In the wake of setbacks faced in the ongoing war against Ukraine, Russia has decided to make “major changes” to its military structure. Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu informed that the proposed changes to its armed forces will take place from 2023 to 2026. "Only by strengthening the key structural components of the armed forces is it possible to guarantee the military security of the state and protect new entities and critical facilities of the Russian Federation," Shoigu was quoted as saying on Tuesday, reports Reuters news agency.
Depression hits you when you least expect it. We have seen it most common in people who you’d think are living their best lives. We are talking about Bollywood star Hrithik Roshan who is easily one of the most good looking men in the Hindi film industry and who enjoys a large fan base. In a recent interview, Hrithik revealed that he almost slipped into depression before his film ‘War’ came out and became a massive hit.

‘War’ was released in 2019 and became a huge hit. Directed by Siddharth Anand, the YRF production starred Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff and Vaani Kapoor in pivotal roles. One of the year’s highest grossing films and a high point in Hrithik’s career, ‘War’ was important for the actor – professionally and personally. Shooting for the film, Hrithik reveals it was a “challenging time” filming it.

In a conversation with his fitness trainer Kris Gethin, Hrithik Roshan said, “I feel as light and as fast as our last transformation. I thought I was dying when I was doing War. I wasn’t prepared for the film and I was up against a really big challenge. I was trying to achieve perfection for which I wasn’t ready. After the film, I went into adrenaline fatigue. For 3-4 months, I couldn’t train, wasn’t feeling good. I was almost on the verge of depression. I was completely lost and that’s when I knew I needed to make a change in my life.”

Hrithik trained like crazy for the film. His trainer recalled that the actor “didn’t take a day off in seven months”.

I was completely lost and that’s when I knew I needed to make a change in my life.” Hrithik trained like crazy for the film. His trainer recalled that the actor “didn’t take a day off in seven months”.
Better late than never. Governments around the world are taking steps to tackle the risks of allowing the development and spread of killer robots, technically known as Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS).

LAWS differ from the vast array of weapons in today’s arsenals – from intercontinental ballistic missiles to the drones used to devastating effect by Russia and Ukraine – because they can make decisions on what or whom to strike, who lives and who dies, without human intervention.

Artificial intelligence, facial recognition and millions of lines of codes will take the place of human operators. It is a concept in sharp contrast to the way the United States used Predator drones in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The United States, the world’s biggest maker and exporter of weapons, has no LAWS in its arsenal, according to the Pentagon. But it does have a definition: “weapons systems that, once activated, can select and engage targets without further intervention by a human operator.”

The pros and cons of killer robots have been debated in military academies and among arms control experts for almost two decades but the topic won little public attention and scant news coverage despite the efforts of advocacy groups such as stopkillerrobots.org and humanrightswatch.org.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has been outspoken on the subject: “Autonomous machines with the power and discretion to select targets and take lives without human involvement are politically unacceptable, morally repugnant and should be prohibited by international law,” he has said.

Such statements produced few headlines. One reason: Unlike the years-long campaign that led to the 1997 treaty banning anti-personnel mines, the anti-LAWS movement has lacked celebrity backers. The mine ban’s vocal supporters included the late Princess Diana and the actress Angelina Jolie.

There are signs now that a movement to ban or at least regulate killer robots is finally getting traction. Last October, the topic was formally raised at the UN General Assembly for the first time when 70 states agreed on a resolution calling for internationally agreed rules and limits on autonomous weapons systems.

There is no full list of participants yet. The government says the summit will be a platform for governments, industry, civil society, academia and think tanks to forge a common understanding of the opportunities, dilemmas and vulnerabilities associated with military AI.

Russia: From Ice soldiers to Z symbol, a different kind of Christmas in Siberia's Chita, IN PICS

Kyiv's Independence Square, which formerly housed some of the most spectacular decorations, is now down to just one piece. A beautiful Christmas tree. The main square in Kyiv, Maidan Nezalezhnosti, is commonly referred to as Independence Square. The Square is not what it was in earlier years. In a recent Twitter post, one user shared images of Christmas trees in Kyiv from the years 2019, 2020, 2021, and 2022. Since the distinctions are so obvious, little attention is needed.

Russian and Ukrainian soldiers are fighting in the war that still wages on in Eastern Europe, but people are still optimistic that it will all soon come to an end. However, in the interim, Ukrainians will need to celebrate this holiday season in whatever small way they can.

Next to the Saint Sophia Cathedral, the sole 12-metre-high artificial Christmas tree which stands tall in the heart of Ukraine is decorated with white doves to symbolise peace. Topping the tree is the country's coat of arm, the trident.

The Christmas tree was set up on Kyiv's Saint Sophia Square during the blackout hours prior to its inauguration ceremony on 19 December. Drones attacked the Ukrainian capital on Monday morning. The Kyiv city authorities urged people to heed to air alerts. The Christmas tree at Saint Sophia Square was unveiled in a low-key ceremony. Celebrations in Mykolaiv were low-key as well. A Christmas tree made of camouflage nets draws a small crowd amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

"Russians try to steal normal life away from our citizens, but we won’t give them a chance to steal the biggest holidays –- the New Year and Christmas -- from our children," the city's mayor Vitali Klitschko said when unveiling the tree.

The mayor of Kyiv said that hesitation on the part of city hall was there as a result of weeks of Russian strikes on energy infrastructure that had worn down the Ukrainian power grid. Despite it all, the city hall adapted and powered the tree's fairy lights with a diesel generator. They reused some decorations from previous years.

Millions have been forced into the cold and darkness as winter approaches.
