He hoped rescuers would be able to reach the trapped workers by 8:30 am.

Earlier on Wednesday, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel entered the tunnel, an official statement issued by Uttarakhand Chief Minister's Office said.

An ambulance is also deployed inside the tunnel and a team of doctors is also put on stand-by for health check-ups of the workers, it said.

"Silkyara rescue operation is now in the final stages. The NDRF team is deployed to rescue the workers. Earlier, Khalkho had said that the rescuers had bored through 24 metres of rubble inside the Silkyara Tunnel.

"We have reached 24 metres inside which is a good situation. We are trying to reach the other end as soon as possible...We are airlifting another machine from Indore, it will reach here tomorrow morning."&nbsp;

National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel who are at the site also carried out a mock drill of a "possible evacuation through the 900mm wide steel pipes".

"SDRF, NDRF, Police, medical workers, fire service, everyone is working in co-ordination to safely rescue the labourers. We are also conducting a mock drill to provide medical aid to them as soon as they are rescued," SP Yadavanshi said.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways VK Singh had arrived at the site to take stock of the rescue operation when the drilling by the new machine began.

He said that the government and all its agencies were making efforts to complete the operation within two to three days and rescue all the 40 workers trapped inside.

"Government, all its agencies and experts with whom we can communicate--the efforts of all of us are aimed at rescuing the workers at the earliest. I have spoken with them and their morale is high. They understand that all efforts are being made for them and we are weighing all options to rescue them," Singh told reporters in Uttarkashi.

He said the labourers were confined in a small space of about two kilometres in the debris and they were sending in food water and oxygen via a pipe to the trapped workers.

"Our priority is to rescue them sooner. Efforts are being made for this. All the agencies are putting effort into this. A new machine is working, whose power and speed are better than the old machine. Our effort is to complete this rescue operation within two to three days. We are also taking the help of international experts. They know that the government is working to rescue them," the minister said.

Earlier in the day, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was reviewing the rescue operation.

"We are in regular contact with the trapped. All the arrangements for them are being made there. Everyone is safe. Work was done by the NHIDCL and the tunnel was on the verge of completion. Just 400 metres were left... Now we will review it all... PM Modi is reviewing the rescue operation and is continuously in contact with all of us," Dhami told news agency ANI.

Colonel Deepak Patil, the one helming the rescue efforts, said that the "Union Minister was here and he talked to the labourers. He assured them, and those labourers responded and they liked it."

He then said the drilling work had resumed and that the rescue operations were moving at a very fast pace.

<h2>About the incident</h2>

A section of the under-construction tunnel on the Yamunotri National Highway connecting Silkyara to Dandalgaon collapsed late Saturday, said the Uttarkashi Superintendent of Police (SP) Arpan Yaduvanshi, as per news agency ANI.&nbsp;

The official added that the tunnel part broke around 200 metres ahead of the starting point on the Silkyara side of Brahmakhal-Polgaon.

Speaking to ANI about the ongoing rescue operation at the tunnel, Mritunjay Kumar, the loader operator, said that the team is removing the debris using excavators and other heavy machines.&nbsp;

“We are moving ahead slowly. We have drilled 10 to 15 metres till now, but we still need to drill 30 to 40 metres (to rescue those who are trapped inside),” said the rescue official.

Officials on the site also said that the workers have been provided with oxygen and water. “Everyone is safe, we have provided oxygen and water to them. We are making our way sideways to go inside the tunnel,” said Prashant Kumar, Circle Officer of Uttarkashi.&nbsp;

According to officials of Hydroelectricity Investment and Development Company Limited (HIDCL), which has been contracted to build the tunnel, about 36 people are feared trapped under the debris and efforts are underway to pull them out alive.

Earlier today, authorities reported that ten more bodies have been&nbsp;recovered raising the death toll to 26 due to&nbsp;an avalanche that slammed climbers in the Indian Himalayas. Additionally,&nbsp;at least three trainees still missing, indicated a statement by the&nbsp;Nehru Institute Of Mountaineering (NIM).&nbsp;

Among the 26 bodies recovered were trainee mountaineers and two were instructors, said the NIM. The statement added, that 15 bodies were covered on Thursday and seven on Friday. According to&nbsp;District Magistrate (DM) Abhishek Ruhella, four bodies were brought to Matli but were taken to&nbsp;Harsil helipad due to bad weather and subsequently sent to&nbsp;Uttarkashi in ambulances. 
 
He added that not all recovered bodies have been identified yet, but the&nbsp;family members and&nbsp;relatives of those missing have been contacted. The heavy rain and bad weather have hampered aerial&nbsp;search efforts in the region but on-the-ground rescue&nbsp;remains uninterrupted, said&nbsp;Ruhella.&nbsp;&nbsp; 
 
The 14 injured mountaineers from the NIM&nbsp;were airlifted to a base camp of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at Matli, of which five were admitted to the district hospital in Uttarkashi.

The rest of the nine sustained minor injuries and were sent back to the NIM, the Uttarakhand Police said.

The inclement weather at the site of the avalanche is proving a challenge for the&nbsp;rescue teams, officials said.

Earlier, state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami conducted an aerial inspection of the site, which is at the height of 18,000 feet.

The NIM in a statement said that the team which was caught in the avalanche consisted of 34 trainee mountaineers and seven instructors only.

Meanwhile, officials didn’t provide details on whether the 14 injured mountaineers rescued were part of the 41-member team that had gone to summit the Draupadi ka Danda-II peak or waiting at the NIM base camp.
