A Greek-owned cargo ship, which was reportedly travelling to India, was struck by a small craft off Yemen's Red Sea port of Hodeidah, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Wednesday (Jun 12). It appeared to be the latest attack by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels on vessels.

In an official release, UKMTO, which is run by Britain's Royal Navy, said that it has received a report of an incident 66NM southwest of Al Hudaydah, Yemen.

UKMTO released three updates. In the first one, it said that the vessel was hit on the stern by a small craft. The small craft was described as white in colour and five - seven metres in length.

Greek-owned ship, reportedly bound to India, damaged by small vessel in Red Sea

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday (June 12) that it had destroyed two anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) launchers operated by Houthi forces in Yemen.

In a recent operation, US forces destroyed Houthi missile launchers posing a direct threat to American and allied troops, as well as commercial ships navigating the Red Sea.

This action comes amidst the ongoing blockade imposed by the Iran-backed Houthi rebels.

The CENTCOM took to social media to announce the destruction of the missile launcher.

On X, they wrote, “In the past 24 hours, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces successfully destroyed three anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) launchers in a Houthi controlled area of Yemen and one uncrewed aerial system (UAS) launched from a Houthi controlled area of Yemen over the Red Sea.”

“Additionally, one Iranian-backed Houthi unmanned surface vessel (USV) struck M/V Tutor, a Liberian flagged, Greek owned and operated vessel, in the Red Sea. M/V Tutor most recently docked in Russia. The impact of the USV caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room," the post further said.

However, there were no injuries or damage reported by either US, coalition or commercial ships.

This continued malign and reckless behaviour by the Iranian-backed Houthis threatens regional stability and endangers the lives of mariners across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

“The aggressive actions have precipitated a series of retaliatory strikes by US and British forces since February as the conflict expanded to affect broader international shipping interests,” CENTCOM said.

It may be mentioned here, the Houthis’ actions have rigorously disrupted global shipping, impacting at least half of the world's cargo flow through the critical Bab al-Mandab Strait and the Gulf of Aden.

US forces strike missile launchers in Yemen

Yemen's Houthis on Friday said they targeted two vessels in the Red Sea with drones and missiles, but there was no independent confirmation of the purported attacks.

Houthis target US ships: Houthis target two vessels over Red Sea

A surge of attacks on ships in the red sea is forcing a major rerouting of global shipping routes. This disruption is causing significant delays and, more importantly, a sharp rise in carbon emissions.

Yemen's Houthi group freed more than 100 detainees in Sanaa on Sunday, calling the move a "unilateral humanitarian initiative" to pardon prisoners and return them to their families.

"Most of them are humanitarian cases, including the sick, the wounded, and the elderly," said Abdul Qader Al-Murtada, head of the Houthi-run prisoner affairs committee, who announced the release and said the detainees had been government soldiers captured on the battlefront.

But Yemen's internationally recognised government said the detainees were not soldiers, but civilians the Houthis had kidnapped from homes, mosques and workplaces.

"Releasing these victims under any name does not absolve (the Houthis) of this crime," Majed Fadail, deputy minister for human rights in Yemen's internationally-recognised government wrote in a post on social media platform X.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) confirmed on Sunday the unilateral release of 113 "conflict-related" detainees and said in a statement that it assisted the detainees to ensure their release was humane and dignified.

"I feel completely at ease, as if I was born again today. Because we were desperate and thought we would never get out," said Murshed Al Jamaai, a detainee released on Sunday.

Yemen has been mired in conflict since the Houthis ousted the government from the capital Sanaa in late 2014. The Saudi Arabia-led military coalition intervened in 2015, aiming to restore the government.

The outlines of a proposed Yemen UN roadmap for peace were agreed last December, but progress towards peace stalled as the Houthis ramped up attacks on ships in and around the Red Sea, saying they are acting in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza war.

The campaign has disrupted global commerce, stoked fears of inflation and deepened concern that fallout from the Israel-Hamas war could destabilise parts of the Middle East.

According to marine security firm Ambrey, on Saturday, a missile struck a crude oil tanker near the coast of Mokha, in southwest Yemen, which is located across the strategic Bab Al-Mandeb strait. "A Panama-flagged crude oil tanker was reportedly 'attacked'" about 10 nautical miles southwest of Mokha, Ambrey said. The firm added that information "indicated the vessel was hit by a missile and that there was a fire" in the ship's rear. Later, the company stated that it had "received information indicating that the tanker had received assistance. One of the steering units of the vessel was reportedly functional.” Also read: Yemen’s Houthis claim to have targeted US warship and vessel ‘Destiny’ in Red Sea The marine security department of the British navy previously reported that it had received a report of a vessel that was "sustaining slight damage after being struck by an unknown object." “The vessel and crew are safe and continuing to its next port of call,” United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) added.
Do the Houthis have hypersonic missile?

In March, Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi claimed to have successfully tested a hypersonic missile. The claim was made by the group to Russian media. Citing a source, Sputnik reported, "Missile forces of the movement have successfully tested a missile that can reach speeds of up to Mach 8 [6,200 miles per hour] and is powered by solid fuel."

The reports have mentioned that the Iran-backed rebel group is planning to begin manufacturing the missiles for use against targets in the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden, as well as Israel.

Hypersonic weapons fly at speeds higher than Mach 5 and the one claimed to have tested by Houthis is Mach 8 which is eight times the speed of sound. Such missiles could pose crucial challenges to missile defence systems because of their speed and manoeuvrability.
