Oracle, the computer software company, congratulated USA pacer Saurabh Netravalkar after his bowling heroics propelled his side to a stunning win over Pakistan in match 11 of the 2024 T20 World Cup, being held in the West Indies and the USA, on Thursday (local time). Netravalkar made&nbsp;headlines before the mega event when his LinkedIn profile went viral and a colleague of his revealed that he was working with him at Oracle. Notably, Netravalkar represented India in the 2010 U-19 World Cup before moving to the States to study and found a job in Oracle.

Talking about USA's win, Monank Patel &amp; Co. rode on Netravalkar's 2 for 18 and left-arm pacer Nosthush Kenjige's 3 for 30 to restrict Pakistan to 159 for 7. In reply, USA tied the game, scoring&nbsp;159 for 3, riding on their captain's 50 and vice-captain Aaron Jones' 36 not out.

In the Super Over, it was Netravalkar who held his nerves to restrict Pakistan to 13 for 1 after they were asked to chase 19 in the final six balls. Thus, Oracle left a heartfelt message for their employee.

"Congrats @USACricket on a historic result! Proud of the team and our very own engineering and cricket star @Saurabh_Netra," said Oracle.

T20 World Cup: Oracle congratulates 'engineering, cricket star' Saurabh Netravalkar after USA stun Pakistan

USA defeated Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over clash in match 11 of the T20 World Cup, being held in USA and West Indies. India-born&nbsp;Saurabh Netravalkar was the star of the show, as he halted Pakistan's run chase in the Super Over to hand his team a memorable win. As soon as the last ball was bowled, his teammates rejoiced and hugged&nbsp;Saurabh. However,&nbsp;Saurabh didn't break into any wild&nbsp;celebratory gestures and maintained a calm grin.

At the&nbsp;Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas, Babar Azam &amp; Co. were asked to bat first and the Men in Green posted 159 for 7, after struggling in the first ten overs. In reply, USA tied the game, managing&nbsp;159/3. In the Super Over, pacer&nbsp;Netravalkar held his nerves to defend USA's score of 18/1 as Pakistan only managed 13, with the loss of a wicket, to lose by five runs.

Talking about the Super Over, USA piled up 18 in six balls, bowled by an erratic Mohammad Amir (who had a good outing during the run-chase, with 1 for 25). In reply, Pakistan gave themselves a chance with Fakhar Zaman and Iftikhar Ahmed coming out to bat but&nbsp;Netravalkar -- with match figures of 2 for 18 -- took USA to a historic win. Asked to bat first, Pakistan lost Mohammad Rizwan,&nbsp;Usman Khan and Zaman early as&nbsp;Netravalkar and left-arm spinner&nbsp;Nosthush Kenjige made a fine start with the ball. Skipper Babar (43-ball 44) and Shadab Khan (40) added 72 for the fourth-wicket to revive their innings. In the end, Iftikhar and Shaheen Afridi's finishing acts propelled the 2009 winners to a competitive 159 for 7.&nbsp;

However, USA batters looked determined to chase down the score. Skipper Monank Patel held one end and added 36 runs with his opening partner Steven Taylor before putting on another 68 with&nbsp;Andries Gous (35). While the two were back in the hut before the death overs, vice-captain Aaron Jones' 36 not out ensured the game went into the Super Over. Amir and Naseem Shah were economical and chipped in with a wicket each, however, Pakistan's sloppy fielding and erratic bowling -- especially in the Super Over -- led to their shocking loss.

T20 WC: Saurabh Netravalkar calmly grins as USA record HISTORIC win against Pakistan - Watch

USA stunned Pakistan in a thrilling Super Over win in match 11 of the 2024 T20 World Cup, which is being held in the West Indies and USA. Babar Azam-led Pakistan, who kickstarted their campaign at the mega event on Thursday (June 6) at the&nbsp;Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas,&nbsp;were sloppy with the ball and on the field as USA&nbsp;took&nbsp;the 160-run chase to the Super Over.&nbsp;The co-hosts&nbsp;made 18/1 and conceded only 13, taking a wicket, to cause a huge upset.

Talking about the contest, USA captain Monank Patel won the toss and elected to bowl first. On a tricky pitch, Pakistan lost&nbsp;Mohammad Rizwan, Usman Khan and Fakhar Zaman inside the powerplays. Left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige and pacer Saurabh Netravalkar made early inroads as Pakistan were struggling at 26-3. Shadab Khan, at No. 5, tried to accelerate and made a useful 25-ball 40 whereas captain Babar played the anchor's role. Their partnership took Pakistan out of trouble but&nbsp;Kenjige removed Shadab and Azam Khan soon, with the latter falling for a golden duck.

Babar, too, was trapped lbw for a 43-ball 44 (striking at only 102.33) with medium-pacer Jasdeep Singh dismissing him. Iftikhar Ahmed (14-ball 18) and Shaheen Afridi (16-ball 24) took Men in Green to a competitive 159/7. However, a poor start and disciplined bowling from USA prevented the last edition's runners-up from posting anything over 175.

In reply, USA&nbsp;looked determined to make a statement. Openers Steven Taylor and Monank added 36 for the first wicket before Naseem Shah removed the former. Skipper Monank (50) added a fine 68 for the second-wicket with Andries Gous (35) as Pakistani bowlers were erratic whereas their fielding was below-par.&nbsp;

T20 World Cup 2024: USA spring HUGE SURPRISE, beat listless Pakistan in Super Over

As Rishabh Pant went across the crease and scooped Ireland's Barry McCarthy out of the ropes to register an eight-wicket win on Wednesday (Jun 5) in its first match of the 2024 T20 World Cup, one thing became clear: India aren't as bad as many thought for many weeks leading up to the tournament.

When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released the squad for the tourney in the USA and the West Indies, it felt like India were stomping on an axe. The team looked dull. Not one member of the first 15 reached the IPL 2024 final, which seemed symbolic of the team being behind the needs of the hard-hitting, defensive-bowling T20 era.

Pant was in the middle of it. A batter with a T20I average of 22.43 and a strike rate of 126.38 was reportedly the first-choice wicketkeeper over Sanju Samson, the captain of Rajasthan Royals, who had just had his best-ever season in the IPL with a strike rate of 153.47.

To be clear, that concern, along with the worry about the seemingly conservative selections (like Rohit Sharma, who doesn’t have the T20 numbers to back him) and the exclusion of Rinku Singh were not wrong. They made complete sense at the time and still do.

However, from the evidence of the conditions we have seen so far in both host countries, the squad doesn’t look as out of place as it would have been otherwise.

Both Pant and Rohit like to take their time at the start of the innings. It wasn’t possible during IPL 2024 because on tracks as flat as those in Hyderabad and Bengaluru, wasting deliveries to understand the bounce meant pulling your team behind. In the US, with uneven bounce and turn, and in the West Indies, with slow turn and low bounce, taking time is excusable.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/cricket/t20-wc-rohit-sharma-surpasses-ms-dhoni-to-become-indian-captain-with-most-t20i-wins-after-ireland-tie-729219">Also read |&nbsp;T20 WC: Rohit Sharma surpasses MS Dhoni to become Indian captain with most T20I wins after Ireland tie</a>

Here, it’s important for the set batters to take responsibility and finish the game because unlike in the IPL, wickets can quickly fall in the middle overs when the ball gets old.

“It's going back to the old T20, with someone needed to bat through [the innings],” Australian captain Mitchell Marsh said on Thursday after his side recovered from 50/3 against Oman to win the game by 39 runs in Barbados.

This “old T20” suits India well. Apart from Pant and Rohit, Virat Kohli at the top can always drop into the anchor role, despite leveling up his big-hitting game in IPL 2024.

The finishing concerns about Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya can also rest as their weakness — hard-length at pace — seems to be slightly less effective on the slowish tracks. The abundance of spin throughout the tournament will also favour the move to bring Shivam Dube (who strikes at 158.80 against spin in the IPL since 2022) over Rinku (110.65).

Finally, India’s bowling attack, which initially seemed over-dependent on Jasprit Bumrah, looks much better. Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj, who struggled on flat tracks in India, are enjoying the seam movement available in the US while Jadeja and Axar Patel’s Test-match style bowling is much more difficult to get away here than in India.

A bit like how Australia performed better than India in the 2023 World Cup final thanks to the helpful pitch, despite being a weaker team on paper, the Men in Blue can get the best out of their playing 11 to beat stronger, more balanced opponents with the help of the conditions.

It might be a well-thought-out move from the selectors or just a happy coincidence — and a bigger test awaits against Pakistan on June 9 still — but so far, it’s working and India is thriving.

T20 World Cup: Why the tough conditions in the US and West Indies are a blessing in disguise for India

The Indian Team began their 2024 T20 World Cup campaign with a win over Bangladesh in their lone warm-up tie in New York on Saturday (June 1), but that didn't make headlines; the tight security cover provided to both teams did. Amid security-related concerns for the Indian Team from ISIS-linked terror outfits, mainly targeted towards the India-Pakistan game on June 9, the local security agencies at Nassau County are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to curb this.

Per the latest report in Cricbuzz, the number of security personnel, police and paramedics present at the newly-built Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York was enough to match the number of spectators who came to watch the game.&nbsp;

The report also said that a helicopter hovered over the ground constantly while the Indian Team was placed under a high-security cordon. Moreover, the Indian Team bus was driven via an alternative route and not through the usual thoroughfares of New York’s Long Island. The new (25-minute long) route, crossing the golf course, was known to a handful of security personnel and was used before and after the game.

A team official also commented on this, saying, "No one knows which route the teams will travel through. It is up to the police."

Meanwhile, the Indian Team is staying at a five-star hotel in Long Island, with high-security cover provided to them. While access to the hotel is exclusive to the staff and the hotel guests, those attempting to enter it without authorisation shall be removed swiftly, with police taking command of the situation if necessary.

<h2>Trouble for all</h2>

Following the threat, all concerned parties and stakeholders took the matter into their hands and upped the security in and around the venue, with multiple police forces, including the New York Police Department (NYPD), New York State Police, and Nassau County Police taking charge.&nbsp;

Although the extensive security cover has troubled the spectators, media personnel and even players trying to enter the stadium, the ICC is working on providing a secure and enjoyable space for everyone attending the matches.

"Security measures are stringent but necessary. We don't want it either eased or tightened! The discussion with the police will be to improve the process to get all the attendees. This is what needs to be communicated to the police," an ICC official said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Meanwhile, India's first game of the tournament is against Ireland at the same venue on Wednesday (June 5). The Men in Blue next face Pakistan in the marquee clash on Sunday (June 9).&nbsp;

"Security measures are stringent but necessary. We don't want it either eased or tightened! The discussion with the police will be to improve the process to get all the attendees. This is what needs to be communicated to the police," an ICC official said, as quoted by Cricbuzz. Meanwhile, India's first game of the tournament is against Ireland at the same venue on Wednesday (June 5). The Men in Blue next face Pakistan in the marquee clash on Sunday (June 9).

T20 World Cup: Tight security web highlight of India’s warm-up match in New York

Virat Kohli remains the only member of the Indian T20 World Cup squad not to have reached New York&nbsp;ahead of the first warm-up match versus Bangladesh&nbsp;on June 1 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium. BCCI is yet to provide any update on his travel status but it appears that Kohli will miss the match and directly play in the first league contest against Ireland on June 4.&nbsp;

While Kohli is yet to jet off for the USA, most of the Indian players had their first training session on Tuesday (May 28).&nbsp;Soham Desai, the team's strength and conditioning coach revealed that the players were being accessed initially, having been away for two months on Indian Premier League (IPL) duty. They would be eased back into training slowly.&nbsp;

"They have been away for two-and-a-half months from us [the national team setup]. Just getting them together to know where they stand, what needs to be done before the World Cup was the goal," Desai said in a video released by BCCI.&nbsp;

"[The] goal is to spend 45 minutes to an hour there on the park to again get going.&nbsp;We want to see them move. We want to see them run so that we can put enough plans in place for each guy to be ready for the first game."&nbsp;

India's leader of the bowling lineup, Jasprit Bumrah, looked in happy spirits despite a disappointing campaign with the Mumbai Indians.&nbsp;

"We've not yet played cricket. We've come here for a team activity today.&nbsp;Hopefully, it will be good. The weather is really good. So looking forward," said Bumrah.&nbsp;

T20 World Cup: Virat Kohli remains the only missing face as Indian players undergo training

Former India captain Virat Kohli did not travel with the first batch of players and support staff on Saturday (May 25) for the US ahead of the start of the T20 World Cup. Kohli, a key part of the Indian squad is also expected to miss the first and only warm-up match against Bangladesh, scheduled on June 1 as he has sought an extended break from the&nbsp;Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).&nbsp;

Kohli had conveyed to BCCI in advance that he wanted a 'mini-break' after the IPL, according to a report in The&nbsp;Indian Express newspaper.

Here’s why Virat Kohli could miss India’s only warm up game vs Bangladesh before T20 World Cup

On Thursday (May 23), USA stunned a full-strength Bangladesh side for the second successive time by winning the second and penultimate T20I, of the three-match series, in Houston. After winning the series opener, where USA chased down 154 without dropping much sweat, the hosts looked a lot more confident and defended a moderate 144/6 at the&nbsp;Prairie View Cricket Complex, Houston courtesy of Ali Khan's three-fer to help his side claim an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.&nbsp;

The series win is a historic achievement for USA, who will be co-hosting the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup along with West Indies in June. The mega event kicks off on June 1 and USA, who will play the tournament-opener versus Canada, would be beaming in confidence after attaining their maiden T20I series win versus Bangladesh, their first against a Test-playing nation in T20 cricket.

Talking about the match, Bangladesh opted to bowl first. USA openers started off nicely with a 44-run opening stand. Throughout the innings, USA batters couldn't raise the tempo but also didn't lose wickets in clusters. Riding on captain-cum-wicketkeeper&nbsp;Monank Patel's 42 and&nbsp;Aaron Jones' 35 (34), the home team managed 144-6 on a sluggish surface.

In reply, the Bangla Tigers were expected to chase down the moderate score and level the series. Nonetheless, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto (36) and Shakib Al Hasan (30) showed some resistance but couldn't carry on for long as Ali (3 for 25),&nbsp;Shadley van Schalkwyk (2 for 21) and&nbsp;Saurabh Netravalkar (2 for 15) dismissed Bangladesh for 138 in 19.3 overs.

Bangladesh captain&nbsp;Shanto said after the loss, "Very disappointing for us. We lost wickets in the middle overs, that was the reason why we lost. We didn't play well, but we have an opportunity to come up with a good plan in the next match. We should change our mindset, it's not about our skills."

This is a huge setback for Bangladesh right before the T20 WC. Their WC preparations have now gone for a toss with a shocking series loss versus a lowly-ranked USA. They will be desperate to avoid a series whitewash at the hands of USA in the third and final encounter, on May 25.

The United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid for the 2027 Women's World Cup on Monday, just weeks before FIFA is due to vote to award the tournament at a meeting in Bangkok.

In a joint statement from the US and Mexico football federations, the two governing bodies said they would now switch focus towards mounting a successful bid for the 2031 tournament.

The shock decision comes as FIFA officials prepare to hold a vote at the global governing body's Congress in Bangkok on May 17 to decide the 2027 hosts.

The US and Mexico withdrawal leaves two rival bids vying for the tournament -- a joint bid from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and a solo bid from Brazil.

The end of the US-Mexico bid came after FIFA said earlier on Monday that the 2027 tournament hosts would for the first time be decided by an open vote when the FIFA Congress convenes in Thailand next month.

The US had been bidding to stage the women's football flagship event for the third time after hosting the tournament successfully on its own in 1999 and 2003.

Had the US-Mexico bid for 2027 been successful, it would have meant another large-scale sporting event taking place in North America in what has become a crowded calendar for the region.

The United States, Mexico and Canada are already gearing up to stage the men's 2026 World Cup, while Los Angeles is preparing to host the 2028 Olympics.&nbsp;

The United States is also due to host next year's expanded FIFA Club World Cup, and is also staging this year's 16-team Copa America.

US Soccer said waiting until 2031 would give tournament organizers more breathing space to plan for the tournament while absorbing lessons from the region's staging of the 2026 men's World Cup.

"Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking -- and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe," US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement.&nbsp;

"I'm proud of our commitment to provide equitable experiences for the players, fans and all our stakeholders.&nbsp;

"Shifting our bid will enable us to host a record-breaking Women's World Cup in 2031 that will help to grow and raise the level of the women's game both here at home as well as across the globe." &nbsp;

Mexico Football Federation chief Ivar Sisniega echoed Parlow Cone's position.

"After careful analysis we feel that moving our bid back to 2031 will allow us to promote and build up to the most successful Women's World Cup ever," Sisniega said.&nbsp;

"The strength and universality of our professional women's leagues, coupled with our experience from organizing the 2026 World Cup, means that we will be able to provide the best infrastructure as well as an enthusiastic fan base that will make all the participating teams feel at home and to put together a World Cup that will contribute to the continued growth of women's football."

Last year's women's World Cup was held in Australia and New Zealand.&nbsp;

The last time the tournament was held in North America was when Canada hosted in 2015.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday (Mar 19) reiterated America’s ‘ironclad’ commitment&nbsp;to defend key ally the Philippines against a potential attack in the South China Sea. Blinken’s remarks come amidst increasing hostility between Chinese and Filipino forces in the disputed waters in the region. Blinken is visiting the US treaty ally, where he met his counterpart Enrique Manalo and was poised to meet Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and other top officials in Manila.

Blinken’s visit to Manila comes ahead of a planned summit in the White House where top leaders of the Philippines and Japan are slated to gather. Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden and Marcos will gather to discuss China’s aggression in the South China Sea and North Korea’s increasingly belligerent nuclear programme.

<h2>Increasing tensions between Beijing and Manila</h2>

The USA’s commitment to Manila’s security holds extreme importance if viewed through the prism of increasing hostility between China and the Philippines.

Two weeks ago, the Chinese coast guard stopped Philippine boats near a disputed area called Second Thomas Shoal.

They blasted Filipino vessels with water cannons, causing slight injuries to a Filipino admiral and four sailors. During the confrontation, there were two small crashes between Chinese and Philippine boats. The Philippines protested these actions and called them unacceptable. They summoned China's deputy ambassador to express their protest. The United States warned that it would protect the Philippines if they were attacked in the South China Sea.

The Chinese coast guard, on the other hand, said they took action against Philippine ships that entered waters near ‘Ren'ai Reef’ (Second Thomas Shoal) illegally.

Apart from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei also assert their claims in the resource-rich and busy South China Sea, which is a crucial global trade route.

China asserts nearly the entire South China Sea as its territory. Over the past decade, China has transformed barren reefs into seven islands, which now function as military bases with missile defences. Among these, three have runways, enhancing China's ability to reinforce its territorial claims and conduct patrols.

In response, the United States has been strengthening its military alliances and security partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region. This includes collaborations with the Philippines, Vietnam, and other nations that are in dispute with China over the South China Sea.

Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, US President Joe Biden and Marcos will gather to discuss China’s aggression in the South China Sea and North Korea’s increasingly belligerent nuclear programme. Increasing tensions between Beijing and Manila The USA’s commitment to Manila’s security holds extreme importance if viewed through the prism of increasing hostility between China and the Philippines. Also read:India, China may engage in `armed conflict` amid strained ties, claims US intelligence assessment This area is guarded by a small Philippine navy group but surrounded by Chinese ships. Last year, there were tense clashes between Chinese and Philippine coast guard ships here. However, the recent confrontation was considered more serious because Filipino navy personnel were injured, and their boat was damaged. China’s disputes in the region Apart from China and the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Brunei also assert their claims in the resource-rich and busy South China Sea, which is a crucial global trade route. (With inputs from agencies)

India on Friday (Mar 15) rejected the comments made by a US government spokesperson over the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act or CAA, which expedites Indian citizenship for persecuted religious minorities from neighbouring Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

"The CAA is about giving citizenship, not about taking away citizenship. It addresses the issue of statelessness, provides human dignity and supports human rights," the Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson said this afternoon.

"The Citizenship Amendment Act is an internal matter, and is in keeping with India's inclusive traditions and long-standing commitment to human rights. The CAA grants safe haven to persecuted minorities belonging to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, who have entered India on or before December 31 2014," the spokesperson added.

"We are of the view that it is misplaced, misinformed, and unwarranted," the MEA said while reacting to the statement by the US State Department.

The US said Thursday (Mar 14) it was ‘concerned’ over the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) by India.

"We are concerned about the notification of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act on March 11. We are closely monitoring this Act - how this Act will be implemented," State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at his daily briefing.

"Respect for religious freedom and equal treatment under the law for all communities are fundamental democratic principles," he added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government officially notified the act on Monday (Mar 11), which reduces the qualification period of application for citizenship from 11 to 5 years for eligible migrants who came to India before December 31, 2014.

<h2>India’s home minister slams critics</h2>

Home Minister Amit Shah, earlier in an interview, explained why the act doesn’t award benefits to Muslim immigrants. In an interview with news agency ANI, Shah said it was India’s “moral and constitutional responsibility to give shelter to those who were part of Akhand Bharat and suffered religious persecution.” Akhand Bharat or Greater India is a historical concept that represents erstwhile India before partition and includes parts of modern-day Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

With the ICC T20 World Cup less than three months away, the price for the tickets have skyrocketed, especially for the mouth-watering India vs Pakistan contest. Although the World Cup is taking place in the United States of America (USA) - a non-traditional cricketing nation, the prices continue to remain at an all-time high.&nbsp;

According to a report in USA Today, tickets to two of India's matches involving Pakistan and Canada had been sold out as soon as they were released. However, the same tickets were now being sold on secondary platforms (resale websites) at&nbsp;exorbitantly high prices.&nbsp;

The official tickets&nbsp;for the&nbsp;India-Pakistan match were priced at&nbsp;$6 (Rs 497) with the most expensive ticket for the premium seats costing around&nbsp;$400 (Rs 33,148) without taxes. The ICC had specified at the time that "no&nbsp;additional fees will be imposed beyond the specified taxes".

However,&nbsp;on&nbsp;StubHub and SeatGeek, the same&nbsp;$400 ticket was now available for&nbsp;$40,000 (around Rs 33 Lakh)&nbsp;and if the platform fee was added, the amount zooted up to&nbsp;$50,000 (around Rs 41 Lakh).

On SeatGeek, the lowest-priced&nbsp;tickets started at $1,198 (Rs 99,305) and went up to&nbsp; $179,500 (Rs 1.48 crore). Adding the platform fees, the eventual price of the tickets came out to around $222,500 (Rs 1.8 crores).&nbsp;

India quickly avenged the loss in the subsequent edition where Virat Kohli's masterful innings took India to victory in front of a 90,000+ crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium (MCG) in Australia.&nbsp;

The US Supreme Court on Wednesday (Feb 28) agreed to take up Donald Trump's claim that as a former president, he has immunity from prosecution in the insurrection case where he is being prosecuted on charges of overturning the 2020 election.&nbsp;

The conservative-majority court weighed in on the case for the first time and scheduled arguments for the week of April 22. It added that&nbsp;Trump's federal election interference trial would remain on hold for now.

The court said it would address the question of whether a former prez has immunity from "criminal prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts" during their tenure in office.&nbsp;

The Republican leader had been scheduled to go on trial in Washington on March 4 for 'subverting the election' allegations. Joe Biden ultimately emerged victorious but not before Trump supporters across the country carried out mass protests, including the infamous breaching of Capitol Hill.&nbsp;

Trump welcomed the decision of the apex court and took to his social media platform to praise the bench.&nbsp;

"Without Presidential Immunity, a President will not be able to properly function, or make decisions, in the best interest of the United States of America," he said in a post on his Truth Social platform. "He must not be guided by the fear of retribution!"

<h2>What happens next?</h2>

A ruling is expected by the end of the court's current term in June. Even then, the court's final opinion could push the start of the trial closer to the 2024 presidential election.

If the court does indeed give the green light for a trial in the case, Trump will not have the ability to muster&nbsp;additional appeals to slow down this case.&nbsp;

Currently, Trump is the leading Republican candidate to secure the nomination and set up a repeat of the 2020 prez race.&nbsp;

Trump's attorneys went to the Supreme Court claiming that cases against&nbsp;him mount to "election interference" and repeatedly argued in court he should not face a jury

Notably, an appeals court had unanimously ruled against the 77-year-old Republican, writing,&nbsp;"We cannot accept former president Trump's claim that a president has unbounded authority to commit crimes that would neutralise the most fundamental check on executive power - the recognition and implementation of election results."

After the stern decision by the appeals court, all eyes will be on the SC on how it proceeds in the case. Experts believe it is among the most&nbsp;consequential election-related cases to reach the top court since it halted the Florida vote recount in 2000 with Republican George W. Bush narrowly leading Democrat Al Gore.

Experts believe it is among the most consequential election-related cases to reach the top court since it halted the Florida vote recount in 2000 with Republican George W. Bush narrowly leading Democrat Al Gore. (With inputs from agencies)

The southern US state of Texas on Wednesday (Feb 28) executed Ivan Cantu, convicted of fatally&nbsp;shooting his cousin, James Mosqueda and his cousin's 22-year-old girlfriend, Amy Kitchen, in November 2000.&nbsp;

According to&nbsp;the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ), Cantu, 50, was put to death by using a lethal injection. The time of death recorded was 6:47 pm local time. Despite concerns over the method of execution, a TDCJ spokesperson said there were no issues with the injection, which took about 21 minutes.&nbsp;

Till his execution, Cantu maintained that he was innocent. In his final speech, he addressed the concerned families and pleaded his case.&nbsp;

“I’d like to address the Kitchens and Mosqueda families. I want you to know that I never killed James and Amy. And if I did, if I knew who did, you would’ve been the first to know any information I would’ve had that would’ve helped to bring justice to James and Amy,"&nbsp;Cantu said.&nbsp;

The prosecutors, however, have claimed that Cantu killed Mosqueda, who dealt illegal drugs, and Kitchen, as he attempted to steal a stash of drugs (cocaine, marijuana) and cash from his cousin's north Dallas home.&nbsp;

<h2>Cantu's claims of innocence&nbsp;</h2>

According to court documents submitted over the years, Cantu's&nbsp;attorney contested this claim. They said false testimony was presented at trial by the state’s key witnesses, including one&nbsp;who&nbsp;has since recanted.

The attorneys also contended a newly uncovered evidence supporting&nbsp;Cantu's version that Mosqueda was targeted and killed by rivals who also threatened Cantu over his cousin’s alleged debts.&nbsp;

Among those expressing doubts about Cantu's conviction was the foreman of the jury that presided over his 2001 trial.

Jeff Calhoun, in an article in the Austin American-Statesman, asked for the execution to be delayed pending further investigation.

A MoveOn.org petition had urged Texas Governor Greg Abbott to halt the execution. The petition even garnered nearly 150,000 signatures but ultimately proved insufficient.&nbsp;
