But the 46-year-old's famous fight surfaced in time to put him one-over heading into Saturday's third round and nine back of front-running Scheffler.

"We haven't had it like this. It's going to be exciting, and it's going to be fun for all of us."

With three wins in his last five PGA Tour starts, Scheffler showed why he is the hottest golfer on the planet taking a bogey on his first hole then going on to post the day's best round.

The 25-year-old American, even with a commanding five shot lead, cannot afford to get complacent being chased by trio of major winners including South Africa's Charl Schwartzel (69) the 2011 winner at Augusta National, Irishman Shane Lowry (68) the 2019 British Open winner, and defending Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan (69).

"There's still 50 guys in the field, something like that, I'm sure, and I can't worry about what those guys are doing," said Scheffler. "I'm just going to go out and play my game and just keep doing what I'm doing.

"Still quite a long way to go."

"It's nice to build up a little bit of a lead, but I'm not really going to be thinking about it tonight or anything."

As spectacular a round as Scheffler had it still was not enough to pry the spotlight away from Woods.

But as he has he has done so many times before on the Augusta back nine Woods would not surrender, hitting back with birdies at 13 and 14 before closing with four consecutive pars.

"Tomorrow is going to be an important day with as cool and as tough as they're predicting," said Woods. "It's going to be quick, and I need to go out there and put myself there.

"If you're within five or six on that back nine going into Sunday, you've got a chance. So I just need to get there."

The US Forest Service's own prescribed burn started a sprawling 2022 wildfire that nearly reached Los Alamos, New Mexico, the agency acknowledged on Monday in a report published after a lengthy investigation.&nbsp;

The Cerro Pelado fire burned in dry, windy conditions across more than 60 square miles (155 square kilometres) and crept within a few miles of the city of Los Alamos and its companion US national security lab. As the fire approached, schools closed and evacuation bags were packed before the flames tapered off.

Investigators traced the wildfire to a burn of piles of forest debris commissioned by the Forest Service. The burn became a holdover fire, smouldering undetected under wet snow, with no signs of smoke or heat for months, said Southwestern Regional Forester Michiko Martin.&nbsp;

The revelation prompted immediate rebukes against the Forest Service by New Mexico political leaders, including Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. She said she was "outraged over the US Forest Service's negligence that caused this destruction".

Episodes of extremely hot and dry weather in recent years have triggered concerns about prescribed burns as techniques for clearing forest debris, concerns that Grisham echoed.&nbsp;

The federal government already has acknowledged that it started the largest wildfire in state history, which charged more than 530 square miles (1,373 square kilometres) of the Rocky Mountain foothills east of Santa Fe, New Mexico, destroying homes and livelihoods.&nbsp;

The Forest Service last spring halted all prescribed burn operations for 90 days while it conducted a review of procedures and policies. By the end of the moratorium, managers learned that they can't rely on past success, and must continuously learn and adapt to changing conditions, Forest Service Chief Randy Moore recently told New Mexico lawmakers.&nbsp;

Firefighters now monitor pile burns using handheld thermal devices and drones that can detect heat, Martin said Monday.&nbsp;

Examples of prescribed burns that escaped control include the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire that swept through residential areas of Los Alamos and across 12 square miles (31 square kilometres) of the laboratory —&nbsp;more than one-quarter of the campus. The fire destroyed more than 230 homes and 45 structures at the lab. In 2011, a larger and faster-moving fire burned the fringes of the lab.&nbsp;

In the spring of 2022, wildfires were propelled by ferocious winds across Arizona and New Mexico, combined with extreme drought and warm temperatures, casting a pall of smoke across the region.&nbsp;

US Sen. Martin Heinrich urged the Forest Service to be more nimble in its investigations and decisions.&nbsp;

"The warming climate is making our forests more vulnerable to catastrophic wildfires. That's a reality that our Forest Service can and must urgently respond to when deciding when and how to do prescribed burns,"&nbsp;he said in a statement.

"We cannot catch up to this reality if it takes nearly a year to even make the findings on the Cerro Pelado Fire public."&nbsp;

An initial probe into the origin of the Cerro Pelado fire was conducted by a wildland fire investigator from Washington state's Department of Natural Resources and pointed toward an ash pit from the earlier prescribed burn as the likely source, while ruling out other potential sources such as campfires and lightning. But it stopped short of a definitive conclusion.&nbsp;

The Forest Service commissioned a second investigation by its own special agents and concluded that the prescribed burn and its windblown embers were the cause.&nbsp;

The Biden administration is trying to confront worsening wildfires in the US West through a multi-billion dollar cleanup of forests choked with dead trees and undergrowth. Chainsaws, heavy machinery,&nbsp;and controlled burns, are major components of the effort, with Congress in the last two years approving more than USD 4 billion in new funding to prevent repeats of destructive infernos.&nbsp;

Extreme weather continued to batter Italy, on Tuesday (July 25), as Palermo airport was forced to shut down for hours due to wildfires, while over a dozen cities across the country were placed on red alert because of the high temperatures. The Palermo airport was closed for hours due to wildfires, however, the airport operator, shortly after 0900 GMT took to X (formerly Twitter)&nbsp;and announced that only a limited number of outbound flights would be allowed “for the moment”. It was later announced that a plane from northern Italy’s Turnin was able to land, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

The wildfires in Sicily continued to rage across the region&nbsp;on Tuesday amid high temperatures. The airport was closed after firefighters struggled to put out the major blaze in the nearby area which has since also disrupted local road and rail traffic.&nbsp;

The regional authorities also reported the death of a woman after an ambulance could not reach her house due to wildfire-related disruptions. The closure of the airport also further exacerbated Sicily’s travel while the region is in the midst of a peak tourist season.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the island’s main airport of Catania, also the country’s fifth-biggest, was closed after a fire in a terminal building but later reopened for a few flights. Wildfires also raged across various parts of Calabria, the southernmost part of the Italian mainland.&nbsp;

Palermo and Catania were&nbsp;also placed on red alert by Italian authorities due to soaring temperatures and witnessed power and water supply cuts. The temperature in parts of eastern Sicily rose to 47 degree&nbsp;Celsius, said Sicily’s civil protection agency.&nbsp;

This comes as the region recorded the highest temperature in Europe, two years ago, at 48.8 degree&nbsp;Celsius.&nbsp;

In an overnight storm in Italy’s financial capital, Milan, roofs were torn off, and trees were uprooted causing road blockages and disrupted overground transportation, reported Reuters. Milan residents reported torrential rain and hail on Tuesday morning which have also flooded parts of the city.&nbsp;

“I have been through 65 summers in my lifetime...and what I am seeing now is not normal, we can no longer deny it, climate change is changing our lives,” said Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala.&nbsp;

The two “tragic” deaths due to bad weather in northern Italy’s Lissone and near Brescia were confirmed by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Among those killed was a 16-year-old girl who was on a camping trip near Brescia when a tree fell on her tent overnight due to high winds and torrential rain, on Tuesday. On Monday, a middle-aged woman died after also being hit by a falling tree in Lissone.&nbsp;

As wildfires rage on the Greek island of Rhodes for the seventh day, more than 2,000 holidayers have been evacuated on Monday (July 24th). Upcoming trips have been cancelled by tour operators as fires remain out of control on Tuesday (July 25th).

Reuters reports that even as repatriation flights continued on&nbsp;Tuesday, the nation's Civil Protection authority warned that almost every part of Greece remains in the grip of a record-breaking heatwave, and that the threat of further blazes remains high.

<h2>Dutch ministry&nbsp;issues&nbsp;travel warning </h2>

The Dutch foreign ministry has issued a travel warning for Rhodes, and the nearby islands of Corfu and Evia, that have also seen wildfires break out in recent days.&nbsp;

Over the weekend, in Rhodes, some 20,000 people were forced to leave their homes and hotels as the "inferno" that began last Tuesday reached the coastal resorts on the island's southeast over the weekend.&nbsp;

TUI, which is one of the world's largest tour operators, announced that it was cancelling trips to the island on Friday. In lieu, it offered free cancellations and rebooking to other locations.&nbsp;

<h2>Evacuations amid&nbsp;firefighting </h2>

Talking to Reuters, fire brigade spokesperson Ioanis Artopios said,&nbsp;"Firefighting forces have not stopped operating since Tuesday."

"Crews have been heading from Athens to replace their colleagues... they are working in very tough conditions amid extreme heat," added Artopios.

As per the spokesperson, on Monday, hundreds of people were also evacuated from areas other than the southeast coastal resort areas, while seven firefighting aircraft would continue to battle the flames until nightfall.

"For the next few weeks, we must be on constant alert. We are at war. We will rebuild what we lost, we will compensate those who were hurt," Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told parliament, as quoted by Reuters.

"The climate crisis is already here, it will manifest itself everywhere in the Mediterranean with greater disasters," he said.

This comes after around 19,000 people were also evacuated from the island of Rhodes, which was also engulfed by fire. A lot of people were forced to flee their hotels as the wildfires continued to spread from the centre of the Greek island.

For days now, Greece has been battling with searing heat as temperatures exceed 40C across the nation, and fires continue to blaze for nearly a week in some areas.

On Monday, a planned national holiday was cancelled "in view of the extraordinary conditions prevailing in the country due to the fires", said the Greek presidency.

Greece's Emergency Communications Service on Sunday evening had issued evacuation orders for various areas of Corfu.

People living in the areas of Santa, Megoula, Porta, Palia, Perithia and Sinies on Corfu island were asked to evacuate. A government official said that the boats in the area were dispatched to evacuate residents by sea.&nbsp;

Corfu and Rhodes, which have been battling wildfires, are popular tourist destinations which are thronged by hundreds of thousands of Brits every year.

"We are in the seventh day of the fire and it hasn't been controlled," said Rhodes Deputy Mayor Konstantinos Taraslias, while speaking to state broadcaster ERT. Tourists were forced to spend their nights on the floors of the airport, waiting for repatriation flights.

Ryanair stated that its flights to and from Rhodes were normally operating. Chief Financial Officer Neil Sorahan said that the situation was being monitored by the airline on Monday.

"We have a lot of customers there who want to get home. We're not going to leave them behind so we'll travel back in and out. It's not necessary at this period in time (to put on more flights), we're letting people book onto earlier flights," he said.&nbsp;

Greece is struggling to contain wildfires west of Athens as they continued to rage on the fifth day on Friday (July 21). The country is experiencing another heatwave. Reuters quoted fire service official who said that concerns have grown after the fire severely damaged more than 100 houses and businesses. Another fire near Athens was put out earlier by the authorities.

Relief measures for afflicted households were announced by the government on Friday. These included financial aid and subsidies to rent houses.

Reuters spoke with a 63-year-old Dimitris Michaelos whose home was saved. He refused to leave his home when authorities asked hundreds of residents to evacuate.

The programme involved creating and maintaining anti-fire zones, increase in patrolling and exercises to boost fire readiness. An EU-coordinated “pre-positioning project”, where firefighters from EU member states are stationed on rotation inside the country throughout the summer is also in effect.

European countries are taking steps to help Greece battle the flames. On Friday, reinforcements were to arrive from countries like Cyprus, France, Israel, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, and Italy. The reinforcements include firefighters and aircraft.

The Greek authorities have appealed people to remain on guard. Risk of wildfires remains high in the coming days. In addition, high temperatures are forecast following on from previous heatwave.

Local reports published late Monday quoted the Canadian Armed Forces as saying that the first troops to help in British Columbia's wildfire fight have arrived in the province. Reports mentioned that blazes have burned 1.2 million hectares of forest in the province so far this year, far above the 10-year average of 76,000 hectares.&nbsp;

Canada: British Columbia seeks help of military, foreign countries to tackle record wildfires

Electric ‘noses’ are being installed in Germany to help sniff out forest fires at the earliest stage of smouldering and prevent major disasters. These devices come fitted with ultra-sensitive sensors and powered with AI learning, which can differentiate between smoke of various types and alert authorities accordingly.&nbsp;

For instance, the device, powered by solar electricity,&nbsp;can differentiate between smoke emanating from a diesel truck passing nearby or a legit forest fire.

<h2>Trials ongoing in Germany</h2>

A trial is currently underway in the heart of Eberswalde forest northeast of Berlin, a hotspot for wildfires in the country. More than 400 sensors have been installed in the area, or one device per hectare (2.5 acres).&nbsp;

These devices were created two years ago by Berlin-based startup Dryad Networks. Its co-founder Juergen Mueller says the ‘electric nose’ can detect and help put out the fire within 10-15 minutes of initial smouldering.

"In 10, 15 minutes we can detect an incipient fire before it becomes an open fire," he said, adding that it was way faster than traditional systems involving monitoring through cameras.

He says that as soon as a wildfire is detected, the data is immediately relayed to a cloud-based monitoring system and local authorities are alerted.

<h2>10 nations experimenting with the device</h2>

As more and more nations experience a surge in deadly wildfire incidents owing to climate change, the makers of the device believe their sales would shoot up. Dryad Networks said 10 countries including the United States, Greece and Spain were already experimenting with the device.

<h2>‘Helpful in preventing disaster’</h2>

Raimund Engel, Brandenburg's forest fire protection officer, has hailed the devices as a useful addition to the visual detection method currently in practice.

"Because of climate change" the weather conditions in the forest-rich area are "very similar to some Mediterranean regions", Engel said, "with periods of drought and temperatures that sometimes reach up to 40 degree&nbsp;Celsius”

"The faster we detect the fire, the quicker firefighters can be on the scene,” he added, acknowledging that early intervention can greatly help authorities to prevent disasters before they rage out of control.

Fernando Clavijo, president of the Canary Islands, said at least 13 houses have been destroyed since Saturday as the fire has advanced. “The fire advanced very quickly,” said Clavijo, adding that the “fire is out of control”.&nbsp;

He also went on to attribute this rapid advancement of the blaze to “the wind, the climate conditions as well as the heatwave that we are living through.”&nbsp;

“There has been some resistance by local people to leaving their homes, but I appeal to people to be responsible,” Clavijo told reporters.&nbsp;

Local officials have also reported the forced evacuation of 50 people from Tenerife, one of the eight Canary Islands since the wildfire broke out on Saturday and destroyed about 60 hectares of land in the region. &nbsp;

Devyn Gale, a&nbsp;19-year-old firefighter, has been killed in western Canada as the country battles its worst season of wildfires on record.&nbsp;Gale was struck by a falling tree while working in a remote area near the town of Revelstoke, British Columbia.

Officials said a female firefighter had been found caught under a tree after being separated from the rest of her team while clearing an area.&nbsp;Gale was airlifted to hospital but died on Thursday.

It marks the first death on the ground since the start of wildfires in Canada,&nbsp;and reportedly the first in British Columbia since 2015.

In a tribute on Instagram, identifying Gale as the woman killed, her brother Nolan Gale described her as an 'amazing sister'.

"She was so kind and thoughtful. She was careful, considerate, hardworking," he wrote.

"I'm grateful for everything she's done for me and others, completely out of kindness with no expectation for reciprocation."

According to the British Columbia General Employees' Union, the woman died outside the town of Revelstoke in British Columbia.

"It is with heavy hearts that our union mourns the loss of one of our BCGEU family," it said.

<h2>Trudeau reacts, sends condolences</h2>

Canada PM Justin Trudeau said the news was "heartbreaking". He thanked Canadian firefighters for their courage.

"We must never forget the risks these heroes take every time they run toward the danger," Trudeau tweeted.

Fresh evacuations were ordered in British Columbia recently due to blazes. The province requested the help of 1000 more international firefighters.&nbsp;

"It is very, very challenging across Canada and across the globe right now to secure additional firefighting capacity," BC Fire Department spokesman Cliff Chapman said Thursday.&nbsp;

"This is a very dangerous job," he went on. "With the conditions we are in, it makes it all that much more dangerous for our staff who are working 14, 16, 20-hour days."

Sarah Budd with the British Columbia Wildfire Service said the weather will remain hot and dry for the foreseeable future.

"We're not expecting any reprieve from the weather," Budd said.

Wildfires have already burnt nine million hectares so far. This is 11 times the average for the last decade. The annual record set in 1989 has been surpassed.

What is unusual for Canada is that both sides of the country are burning at the same time.

This time, some provinces which are unaccustomed to fire have also been affected. This includes Quebec. Here, more than a million hectares have burned.

Canada is warming faster that the rest of the planet due to its geography. The country has been confronted with extreme weather events whose intensity as well as frequency gave increased. Climate Change is being said to be the reason.

Smoke from the fires has polluted the air in Canada and neighbouring United States, affecting more than 100 million people, at times disrupting flights and forcing the cancellation of outdoor events.&nbsp;

Under a&nbsp;joint project, the Imperial College London and Empa, the material science unit of Swiss Federal Laboratories, have developed a remotely controlled flyer that is capable of enduring the temperatures of a gas flame, simulating the conditions of a forest fire or building-based disaster.

<h2>FireDrone: Helping hand of firefighters?</h2>

The prototype drone, called FireDrone, could be flown into burning buildings or woodland to assess the hazards and provide crucial first-hand data from danger zones. The data would then be sent to first responders to help them in emergency response. 
 
Principal Investigator Professor Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London and Head of the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics at Empa, said: “Until they enter the danger zone, firefighters can’t be certain of what or who they’ll find, and what challenges they’ll encounter.

<h2>Nature-inspired FireDrones</h2>

In the past, drones have been used in firefighting to take aerial footage, host dire hoses up skyscrapers, or drop fire retardants in remote areas to slow the spread of wildfires. However, current drones developed for firefighting are unable to fly much closer to burning material as their frames start to melt and their electronics fail.&nbsp;

To find a solution to this problem, researchers looked to nature for inspiration to devise a means of maintaining a functioning internal temperature in extreme conditions.&nbsp;

“Deploying robots in extreme environments provides great benefits to reducing risks to human lives, and who better to look to than animals that have evolved their own ways of adapting to these extremes using inspiration from how animals keep cool in the heat,” said Kovac.

Animals like penguins, arctic foxes, and spittlebugs, which live in extreme temperatures, have appropriate layers of fat and fur. Some animals even produce their own layers of thermo-regulating material that allow them to thrive in extreme conditions.&nbsp;

To create a fire-resistant drone, researchers use the same concept and created a protective structural shell made of lightweight, thermally super-insulating materials like glass fibres and polyimide aerogel. They also coated this with super-reflecting aluminium to reflect heat.&nbsp;

Within the protective exoskeleton, the researchers placed temperature-sensitive components, such as regular and infrared cameras, CO2 sensors, video transmitters, flight controllers, batteries, and radio receivers. They also used the release and evaporation of gas from the CO2 sensors to build a cooling system to keep temperatures down.

<h2>Pilot flight of FireDrone</h2>

The researchers flew the drone in temperature-controlled chambers before exposing it to open flames at a firefighter training facility, showing that it could tolerate temperatures of up to 200 degree Celsius for 10 minutes.&nbsp;

Cold temperatures can be just as punishing for electronics, so the team took to a glacier tunnel in Switzerland to test performance in an icy environment. The insulation kept the extreme cold from penetrating the components, while the heat generated by the whirring motors and electronics kept the batteries within their operating range.

The tests confirmed FireDrone’s potential to withstand dangerously hot and cold situations, but it is just a prototype so far. Before the drone can zoom into burning buildings, and search freezing crevasses for injured ice climbers, the team hopes to improve its versatility and equip it with additional sensors so it can feed more essential information back.&nbsp;

“The application of drones is often limited by environmental factors like temperature. We demonstrate a way to overcome this and are convinced our findings will help to unleash the future power of drones for extreme environments,” said Kovac.

One such video by a Seattle resident Angel Robertson has gained more than 600,000 views.&nbsp;

"It works extremely well and will save your life with really smoky days," says Robertson in the video.&nbsp;

"It does a lot better than the normal air filters," she adds.

<h2>Do these air filters actually work?</h2>

Public health experts say that these DIY air purifiers do work and that they are highly effective at removing particles from the air.

As per Petri Kalliomäki, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Maryland’s School of Public Health, air filters made using the Corsi-Rosenthal method provide clean air at a high delivery rate. They can even be used to purify air against pollen and viruses.

So far in 2023, Canada has seen larger wildfires than any previous year at this point in the season, with more than three million hectares burned. Tens of thousands of people have evacuated as a result.

On TikTok, a video already viewed almost 20,000 times, claims the fires in Nova Scotia were set "on purpose to push a climate change agenda."

One article speculates that since 90 per cent of Alberta's fires could be "human-caused," there is a possibility that "ecoterrorists" may be behind them.&nbsp;

As wildfires spread in Quebec, some questioned how all the blazes could have started on the same day. One Facebook video with more than one million views blames "a terrorist attack" for the flames.

But Karine Pelletier from the province's Forest Fire Protection Agency said the causes are still under investigation.&nbsp;

"There are a lot which are caused by humans, but these are almost always accidents," she said, noting that recent lightning strikes were to blame for many of Quebec’s wildfires. &nbsp;

Alberta Wildfire told AFP that unless lightning is involved, a blaze is classified as human-caused. This does not exclusively mean arson.

"It could be related to general causes, including agriculture, forest industry, powerlines, or oil and gas industry, railroad or residential wildfires," said spokeswoman Melissa Story.&nbsp;

Nova Scotia officials have also said they are still investigating the origins of the province’s fires, which are presumed to be human-caused.&nbsp;

During Australia's Black Summer of 2020, social media users misleadingly cited arson statistics from a prior year to blame unconnected crimes for the season’s bushfires. &nbsp;

In California in 2021, arsonists were behind several wildfires -- but there is no evidence they were pushing a climate change agenda, as some people claimed online.&nbsp;

Chris Russill, a professor at Carleton University studying climate change communication, said the ecoterrorist theory may have once had some basis in truth, but "then that gets exaggerated in its importance or significance."&nbsp;

Such is the case in Canada, where some social media users are citing genuine reports of suspicious fires to spin conspiracy theories about unrelated events and locations.&nbsp;

<h2>Climate Change</h2>

On top of purported vigilantism, some falsely theorize that the Canadian government is starting wildfires, either to advance its climate change policies or to force citizens into cities where it will be easier to impose "climate lockdowns."&nbsp;

Russill tied those fears to Canada's signing of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, which raised alarm about the impending climate crisis.&nbsp;

As the Liberal government implemented stricter climate caps and taxes over the past decade, Russill said people in Canada's natural resource industries have grown defensive. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"This grievance isn't actually always about a global fear of shadowy UN elites or eco-vigilantes, even though that's how this gets taken up and incubated in this sort of narrative," he said. "It's expressing the fact that the relationship to the federal government and the provinces has become more insistent and more forceful."

Millions of people across North America are facing high-risk air quality warnings due to ongoing wildfires in Canada. On Tuesday (June 6), with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 222 on the 0-500 scale, New York, as per IQAir, was officially the most polluted major city in the world. As per the Swiss air quality company at around 1:25 am, AQI in New York was higher than those in the Indian capital Delhi and Iraq's Baghdad.

Smoke from the Canada fires has covered major cities in Ontario and Quebec, including Toronto and its surrounding areas. The smoke has even reached as far as New York City and Connecticut, where the air quality has been classified as "unhealthy."&nbsp;

<h2>Where is the smoke coming from?</h2>

The majority of the smoke is originating from Quebec, where, as per Reuters, more than 150 wildfires are currently burning. Ottawa, the Canadian capital, received the strongest warning from Environment Canada, declaring the air quality as a "very high risk" to people's health.&nbsp;

<h2>Air quality and the risky areas</h2>

In Toronto and its surroundings, air, as per BBC, has been classified as "high-risk" areas. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified the air quality in many parts of the northeastern US as "unhealthy," particularly for individuals with respiratory issues.&nbsp;

The advisories stretch from New York City and Connecticut to Boston, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC.&nbsp;

Some regions, such as eastern Pennsylvania, New York, and New England, have experienced an Air Quality Index surpassing 200, indicating "very unhealthy" conditions for everyone.&nbsp;

The deteriorating air quality has led to the relocation of individuals with asthma and respiratory issues in the Atikamekw community of Opitciwan, located 350 km north of Montreal in Quebec.&nbsp;

<h2>An active wildfire season</h2>

BBC reports that Canada is experiencing a more active wildfire season than usual, with federal officials warning that this summer may see the country's largest fires yet due to the dry and hot conditions forecasted.&nbsp;

The fires across the country have already burned over 3.3 million hectares of land, which is 12 times the 10-year average for this time of year.&nbsp;

Evacuations have taken place across the country, including in Quebec, where approximately 200,000 hectares have been burned so far.&nbsp;Major fires are also raging in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and the Northwest Territories.

So far, in 2023, there have been 422 fires in the Quebec province. These fires have affected 226,084 hectares.

<h2>Health risks&nbsp;</h2>

Exposure to wildfire smoke can have various health effects, according to experts.

Speaking to BBC, professor Matthew Adams, the director of the Centre of Urban Environments at the University of Toronto, explained that the immediate effects of inhaling wildfire smoke include shortness of breath, elevated pulse, chest pain, and inflammation in the eyes, nose, and throat.&nbsp;

"On these elevated air pollution days, we'll see an increased number of visits to hospital," Adams told BBC, adding that this will be particularly true for individuals with pre-existing respiratory diseases.&nbsp;

Adams also highlights the long-term health issues associated with wildfire smoke, such as cancer and lung disease, especially for those residing in areas prone to frequent forest fires.&nbsp;

The smoke contains small particles that can enter the bloodstream and other parts of the body, potentially causing DNA mutations and other health problems. Studies have indicated that prolonged exposure to wildfire smoke can also impact pregnant women and their unborn children.&nbsp;

Adams suggested that individuals in cities located far from the fires but under air advisories should limit outdoor exercise and stay indoors to reduce exposure. While&nbsp;those in areas closer to the fires should wear N95 masks outside to minimise inhalation of smoke particles. Additionally, he said installing HEPA filters and improving ventilation inside homes can also help.

On Friday, a coastal city in Quebec ordered some 10,000 of its residents to evacuate their homes. The wildfires are spreading in eastern Canada and firefighting resources are already stretched tackling the fires across the country.

The wildfires have scorched more than 2.7 million hectares of land so far this year across Canada. This is equal to more than five million football fields, according to federal Emergency Preparedness Minister Bill Blair. That's more than ten times the average area typically burned by this time of year over the past decade.

Blair said in a briefing on Friday morning that there were 214 fires burning across Canada out of which 93 are out of control. 29,000 people have been evacuated.

Wildfires are common in Canada's western provinces, but this year the eastern province of Nova Scotia is reeling from its worst-ever wildfire season.

The province on the Atlantic coast has had nearly 200 wildfires. These have burned more than 19,000 hectares and have displaced more than 25,000 people. For comparison, there were 152 wildfires that burned 3380 hectares in the year 2022.

<h2>Evacuation in Quebec</h2>

Stephane Lauzon, a member of Parliament from Quebec, told a news conference in Ottawa that as many as 10,000 residents, or one-third of the population of Sept Iles would be displaced.

Steeve Beaupre, mayor of Sept Iles on St Lawrence River declared a local state of emergency. He announced a mandatory evacuation as wildfires nearby "advanced very quickly" overnight.

In the morning, the residents were asked to vacate their homes by 4 pm local time (2100 GMT).

Earlier, on Thursday, 500 residents from Chapais in the north of the province were evacuated.

"The situation is quickly changing in Quebec," Lauzon said, adding that about 100 fires, "many more than yesterday," were burning in the province, including about 20 out of control.

Wildfires started after major flareups in the west of the country in May, mainly in the Prairies provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan.
