Israeli occupation forces have detained 68 Palestinians workers at the Cross-Samaria Checkpoint, from the occupied West Bank, after they were found hiding inside a garbage truck near an Israeli military roadblock while attempting to reach their workplace in Israel. The workers were compelled to opt for this dangerous and degrading method of transportation after the Israeli occupation forces did not allow them to return to work, as the West Bank is pushed towards economic collapse. The workers were found in a state of severe exhaustion, while some had lost consciousness due to overcrowding and suffocation. “In a security inspection, about 40 Palestinians, illegal residents, were discovered as they were trying to infiltrate into the centre of the country,” said the Israeli occupation force in a statement. The truck driver, a resident of Kfar Qassem, was arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt. According to Israel's Channel 12 News, the detainees were allegedly headed for cities including Netanya, Tel Aviv and Rishon Lezion. For decades, Israeli colonies were built with the labour of Palestinian workers. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has revoked nearly all work permits for West Bank Palestinians, trapping hundreds of thousands of workers in their homes without income. The exclusion has devastated the economic landscape of the West Bank. Humanitarian organisations have highlighted the "unbearable living conditions" in the West Bank, including extreme poverty and lack of basic services, which often drives individuals to dangerous routes for maintaining their livelihood. Workers call it a slow collapse, multiplied by the lack of intervention by labour institutions or the absence of alternative and emergency support.

Tensions are escalating in the West Bank as settler outposts continue to expand, often following a “build first, legalise later” approach. The growing presence has been linked to repeated violence and rising fear among Palestinian communities, with many reportedly being forced off their land. Despite increasing international criticism, settlement expansion shows little sign of slowing, reshaping realities on the ground.

West Bank Tensions Grow As Settlement Expansion Continues

The Israeli security cabinet secretly approved the legalization of over 30 new settler outposts and farms in the occupied West Bank last month, according to three Israeli sources familiar with the decision.

Homes and vehicles have reportedly been torched, while incidents described as “revenge attacks” and mob assaults are increasing. The surge is adding another layer of tension to an already volatile situation, with fears that the cycle of violence could spiral further.

Bedouin families in the occupied West Bank are dismantling their homes and fleeing their villages after what they describe as relentless harassment and intimidation by Israeli settlers. In Ras Ein al-Auja, near Jericho, residents say pressure escalated sharply after settlers established an outpost just meters from their homes. The United Nations reports thousands of Palestinians have been displaced by settler violence and movement restrictions since October 2023, raising concerns that expanding settlements are entrenching Israeli control over large parts of the West Bank.

West Bank Violence: Families Flee as Violence Mounts Near Ramallah; UN Reports Sharp Rise

Senior far-right Israeli minister Bezalel Smotrich has proposed policies to promote Palestinian emigration from the occupied West Bank and Gaza, framing it as a long-term solution while also advocating stronger Israeli control and the scrapping of the Oslo Accords. Critics say such steps could amount to de facto annexation and forced displacement.

Smotrich described this move as a “long‑term solution” to the conflict and said Israel must eliminate what he termed an “Arab terror state,” even as critics argue the measures effectively amount to de facto annexation and ethnic displacement.

The measure, officially called "Settlement of Land Title process, allows allows the Israeli government to systematically map and register ownership of land in the West Bank, specifically targeting Area C, which constitutes about 60% of the territory. According to Israel's foreign ministry, the measure, approved late on Sunday, would enable "transparent and thorough clarification of rights to resolve legal disputes" and was needed after unlawful land registration in areas controlled by the Palestinian Authority. Several Arab nations, including Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan, criticised the move as illegal under international law. The measure is "aimed at imposing a new legal and administrative reality in the occupied West Bank" that would undermine peace efforts in the region, Saudi Arabia's foreign affairs ministry said in a statement. "We reiterate that annexation is illegal under international law. We call on Israel to reverse this decision," he added.
