Local media reported thousands of passengers were affected but Balinese officials gave no estimate.

Bali's international airport operator PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia said Wednesday it had conducted tests in its airspace and no volcanic ash was detected, saying the airport was "operating as normal".

"We have been able to detect transient motion in volcanic activity, and this is a precursor for any kind of eruption," said Ntambila Daud, who is a graduate student at Virginia Tech.

The name of the volcano 'Ol Doinyo Lengai' means 'Mountain of God' in Maasai.&nbsp;

The volcano's records go back to the 1880s, however, it has erupted nine times since, with the largest eruption taking place 17 years ago.

Scientists spot dangerous bulge around 'Mountain of God' volcano, warn of massive eruption

A volcano has erupted in Iceland's Reykjanes peninsula, spewing hot lava, toxic gases and ash into the air, amid fears that this could be the start of another long period of volcanic activity in the Nordic country.&nbsp;

This is the sixth eruption since last December in&nbsp;Reykjanes, which is&nbsp;known for frequent volcanic activity.

“A volcanic eruption has begun. A fissure has opened east of Sylingarfell,” the Icelandic meteorological office (IMO) said in a statement, adding that the eruption had started at 9.26pm local time on Thursday (Aug 22) after a series of earthquakes.

The length of the eruptive fissure was nearly 3.9 km, according to IMO. "The lava flow continues both to the east and west towards Grindavíkurvegur. No lava flow is observed to the south towards Grindavík," it said in an update.

The Shiveluch volcano started sputtering after&nbsp;a 7.0 magnitude earthquake&nbsp;struck the far eastern region of Kamchatka on Sunday. The volcano is located about 280 miles away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city, which has a population of about 180,000.

“According to visual evaluations, the ash column is rising as high as 8 kilometres (5 miles) above the sea level,” scientists from the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences told TASS, a state-owned Russian news agency.

The news agencies mentioned that in the aftermath, a large white cloud of smoke could be seen billowing up against the blue sky, with orange lava spewing out of the crack in the ground.&nbsp;

Benedikt Ofeigsson, who is a volcanologist, told Icelandic public broadcaster RUV that the fissure was growing and was more than 2.5 kilometres long an hour after the start of the eruption.&nbsp;

Mount Nemrut, which has been named after the biblical figure King Nimrod, is 9,672 feet (2,948 metres) in height and is located at the intersection between the Eurasian and the Arabian tectonic plates. According to NASA's Earth Observatory, in 1650, the dormant stratovolcano had majorly erupted for the last time. According to a study conducted in 2012, it was largely carved around 250,000 years ago after a single massive eruption took place. The eruption also led to the release of a huge lava flow which blocked off a river and led to the formation of Turkey's largest lake, Lake Van, which is located at the east side of the mountain. Smaller eruptions continued after that from vents in the eastern half of the caldera and led to the creation of solidified lava which flows on one side of the crater. After some time, the caldera's other side was filled with water and led to the formation of a crater lake. The stark difference between the two sides of the volcano's peak is most visible when snow covers the mountain. When this occurs, it is generally seen as the yin-yang symbol from Chinese philosophy. These were formed by the molten rock's flowing and cooling. These ridges are very different in size and thickness because of the differences in the lava's viscosity across various eruptions, as per the Earth Observatory. The maximum depth of Nemrut's crater lake is around 577 feet (176 m) and it covers similar lava flows from earlier eruptions. This is, however, not the only lake present in the caldera. Another smaller lake, which is 36-foot-deep (11 m), is located between a series of lava flats close to the centre of the caldera's northern edge. The La Cumbre volcano is located around 1,125 kilometres off mainland Ecuador and erupted for the first time since 2020, on March 2, according to Live Science.&nbsp;

The images taken by NASA’s Earth Observatory&nbsp;last month, showed the lava slowly making its way out of a fissure near the summit of the volcano and into the mountain’s tree-covered slopes.

As of early April, a report by the Galápagos Conservancy, a United States-based nonprofit dedicated to the protection and restoration of the islands, said that the lava had made its way to the ocean.&nbsp;

Notably, after more than a month of continuous activity the lava reached the sea after covering a distance of nearly 10 kilometres, said the organisation.&nbsp;

<h2>Impact on Galápagos land iguanas</h2>

Since Fernandina – the most volcanically active island among the Galápagos Islands – is uninhabited, there is no risk to people or infrastructure, but the lava flow reportedly has proven to be a spectacle for people on passing ships.

The island is also home to a large population of rare land iguanas which nest and lay eggs on the rim of the volcano’s large crater or caldera and deep within it.&nbsp;

According to NASA, these yellow reptiles, which can grow to over one metre (3 feet) in length and weigh over 14 kilograms, mostly eat the fruit and leaves of the prickly pear cactus.

Since the eruption, the Galápagos National Park rangers and Geophysical Institute (IG) have been in touch to monitor this spectacle closely, reported the Galápagos Conservancy.&nbsp;

Researchers who are monitoring this volcanic eruption, according to the US-based organisation, said that the lava flow has damaged the island’s endemic vegetation, including the habitat of the land iguanas.&nbsp;

They also reportedly warned that as the lava flows into the ocean, it could potentially damage marine life.&nbsp;

A report by Live Science citing data from the Smithsonian Institute’s Global Volcanism Program said that as of April 25, the lava is still flowing with no end in sight.&nbsp;

“Our mission at Galápagos Conservancy is to safeguard the distinctive wildlife of the Galápagos archipelago,” said Dr. Jorge Carrión, Director of Galápagos Conservancy, in a statement.&nbsp;

He added, “We are watchful and prepared to offer assistance if required, but we also comprehend that this is a natural occurrence, and our primary responsibility is to observe the alterations.”
