The Justice Department ended its prosecution on Wednesday of two former co-defendants of President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump-0" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a> who were accused of mishandling classified documents.
Special Counsel Jack Smith dropped the case against Trump after he won November's election but charges were still pending against Walt Nauta, Trump's valet, and Carlos De Oliveira, a property manager at the president's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee, threw out the case in July but Smith had appealed the dismissal of the charges against Nauta and De Oliveira to the 11th US Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.

The Justice Department, which is now led by Trump appointees, said in a filing with the 11th Circuit Court that it was abandoning its appeal.
No reason was given for the move, which the appeals court is likely to accept, bringing the case to an end.
Nauta, Trump's long-time valet, and De Oliveira had pleaded not guilty to charges of making false statements and obstructing justice.

Trump was accused by the special counsel of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 election he lost to Democrat Joe Biden and stashing classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago home after leaving the White House at the end of his first term.
Trump allegedly kept the top secret documents -- which included records from the Pentagon and CIA -- unsecured at Mar-a-Lago and thwarted efforts to retrieve them.

Dozens of Colombian illegal migrants arrived home from the United States Tuesday, grateful for an end to a gruelling deportation ordeal at the heart of a bitter row between the two countries.
Bogota sent two air force planes to fetch some 200 of its nationals, including children, from California and Texas after initially turning back two US military planes carrying them.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro refused the first planes after taking umbrage at the treatment meted out to the expelled Brazilian migrants flown home from the United States last week, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles.

Petro posted photographs on social media Tuesday of his compatriots disembarking in Bogota without cuffs and wrote: "They are Colombians, free and dignified, and in their homeland where they are loved."
He added: "The migrant is not a criminal but a human being who wants to work and progress, live life."
Carlos Gomez, one of the deportees, said he had left with his 17-year-old son for the United States two weeks ago seeking "a better future."

What he found was not that.
"It is not an American dream, it is an American nightmare," Gomez told journalists on his return to Bogota.
At the migrant detention centre where they were held, Gomez claimed the food was "horrible," the guards abusive, and the conditions "worse than (those of) a prisoner."
Then came the attempted initial deportation from San Diego, with Gomez claiming he and his teenage son were handcuffed and shackled.

Petro, Colombia's first-ever leftist president, stepped back from the brink of a full-blown trade war with the United States on Sunday after Trump threatened sanctions and tariffs on exports despite a free-trade agreement between the two countries.
The US embassy in Bogota suspended visa applications.
Petro insisted he would only accept migrants who were not treated "like criminals."
Another deportee, who identified himself only as Daniel, told reporters at Bogota's El Dorado airport that he and other migrants were roughly treated by deportation officials: their few belongings seized before they were cuffed and chained for one of the rejected US flights "as if we were... wanted criminals."

Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Murillo insisted Tuesday that none of the deportees, including 21 children and two pregnant women, were wanted for a crime in either country.
Petro, a former guerrilla, was the first Latin American leader to defy Trump over his mass deportation plans.
He threatened retaliatory steps, but his resistance fizzled in the face of Trump's threats and an outcry at home over what many saw as a hot-headed handling of the dispute.
"On both sides, they made mistakes. They insulted each other, and they took decisions that should not have been taken," Colombian ex-president Juan Manuel Santos told AFP Tuesday at an event in Washington.
"Fortunately, they ended up doing the right thing, which they should have done from the beginning -- sit down and talk."
Trump claimed victory Monday, telling a lawmakers' retreat in Miami that "America is respected again."&nbsp;
He insisted that "we've made it clear to every country that they will be taking back (their) people, that we're sending out the criminals... the illegal aliens coming from their countries."
Brazil on Monday summoned the top US envoy to the country to explain the "degrading treatment" meted out to its own nationals.
The Republican's plans for mass migrant deportations have put him on a potential collision course with governments in Latin America -- the original home of most of the United States' estimated 11 million undocumented migrants.
Since he took office a week ago, thousands of people have been sent back to countries including Guatemala and Mexico.
While previous US administrations also routinely expelled illegal migrants, Trump has vowed the biggest deportation wave in history.
Honduras has called an urgent meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on Thursday to discuss migration issues.

In a move to comply with US President Donald Trump's order, Google is set to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America on Google Maps in the US.
This comes after the Trump administration&rsquo;s Interior Department on Friday officially renamed the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.&nbsp;
Following this, the Gulf of Mexico will soon be renamed the &ldquo;Gulf of America,&rdquo; and Alaska&rsquo;s Denali mountain will revert to its former name of Mount McKinley in the app.&nbsp;

US President<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/donald-trump-0" rel="dofollow"> Donald Trump</a> proposed to abolish the income tax for American citizens, stressing that it would boost disposable income for individuals and families.&nbsp;
Trump described the move as a return to the old American practices, which helped drive national prosperity and a step that made America richer.&nbsp;
"It&rsquo;s time for the United States to return to the system that made us richer and more powerful than ever before&hellip;," he said on Monday.&nbsp;

The US president further said that he would introduce across-the-board import tariffs to replace income tax.
"Instead of taxing our citizens to enrich foreign nations, we should be taxing foreign nations to enrich our citizens. It will be massive amounts of money pouring into our treasury coming from foreign sources," Trump added.
He noted that the US was the wealthiest from 1870 to 1913 when a tariff-based economic system was in place. Trump said that import tariffs will help offset the revenue shortfall from income tax reductions that are being proposed by him.

<h2>What does the proposal include?</h2>
The proposal made by Trump includes replacing income tax, which is a key contributor to federal revenue, with tariffs on imported goods.&nbsp;
Trump also announced to create the External Revenue Service, a new body under his administration, which will be responsible for managing tariffs and related revenues.&nbsp;

The plan has attracted both support and criticism. The economists have warned of potential inflationary pressures and sustained high interest rates due to increased import costs.&nbsp;
Moreover, the Congress has also opposed it, with lawmakers raising concerns about potential deficits and logistical hurdles in implementing the overhaul.
However, Trump emphasised his commitment to prioritising American families and workers. "We will immediately begin overhauling our trade system to protect American interests,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday (Jan 28) said that the Russian special services are doing everything possible to ensure the safety of Russian President Vladimir Putin.&nbsp;
This comes after Conservative American pundit Tucker Carlson accused former US President Joe Biden's administration of trying to assassinate Putin.&nbsp;
Commenting on Carlson's statement, Peskov said, "The Russian special services are constantly taking all the necessary measures to ensure public safety, and, of course, the safety of those who are under state protection. This concerns first and foremost the head of the state."
<h2>'Tried to kill Putin'</h2>
Carlson in the latest episode of his podcast "The Tucker Carlson Show", said, "The Biden administration did, they tried to kill Putin."
&ldquo;Which is insane,&rdquo; Carlson added. &ldquo;That&rsquo;s demented, that you would even think of something like that. So why were they? Because chaos is a screen that protects them.&rdquo;
However, Carlson did not provide any evidence for his accusation against the Biden administration.&nbsp;
Carlson was also a US journalist, who was ousted from Fox News in 2023, amid the channel's legal troubles over its airing of inaccurate claims of electoral fraud in the 2020 US presidential race.&nbsp;
In his show, Carlson also criticised US military aid for Kyiv and called Ukraine "not a democracy".&nbsp;
Moreover, he visited Moscow in February last year for a widely planned softball sit-down interview with Russian President Putin and went to Russia again in December to interview Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.&nbsp;
