The study, which was hailed by experts as one of the most comprehensive annual examinations of the death penalty, also pointed out that the number of executions has been rapidly declining since the 1990s and it is almost half of that in the 2000s.&nbsp;

How 2022 turned into a 'year of botched executions' for the United States

US&nbsp;stock indexes closed sharply lower on Thursday (December 15), with each of the major averages suffering their biggest daily percentage drop in weeks, as fears intensified that the Federal Reserve's battle against inflation using aggressive interest rate hikes could lead to a recession.

The US&nbsp;central bank hiked rates by 50 basis points (bps) on Wednesday as was widely expected, downsizing from the consecutive 75 bps hikes at its prior four meetings, but Fed Chair Jerome Powell warned recent signs of inflation were not enough to convince Fed the battle against rising prices had been won.

“The investors were hoping that the Fed would hint that they will finish their rate tightening program by the first quarter of 2023 and begin a rate reduction program by the end of the year,”said Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research.

“It (the Fed) delayed when they are likely to start cutting interest rates until 2024. So I think that's what's causing investors to say time to get defensive once again because a recession is likely around the corner.”

The Fed projected continued rate hikes to above 5% in 2023, a level not seen since a steep economic downturn in 2007.

“The Fed doesn't care about the stock market. They've said it multiple times. But investors seem to feel that because the Federal Reserve for the last 20 years has come to a rescue every time, that they're going to do it this time.’ said Ken Moraif, founder and CEO of Retirement Planners of America.

“If you think of inflation as cancer, you think of recession is the flu. Given a choice of which one you want, it's the flu. And so if they're going to drive us into a recession, that's they're going to do it.”

The S&amp;P 500 lost 99.57 points, or 2.49%, to end at 3,895.75 points, while the Nasdaq Composite lost 360.36 points, or 3.19%, to 10,810.53.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 764.13 points, or 2.25%, to 33,202.22.

A United States-based company called Omnilter has created software which uses artificial intelligence to monitor security cameras to spot an active shooter for potential gun violence before the trigger is pulled. The military-inspired AI technology reportedly works on real-time target recognition and threat classification.&nbsp;

In 2021, the US witnessed at least 61 active shooter incidents, said the FBI, which was the highest in the last two decades. Earlier this year at least two teachers and 19 children were killed when a shooter opened fire in a school in Uvalde, Texas, making the incident one of the deadliest school shootings that the country has seen in the last 10 years.&nbsp;

According to the company’s CEO, Dave Fraser, the AI-monitored security cameras can help detect a potential gun violence threat which would give people some time to prepare and take action by locking the doors and contacting the police with “rich information”, he said in an interview with Reuters.&nbsp;

He noted how in a number of active shooter situations the assailants are visible on security cameras for seconds or even minutes. Fraser also gave the example of the Parkland high school shooting, where 17 people were killed in 2018 and said that the shooter was seen preparing for the attack near one of the stairwells.&nbsp;

According to the US bureau of labour statistics, there are more than 70 million security cameras across the country. However, less than one per cent are actively monitored, said Fraser, therefore, the software does the monitoring 24 hours, seven days a week and is always on alert. According to the company’s website, the software uses a “multi-dimensional process” to assess, detect, and analyse an active shooter in “fractions of a second”.&nbsp;

The AI detects “handguns and rifles by essentially taking the place of a human being. By watching the video feeds,” said the Omnilert CEO to NBC’s News4. He added that subsequently, the information is passed on to an assigned operator who confirms the threat and initiates a safety plan.&nbsp;

Notably, he also claims that the AI can identify the difference between a potential shooter and an officer who is walking in with a weapon and said that the technology is not simply recognising guns but, “it actually needs to identify that there's a threat,” said the media report. Once the threat is detected the system sends images of the shooter as well as their exact location.&nbsp;

However, the President of National School Safety and Security Services, Kenneth Trump, told Reuters that while technology could be useful their first and best line of defence in active shooter situations should be well-trained teachers and students.&nbsp;

He added that there is a skewed focus on “target hardening” and people investing more in technology as opposed to staff training, prevention, and recognising the warning signs, and unless that happens problems will continue.&nbsp;

The United States is in the midst of finalising plans to send the Patriot missile defence system to Ukraine, said media reports citing officials, while a formal announcement is awaited. The ground-based air defence system is something Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky&nbsp;has sought from its western allies for some time now.&nbsp;

While it is considered one of the most advanced air defence systems by the US, there are reports citing experts saying that it might not be effective enough for the conflict in Ukraine. This comes as Kyiv is facing massive blackouts affecting millions and according to the United Nations half of the country’s energy infrastructure has been attacked and destroyed reportedly by <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/russia-fires-barrage-of-missile-across-ukraine-540716">Russian missiles</a> and drones.&nbsp;

What is the Patriot missile system?

The MIM-104 Patriot is the US army’s top-tier surface-to-air guided missile system which is manufactured by the Virginia-based Raytheon Technologies. The defence system is known for targeting ballistic and cruise missiles as well as manned and unmanned aircraft that was first deployed in the 1980s.&nbsp;

A typical Patriot battery includes eight launchers which can hold up to four missile interceptors each, it is also equipped with ground radar to detect and track its target, computers, power generating equipment, and a control station. Therefore, unlike other smaller air defence systems, the Patriot requires at least 90 personnel to properly operate it, the training for which takes months.&nbsp;

However, Washington has previously trained Ukrainian troops on how to operate their other complex missile systems which include High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMRAS). Additionally,&nbsp;the US has also&nbsp;previously sent mid-range defensive National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS)&nbsp;to Ukraine.&nbsp;

The US Army said that it currently has 16 Patriot battalions. Notably, the Patriot batteries are regularly deployed across the world, they are currently being operated in or bought by at least 16 countries, including, Taiwan, Japan, Israel, South Korea, Qatar, and so on, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp;

The media reports citing officials also said that once approved the missile defence system will be sent in a matter of days and the Ukrainian army personnel will be trained to use them at a US Army base in Grafenwoehr, Germany.&nbsp;

This comes as Kyiv has sought these missiles for months now but there have been several obstacles including logistical challenges of delivering the air defence system as well as operating it, reported CNN citing an official.&nbsp;

Another former senior military official with the knowledge system said that while it will send a strong message and will be effective against short-range ballistic missiles, one battery will not be a game changer for the conflict. Echoing a similar sentiment, an official at the CSIS, Tom Karako told the AP that the Patriot system can help defend Ukraine against Iran-supplied ballistic missiles.&nbsp;

He added that while the air defence system could also intercept a tactical nuclear device if Russian President Vladimir Putin were to move forward with his veiled threats of using them made earlier, it would depend on how it is delivered. Furthermore, the Patriot is not known for its performance against small drones.&nbsp;

In 2017, when Houthis attacked the US Patriot system in Saudi Arabia with Qasef kamikaze drones they targeted the air defence system’s radar which Karako says is a powerful one and better at identifying targets than the Ukrainian S-300 system. However, Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said that the recent slowing down has not been reassuring that the fight has been won.

Why is the Fed raising the interest rates?

When an economy is booming and inflation is on the rise, an increase in the interest rates slows everything down by making borrowing more expensive and&nbsp;discouraging consumers and businesses to spend more. This decrease in spending typically slows the economy and cools down inflation.&nbsp;

These hikes are also in line with the central bank’s goal to push inflation down to two per cent. So far, the Feds have been aggressively raising the interest rate as the country continues to battle high inflation, this time around, the&nbsp;benchmark was raised&nbsp;by half a point as opposed to the string of four straight three-quarter point hikes&nbsp;in the past couple of months.&nbsp;

However, this trend may continue for the upcoming year as it is projected that the rates would rise above five per cent by the end of next year, which is now somewhere between the 4.25 per cent to 4.5 per cent range.&nbsp;

Therefore, McBride suggests transferring any balances on the credit cards to a zero-rate balance transfer card which locks in a zero rate between a year and 21 months, this would “insulate you from rate hikes” giving the consumer a “clear runway” to pay off their debt. He added, “Less debt and more savings will enable you to better weather rising interest rates, and is especially valuable if the economy sours.”

As for mortgages, the recent Fed hike would affect millions. Freddie Mac, an enterprise promoting home lending, said that with every percentage point increase in mortgage rates, which is eventually affected by the increase in the central bank’s benchmark rate, households which can afford a $400,000 mortgage decline by three to four million.&nbsp;

Furthermore, according to the federally funded company, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage average was 6.33 per cent by the end of the second week of December which is more than double the same time last year, for the first time in US history. Currently, the rate of unemployment is increasing by 0.5 per cent annually and by the end of 2023, it would be well beyond what has historically been associated with recession. However, Powell has said that they don’t “talk about this kind of recession, that kind of a recession. We just make these forecasts.”

During the press conference, following the meeting of the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC), he also said that there is no “completely painless way to restore price stability” and they are doing the best they can. However, even with the recent aggressive hikes, inflation remains at least three times higher than their target and they speculate it will take at least three years for things to fall back.&nbsp;
