The attack late on Monday on Wase district in Plateau state was the latest violence in an area which has long been a flashpoint for disputes over resources and for outbreaks of intercommunal clashes.

Armed men invaded Zurak community, shooting sporadically and torching houses, Plateau state commissioner for information Musa Ibrahim Ashoms told AFP by telephone.&nbsp;

"As we speak, about 40 people have been confirmed dead. Zurak is a popular mining community," he said.

Local youth leader Shafi'i Sambo also said at least 42 people had been killed in the raid.

Wase has deposits of zinc and lead, while Plateau as a whole is known for its tin mining industry.

Sitting on the dividing line between Nigeria's mostly Muslim north and predominantly Christian south, Plateau often sees outbreaks of violence sparked by disputes between nomadic herders and pastoral farmers.

Climate change has also helped escalate tensions over grazing land, water access and other resources such as the state's metal reserves.

Parts of northwest and northcentral Nigeria have also been terrorised by heavily armed criminal gangs, who raid villages to loot and carry out mass kidnappings for ransom.

In January, intercommunal clashes erupted in Plateau's Mangu town that left churches and mosques burned, more than 50 people dead and thousands displaced.

The inspiration for the bill came from Steve Sue, a Honolulu resident who created a documentary about the origins of the shaka gesture, as explained by State Senator Glenn Wakai. While talking with Wakai in December, Sue expressed a desire to find a way for Hawaii to enshrine the gesture. “I realized that there’s a huge lurking asset here for the state that’s not really being protected,” Sue told The Washington Post.

After a detailed discussion, they agreed that a bill would help preserve the shaka’s connections to the state.

“Since it was my third pregnancy, I told Jonathan that he didn’t have to come to my appointment. I was like, 'There will be plenty of scans.' So I’m there without him, and I’m laughing and then I’m crying. I’m a little bit hysterical. And my doctor goes, ‘Let’s call your husband!’” she added.

“The pregnancy was high-risk for Mercedes, too, and I was crying in the delivery room because it was like, ‘Everyone is safe. We made it,’” Jonathan said.

The babies are at Texas Children's Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). They all are on CPAP machines to breathe and are eating through feeding tubes. The children will be home by July, according to the doctors.

"Given the stakes involved, it is normal that the development of these algorithms and the fine-tuning of these sensors is requiring some effort and time, but the most important thing is to be ready for the Olympic Games 2024 with a system that armed forces operators have fully adopted," they added.

An American soldier has been arrested in Russia charged with stealing, according to two US officials.

The soldier, identified as&nbsp;Staff Sgt Gordon Black, will be detained until July, a court in Vladivostok said on Tuesday (May 7).&nbsp;

Black was previously positioned in South Korea.

He was en route back to Fort Cavazos in Texas, his home base.

However, authorities reported that he made an unexpected detour to Russia.

Cynthia Smith, an army spokesperson, confirmed that on Thursday (May 2), a serviceman was taken into custody in Vladivostok, a significant commercial and military hub on the Pacific coast, due to allegations of unlawful behaviour.

The Russian authorities informed the United States, and the military subsequently reached out to the soldier's relatives.

The junta implemented the conscription order in February, following which approximately 100,000 men requested work permits. According to media accounts, the order caused thousands of people to line up for visas outside foreign embassies in Yangon, while some crossed into neighbouring Thailand to avoid enlistment. Michel Patrick Boisvert, who served as finance minister under former Prime Minister Ariel Henry, has been filling the role on an interim basis. Belizaire's nomination must be confirmed by a declaration in&nbsp;Haiti's national gazette.

In an interview with CNN published on Monday, Vitel'homme Innocent, who heads the Kraze Barye gang and is accused of orchestrating the 2021 kidnapping of U.S. missionaries, called for the council to listen to the gangs and find a resolution to the crisis "as soon as possible."

Kraze Barye forms part of a loose coalition of gangs known as Viv Ansanm, or "Live Together," who now control most of capital Port-au-Prince.

The coalition is demanding the future government grant them an amnesty for their crimes and create a plan for young gang members who may have been forced into joining, either under threat of violence or due to a lack of economic alternatives, Innocent told CNN.

Viv Ansanm's leader, a former police officer named Jimmy Cherizier who is known as "Barbeque," warned of consequences if the gangs were ignored, in a message shared to social media over the weekend.

"Viv Ansanm is ready to talk. It's either we are all at the table, or the table gets destroyed with all of us," he said.

According to U.N. estimates, more than one person was killed in&nbsp;Haiti&nbsp;gang violence every hour in the first three months of this year. There are also widespread reports of gangs using mass sexual violence, ransom kidnappings and torture to extort the population.

Most disturbingly, they used their child as part of their plan, leaving them behind at the restaurant when they skipped out on the bill.

Thirty-nine-year-old Ann with partner McDonagh used to follow a similar pattern for eating free meals at different restaurants in Great Britain's Wales.

Several videos of the diners have gone viral on social media. Mostly, the duo was accompanied by other people claimed as their family members. According to a few family restaurants, the two used to follow the same procedure with premeditation and continued to rob multiple restaurants.&nbsp;
