ship was headed from Singapore to the Suez Canal with armed guards onboard.

The same tanker, the previous day, was almost struck by a missile southeast of Yemen's port of Aden, said Ambrey.

UKMTO said that when the incident was first reported, the ship was 76 nautical miles (140 km) west of the port of Hodeidah, while a second vessel was 50 nautical miles southwest when it reported missiles flying overhead and exploding in the distance.

"The Master reported two missiles flying over the vessel and heard two loud blasts in the distance. The vessel reported no damage and the crew are reported safe. The vessel is proceeding to its next port of call," UKMTO said in an advisory note.&nbsp;

The reports have mentioned that the Iran-backed rebel group is planning to begin manufacturing the missiles for use against targets in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as Israel.&nbsp;

The reports did not provide evidence for the claims.&nbsp;

Britain's defence minister says warship downed two Houthi drones

In the Gulf of Aden, a missile strike carried out by Yemen's Houthi rebels on the Barbados-flagged bulk carrier True Confidence resulted in the tragic death of two crew members, prompting survivors to abandon the vessel on Wednesday (March 6).

This marks the first fatal incident in the Houthi campaign, which escalated due to Israel's conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. The attack adds to the ongoing disruptions on a vital maritime route connecting Asia and the Middle East to Europe.

The Houthi attacks, initiated in November, persist despite the U.S. airstrike campaign launched in January.

The True Confidence was reportedly hailed by individuals claiming to be the Yemeni military before the attack, and the Houthis, suspected of attempting vessel seizures, have been communicating with ships in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden over the radio.

Two U.S. officials, speaking anonymously, confirmed that the anti-ship ballistic missile attack resulted in two deaths and six injuries among the crew.

The Liberian-owned ship's full extent of damage is yet unclear, but the crew abandoned the vessel, deploying lifeboats.

The Houthis have not immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, and the motive for targeting the True Confidence remains unclear, although it was previously owned by Oaktree Capital Management, a Los Angeles-based fund specializing in vessel financing. Oaktree has declined to comment on the matter.

Since November, the rebels have consistently targeted vessels in the Red Sea and neighbouring waters due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Among these ships are those carrying cargo destined for Iran, the primary supporter of the Houthis, as well as an aid ship later intended for territory under Houthi control.

Despite over a month and a half of airstrikes led by the U.S., the Houthi rebels have maintained their ability to carry out significant attacks.

These incidents include the recent assault on a fertiliser-laden cargo ship, the Rubymar, which ultimately sank on Saturday after drifting for several days, and the destruction of an American drone valued at tens of millions of dollars.

On Tuesday (March 6), a distinct Houthi assault reportedly aimed at the USS Carney, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer actively engaged in the American campaign against the rebels.

The attack on the Carney by the Houthis on Tuesday utilised bomb-laden drones and an anti-ship ballistic missile, as confirmed by the US&nbsp;military's Central Command.

Houthi attack leaves 2 dead, 6 injured on commercial ship near Yemen, in first Red Sea casualties

A Houthi missile attack killed three seafarers on a Red Sea merchant ship on Wednesday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said, the first fatalities reported since the Iran-aligned Yemeni group began strikes against shipping in one of the world's busiest trade lanes. The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, which set the Greek-owned, Barbados-flagged ship True Confidence ablaze around 50 nautical miles off the coast of Yemen's port of Aden.

Red Sea Crisis: 3 killed in Yemen Rebels' first fatal attack on Red Sea shipping

UK-owned Rubymar cargo ship, which was damaged in an attack by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebel group in February, has reportedly sunk in the Red Sea, Yemen's government said on Saturday (March 2).

The government further warned of an "environmental catastrophe" from the vessel's cargo of fertilizer.

"The MV Rubymar sank last night, coinciding with weather factors and strong winds at sea," said a crisis cell of Yemen's internationally recognised government in charge of the case.

Roy Khoury, chief executive of the ship's operator Blue Fleet, according to news agency AFP stated that he was unaware of the sinking.

"We have nobody on board to check if it's true or not," he said.

A Yemeni government team on Monday (Feb 26) had visited the Rubymar and said that the vessel was partially submerged. A government statement on Saturday also said that the ship had sunk in the southern Red Sea on Friday night.

<h2>'Environmental catastrophe'</h2>

Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, foreign minister in Yemen's Aden-based government, which is backed by Saudi Arabia, said in a post on X: "The sinking of the Rubymar is an environmental catastrophe that Yemen and the region have never experienced before.

"It is a new tragedy for our country and our people. Every day we pay the price for the adventures of the Houthi militia ..."

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency on Saturday reported a ship sinking, however, did not identify it.

The ship was hit by missiles fired by the Houthis on Feb 18 and the crew onboard was immediately evacuated.

The US military had previously said that the Rubymar was loaded with over 41,000 tons of fertiliser at the time it was attacked, causing an 18-mile (29km) oil slick.

“The Houthis continue to demonstrate a disregard for the regional impact of their indiscriminate attacks, threatening the fishing industry, coastal communities, and imports of food supplies,” United States Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a statement, warning that the ship’s cargo “could spill into the Red Sea and worsen this environmental disaster.”

Earlier, the Yemen's Iran-backed rebel group had vowed to prevent the rescue of the leaking ship until people in the war-torn Gaza Strip were provided with access to food, water, and medicine.

“The sinking British ship might be hauled in return for delivering aid vehicles to Gaza,” Al-Houthi said on X. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The ship was hit by missiles fired by the Houthis on Feb 18 and the crew onboard was immediately evacuated. Rubymar: UK cargo ship attacked by Houthis sinks in Red Sea, raising environmental concerns

Submarine internet cables have been “cut” in the Red Sea, causing “significant” disruption to communications networks in the Middle East, said Hong Kong telecoms company HGC Global Communications. Cables belonging to four major operators have been cut, which might impact internet traffic in India, Pakistan, and parts of East Africa as well. HGC Global claims at least 25 per cent of the traffic has been impacted and operators were now rerouting traffic to keep disruptions to a minimum and “extending assistance to affected businesses".

The company said it was “extremely rare” to have four cables damaged simultaneously.

It must be noted that there are more than 15 submarine internet cables in the Red Sea, a region witnessing massive shipping disruption due to attacks by Yemen-based Houthi rebels in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

<h2>Cause of the cuts</h2>

None of the operators have yet disclosed the reason behind the cuts. Yemen also denied its role in the suspected sabotage, saying it was “keen to keep all telecom submarine cables…away from any possible risks.”

However, the West-backed Yemeni government in previous weeks had warned that Houthi rebels might seek to disrupt these cables to show support for Hamas and force the world to press Israel to stop attacks in Gaza.

Yemeni rebel leader Abdel Malek al-Houthi denied the allegations. “We have no intention of targeting sea cables providing internet to countries in the region,” he said.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebel group says it will continue attacking British ships after Rubymar sinks

Yemen's Houthis announced, on the 22nd of February, that they are banning vessels linked to Israel, the United States and United Kingdom in the Red sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Arabian Sea. To this effect, formal notices of the ban were sent by the Houthi's Humanitarian Operations coordination centre to shipping insurers and firms operating in the region. In addition to this, they also pledged to use 'Submarine drones' against US ships, continuing and further escalating their attacks amid the Israel-Hamas war. On the 19th of February, an American MQ-9 reaper drone crashed off the coast of Yemen after being struck by a surface-to-air missile fired by the Houthis. It was the second instance of a MQ-9 Reaper being shot down by the Houthis since the Israel-Hamas war erupted on the 7th of October last year. How potent is the threat posed by the Houthis and who is supplying Houthis with such sophisticated weaponry?

US conducts strikes in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen, targets underwater vessel

Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) troops have been working on the ground in Yemen along with Houthi rebels to help them target Western and Israeli military and commercial assets,&nbsp;claimed a US Navy official, while speaking on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” programme.

US Navy Vice Admiral Brad Cooper added that Iranian troops have been assisting the Houthis, which has led to an increase in the attacks on US military targets in the region as well as the shipping vessels in the Red Sea.&nbsp;

The comments were made at a time when US forces have stepped up counter-measures amid fears of an escalation in the Israel-Hamas war.

Speaking to&nbsp;“60 Minutes” correspondent Norah O’Donnell, Cooper claimed that the IRGC members&nbsp;have been present on the ground in Yemen “serving side-by-side” with the Houthis as well as providing them with "advice and target information."

Speaking about the steps taken by the US forces to counter that partnership, Cooper said that “will obviously end up being a policy decision."

"Our role at this point is to simply be ready and continue to be aggressive in exercising our right to self-defence," he added.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, the elite paramilitary group that directly reports to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, has given assistance to militant groups across the entire Middle East, as per the US State Department.

The state department has designated the Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

Last month, the Houthis were also redesignated as a global terrorist group by the US after there was an increase in attacks on US targets and shipping vessels, which have led to severe disruptions in trade and also threatened to bring more instability in the region.

Iran’s revolutionary guard assisting Houthis on the ground in Yemen, claims US official

Yemen's Houthi rebels said they fired missiles at a "British ship" passing though the Gulf of Aden on Thursday, after two maritime security agencies reported an explosion near a vessel in the area. Watch in for more details!

Yemen rebels claim strike on 'British ship' off Aden

A missile on Monday (Feb 12) reportedly hit a vessel off Yemen's southern coast at the time the ship was transiting the strategic Bab al-Mandeb strait, said&nbsp;security agencies.

The incident took place before 0400 local time (0100 GMT) in the area where Yemen's Houthi rebel group, in recent months, has launched repeated attacks targeting Red Sea shipping, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency said in its report.

"The crew are reported safe and the vessel is proceeding to the next port of call," UKMTO said.&nbsp;

Another security organisation, Ambrey, said that the Marshall Islands-flagged, Greece-owned bulk carrier "was targeted by missiles in two separate incidents" within 20 minutes and "was reportedly hit and sustained physical damage on the starboard side".&nbsp;

According to Ambrey, the vessel had a private armed security team on board.

The Iran-backed Houthis have been launching targetted missile strikes at the Red Sea shipping vessels for months which the group says are in solidarity with Palestinians and Gaza amid the Israel-Hamas war.

The owner of the group and operator of the bulk carrier, that was targeted on Monday (Feb 12), regularly trades cargo with Iran, "so this was assessed to be the likely destination", said Ambrey.

"The group owner of the bulker was also listed on the US stock market index NASDAQ, which was identified as the likely reason for the attack," it said.&nbsp;

<h2>Houthis claim attack</h2>

Yemen's Houthi rebels released a statement on Monday claiming&nbsp;an attack against a US ship in the Red Sea with a "number of suitable naval missiles".

"The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces targeted the American ship Star Iris in the Red Sea with a number of suitable naval missiles, and the strikes were accurate and direct," Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said in a speech on Monday.

The Houthis "will not hesitate to carry out more operations in retaliation to the Zionist crimes against our brothers in the Gaza Strip, as well as in response to the ongoing American-British aggression against our dear country."
