US Election: Harris pledges to 'prosecute' Trump 'in 10 days' as Michelle Obama voices 'genuine fear'

As the United States prepares to go to polls on November 5, along with the economy, immigrants and health care, abortion rights also stand out as a major election issue. Ten states will be voting to enshrine abortion in their states' laws. These include Montana, Arizona, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Nevada, New York and South Dakota.

Voters in these states are being asked to decide how their state should regulate abortion. The topic can act as a game-changer in the presidential elections. In the seven swing states, the vote will act as referendums to gauge how much the right to have an abortion can affect a tight presidential election.

The Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade in 2022 after which many states went on to enact abortion restrictions or bans. Pro-choice advocates are hoping that enshrining abortion in states' laws in the elections can help bypass the ups and downs of state courts.

Abortion rights in 2020 elections

In August 2020, abortion was not a big topic to vote on among both Democrats and Republicans. Only around 40 per cent of voters at the time said abortion was a very important issue to their vote. It mattered more to Trump voters (46%) than Biden voters (35%).

However, after Roe v. Wade was overturned, things changed for it as a voting issue. Pew Research says 67 per cent of Harris supporters say it is an extremely important issue. This is nearly double what Biden voters said four years back. During the midterm elections in 2022, this number stood at 74 per cent.

Among Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump supporters, this number is 35 per cent today, 11 points lower than in 2020.

So, for Democrats, the matter assumes extreme importance. The party is hoping for a larger voter turnout by those who support abortion rights since the topic is on the ballot.

The Dobbs Decision

Swing states can reasonably be won by either the Democratic or Republican candidate. In the US, voters in certain states largely lean towards a single party and so are known as "safe states". Such states are also known as "red states" where Republicans enjoy more support and "blue states" where Democrats have a bigger backing.

Abortion in swing states is expected to be a major issue this time. These states will largely decide the country’s next president and federal leaders. They are undecided and how they vote will be a referendum on the right to abortion.

The Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision in 2022 saw the US Supreme Court stating that the Constitution of the United States does not confer a right to abortion. Both Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992) were overruled by it.

The Dobbs decision was widely criticised for bringing about changes around abortion. Experts say it has made abortion the top issue among voters, and in swing states, it will be a deciding factor.

“What we’ve seen in every election since the Dobbs decision is that abortion is at the top of mind for voters — and it’s not just helping voters decide who or what to vote for. It’s actually a turnout driver,” Ryan Stitzlein, vice president of political and government relations at national lobbying group Reproductive Freedom for All, told Stateline.

Swing states and anti-abortion push

Swing states are being flooded with anti-abortion money where lobbying groups Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America and Women Speak Out PAC are working against the rights.

Trump and other GOP candidates have been focussing on the most controversial type of abortions and those performed in the third trimester while calling Democrats champions of infanticide during campaign rallies.

Going by research polls and the current sentiment, abortion rights are expected to bring in more voters on polling day and play a major role in deciding who wins the White House.

US Election 2024: US Elections Historic In More Ways Than One

Billionaire Elon Musk's America PAC has received a warning from the US Justice Department over its $1 million daily giveaways to registered voters. According to US media reports published Wednesday (Oct 23), the Justice Department said that the giveaways could potentially breach federal law.

The America PAC is a super PAC (political action committee) created by Elon Musk to support Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.

Reports from CNN and 24sight News revealed that the Justice Department's warning letter to Musk's PAC highlights concerns that the whopping one million dollar giveaway may violate federal law, which prohibits offering money to encourage voter registration.

Musk, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, launched the contest in Pennsylvania, one of seven critical "swing states". Pennsylvania is likely to play a big role in determining who will win the upcoming US presidential election, Trump or Kamala Harris.

The contest, which began last Saturday, offers $1 million daily to a randomly chosen registered voter in one of these states, leading up to the election on November 5. To enter the contest, participants must be registered voters and sign a PAC petition in support of "free speech and the right to bear arms."

Legal experts, such as Georgetown Law School professor Danielle Lang, have raised alarms that the contest may be subject to legal action. Speaking to AFP, Lang said, "It is illegal to give out money on the condition that recipients register as voters."

"As the terms of this 'contest' to win $1 million require the recipient to be a registered voter in one of seven swing states (or to register if they have not already), the offer violates federal law," she added.

Reports from CNN and 24sight News revealed that the Justice Department's warning letter to Musk's PAC highlights concerns that the whopping one million dollar giveaway may violate federal law, which prohibits offering money to encourage voter registration. Also read | Musk pledges $1mn daily cash giveaways to Trump supporters as 2024 US Election battle heats up What is the $1 million giveaway? Musk, a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, launched the contest in Pennsylvania, one of seven critical "swing states". Pennsylvania is likely to play a big role in determining who will win the upcoming US presidential election, Trump or Kamala Harris. The contest, which began last Saturday, offers $1 million daily to a randomly chosen registered voter in one of these states, leading up to the election on November 5. To enter the contest, participants must be registered voters and sign a PAC petition in support of "free speech and the right to bear arms." Here's why Legal experts, such as Georgetown Law School professor Danielle Lang, have raised alarms that the contest may be subject to legal action. Speaking to AFP, Lang said, "It is illegal to give out money on the condition that recipients register as voters." "As the terms of this 'contest' to win $1 million require the recipient to be a registered voter in one of seven swing states (or to register if they have not already), the offer violates federal law," she added. Musk, the Tesla, and SpaceX CEO, has recently taken an increasingly visible role in Trump's campaign and has even donated $75 million to the America PAC. (With inputs from agencies)

With the 2024 United States presidential election just around the corner, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump have a strong lead in the polls.

With the 2024 United States presidential election just around the corner, neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor former president Donald Trump have a strong lead in the polls. When it comes to elections, past or future, the economy is usually the top concern for voters. Understanding a presidential candidate's economic policies is an important part of making an informed choice regarding who to vote for. A new poll by the Associated Press and NORC shows that Harris is gaining ground on key economic issues that affect the middle class. The poll shows a shift from last month, where Trump had a bigger lead on handling the economy. Now, 46 per cent of voters prefer Harris' middle-class tax policies, compared to 35 per cent for Trump. Harris also has a slight edge on housing costs, according to the polls. Voters are split on who has better plans for grocery prices, gas, job creation, and unemployment. Most voters (62 per cent) think the economy is in bad shape, while 38 per cent say it's not. Trump's critique vs Harris' 'opportunity economy' Trump's campaign is focused on rising inflation and the higher cost of living under President Joe Biden. Since Harris took over as the Democratic nominee in July, she has responded by promoting what she calls an "opportunity economy." As a part of her plan, Harris has promised to help first-time homebuyers with $25,000 for a down payment on a new home. Here's a broad comparison of Trump's and Harris' economic policies: Where do they stand on taxes? One of the biggest differences between Harris and Trump is their tax policy. Also read: US confirms North Korean troops in Russia, says they would be 'legitimate' targets in Ukraine Harris plans to raise the corporate tax rate from 21 per cent to 28 per cent, whereas Trump wants to lower it to 15-20 per cent. On personal taxes, Harris wants to raise the rate for those making over $400,000 by letting the 2017 tax cuts expire. Trump, however, wants to make those tax cuts permanent. What about trade policies? Harris has criticised Trump’s broad tariffs on imports, saying it amounts to a tax on working families, costing each household about $4,000 a year. She prefers a more targeted approach, keeping some tariffs on Chinese imports, like electric vehicles. Trump, on the other hand, has promised a 10-20 per cent tax on most foreign goods, with even higher tariffs on Chinese imports. He also wants to encourage companies to stay in the US by offering lower corporate taxes. How do they differ on regulations? Harris supports raising the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour, offering student debt relief, and expanding enforcement of antitrust laws. On the other hand, Trump wants to cut regulations across the board, speed up mergers and acquisitions, and reclassify more civil servants as political appointees. What are their plans to fight inflation? Harris says her first goal would be to lower food and housing costs for working families. She’s promised to ban price gouging on groceries, help first-time homebuyers, and increase housing supply through incentives. Inflation surged during Biden’s presidency, partly due to Covid-related supply chain issues and the war in Ukraine. However, recently, inflation has started to come down. Trump plans to "end inflation" by increasing oil drilling, which he believes will lower energy prices. He’s also promised to lower interest rates, although that’s something the president can’t control. The former US president also claims deporting undocumented immigrants would ease housing demand.

US elections: Economic policies of Donald Trump and Kamala Harris - A comparison

Outgoing US President Joe Biden added to his long list of gaffes yet again on Tuesday when he called for Donald Trump to be locked up, quickly backtracking from his statement soon after. “If I said this five years ago, you’d lock me up: We gotta lock him up,” the 81-year-old said during a visit to a Democratic campaign office in Concord, New Hampshire.

Election security in focus: Protecting the vote

Donald Trump's campaign has lodged a formal complaint against the UK's Labour Party, accusing it of meddling in the upcoming US presidential election. The complaint, filed with the Federal Election Commission, claims that the British party has been recruiting members to campaign on behalf of Trump's political rival, Democratic Party presidential nominee, US Vice-President Kamala Harris, in key battleground states.

Blatant foreign interference

In a letter rife with historical references, including the American Revolution, Trump's legal team requested an immediate investigation into "blatant foreign interference".

It stated, "When representatives of the British government previously sought to go door-to-door in America, it did not end well for them."

The letter noted the recent 243rd anniversary of the Battle of Yorktown and said "This past week marked the 243 anniversary of the surrender of British forces at the Battle of Yorktown, a military victory that ensured that the United States would be politically independent of Great Britian." Here, Trump's campaign misspelt Britain, whether by mistake or on purpose, it is not known.

The Trump campaign's grievance centres around reports that Labour Party volunteers have been campaigning for Harris. According to the Guardian, these volunteers are campaigning on their own, not in an official capacity.

However, the letter demands an investigation into what it claims are "apparent illegal foreign national contributions made by the Labour Party of the United Kingdom," to Harris's campaign.

It then goes on to refer to a "volunteer exemption" in US election law that allows foreign nationals to volunteer but prohibits compensation of any type.

"They (foreign nationals) may not be compensated, foreign nationals may not make expenditures, and they may not direct or control activities of US campaigns," states the letter.

The complaint cites a since-deleted LinkedIn post by Sofia Patel, head of operations at the Labour Party, in which she reportedly mentioned that 100 current and former party members were heading to the US to campaign.

Trump files complaint against UK Labour Party, claims 'blatant foreign interference' in 2024 US Elections

"Hands off my porn," proclaims the latest election campaign in the United States, urging voters to refrain from voting for Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

While Trump infamously made headlines for his connection to Stormy Daniels, a porn star, the American adult industry believes that if re-elected, he would be the reason for the industry's shutdown. To save their livelihoods, they've launched the #HandsOffMyPorn campaign, spending $200,000 so far on ads.

#HandsOffMyPorn campaign

Thanks to this campaign, people watching porn in America are now seeing ads asking them to vote on Nov 5, to "keep doing this".

Appearing before the pornographic content, porn stars tell the viewer: "Hey, I know you're busy. I know you're doing something. Hold on. If you want to keep doing this, you really need to vote on November 5... Enjoy!"

The campaign, as per AFP, is mainly targeted at men, a demographic in which Trump enjoys a strong lead, all thanks to his machismo-drenched pitch.

According to the Institute for Family Studies, men are four times more likely than women to watch porn. These "public service announcements" are being played for viewers in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia.

Does Trump want to kill the porn industry?

Donald Trump, himself, has no hate for the adult entertainment industry and has not made any statements about shutting it down.

#HandsOffMyPorn campaign Thanks to this campaign, people watching porn in America are now seeing ads asking them to vote on Nov 5, to "keep doing this". Appearing before the pornographic content, porn stars tell the viewer: "Hey, I know you're busy. I know you're doing something. Hold on. If you want to keep doing this, you really need to vote on November 5... Enjoy!" According to the Institute for Family Studies, men are four times more likely than women to watch porn. These "public service announcements" are being played for viewers in battleground states like Pennsylvania, Arizona, and Georgia. Does Trump want to kill the porn industry? Donald Trump, himself, has no hate for the adult entertainment industry and has not made any statements about shutting it down. A judge in Michigan on Monday rejected an effort by the Republican Party to block some Americans who are living overseas from voting in the battleground state.

The Republican National Committee filed a lawsuit earlier this month arguing that election laws in the state improperly allowed US citizens living abroad who had never lived in Michigan - but whose relatives had - to vote there.

Michigan Court of Claims Judge Sima Patel said in a ruling that the language being challenged by Republicans was consistent with federal and state law.

"There is no ground to invalidate it," Patel wrote.

A U.S. citizen who never lived in the US but who has a parent, legal guardian or spouse who last lived in Michigan is eligible to vote in the state so as long as the citizen has not registered or voted in another state, according to Michigan's secretary of state election officials manual.

At the time the lawsuit was filed, RNC Chairman Michael Whatley said citizens living in Michigan should not have "their votes cancelled by those who've never lived in the state."

The RNC did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the ruling.

Some 2.9 million US citizens living abroad were eligible to vote in 2020, though fewer than 8% of them did, according to the Federal Voting Assistance Program, a government entity that helps military members and other US citizens living abroad with election logistics.

Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, served as a high school teacher and football coach in rural Minnesota, in the 1990s.

But the promises were made before Joe Biden dropped out of the race and Harris picked up the torch.

Although people across the country see Democrats as more accepting of LGBTQIA+ rights, this was not always the case.

President Bill Clinton signed the Defence of Marriage Act in 1996, which defined marriage as one between a ‘man and a woman’, curtailing the queer rights movement’s call for marriage equality.

Tim Walz’s ‘Gay-Straight Alliance’ Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, served as a high school teacher and football coach in rural Minnesota, in the 1990s. He became loved by the queer community after he became the faculty advisor to his school’s ‘Gay-Straight Alliance’ and thus opened the avenue for bridging the gap between the queer community with their straight counterparts. Democrats and Queerness The Democratic party’s platform for 2024 includes mention of queer rights and touches upon topics of importance like bringing in legislation to protect queer people from discrimination, support for trans children etc. Clinton also signed the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ legislation, which allowed queer men and women to serve in the military as long as they hid their sexual orientation. Way forward Even though all candidates and both parties have become more vocal about queer issues, the fight for equality continues in the US and the world. The next US President, Democrat or Republican, will define the way queerness is viewed in the country. All the world has to do is wait and all Americans have to do is choose wisely.

Musk pledges $1mn daily cash giveaways to Trump supporters as 2024 US Election battle heats up

With just 15 days left for the U.S. election, Kamala Harris has been focusing intensely on winning over Black male voters. However, her approach has faced criticism, particularly after a recent campaign ad targeting this demographic stirred controversy by taking a dig at Black men’s romantic lives.

The digital ads, which are mainly featured on platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, are styled like dating game shows to get younger audiences engaged in voting. In one of the ads, a man is shown approaching a group of women holding balloons. The women start asking him about his height, income, and whether he works out.

When one of the women asks if he has a plan to vote, the man seems positive in his answers, but then says, “Uh, I didn’t plan on it.”

At this point, the women pop their balloons, and a caption flashes on the screen: “Don’t get popped.” The ad continues with a reminder, “Vote, Election Day is November 5,” and notes that it was funded by Harris’ campaign.

Though this ad has appeared around college campuses, it has also drawn ridicule online, with critics pointing out that 65% of the ad spending was aimed at women.

This comes at a time when new polls suggest that Black voters, who have historically supported Democratic presidential candidates at over 80% since 1994, might be showing less enthusiasm for the party.

In response, Harris has unveiled policies targeted specifically at Black men, including plans to expand access to the cannabis industry and provide more educational opportunities that could lead to well-paying jobs, even for those without college degrees.
