Thousands of emergency responders, along with the fire-fighting helicopters have been pressed into service to contain the wildfire but so far, the efforts have not yielded significant results. "The fires in Chongqing were the result of "spontaneous combustion" mainly caused by extremely high temperatures" a Chinese expert was quoted as saying by a state-run media outlet. According to reports, Chongqing is witnessing its worst heatwave since 1961 when record-keeping began. For several weeks, the temperatures have hovered above 40 C, with several districts seeing temperatures as high as 45 C. Such has been the scorching heat that as many as 66 rivers and 25 reservoirs running across the municipality have run dry. The authorities have already declared a red alert, the highest level of heat warning in the city. The heatwave has been relentless across China As reported by WION, it is not only Chongqing that is facing such a heatwave in the country. Numerous provinces across mainland China have been dealing with a devastating heatwave that has crippled the economy and forced the authorities to clock in desperate measures. Last week, the Yangtze river had dried up in parts, forcing the regions that are dependent on the longest river to deploy pumps and cloud-seeding rockets. According to Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), tens of thousands of hectares of forest in France, Portugal, and Spain have gone up in smoke&nbsp;this year.

Because of an extended heatwave that saw temperature records shatter, France has reached unprecedented levels of carbon pollution from wildfires in the last three months, reports AFP. As per the European Union's satellite monitoring programme, they are at their highest level since records began in 2003.

CAMS reported that the daily total fire radiative power in France, Spain, and Portugal in July and August was "significantly higher" than usual.&nbsp;The agency has warned that&nbsp;a huge chunk of Western Europe is currently in "extreme fire danger," with other areas in "very extreme fire danger."

"The very extreme fire danger ratings that have been forecasted for large areas of southern Europe mean that the scale and intensity of any fires can be greatly increased, and this is what we have been observing in our emissions estimates and the impacts it has on local air quality,"&nbsp;said Mark Parrington, CAMS senior scientist.

​​​​​​​Elsewhere, in Brazil, according to official numbers released Monday, the number of forest fires in the Brazilian Amazon climbed by 8 per cent last month compared to July 2021, sounding the latest alarm for the world's largest rainforest.

While far from the worst July on record (19,364 fires in 2005), satellite monitoring recorded 5,373 fires last month, up from 4,977 in July last year, according to INPE, Brazil's space agency.

Larger and more intense wildfires have a massive impact on the environment as it deteriorates the air quality and leads to pollution in the surrounding regions.&nbsp;

A recent study can explain to what extent the impact of wildfires can be seen. In a study, published in Science Advances, researchers from the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) found that soot and other burned biomass from wildfires are impacting the Arctic.&nbsp;

Researchers discovered that the wildfires in Colorado and elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere can eventually make their way to the Arctic. If this becomes prominent, it can lead to ripple effects on climatic patterns for the rest of the globe - a matter of major concern.&nbsp;

Patricia DeRepentigny, the lead author on the paper and a postdoctoral fellow at NCAR, said: "This research found that particles emitted from wildfires where people live can really impact what happens in the Arctic thousands of miles away."&nbsp;

"Sometimes the Arctic can be seen as this region that we shouldn't care about because it's so far away from where we live … but the fact that there's this back-and-forth of what happens here with the wildfires can affect the sea ice, and a diminishing sea ice can then lead to more wildfires here, connects us with the Arctic a little bit more," DeRepentigny added.&nbsp;

DeRepentigny and her team studied a recent model - the NCAR-based Community Earth System Model version 2 (CESM2). They noticed that the Arctic sea lost ice drastically towards the end of the 20th century. The previous models didn't highlight it, hence, the researchers decided to probe it further.&nbsp;

After the due analysis, they found that the biomass burning emissions had the biggest effect on Arctic sea ice loss when simulated. They compared the forcings between the new and previous generations of climate models. Forcings are the different ways a climate model can be influenced, such as carbon dioxide or methane emissions or solar radiation.&nbsp;

As mentioned in the study, the researchers found that the main difference is due to the non-linear cloud effects that can emerge when aerosols, small particles or liquid droplets, released by fires interact with Arctic clouds.&nbsp;

Wildfires impact on health

Wildfires also lead to several health issues such as exposure to smoke for a prolonged period of time can cause eye and respiratory tract irritation. There's a risk of serious disorders, such as reduced lung function, bronchitis, exacerbation of asthma and heart failure.&nbsp;

Raging wildfires are severely impacting the wildlife in France. On Tuesday, 363 animals from the Arachon Zoo had to be evacuated. The zoo is located in western France. The animals have already suffered and some of them have been weakened due to the heat. They were shifted to a zoo in central France.

Monkeys were evacuated first as burning trees affected their natural habitat. As per media reports, the evacuation was tricky as special arrangements had to be made to safely transport the animals.

Wildfires raging in France have also destroyed campsites in the wooded area as well.&nbsp;

Mostly debris, walls and a swimming pool were left of the campsite La Foret du Pilat, a stone’s throw away from the Dune du Pilat, Europe’s tallest sand dune.

Firefighters on Wednesday checked the campsite to locate and mark any gas containers left behind by campers.

“The purpose is to secure them so that the companies that come for clean-up can do so safely,” firefighter captain Gilles Elschger said.

Firefighters in the southwest Gironde department have been battling since July 12 to tame the flames, which have so far ravaged nearly 50,904 acres (20,600 hectares) of land, the local prefecture said on Wednesday (July 20).
