The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the risk of the spread of Monkeypox in Europe, including Russia, is high.

"According to the WHO assessment, at the regional level, the risk in the WHO European Region is high over reports about the widespread outbreak which engulfed several previously untouched countries and some atypical cases," the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Melita Vujnovic told Russian news agency Sputnik.

"The WHO recommends that all the countries should make every effort to register new cases and trace contacts to control this outbreak and prevent its further spread", Vujnovic added.

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that is usually transmitted to people from wild animals and is endemic in some African countries.

The disease can be transmitted through body fluids, respiratory droplets and other contaminated materials.

The illness usually results in fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes.

An outbreak of monkeypox began in May in non-endemic countries, with over 5,100 cases confirmed in humans in 51 nations from May 13 to July 1, according to the WHO.

Monkeypox cases in Europe have tripled in the last two weeks, the WHO`s Europe chief warned on Friday as he urged countries to do more to ensure the rare disease does not become entrenched on the continent.

"The WHO European Region represents almost 90 per cent of all laboratory-confirmed and globally reported cases since mid-May, and since my last statement on 15 June, six new countries and areas - taking the total to 31 - have reported monkeypox cases, with new cases tripling over the same period to over 4,500 laboratory-confirmed cases across the Region", said WHO Europe chief Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge.

He said most cases reported so far have been among people between 21 and 40 years of age, and 99 per cent have been male, with the majority of those for whom there was information being men who have sex with men.

The WHO official also stressed that there is simply no room for complacency -- especially right there in the European Region with its fast-moving outbreak that with every hour, day and week is extending its reach into previously unaffected areas.

"Compounding the challenge is the stigmatization of men who have sex with men in several countries. Many may simply choose not to present to health authorities, fearful of possible consequences. We know from our lessons in dealing with HIV how stigma further fuels outbreaks and epidemics, but allowing our fear of creating stigma to prevent us from acting may be just as damaging", he said.&nbsp;

"Today, I am intensifying my call for governments and civil society to scale up efforts in the coming weeks and months to prevent monkeypox from establishing itself across a growing geographical area. Urgent and coordinated action is imperative if we are to turn a corner in the race to reverse the ongoing spread of this disease," WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Henri Kluge said.

Majority of the countries where monkeypox cases have reached three figure mark are in Europe.

Earlier this week, WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that he was 'concerned' about 'sustained transmission' of monkeypox virus.

"I am concerned about sustained transmission because it would suggest that the virus is establishing itself and it could move into high-risk groups including children, the immunocompromised and pregnant women," &nbsp;he said. He was talking with reporters.

Last week the UN health agency convened an emergency committee of experts to decide if monkeypox constitutes a so-called Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), the highest alarm that the WHO can sound.&nbsp;

WHO calls for 'urgent' action in Europe to contain monkeypox spread

As COVID-19 cases tripled in the past month, calling on countries in Europe the World Health Organization said on Thursday that it expected "high levels" of the virus this summer. The milder but more contagious Covid subvariant BA.5 is spreading across Europe. As per WHO data, the 53 countries in the WHO European region are currently reporting almost 500,000 cases per day, this is up from 150,000 per day at the end of May. The present death rate in Europe is 500 per day or nearly the same as it will be in the summer of 2020. 4,000 to 5,000 fatalities per day were recorded for the majority of the winter.

Speaking to AFP, WHO Europe regional director Hans Kluge said: "As countries across the European region have lifted the social measures that were previously in place, the virus will transmit at high levels over the summer".

"This virus won't go away just because countries stop looking for it. It's still spreading, it's still changing, and it's still taking lives."

The countries with the greatest incidence rates were Austria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, and Portugal, however, instances have been increasing in practically all of the other countries in the region.

Emphasising that WHO's suggestions still stand, he said "We hope that the strong vaccine programmes most member states have implemented together with prior infection will mean that we avoid the more severe consequences that we saw earlier in the pandemic."

WHO had earlier advised people with respiratory symptoms to isolate themselves, stay up to date on their vaccines, and wear masks in crowded venues.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said that the rapidly spreading monkeypox does not represent a ‘global health emergency at this stage’ but called for close surveillance.

At least 3,000 monkeypox cases across more than 50 countries have been identified since early May, WHO data states.

The WHO convened its emergency committee to determine the level of threat monkeypox currently poses to the international community.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreysus convened the committee on Thursday after expressing concern about the epidemic of monkeypox in countries that haven’t previously reported the disease.

In a statement on Saturday, the WHO said that many aspects of the outbreak were “unusual” and acknowledged that monkeypox — which is endemic in some African countries — has been neglected for years.

“While a few members expressed differing views, the committee resolved by consensus to advise the WHO director-general that at this stage the outbreak should be determined to not constitute” a global health emergency, WHO said in a statement.

Declaring monkeypox to be a global emergency would mean the UN health agency considers the outbreak to be an extraordinary event and that the disease is at risk of spreading across even more borders&nbsp; It would also give monkeypox the same distinction as the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing effort to eradicate polio.

While publicly the World Health Organisation (WHO) maintains that ‘all hypotheses remain on the table’ about the origins of Covid, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of WHO had recently confided to a senior European politician that the most likely explanation was a catastrophic accident at a laboratory in Wuhan, where infections first spread during late 2019, as reported by Daily Mail.

In his opening remark at the Member State Information Session on COVID-19 and other issues, Tedros said, “ It has now been two-and-a-half years since we first identified cases of this novel coronavirus. We do not yet have the answers as to where it came from or how it entered the human population.”

A team of 27 experts was set up by the WHO last year to produce a new global framework for studies into emerging pathogens with the potential of sparking epidemics or pandemics.

In its first preliminary report, the so-called Scientific Advisory Group for the Origins of Novel Pathogens (SAGO) stressed that it had no conclusive findings on the origins of the virus behind the worst global pandemic in a century.

“All hypotheses must remain on the table until we have evidence that enables us to rule certain hypotheses in or out. The only way this scientific work can progress successfully is with full collaboration from all countries, including China, where the first cases of SARS-CoV-2 were reported,” Tedros added.

The number of cases however, has seen a fall. 3.2 million new cases were reported last week. This has been as per the trend seen since January when there was a peak in infections.

However, West Asia and Southeast Asia saw a spike in number of cases by 58 per cent and 33 per cent respectively.

Because many countries have reduced surveillance and testing, we know this number is under-reported, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said earlier this week.

He said that there was nothing such as an acceptable level of COVID deaths especially since the world now has vaccines, medicines and diagnostics against the virus.

While many rich countries in Europe and North America have mostly dropped their virus restrictions, China's extreme Covid-19 policies have meant more mass testing, quarantines and sequestering of anyone who was in contact with a case.

China's capital put school back online this week in one of its major districts amid a new Covid-19 outbreak linked to a nightclub.

Residents in Beijing are still undergoing regular testing mostly every other day and must wear masks and swipe a mobile phone app to enter public places and facilitate case tracing.

The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating allegations that the monkeypox virus is present in the semen of patients, with the goal of determining if the disease may be transferred sexually, according to a WHO official.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday warned that there was a 'real' risk of monkeypox 'becoming established' in countries where it is non-endemic. The warning from the agency came when more than a thousand cases have now been confirmed in such countries.

"More than 1,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox have now been reported to WHO from 29 countries that are not endemic for the disease," Tedros said.

The spread is highly concerning because multiple cases and outbreaks mostly occur in west and central Africa. Occasionally it spreads elsewhere.&nbsp;

As per WHO, the 780 figure, for cases from May 13 to Thursday, was probably an underestimate due to limited epidemiological and laboratory information.&nbsp;

Most of the monkeypox cases have been reported in European countries. The WHO listed the non-endemic countries reporting the most cases as Britain (207), Spain (156), Portugal (138), Canada (58) and Germany (57).&nbsp;

Apart from the mentioned countries, cases have also been reported in Argentina, Australia, Morocco and the United Arab Emirates.&nbsp;

WHO said: "It is highly likely that other countries will identify cases and there will be further spread of the virus."&nbsp;

The WHO said, "Some countries are reporting that new generations of cases are no longer appearing only among known contacts of previously confirmed cases, suggesting that chains of transmission are being missed through undetected circulation of the virus."&nbsp;

"Although the current risk to human health and for the general public remains low, the public health risk could become high if this virus exploits the opportunity to establish itself in non-endemic countries as a widespread human pathogen," it added.&nbsp;

"WHO assesses the risk at the global level as moderate considering this is the first time that many monkeypox cases and clusters are reported concurrently in non-endemic and endemic countries." it further added.&nbsp;
