A former senior FBI agent in New York had been arrested due to his affiliations with a Russian oligarch,&nbsp;ABC News reported on Monday.&nbsp;Charles McGonigal, a special agent in charge of counterintelligence at the FBI's New York Field Office, has been&nbsp;arrested because of his ties with Oleg Deripaska, a Russian billionaire who the US has sanctioned and who was criminally accused last year of breaching those sanctions.

McGonigal left the FBI in 2018. He was detained on Saturday afternoon after arriving at JFK Airport from Sri Lanka, according to the sources.

The Justice Department claims that in 2021, McGonigal and Shestakov, two FBI oligarch investigators, agreed to look into a rival Russian tycoon in exchange for money from Deripaska. In order to conceal the fact that Deripaska was paying McGonigal and Shestakov, it is alleged that they utilised phoney firms to receive money and forged signatures.

Along with allegations of breaking sanctions, both of them are accused of money laundering. The maximum jail time for each of the four offences is 20 years.

"The FBI is committed to the enforcement of economic sanctions designed to protect the United States and our allies, especially against hostile activities of a foreign government and its actors," FBI Assistant Director in Charge Michael Driscoll said in a statement. "Russian oligarchs like Oleg Deripaska perform global malign influence on behalf of the Kremlin and are associated with acts of bribery, extortion, and violence."

"As alleged, Mr. McGonigal and Mr. Shestakov, both US&nbsp;citizens, acted on behalf of Deripaska and fraudulently used a US&nbsp;entity to obscure their activity in violation of US&nbsp;sanctions. After sanctions are imposed, they must be enforced equally against all US&nbsp;citizens in order to be successful. There are no exceptions for anyone, including a former FBI official like Mr. McGonigal,"&nbsp;Driscoll added.&nbsp;

Shestakov, 69, who was based in Morris, Connecticut, is also accused of lying to FBI agents about his connection with Deripaska in November 2021. He faces one count of making false statements in addition to the other accusations.

According to Treasury officials, Deripaska, an aluminum mogul, was one of twenty Russians sanctioned by the Treasury Department in 2018 as retaliation for "the Russian government's continuous and more nefarious operations throughout the globe."

The militant group has been fighting since 2006 to topple the country’s government. Last year, as a part of the ongoing support by US President Joe Biden’s administration, Washington approved Pentagon’s request to redeploy troops in the region to counter the militant group.&nbsp;

Other documents were from when he served as the vice president in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017, said Bauer. This comes after a consensual DOJ search which lasted for at least 12 hours. He added, “DOJ also took for further review personally handwritten notes from the vice-presidential years.”&nbsp;

Biden’s personal attorney also said that the president offered access “to his home to allow DOJ to conduct a search of the entire premises for potential vice-presidential records and potential classified material.” Furthermore, Bauer said that investigators had full access to Biden’s home which included, “personally handwritten notes, files, papers, binders, memorabilia, to-do lists, schedules, and reminders going back decades.”

Neither the president nor the first lady Jill Biden was present at their Delaware residence during the search which was coordinated by the Justice Department investigators and the president’s personal and White House lawyers, said special counsel to the president, Richard Sauber.&nbsp;

“The President and his team are working swiftly to ensure DOJ and the Special Counsel have what they need to conduct a thorough review,” said Sauber. He added, “Since the beginning, the President has been committed to handling this responsibly because he takes this seriously.” &nbsp;

“DOJ requested that the search not be made public in advance, in accordance with its standard procedures, and we agreed to cooperate,” said Bauer, on Saturday. He added, “As noted in the statement&nbsp;we released on January 14, we have attempted to balance the importance of public transparency where appropriate with the established norms and limitations necessary to protect the investigation’s integrity.”

We are fully cooperating&nbsp;to getting this resolved quickly, I think you're&nbsp;going to find there’s nothing there. I have no regrets".&nbsp;

Earlier this month, the White House and Biden’s attorneys first acknowledged the claims that they found the classified documents while “packing files housed in a locked closet to prepare to vacate office space” back in November referring to Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, DC.

Since then Biden’s residence in Delaware as well as the aforementioned centre which Biden used sometimes as an office space between 2017 and 2020 have been searched multiple times. This also comes days after Attorney General, Merrick Garland, appointed special counsel Robert Hur a former US attorney from Maryland to oversee the DOJ investigation into the incumbent president’s alleged mishandling of the documents.&nbsp;

The Department of Justice (DOJ) found additional classified documents during a search of United States President Joe Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Friday (January 20), said his personal attorney Bob Bauer in a statement late Saturday.

According to Bauer, at least six more items including “documents with classification markings and surrounding material” were recovered dating back to the incumbent president’s tenure as a Senator from Delaware between 1973 to 2009. Other documents were from when he served as the vice president in the Obama administration from 2009 to 2017, said Bauer. This comes after a consensual DOJ search which lasted for at least 12 hours. He added, “DOJ also took for further review personally handwritten notes from the vice-presidential years.” Biden’s personal attorney also said that the president offered access “to his home to allow DOJ to conduct a search of the entire premises for potential vice-presidential records and potential classified material.” Furthermore, Bauer said that investigators had full access to Biden’s home which included, “personally handwritten notes, files, papers, binders, memorabilia, to-do lists, schedules, and reminders going back decades.” ALSO READ | US President Biden classified documents investigation: What we know so far Neither the president nor the first lady Jill Biden was present at their Delaware residence during the search which was coordinated by the Justice Department investigators and the president’s personal and White House lawyers, said special counsel to the president, Richard Sauber. “The President and his team are working swiftly to ensure DOJ and the Special Counsel have what they need to conduct a thorough review,” said Sauber. He added, “Since the beginning, the President has been committed to handling this responsibly because he takes this seriously.” “DOJ requested that the search not be made public in advance, in accordance with its standard procedures, and we agreed to cooperate,” said Bauer, on Saturday.
