Ram Madhav, National General Secretary, BJP & Board of Governors, India Foundation

Nationalism:

Nationalism in history and seen various phases, until the advent of Hitler and Mussolini. Today, the word has again started finding its own importance and its own relevance.

In the 21st Century, nationalism should be protecting the interest of one's own country.

As far as India is concerned, we have looked at nationalism with a beneficial vision, it is for the benefit of an individual in the larger interest. We believe in 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbkam'.

National pride is there in every country in the world, in a connected world with technology, travel connecting us, Nations National Pride exist, the border will lose their importance.

Multilateralism has an important role to play, global institutions created in the last century have to undergo major reforms for their own survival.

Question is for them, whether they want to remain relevant or not. Geneva Conventions is being violated by nations, only be revisiting the policies. Nations in the east have become the powerhouses, why is India not finding a place in UNSC.

China

We take a stand on United Nation related resolutions based on the situations at those junctures. India has taken stands on different occasions, we have taken different positions on different resolutions.

Jammu and Kashmir

The situation in J&K projected by certain sections and liberals don't have faith in democratic institutions, their faith is in anarchy, the word used is J&K is a "conflict zone", Kashmir Valley that has seen violence thanks to our neighbour, Kashmir Valley has 3 Parliamentarian Seats in Indian Parliament, 2 Seats have been peaceful except for one.

The false narrative of Kashmir of conflict, 8 months have passed not even single big violence has taken place. Since propaganda is going we offered our international friends to see it themselves.

Ambassadors who got there came and told me, there were traffic jams in Srinagar City. 5-6 leaders are still in detention, even they will be let off sooner or later.

Manoj Ladwa, Founder and CEO, India Inc

Nationalism

I don't see a conflict between Nationalism and multilateralism. The nationalism is deeply rooted in "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" Brexit is a classic example where the British recognised the world outside the EU.

Fundamentally EU failed to reform, UN, World Bank, IMF failed to reform. These institutions need to reform. India should now be Rule Maker, not Rule Taker.

General Joginder Jaswant Singh, Former Chief of Army Staff

Nationalism

Only the Indian Ocean is named after India. This is the sphere of influence of India. India is not just India what you see now, India is Hindustan, Al-Hind by Arabs, French and Chinese also named India.
China has a huge land-mass called Tibet.

India's neighbourhood policy

Our region is the most Nuclearised Region of the world. The risk is there, today we want to a peaceful world. The world is working out on dynamics by stabilising with a number of countries.

Pradeep Vasant Naik, Air Chief Marshal (Retd)

India's neighbourhood policy

India in its present moment defines good relations with neighbours as its prime object of foreign policy. Perception of India interfering in internal issues of other countries has gone down. There is a race of power between the US and China, India is now beginning to grow to inspire smaller countries to participate in major affairs.

Kashmir issue

Kashmir issue is misunderstood by a lot of people around the world. Kashmir has been with us for the last so many years. There should be no doubt in anybody's mind that Kashmir is not an integral part of India. Whether the world supports it or not it will remain an integral part of India.

Aleqa Hammond, First Female Prime Minister of Greenland

Climate Change

It's very important that we talk about climate change at all levels, especially with our children- because they are the ones that are going to be most impacted. For anyone following News should know climate change is happening big time. The ice cap is 3kms thick, the biggest ice mass after Antarctica. The ice cap is melting all year round, the temperature is rising in Greenland, this is serious matter. It is changing our economy, our perspective of how the world is working.

Venessa Nakate, Founder & Climate Activist

Climate Change

The issue of Climate Change needs to get all of us worried not just young people. When you look around you see the devastating impact of climate change. As for India, last year the temperature went over 56 degrees. Not all of us depend on agriculture, but those directly related with farming are suffering.

People need to stop running away from the topic of climate change. There are people who act interested but when solutions are pitched, they back out. We need our voices, as it is powerful and can bring a change.

James Terry, Professor of Geosciences

Climate Change

People there are facing very real threats. The islands in the South Pacific are facing sea-level rise, changing ocean temperature, stress on groundwater, the stress of available land and available resources are limited. There are two kinds of actions that can be taken- mitigation and adaptation.

Often new solutions are trial and error, they are supposed to be given a fair attempt. We have to make sure we are behind science and science is well-funded.

Reham Khan, Journalist, Commentator and Broadcaster

Pakistan-US Relationship

I think the minute I saw US President Trump sitting along Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, saying he wants to be a mediator, that was the moment it all went wrong. If anyone can mediate it can only be China, every single time India-Pakistan has had any issue, China has stayed neutral, even though China is an all-weather friend to Pakistan, China has not become a party to India-Pakistan dispute.

Khurshid Mahmud Kasuri, Former Foreign Minister of Pakistan

Relationship with the USA has taken a nosedive since 2011. Raymond Davis, CIA agent was arrested and the relationship took a worse nosedive. US President Donald Trump has said many a time that he is ready to mediate between India and Pakistan knowing the fact that India would never agree to mediation, this cannot be without a reason, he is reckless but not mad.

There are only two countries that can play a role, China, India will not accept. The US has a slight tilt towards India.

Bashir Khan, Former Foreign Secretary of Pakistan

Pakistan is a market of $200 million-plus, economics is a factor politically. The American position globally speaking and mostly in our part of the world, it is because of the China factor as the US is viewing the region. The states of South Asia has lost the capacity to view the region.

The Political systems, economic systems are dysfunctional. Those challenges are arising from society's challenges.

Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Former President Club de Madrid and First Female President of Latvia

Social media has had a great deal of influence in protests across the world. Participation of young people is part of the democratic process. In many parts of the world, one would wish to encourage the youth to participate, young people, are our priority.

Mariya Didi, Minister of Defence of the Republic of Maldives

Rising Islamic radicalism in Maldives

Radicalism anywhere is not good. Peaceful co-existence is the solution in the Maldives for radicalism and we are trying very hard to implement it. The Maldives earlier used to be one of the most peaceful countries. Our country has 187 islands with people dispersed all over and it is a lot of work. The first thing we have done is acknowledging there is a problem and then identifying it following it coming up with a solution of co-existence.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, Former Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

India-China relations

Sri Lanka and India share the same heritage, even as Colombo has friendly relations with Beijing. We were first to sign a trade agreement.

Highlighting the sudden rise of China in economic, military and political spheres, he said that is an era which is witnessing the end of western dominance. It's only China that can face trade war and coronavirus simultaneously.

WION Global Summit: Climate change is changing our economy, says Greenland's first female Prime Minister

India has arrived.

The old reticent and romantic India is no more. Under Prime Minister Modi, India has emerged as a pragmatic and proactive nation... more importantly, we are an ambitious nation today. Our ambition is to rise as an influential and responsible global power.

The world in the 21st century is multipolar. India, with its 1.3 billion population, vibrant democratic institutions and a nearly $3 Trillion economy, the 5th largest in the world, is today an important pole. India is playing a key role with renewed confidence on the global theatre.

We are loved by many; hated by some, but can be ignored by none.

The institutions of global governance like the UN, UNSC, Brettenwoods institutions etc were all drafted in the last century when the world was divided into two opposing camps. The efficacy and efficiency of these institutions have eroded with the changing world and the emergence of multipolar world order. It is much more pronounced in India’s neighbourhood than anywhere else. We have serious challenges posed to multilateral agreements like the Geneva Convention or the UNCLOS regulations in our immediate neighbourhood.

India believes that time has come for the world to revisit these institutional frameworks so that they can remain relevant in the 21st-century world. Most important reform needed to make the nations of the new world like India and the ASEAN greater stakeholders in them.

India lives in a neighbourhood that has emerged as the 21st-century powerhouse. The Indo-Pacific region is the most happening region in the world today. It was Pacific-Atlantic in the last century, but the global power axis has moved away from there in this century and is relocated today in the Indo-Pacific region.

The Indian Ocean has emerged as the epicentre of global trade. Close to 50% of the world’s container traffic and 70% of the energy routes pass through this region today. It is here that the world’s largest as well as the fastest-growing new economies are situated. It is here that populations with purchasing power exist. On a different note, it is in this region that you will find the highest number of warships and submarines roaming about. Highest defence spending happens here.

The centrality of the Indian Ocean to global trade can’t be understated, and centrality of India to the Indian Ocean too can’t be ignored. Rise of the Indo-Pacific as the new global power axis can’t be missed. The centrality of the ASEAN powers to the Indo-Pacific too can’t be overlooked.

India’s Act East - Act Fast is a key foreign policy dimension of it. As an important power in the region, India is committed to managing the affairs of the region on the principles of inclusivity, freedom of navigation and overflights, and open and secure trade lines. Countries in this most happening region must give up oneupmanship in their policy initiatives and follow the principle of stakeholdership. Nothing should be thrust on other countries as a fait accompli.

Lastly, India’s grand arrival on the global stage can very well be testified by the confident de-hyphenated approach that it adopts in bilateral relations. Prime Minister Modi has initiated it and the world leaders follow today.

India’s success in this policy of de-hyphenation can be gauged from the fact that we have strong stand-alone bilateral ties with the US and Russia; we are friends with the Saudis as well as the Iranians; while our relations with the Israelis have grown substantially, we firmly stand by the just demands of the Palestinians as well.

Prime Minister Modi displayed a unique leadership quality of building strong interpersonal relationships with many important world leaders including President Xi Jinping of China, President Putin of Russia and President Trump of the US. It has helped in all these countries too in de-hyphenating India in their bilateral relations. The stand-alone two-day visit of President Trump to India ten days ago is the latest example.

Prime Minister Vajpayee described the US and India as natural allies. We have strong bilateral trade and people-to-people relations. Close to 4-million strong Indian diaspora is an important bond between our two countries. But the relationship at present is more than that. The upgraded US-India relations are a defining one for both the countries and also the larger world in the 21st century.

We must not overlook the fact that the early decades of the 21st century have witnessed the rise of authoritarianism, terrorism and anarchist liberalism in the world. The world is becoming less democratic. In such a scenario, the coming together of the world’s oldest and richest, and the world’s largest and most successful democracies signifies a coalition of nations to fight against these tendencies. Together, the two countries can work towards global peace, democratic liberalism and universal prosperity.

Unlike in the past few decades, India is now eager to play a bigger role in the 21st-century global governance. Our hosting of the G-20 heads of nations summit in 2022 is the proof that India has arrived.

More, I travel abroad, my fascination for multiculturalism and civic discipline increase by leaps and bound. I had a strange encounter in Dubai recently. It is not allowed to pick passengers by taxis apart from hotels or designated stops.

In this case, I was sauntering at Dubai's Marina front and wanted to immediately return to the hotel. Instead of walking back to the designated spot, I insisted that the driver come to me for the pick-up. He asked me to go to a nearby hotel so that he could pick me up. While we were walking towards the hotel, the car arrived right in front of the hotel and the barrier was still down. As usual, I and my friends rushed inside the car and asked him to start the vehicle.

The barrier opened, and we went inside the hotel and took a U-turn through the porch to come out of the property. On return, our car was pulled aside, and our driver received an earful from the security guard for picking up passengers from the road.

Rest of us inside the car maintained a pin drop silence. The security guard kept on repeating that the law has been violated and he should have waited for the barrier to open and guests should have been picked from inside. It resulted in a verbal brawl even as our driver kept on apologizing. He eventually let us go but I don’t think that this could have happened in India.

Interestingly, both the driver and security guard were from India. In 90 per cent of such cases in India, the guard wouldn't have taken pains to point out the error, and of course, the passenger wouldn't have bothered.

Civic discipline is fundamental to the functioning of any democracy. It protects civil society from the rough edges of powerful and rich as discipline on the ground remains equal for everyone. Same is the case in Singapore where the application of law on the ground level does not discriminate between the powerful and less powerful.

However, In India, democracy has been reduced only to elections. Though it is a matter of great pride that India since independence unlike many other nations has been successfully conducting elections making the transition of power peaceful. But it has failed in installing sense civic discipline in society. It is for this reason our civic infrastructure and law and order situation continues to remain problematic.

This very lack of civil discipline has also affected the emergence of peaceful multiculturalism in India. Regularly students from the North-East become objects of stereotype and violence in Delhi. North Indians receive rough treatment in Mumbai over economic issues. In the name of job protest, caste-based groups bring cities and towns to a halt. Even controversial films lead to violence. It is a result of civic indiscipline whereby one individual does not respect the right of another individual.

For example, both Singapore and Dubai have different cultures and dominant religion but have been successful in transforming the attitude of their society. In both countries, people from across the world work. Both cities are extremely multicultural and at the same time ensure that civic discipline remains the hallmark of their daily life.

In my opinion, it is the latter which ensures that the former can take root in society. It ensures that community or class does not trample over the right of an individual which is essential for a country to become multicultural. The ugly Indian brawls in top cities over the ownership of jobs and infrastructure which aptly shows why Indian cities have not evolved a true multicultural spirit.

The only way India can become truly multicultural and disciplined is by ensuring that civic discipline along with gender sensitisation becomes a priority.

Where India fails: Multiculturalism and civic discipline

Roland Schatz, founder and CEO of Media Tenor International, Nayla Al Khaja, UAE’s first female director and producer and Vicky Kapur, executive editor of Khaleej Times participated in a panel discussion on "The Changing Face of Media & Entertainment" at WION's Global Summit in Dubai on Wednesday evening. The panel was moderated by journalist and author Riz Khan.

Roland Schatz spoke about the state of world media, the importance of questioning ourselves as journalists and how “relevance” plays a vital role in presenting news to the audience. He started by saying that “the moment we understand what media is about, we will probably get very quickly to the solution. It’s all about relevance.” And questioned: “How can you be relevant when you are obsessed about who is first or fastest. If speed is your driving force, you can't be relevant.”

He said, “The best TV is in your head. Close your eyes and think, what was the main subject that India was framed the most in - in BBC, in German TV or Chinese TV. What was the number 1 theme? Was it cricket? Was it the military? It was rape. Does rape really represent India? What was the main theme framed in Pakistan? Terror attacks. You could either blame me that we don’t know how to do our job but it always takes two to tango. I am a fifth generation journalist.”

He then addressed the audience again and asked: “What have you done as people from India, Pakistan, South East Asian region to tell my colleagues your story?”

Roland also spoke about adding value to each story, each narrative as journalists. He reflected: "We have 200-300 fascinating stories on our desk, for us to leave the office but that's not relevance. It's not getting us to reality. The beautiful thing is we are not alone in this race of losing trust. But who is providing value?”

He equated value with money and said, “We in the West, if we cover Islam and Muslims, why is it that we know if we cover them it has to be only about one topic - terror. There's something very wrong that we are doing with this. We need to get back to where we were when we started, get back the courage that we had. We spend a lot of time talking about terror attacks. In Germany, we learned that a terrorist can no longer be a terrorist if he is not finding a climate of sympathy around him. As long as we give terrorists the front page we create 100 terrorists.”

The event was earlier inaugurated by chief guest and guest of honour His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance, United Arab Emirates.

How can you be relevant when you are obsessed about who is first or fastest: Roland Schatz at WION Global Summit

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman on Wednesday said that he stands with the families of the soldiers who were killed in the recent Pulwama attack.

On being asked whether India should play Pakistan in the 2019 World Cup, Laxman in an exclusive chat with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo at the WION Global Summit in Dubai said that "at this moment cricket is the last thing on my mind."

"We have to rally behind our security forces. In this time of mourning, we have to stand with the families of the soldiers killed. We have to make sure that terrorists and terrorism end once and for all. And hence, cricket is the last thing on my mind."
