Pope Pius XII has been accussed by critics of not doing enough&nbsp;as Hitler's Germany began systematically killing Jews during the Holocaust.

The documents include all kinds of requests made by Jews across Europe including seeking&nbsp;visas and&nbsp;asylum,&nbsp;information about family members who were deported by the Nazis, reunifying families, obtaining liberation from detention and transfers from one concentration camp to another.

The letter sent to Pope Pius XII by Jewish people includes both the baptized and the non-baptized after the beginning of Nazi and fascist persecution. The Vatican said the fate of many asking for help is unknown.

"Each of these requests constituted a case which, once processed, was destined for storage in a documentary series entitled “Ebrei” &nbsp;(Jews)," the Vatican said in a statement.&nbsp;

The requests would arrive at the Secretariat of State, where diplomatic channels would try to provide all the help possible, taking into account the complexity of the political situation in the global context, the Vatican informed.

"This special list of names was given the name, “Pacelli’s list", (Pope Pius XII), echoing the well-known “Schindler’s list”.

During their meeting, PM Modi and the Pope discussed a wide range of issues including climate change and poverty.

"PM Modi had a very warm meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican. A meeting that was scheduled only for twenty minutes went on for an hour," said an official who didn't wish to be named.

It is the first-ever one-to-one meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Pope Francis.&nbsp;At the Vatican, Modi was accompanied by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. The Prime Minister also met Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican City State.

Modi is the fifth Indian Prime Minister to meet the head of the Roman Catholics. Before him, prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, I K Gujral and Atal Bihari Vajpayee had met the then popes at the Vatican.

The Vatican has banned the former archbishop of Wroclaw in Poland from taking part in any public ceremonies, following his alleged role in “covering up” child sexual abuse cases in the church.

The move against retired Archbishop Marian Golebiewski, 83, was announced on Saturday by the Archdiocese of Wroclaw in western Poland. It was the latest case of alleged sexual abuse cover-up in predominantly Catholic Poland.

During the investigation, it was found that Golebiewski failed to give sufficient credence to sex abuse allegations from 1996 to 2013, the Vatican said.

“As a result, the 83-year-old was ordered to live in the spirit of penance and prayer,” Reuters quoted the Vatican as saying.

In a statement, the Vatican said he was banned from taking part in any public ceremonies and ordered to pay a “suitable sum” to a fund that helps the victims of abuse.

The 30-page APSA budget showed that it owns 4,051 properties in Italy and about 1,120 abroad, not including its embassies around the world.

Only about 14 per cent&nbsp;of its Italian properties were rented at market rates, while the others were rented at cut rates, many to Church employees. About 40 per cent were institutional buildings such as schools, convents and hospitals.

The documentation showed that APSA owns properties as investments in upscale areas of London, Geneva, Lausanne and Paris.

One building, in London's smart South Kensington district, led to enormous losses after it was purchased by the&nbsp;Vatican's Secretariat of State as an investment in 2014.

The 84-year-old supreme pontiff was admitted to Rome's Gemelli hospital on Sunday where he was operated under general anaesthetic for symptomatic diverticular stenosis of the colon.

Bruni assured the Pope has reacted well to the surgery that lasted for nearly three hours. He added that the leader is in "good general condition, alert and breathing spontaneously", and is on the road to recovery.

The pope appeared to be in fine health several hours earlier when he addressed thousands of people in St&nbsp;Peter's Square for his Sunday blessing and announced a trip to Slovakia and Budapest for September. 
 
The sprawling Catholic-run Gemelli hospital and medical school in the northern part of Rome traditionally treats popes and a part of its 10th floor is permanently reserved for them.

As he does every year in July, Francis already had suspended all of his general and private audiences for the month. The surgery appeared to be timed to coincide with a period in which he has only one public commitment - his Sunday blessing in St&nbsp;Peter's Square.

Becciu, who Pope Francis fired last year and who has always maintained his innocence during a two-year investigation, became the highest-ranking Vatican based Church official to be indicted for alleged financial crimes.

As per Church law, the pope personally approved the judge's decision to investigate and indict Becciu. The charges against him include embezzlement and abuse of office. An Italian woman who worked for Becciu was charged with embezzlement.

Both have denied wrongdoing.

Four companies associated with individual defendants, two in Switzerland, one in the United States and one in Slovenia, were also indicted.

The trial is due to start on July 27 in the Vatican, a statement said.

Becciu will be prosecuted over embezzlement, abuse of power and witness tampering in the case, linked to a scandal concerning a loss-making&nbsp;Vatican&nbsp;investment in central London that happened under his watch. He has always professed his innocence.

Before his dismissal, he led the&nbsp;Vatican's department on sainthood. From 2011 to 2018 he was the Substitute for General Affairs, a role akin to the chief of staff in the&nbsp;Vatican's central bureaucracy.

Among the other defendants in the&nbsp;Vatican&nbsp;trial&nbsp;are Rene Bruelhart, the Swiss former head of the Financial Information Authority (FIA), the&nbsp;Vatican's financial watchdog.

Among the&nbsp;others&nbsp;facing&nbsp;Vatican&nbsp;justice are former FIA director Tommaso Di Ruzza and Italian consultant Cecilia Marogna, known as "the&nbsp;Cardinal's Lady" for her links with Becciu.

The young woman allegedly received 500,000 euros from the&nbsp;Vatican&nbsp;into her Slovenian bank.

Becciu protests innocence

The opaque investment at the heart of the scandal is a building in London's upmarket Chelsea district, which was transformed into 50 luxury apartments.

In a statement, Becciu said he was the "victim of a plot" and protested his "absolute innocence".

He said he had been pilloried by the media and looked forward to the chance to explain.
