WION’s Anas Mallick reports from ground zero as the Russia-Ukraine war completes one year on February 24th.

Lviv, Ukraine after one year of war

Amidst blaring air raid sirens and fears of a Russian offensive, US President Joe Biden reached Ukraine's Kyiv in an unannounced visit.

The US has said it is “very concerned” China will soon supply Russia with lethal arms to help in its war against Ukraine after a fraught meeting between the two sides’ top diplomats that addressed multiple Sino-American tensions.

China to supply lethal aid to Russia?

Poland’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lukasz Jasina said that only Russian President Vladimir Putin can end the war against Ukraine, but quickly added that the hopes of achieving peace in the near term was impossible.

Speaking to WION, Jasina expressed hope that Russia will withdraw its troops and come back to the discussion table for achieving lasting peace.

“Only one person… and that is Putin, the one who started it can end this war. But we believe Russia won't do it and we don't believe that they believe in peace and talks. And this war will not end very quickly,” he said.

“We hope that this war ends quickly and Russia withdraws its troops. But we have no idea what will happen in the next few years. The only thing we know is that this war will not end quickly and there will many victims,” he added.

The spokesperson further said that Poland is arming itself to prepare for any unexpected outcome, adding that “when you want peace, you prepare for war”.

“Nobody, except US and China, is prepared to fight with Russia alone. That's why NATO was created…to stand against the aggressor if that aggressor tries to cross our borders. There will be new tanks and we hope to organise our fleets as this will be helpful for us. Russia is very close from here and we also have Belarus, which is being used by Russians as their base. There is a big plan of arming our country in coming years.”

Ever since the Russia-Ukraine war unfolded last year, millions of Ukrainians have fled their homes to neighbouring countries seeking safety, protection and assistance.

When asked how Poland is coping with the influx of refugees from battered Ukraine, he said that their country has been giving priority to women and children and added that they are finding ways to help them.

“Women and children from Ukraine will be accepted here and we are finding ways to help them. There were more than five million people crossing the Polish-Ukraine border, but now it's fewer because many have moved to other western countries. We have got 2 million Ukrainians here at the moment,” Jasina said.

White House spokesman John Kirby said that more than 30,000 mercenaries, who were fighting under the Wagner Group, have lost their lives or have been injured since Russia waged war against Ukraine. Kirby added that significant losses have been borne by the group in recent weeks, with around 9,000 fighters losing their lives in action. He added that people were heavily recruited by Wagner from Russian prisons and the most casualties were untrained convicts.

Even after so many casualties, Wagner claims to have made gains near the city of Bakhmut. Around the city, the troops have engaged in some of the fiercest fighting of the war, with Wagner mercenaries getting heavily engaged in efforts of Russia to capture the city, as per media reports.

Ukraine has accused privately-owned French retailer, Auchan, for becoming a "full-fledged weapon of Russian aggression" in Ukraine. He criticized the retailer for supplying goods to the Russian army and helping Moscow in its ongoing onslaught on Kyiv.

In a tweet Friday, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba wrote, "Last year, I urged the world to boycott Auchan for failing to withdraw from Russia and stop funding war crimes. The entire controversy started last year, after a joint report by French newspaper Le Monde and investigative websites The Insider and Bellingcat, revealed that Auchan's branch in Russia supplied the Russian army with products worth 2 million rubles ($27,000). However, the report fell short of revealing as to who gave them the information. They attributed the report to anonymous sources.

Further, Auchan last year said it has no plans to exit its business from Russia, even as many other western companies left the Russian market after the war started in Eastern Europe.

Ukraine accuses French retailer Auchan for 'funding war crimes' after these revelations

Self-proclaimed president of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko has invited US President Joe Biden to Minsk to meet with Vladimir Putin to "stop the war" against Ukraine.

Ukraine War: Belarus President claims he can help negotiate peace

World leaders will this week attend the Munich Security Conference ahead of the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and with tensions between China and the United States rising over espionage claims.

Russia, which has one of the largest military forces in the world, has got some harsh estimations thrown up at it by a new think tank report. International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) has made an estimation that in the first nine months of Russia's war on Ukraine there has been a substantial decrease in the Russian army's fleets of tanks. How much loss are we talking about? According to the think tank, Moscow may just have lost about 40 per cent of its prewar fleet of tanks.

The estimations were made mostly with the aid of images taken by drones, and satellites from the battlefield from February through November end. However, these are only estimations and cannot be relied upon completely. The think tank went on to say that because of this significant dearth of tanks which is estimated to have gone for up to 50 per cent for few key tanks, Russia is now forced to use its cold war-era weaponry.

In contrast, the think tank said that Ukraine’s tank numbers are estimated to have increased. The reason for this increase is Kyiv's capture of Soviet-era tanks as well as aid received from western allies. John Chipman, the chair of the think tank called the war “a political and military failure for Russia." He said that this is a leadership issue compounded by deficiencies in Moscow's munitions. Chipman also noted that all this transpired even after Kremlin's modernisation efforts.

While launching the think tank's annual Military Balance audit of the world’s armed forces, he said, “Russia’s actions over the past year have raised questions not only over the competence of its military and senior military leadership, but also over command cohesion."

As per the think tank, Russia’s number of tanks in its army may have reduced by 38 per cent from 2,927 to 1,800. Additionally, there may have been heavy losses of its workhorse T-72B3 which is an upgrade to the battle tanks which was in use in 2013.

Despite the losses, the think tank said that Russia still has about 5,000 old tanks in long-term storage and the country with the help of these tanks still has strategic advances. Ukraine, on the other hand, seems to have accentuated in its tank count. Ukraine's tanks have gone up to 953 from 858. Kyiv is estimated to have captured an estimated of 500 tanks from Russia.

War a military failure for Russia, Ukraine's tank count rising: Think tank

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has urged the alliance member countries to ramp up ammunition production for Ukraine while warning that Russian President Vladimir Putin is preparing fresh attacks against the embattled country.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Monday, Stoltenberg said that Ukraine's consumption of ammunition is much greater than the production capacity of the collective West.

He added that it represents not only a challenge to Kyiv, but also to NATO, given that it also means its own stockpiles are being depleted.

“The urgent issue right now is to deliver what has always been promised”, namely armoured vehicles, including German Marders and US Bradleys, Leopard battle tanks and others.

“We need the training, we need the equipment, we need the ammunition and that’s exactly what allies are now providing and will be a top issue at the meetings today here at NATO,” he added.

According to the Associated Press news agency, Ukraine is consuming 6,000-7,000 artillery shells a day, about a third of the number Russia is using.

The member countries have assembled in Brussels for the ninth meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, which focuses on providing support to Ukraine in its war against Russia.

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is also participating in the meeting, said he expects to see Ukraine conduct an offensive in the spring.

“What Ukraine wants to do at the first possible moment is to establish or create momentum and establish conditions on the battlefield that continue to be in its favour,” he said in a news conference in Brussels on Tuesday.

“And so, we expect to see them conduct an offensive sometime in the spring and because of that we are, we all of the partners in the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, have been working hard to ensure that they have the armoured capability, the fires, the sustainment to be able to be effective in creating the effects on the battlefield that they want to create,” he said.

Russia 'recruiting female prisoners' to contribute to Ukraine war, report claims

Dozens of Russian and Ukrainian prisoners of war have returned home after a swap between the two countries who have been at war for almost a year now. The officials on both sides confirmed the prisoners-of-war swap on Saturday. A total of 116 Ukrainians were released, according to Andriy Yermak, an aide to the Ukrainian President.

POWs or prisoners of war are people who are held captive by the other side in the conflict against the backdrop of wartime animosity. Yermak said the released POWs include troops who were held out in Mariupol, a port city, which was besieged just days after Russia invaded Ukraine and was on the target of constant shelling from the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022.

The POWs, he said, also included snipers caught during on-going violent clashes for Bakhmut, a city in eastern Ukraine and fighters from the Kherson region.

This comes in the backdrop of President Volodymyr Zelensky's statement on Friday that Ukraine would fight to hold onto the eastern "fortress" city of Bakhmut for as long as it could. He appealed to the West to provide long-range weapons to aid Kyiv in driving Russian forces out of the Donbas region.

Russia, Ukraine swap dozens of prisoners of war, Moscow thanks UAE for mediation

According to the defence minister of Ukraine, Russia is preparing a significant new offensive that might start as early as February 24. Oleksii Reznikov claimed that Moscow had gathered thousands of soldiers and could "try something" to commemorate the first invasion anniversary last year.

A coalition of 12 nations will deliver 120 to 140 Western tanks to Ukraine in the "first wave" of deliveries, according to foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba. This month, as Moscow stepped up its efforts to win small-scale gains in eastern Ukraine, Kyiv was able to get commitments from the West to provide main battle tanks to help thwart an invasion.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the imposition of sanctions on 182 Russian and Belarusian companies, and three individuals in a bid to block connections between Moscow, Minsk and his country. “Their assets in Ukraine are blocked, their properties will be used for our defence,” Zelenskiy said in a video address on Saturday.

Among those who have been slapped with sanctions include Russian potash fertiliser producer and exporter Uralkali, Belarus state-owned potash producer Belaruskali, Belarusian Railways, as well as Russia’s VTB-Leasing and Gazprombank Leasing, both dealing with transport leasing.

Since the invasion last year, Ukraine has sanctioned hundreds of Russian and Belarusian individuals and firms.

North Korea denies arm supply to Wagner

On Sunday, North Korea denied supplying arms to Moscow after the US accused it of providing rockets and missiles to Russia’s mercenary group Wagner, which has been designated as a transnational criminal organisation by Washington.

The White House citing US intelligence photographs said it had ample evidence suggesting that Russian rail cars entered North Korea to pick up infantry rockets and missiles.

The move prompted strong reactions from Pyongyang with a senior North Korean official warning that the US would face a “really undesirable result” if it persists in spreading the “self-made rumour”.

“Trying to tarnish the image of [North Korea] by fabricating a non-existent thing is a grave provocation that can never be allowed and that cannot but trigger its reaction,” said Kwon Jong-gun, director general of the department of US affairs.

He also called it “a foolish attempt to justify its offer of weapons to Ukraine”.

Apart from China, Russia is one of North Korea’s few international friends and has previously come to the regime’s aid.

The ancient centre of Odessa, a port city in Ukraine that is sometimes referred to as "the pearl of the Black Sea," was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List on Wednesday (January 25) despite opposition from Russia. With six votes in favour, one against, and 14 abstentions, the world heritage committee's 21 member nations accepted the city's designation as a world historic site.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine in February last year, repeatedly tried to delay the vote to recognise the site's "outstanding universal value" and "the duty of all humanity to protect it".

"While the war continues, this inscription embodies our collective determination to ensure that this city, which has always surmounted global upheavals, is preserved from further destruction," said UNESCO director-general Audrey Azoulay after the decision.

Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine, hailed the decision. He had asked for the classification in October to protect the city from Russian bombing. "Today Odessa got UNESCO protection," he said on Twitter. "I'm grateful to partners who help protect our pearl from the Russian invaders' attacks," he added.

Since the Russian invasion, Ukrainians have hastily tried to use sandbags and barriers to try to safeguard the city's landmarks and structures.

The site was also added to the List of World Heritage in Danger, which UNESCO says "gives it access to reinforced technical and financial international assistance" to protect or, if necessary, rehabilitate it.

The agency also stated that it has already assisted with repairs for damage sustained at the Odessa Museum of Fine Arts and the Odessa Museum of Modern Art since the beginning of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Following a months-long bloody battle, Ukrainian forces have pulled back from the eastern salt-mining Soledar town, in what can be seen as a triumph for the Russians after a series of setbacks since the invasion last year. Serhii Cherevatyi, a spokesperson for Ukraine’s forces in the east, told the AP news agency that the Ukrainian army has strategically retreated from the town in the Donbas region to “preserve the lives of its personnel”.

Drones could play a significant role in the event of a full-scale invasion of Taiwan, a Chinese military magazine has reported.

The article further illustrates that drones can “assassinate enemy leaders” and can be utilised to minimise conflict, adding that their targets can be Taiwan’s mobile missile launchers and heavy weaponry.

The report, which gives a glimpse of how a Chinese military’s attack on Taiwan might unfold, was published in Ordnance Industry Science Technology, reports South China Morning Post.

According to the article, once launching “the final unification war”, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) would first like to “suppress the island of Taiwan in all directions – land, sea, air, space, electricity and the internet”.

During an all-out attack, drones will play a key role in order to achieve a decisive outcome, the article highlighted, noting their advantages over manned aircraft and other weapons systems.

“Manned combat aircraft can only stay in the air for a short time, usually three to four hours, which is completely different from the 30 to 40 hours of large and medium-sized drones,” it said.

It said that drones have the upper hand while attacking smaller vessels.

“Long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drones like the GJ-2/11 and BZK-005C, TB-001 could carry out real-time surveillance and cooperate with attack helicopters to mount strikes against Taiwan’s smaller vessels.”

It also said PLA could deploy WZ-7 high-altitude long-endurance reconnaissance drones and extend a blockade of Taiwan to the second island chain.

The strategic group of islands in the middle of the western Pacific Ocean includes Guam, where a US military base is located, some 2,700km (1,600 miles) from Taiwan.

Tensions have been rising in Taiwan Strait ever since US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited the self-ruled island in August last year, triggering strong reactions from China. The PLA, in response, launched live-fire drills around Taiwan.

PLA has been upping its arsenal with the introduction of combat drones. According to media reports, China has TB-001 long-endurance strike and reconnaissance drone, the BZK-005 and BZK-007 long-range reconnaissance drones, the KVD-001 tactical reconnaissance and damage assessment drone, and the WZ-7 reconnaissance drone.
