US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Liz Truss on Wednesday (September 22) said that they want to ensure the Good Friday Agreement is protected. The agreement sealed in 1998 brought peace to Northern Ireland. Biden and Truss, who met just days after Queen Elizabeth's funeral were talking on the sidelines of United Nations General Assembly.

"We both are committed to protecting the Good Friday Agreement in Northern Ireland. I'm looking forward to hearing what's on your mind and how we can continue to cooperate," Biden told Truss ahead of their talks.

Truss told him: "And of course, I'm looking forward to discussing the Belfast Good Friday Agreement, and how we make sure that's upheld into the future."

Despite her assurances, the two leaders are trying to avoid tensions over Northern Ireland.

As a member of parliament, Truss introduced legislation to undo the Northern Ireland Protocol, which was part of Britain's withdrawal agreement from the European Union. It prioritized protecting the Good Friday Agreement, or Belfast Agreement, for peace in the British-run region.

Biden has been insistent that Britain do nothing that could endanger a quarter century of peace in Northern Ireland.

The situation between China - Taiwan was already delicate and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei, Taiwan's capital, added fuel to the fire. China's Foreign Ministry warned Washington that it would have to "pay the price". Beijing has declared live-fire military exercises off Taiwan's coast in the coming days. Let's get to know about it -

China-Taiwan Conflict -

The war between China and Taiwan started in 1949 when they were separated in a Civil War. This Chinese Civil War ended with the victory of the Communists under the leadership of Mao Zedong.

Taiwan, which has since been governed independently, is officially known as the ''Republic of China'' while the mainland is called the ''People's Republic of China". Despite this, however, China considers Taiwan as its part and advocates gaining control over it by any means necessary.

In the 1980s, when China-Taiwan relations showed potential for improvement, China proposed a 'one country, two systems approach. Under which Taiwan will be given autonomy if it accepts reunification with China. However, Taiwan turned down this offer.

In 2000, Chen Shui-bian was elected President of Taiwan who openly supported Taiwan's independence. This thing left China exasperated. Since then relations between Taiwan and China have remained tense.

Overall, Taiwan sees itself as a separate country, while China considers Taiwan as its part. The same fight is still going on between China and Taiwan for their rights, which can also take the form of war in the coming times.

What is the role of the US ?

America is considered Taiwan's most important and only friend. From the Second World War until 1979, the relations between the two countries remained very close. Then in the year 1979, the then US President Jimmy Carter broke his diplomatic relations with Taiwan, taking the initiative to strengthen relations with China.

However, then the US Congress passed the 'Taiwan Relations Act' in response, under which it was decided that America would supply military weapons to Taiwan and if China attacks Taiwan in any way, America will take it very seriously.

The greatest tension between the US and China over Taiwan was seen when China conducted missile tests in 1996 to influence Taiwan's presidential election in its way, in response to which the then US President Bill Clinton launched massive US military power. It was called the largest US military demonstration in Asia since the Vietnam War.

Former U.S President Donald Trump has always been in support of Taiwan and now US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s move to visit Taipei has also shown President Biden's support too. Biden confirmed that the US would come to Taiwan’s defence if China attacked.

What is One-China Policy?

Under China's "One-China Policy", China considers Taiwan as its part. It refers to the United States' policy of strategic ambiguity which accepts that all "Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait is only one China and that Taiwan is a part of China."

The policy says that if a country wants to establish diplomatic relations with China(People's Republic of China), then it will have to end its diplomatic relations with Taiwan(Republic of China).

Beijing considers Taiwan its part and will do everything possible for this. Now it has to be seen that like the Russia-Ukraine war, this matter also does not take a terrible form.

What is China-Taiwan conflict? And role of United States

The United States Federal Reserve has raised its key interest rate by three-quarters of a point for the third time in a row as it continues its fight to control the rising inflation. As a result, the benchmark short-term rate currently ranges between 3 per cent and 3.25 per cent – the highest in nearly 14 years.

However, it is showing no signs of stopping as the officials have forecasted that the rates can go up once again, and by 2023, it can be somewhere around 4.4 per cent – one point more than the June forecast.

The rise in borrowing rates will affect several individuals as well as business loans in the US and it will make mortgaging a car or getting a loan costlier. The goal is to decrease the amount of borrowing from financial institutions which can result in the cooling down of the economy for some time.

According to CNBC, the Federal Reserve believes that this can be a “soft landing” for the economy which will allow them to control inflation by growing slowly for the time period.

The United Nations chief said on Wednesday that it was time for "meaningful action" on the issue of compensation for damage wrought by the climate crisis, especially in developing countries.

Ahead of the forthcoming COP27 UN climate summit in Egypt, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi -- the latter appearing by video link -- co-hosted a meeting of world leaders for "frank exchanges" on climate action.

"My messages were stark," Guterres told reporters at the UN General Assembly following the meeting.

"On the climate emergency: The 1.5-degrees limit is on life support –- and it is fading fast," he said, referring to the Paris accord goal of limiting long-term warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

"You have all seen the appalling images from (flooding in) Pakistan. This is happening at just 1.2 degrees of global warming, and we are headed for over three degrees."

He called on governments to tackle "four burning issues" between now and COP27: greater ambition to keep the 1.5C possible; meeting financial commitments to the developing world; increasing support for adaptation measures, and the issue of "loss and damage".

This last point has become a critical area in climate negotiations. It concerns damage already caused by multiplying extreme weather events, which neither the measures to mitigate global warming nor those to adapt to its impacts have been able to prevent.

Developing nations argue that historic polluters have a moral imperative to pay for the loss and damage, but the idea was shot down by rich nations at COP26, who offered only to start talking about the issue at COP27.

A few days ago, the group of least developed countries meeting in Dakar once more pushed on the issue, calling for the establishment of a "funding mechanism" to deal with the damage caused by global warming.

"I hope COP27 in Egypt will take it up, as a matter of climate justice, international solidarity and building trust," said Guterres.

US: Crime podcasts can sometimes change the course of justice

NASA said Wednesday it had successfully trialed the fueling process for its new rocket, after technical issues a few weeks ago halted two attempts to get the behemoth off the ground and headed towards the Moon.

"All of the objectives that we set out to do we were able to accomplish today," said Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, launch director of the program called Artemis 1.

The unmanned mission hopes to test the new 30-story SLS rocket as well as the unmanned Orion capsule that sits atop it, in preparation for future Moon-bound journeys with humans aboard.

The last attempt in early September to launch NASA's most powerful rocket yet had to be aborted because of a leak while its cryogenic fuels -- liquid hydrogen and oxygen -- were being pumped into the rocket's tanks.

Repairs were carried out and Wednesday's test involved filling those tanks again.

Though a small hydrogen leak was detected during the test, NASA engineers were able to get it under control.

Last week NASA said it is now aiming for September 27 as the next date for liftoff. October 2 was set as a backup date.

"Teams will evaluate the data from the test, along with weather and other factors, before confirming readiness to proceed into the next launch opportunity," NASA said.

Asked about the timing of the next launch attempt, Blackwell-Thompson declined to comment, though she said she was "extremely encouraged by the test today."

US officials are also keeping a close eye on Hurricane Fiona's trajectory off the coast in the Atlantic.

For the September 27 date to be possible, NASA must receive a waiver to avoid retesting the batteries on a detonation system used to destroy the rocket if it strays uncontrollably off course.

The next mission, Artemis 2, would take astronauts to the Moon without landing on its surface, while the third -- set for the mid-2020s -- would see the first woman and person of color on lunar soil.

NASA wants to build a lunar space station called Gateway and keep a sustained presence on the Moon to gain insight into how to survive very long space missions, ahead of a mission to Mars in the 2030s.

Also Watch: New island formed in Pacific ocean as Home reef erupts eight times in 48 hours Last week NASA said it is now aiming for September 27 as the next date for liftoff. October 2 was set as a backup date. "Teams will evaluate the data from the test, along with weather and other factors, before confirming readiness to proceed into the next launch opportunity," NASA said. Asked about the timing of the next launch attempt, Blackwell-Thompson declined to comment, though she said she was "extremely encouraged by the test today." US officials are also keeping a close eye on Hurricane Fiona's trajectory off the coast in the Atlantic. The United States plans to resume full immigrant visa processing in Havana for the first time since 2017, a move that follows high-level talks earlier this year between the two countries, US officials said on Wednesday.

The change, set to be implemented in early 2023, will allow Cubans applying for family-based immigrant visas to undergo an interview in Havana instead of travelling to the South American country of Guyana, the US Department of State said.

American and Cuban officials held migration talks in Washington in April, the highest-level such discussions since US President Joe Biden took office in 2021. Tensions between Washington and Havana over the Cuban government's crackdown on protests and continuing American sanctions on the Communist-ruled island have made cooperation on migration and other issues challenging.

The United States wants Cuba to take back more deportees from among the record numbers of Cubans arriving at the US-Mexican border, Reuters reported.

As part of the migration restart, the United States in August restarted the Cuban Family Reunification Parole Programme, which provides a legal way for Cuban families to be reunited in the United States, and increased embassy personnel to handle those cases.

A discrimination case alleging McDonald's refuses to advertise on Beck-owned media networks has received a go-ahead signal from a federal judge.

In a complaint first filed in May 2021, black media entrepreneur Byron Allen charged the fast food giant with using a racially biased contradicting method.

The lawsuit, however, was dismissed by a federal judge in December as the accusations were not adequately supported. The same judge on Friday rejected McDonald's bid to dismiss the case, allowing it to proceed after a protracted legal dispute.

AFP reported that Allen, owner of Entertainment Studios Networks and the Werther group, claimed that McDonald's created a "two-tiered, race-based system and shut plaintiff out of the general market (i.e., white-owned media) tier," AFP reported.

Furthermore, Allen argued that McDonald's has a separate advertising agreement with an agency for "African-American media" with the intention of spending a minimum amount of money compared to its general budget.

Allen claimed that his company produced content for diverse viewers, particularly after buying the Weather Channel in 2018 and that McDonald's had run advertisements on similarly positioned white-owned networks.

Loretta Lynch, the current partner at the legal firm, Weiss, defending McDonald, said that Allen's lawsuit is about revenue, not a race. She further claimed, "plaintiffs' groundless allegations ignore both McDonald's legitimate business reasons for not investing more in their channels and the company's long-standing business relationships with many other diverse-owned partners," AFP reported.

The decision in this legal battle is yet to be declared. However, the fast food giant has been reported to be denying the accusations imposed by Allen.

On Tuesday, a blast in an apartment building in Chicago, United States, left at least eight people injured, the city’s fire department told the media. According to media reports, three people are in critical condition. Meanwhile, the authorities are “confident” that they have evacuated the building. The investigation for the cause of the blast is currently underway, indicated the authorities.

According to the Chicago Fire Department, the blast took place at 9:45 am (local time) and also took to Twitter to post pictures and give updates. The images released showed the four-story brick apartment building on the city’s West side that was completely destroyed by the blast. The incident took place near Washington Boulevard and Central Avenue, said the fire department.

Subsequently, at least 10 ambulances and 135 first responders were sent to the area and 8 people, two female and six male victims were taken to the hospital. According to the department spokesperson, Larry Merritt at least three people were in critical condition and most are seriously injured with “very traumatic burn injuries,” and are being treated at the burn unit in Loyola University Medical Center.

Meanwhile, the fire department in a tweet indicated, “Background on explosion. This is a four-story apartment building. With 35 units. Investigation underway into cause by CFD OFI. Assisted by ATF and CPD. Looking at 4th Floor as possible source.” The authorities further indicated that the evacuation of the building adjacent to the site of the explosion was also underway.

During a midday briefing with the press Deputy Fire Commissioner Marc Ferman said that after they conducted the primary and secondary searches of the building following the explosion. He added, “Right now we feel like we're confident we got everybody out.” The local media also reported that the fourth floor of the building collapsed and was “compromised”, Ferman said.

According to a report by CBS news, the residential building had repeatedly failed annual inspections for almost 12 years and received citations on two separate occasions one in 2017 and another in 2018 for “failing to repair or replace defective or out of service smoke detectors and operate continuously”.
