Even after 21 years, the memories of September 11, or 9/11, remain the same: bitter, horrific, and of one of the worst encounters a country has had with terrorists.

This all began when, on September 11, 2001, two aircraft attacked the World Trade Center in New York, and a third aircraft crashed outside of Washington, DC, into the Pentagon while the fourth went down in Pennsylvania.

Who did this? Al-Qaeda, an Islamic extremist organisation led by Osama bin Laden and known for its terror, hijacked four aircraft and used them as a means for suicide attacks in the United States. It was claimed that Laden provided funds for the attack.

The attack claimed the lives of over 3,000 people and injured thousands more.

Here are some facts you need to know about the 9/11 attack:

The CIA had informed President Clinton in his daily brief on December 4, 1998, that Laden was preparing to hijack US aircraft and was planning to conduct strikes.

The World Trade Centre was targeted earlier. On February 26, 1993, a bomb was placed in a car parked at the World Trade Centre, which when blasted claimed the lives of six people and injured over a thousand people. The Sunni terrorist, Ramzi Yousef, who deactivated the device, revealed that he intended to kill over 250,000 people, DNA reported.

The US tried multiple attempts to kill Osama bin Laden before 9/11, but was delayed and then revived, but was hampered by military leaders' reservations about relying on Aghan tribal chiefs.

An Orthodox Jewish university in New York was given temporary permission by the US Supreme Court to deny official recognition to an LGBTQ student group on Friday (September 9).

This permission comes after the university appealed to the court for an expedited ruling after a New York judge ordered the university to permit the Pride Alliance to form a student group, allowing them access to all services and facilities in the institute.

The university, in a statement, said, "As a deeply religious Jewish university, Yeshiva cannot comply with that order because doing so would violate its sincere religious beliefs about how to form its undergraduate students in Torah values," AFP reported.

The group was formed in 2018 to hold meetings, organise lectures and participate in activities, and applied for its official recognition as a student group.

A new challenge is here on TikTok, and it is not good news for car owners in the United States. A number of cars have been stolen all around the country following a dangerous challenge on the social media app that asks teenagers to steal a specific type of cars using just a USB cord.

According to the police, the main target of the challenge are 2010-2021 Kia and Hyundai cars which still use mechanical keys and not electronic systems. It makes the cars more vulnerable to theft and the challenge asks the users on the app to take advantage of that and steal it using minimal tools.

The Biden administration has imposed fresh sanctions on Iran's Ministry of Intelligence and Security over what it called "malign cyber activity," as the two nations battle to find a way back into the 2015 nuclear deal.

The United States Treasury Department stated on Friday that the penalties were in reaction to a cyberattack in July that damaged official websites in Albania and was attributed to Tehran by Washington and Tirana.

“Iran’s cyber attack against Albania disregards norms of responsible peacetime State behavior in cyberspace, which includes a norm on refraining from damaging critical infrastructure that provides services to the public,” Treasury official Brian Nelson said in a statement.

“We will not tolerate Iran’s increasingly aggressive cyber activities targeting the United States or our allies and partners.”

Iran has deemed the claims that it was behind the event as "baseless," and the July cyberattack has led to a diplomatic crisis between Albania and Iran.

“We will not tolerate Iran’s increasingly aggressive cyber activities targeting the United States or our allies and partners.” Iran has deemed the claims that it was behind the event as "baseless," and the July cyberattack has led to a diplomatic crisis between Albania and Iran. United States prosecutors said on Thursday that former president Donald Trump may not have returned all the classified documents in his possession despite FBI raiding his Mar-a-Lago residence on August 8. They said that it is possible that there are more such documents in other places owned by Trump and went on to call it a “a potential national security risk that needs investigation”.

The remarks were made in the latest filing from the Department of Justice in front of District Judge Aileen Cannon who ordered a “special master” to be appointed in order to impartially examine the documents found during the raid – a move that the DOJ has opposed from the very beginning.

The DOJ maintained their stance that Trump has removed a number of documents from the White House after his term ended and asked for permission to examine all of the 11,000 documents.

"This motion is limited to ... the seized classified records because those aspects of the order will cause the most immediate and serious harms to the government and the public," the filing stated.

In the detailed list of items found during the raid, the FBI listed 48 empty folders which were labelled “classified” and 42 which were “meant to be returned to either a staff secretary or military aide”.

While the DOJ was not certain, they hinted that more documents can be missing from the folders.

"Without a stay, the government and the public will also suffer irreparable harm from the undue delay to the criminal investigation," prosecutors wrote in the filing according to Reuters.

"The injunction against using classified records in the criminal investigation could impede efforts to identify the existence of any additional classified records that are not being properly stored - which itself presents the potential for ongoing risk to national security," they added.

General Charles Flynn, commander of the US Army in the Pacific, stated that even after the joint training they were employed in, he is not in a hurry to remove rocket launchers and other equipment from a Japanese army camp on the edge of the East China Sea.

He told Reuters during a visit to the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force facility on Amami Oshima, a group of islands extending toward Taiwan, on Thursday that "some of the equipment we are just going to leave here" until the following joint exercises. It's a chance for us to continue improving our capabilities, he continued.

The equipment might stay in Amami for a few more months because there are two more joint training exercises planned for this year. It contains two High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), which Washington has also handed to Ukraine to aid it in its conflict with Russia and are capable of firing projectiles as far as 500 km (310 miles).

As tensions with China over Taiwan rise, using training exercises like the recently concluded Orient Shield drill could be a simple and rapid option for Washington to redeploy some forces in East Asia, even if only briefly.

Camp Amami, which was inaugurated in 2019, is one of a number of military camps Japan is constructing on its southwest islands for anti-ship and anti-aircraft missile units in an effort to fend off any attack from China.

General Yoshihide Yoshida, the head of staff of the Japanese army, accompanied Flynn to Amami. His visit coincides with Tokyo's plans to strengthen its armed forces in response to what it perceives as an increasing threat from China and Russia following Moscow's attack on Ukraine.

It disclosed a plan to equip longer-range missiles last month as part of a significant increase in defence spending that will also raise funding for joint exercises with American soldiers.
