At least 2,200 flights got cancelled across the United States as a major winter storm swept through the country, with the National Weather Service (NWS) calling it a “once-in-a-generation type event.”

The chill is expected to stay for the Christmas weekend, making this the coldest Christmas in about 40 years, say forecasters.

Those hoping to spend the Christmas holidays with their loved ones were left disappointed after the airlines cancelled more than 2,200 US flights by 1 pm ET on Thursday, and proactively cancelled more than 900 flights on Friday, according to the flight tracking site FlightAware.

And the flight delays were even more pronounced, affecting more than 3,700 on Thursday.

Chicago and Denver were hit hardest by flight cancellations on Thursday, FlightAware data show.

At Chicago’s O'Hare International Airport, flights delays were averaging 159 minutes, as snow and ice made it impossible for an early take off, the Federal Aviation Administration stated in a notice, reports CNN.

Anticipating further travel disruptions, major airlines like United, Delta and American, have started to waive fees for travellers who wish to reschedule their flights.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden warned US citizens travelling during the Christmas week to be careful and leave early if possible to avoid the massive storm expected to hit several states.

“This is not like a snow day when you were a kid. This is serious stuff,” Biden said.

According to the NWS, bone-chilling temperatures of -50F (-45C) and -70F were expected by the end of this week in some parts of the country.

Weather forecasters believe that this winter storm could transform into a "bomb cyclone", a type of powerful, rapidly strengthening storm, by Friday.

The winter storm is expected to trigger snowfall and powerful winds, causing damage and power outages in the Midwest and Canada.

In a statement released on Thursday, Russia said that the supply of US Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, which had been announced during Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's trip to Washington, would neither contribute to a settlement of the crisis nor hinder Russia's objectives. In addition to this, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia will find an 'antidote' to US Patriot missiles in Ukraine.

Dmitry Peskov, the spokesperson for the Kremlin, claimed that throughout Zelensky's visit, there had been no indication of willingness for peace negotiations, demonstrating that the United States and Russia were engaged in a proxy conflict "until the last Ukrainian."

Invoking the fights against the Nazis in World War II to urge more support in the war against Russia, Zelensky told the US Congress on Wednesday that help to his country was an investment in democracy.

A further $1.85 billion in military assistance from the United States was announced for Ukraine, including the Patriot air defence system to help it fight off Russian missile barrages. The Patriot system, according to Zelensky, was a crucial component in building an air shield.

“This is the only way that we can deprive the terrorist state of its main instrument of terror — the possibility to hit our cities, our energy,” Zelensky told a White House news conference, standing next to President Joe Biden.

US President Joe Biden met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House on Wednesday for a bilateral meeting, vowing to "continue to strengthen Ukraine's ability to defend itself — particularly air defence."

Biden expressed America’s support to Ukraine’s cause, along with allies “in Europe, Japan and other places to make sure you have the financial humanitarian and security assistance that you needed”.

He also announced that the US will be sending the Patriot air defence missile systems to Ukraine to help strengthen its defences against the Russian forces.

The system is part of $1.85 billion in security assistance unveiled in parallel with a visit to Washington by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, his first trip outside the country since Russia invaded in February.

The announcement is a significant victory for Kyiv, which had repeatedly pushed Washington for the Patriot system, and a strong sign of US support for Ukraine.

"Today's assistance for the first time includes the Patriot Air Defense System, capable of bringing down cruise missiles, short-range ballistic missiles, and aircraft at a significantly higher ceiling than previously provided air defense systems," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the Patriot announcement, saying the system "will strengthen our air defense significantly."

"This is a very important step to create a secure air space for Ukraine," he told journalists through a translator at a news conference alongside President Joe Biden at the White House.

Zelensky, in his part, thanked Biden for his "big support and leadership across Europe."

"I think it's very difficult to understand what does it mean when we say appreciate but you really have to feel it," Zelensky said in English.

Zelensky also presented an award to Biden that he said was handed to him by a "real hero" —a captain on the ground of a HIMARS rocket system that has been a game-changer on the field.

Biden says US will ship Patriot air defence missile system to Ukraine during meet with Zelensky

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the United States Congress on Thursday (December 22) during his visit to Washington amid what Russia calls its “special military operation” in Kyiv. The speech, which was a little over 20 minutes, refers to three battles out of which two have historically been the turning point of their respective wars.

Zelensky compared the ongoing fight for the small eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, to the Battle of Saratoga which was fought during the US Revolutionary War against the British. While also comparing the ongoing conflict with Russia to World War II’s Battle of the Bulge.

Battle of Saratoga and fight for Bakhmut

“The Russian military and mercenaries have been taking Bakhmut nonstop since May. They have been taking it day and night, but Bakhmut stands,” said Zelensky had said in his speech. He added, “Just like the Battle of Saratoga, the fight for Bakhmut will change the tragic story of our war for independence and of freedom,”

Referring to the Battle of Saratoga was seen as a turning point in the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783) fought by the ‘Patriots’ who wanted to gain independence from Great Britain. After over 150 years of Britain controlling the 13 colonies, once created in the 1600s it was not until the mid-1700s that they began taxing and imposing their laws on the colonies.

This led to years of tensions between the colonies and Britain that eventually culminated in a revolution and subsequent war. On July 4, 1776, after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the colonies officially declared themselves free from the British.

However, at the beginning of the war, Patriots faced many defeats against the strongest militaries in the world at the time with trained soldiers and resources. But the two-part battle was seen as a turning point of the war in favour of the colonists, with support from countries like France. According to the archives, the first one was fought on September 19 and the second on October 7.

Meanwhile, in present-day Ukraine, the battle for Bakhmut has been going on for nearly five months with incessant bombing and civilians fleeing the city which was once reportedly populated with at least 70,000 people has been reduced to nearly 10,000. On the other hand, citing Konrad Muzyka, a Polish military analyst, Reuters reported that even if Russia manages to win, it will be at a great cost.

Furthermore, experts say, there is also a fear that the Kremlin’s forces will use this city as a stepping stone to capturing two bigger cities, Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Additionally, if Ukraine loses then it will be cut off from its access to its road and rail supply line intersection in Bakhmut. However, Muzyka says that its strategic value in Russia has also been lessened since August due to Ukraine’s heavy fortification around the region.

“The fighting for Bakhmut is not senseless, but strategically unsound (for Russia) given weak offensive potential and no prospect of breakthrough even if the city is captured,” said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military at a US-based think tank. However, Muzyka says that the battle for this region has become a “battle of attrition”.

Furthermore, the report citing British intelligence says that Bakhmut’s capture has become “primarily a symbolic, political objective” for Moscow, something that could lift morale. While for Ukraine, the experts said this region is partly about constant support from its allies in the West. This comes after Kyiv’s forces have achieved a string of successes in pushing back against Russia.

According to Kofman, “At this stage, Ukraine is the victim of its own recent success, and suffers from heightened expectations of sustained momentum.” Furthermore, the report suggests that Ukraine’s recent success and fewer defeats could be perceived by the West as a stalemate which would then be less willing to extend support to Ukraine as the western countries continue to deal with economic pressures, as a result of this conflict.

Russia-Ukraine conflict and World War II’s Battle of the Bugle

“The Russian tactic is primitive. They burn down and destroy everything they see. They sent thugs to the frontlines. They sent convicts to the war...They threw everything against us – similar to the other tyranny, which in the Battle of the Bulge threw everything it had against the free world,” said the Ukrainian president in his speech.

He added, “Just like the brave American soldiers, which held their lines and fought back Hitler’s forces during the Christmas of 1944, brave Ukrainian soldiers are doing the same to Putin’s forces this Christmas. Ukraine holds its lines and will never surrender!”

The Ukrainian president is referring to the Battle of the Bulge fought between, December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945, which marked the final major counteroffensive by the German forces against the Allied Powers. The battle witnessed heavy fighting and casualties which has also been attributed to the poor weather in the region, however, the Allies prevailed.

Earlier this month, as the conflict continued well into 10 months, Russia ruled out the possibility of a “Christmas ceasefire” and also rejected Ukraine’s calls for the withdrawal of troops with Christmas marking the end of the conflict.

On December 14, in response to questions regarding the possibility of a “Christmas ceasefire” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, “No, no such offers have been received from anybody. This topic is not on the agenda.”

Furthermore, while Zelensky wants Russia to start pulling back by Christmas, Moscow wants Ukraine to accept the loss of territory to Russia before any progress can be made. Therefore, with the raging war in eastern and southern Ukraine and little movement on either side as well as no ongoing little possibility of talks, the conflict might continue throughout the holiday season.

Russia's army chief defined joint naval exercises between Chinese and Russian vessels on Thursday as a reaction to the increasingly aggressive US military stance in the Asia-Pacific area.

"This cooperation is a natural reaction to the aggressive build-up of US military potential in the region... The exercises we are conducting are in strict accordance with international law," Valery Gerasimov said in a briefing.

In order to enhance naval cooperation, Russia declared that it will send six warships to engage in war simulations from December 21 to December 27 off the coast of China.

"The purpose of these events is to increase the combat readiness of the troops and forces of the two countries and the ability to withstand new challenges and threats," Gerasimov said in a briefing with foreign military representatives.

The exercises, according to the defence ministry, will entail live fire drills using artillery and missiles as well as practising techniques for dealing with submarines.

"We are not going to create any alliances and new dividing lines in the region, like Washington has," Gerasimov added Thursday.

Russian Army chief calls naval exercises with China a response to 'aggressive' US

A bomb cyclone is a quickly intensifying storm. In most cases, the pressure must drop by 24 millibars in a 24-hour period. But that standard also takes the storm's latitude into account. Therefore, depending on where the storm originates, the millibar may fluctuate. This week, a strong arctic winter storm that will deliver debilitating snow and subfreezing temperatures will pass over the US and Canada. Later this week, it is predicted to make landfall over the Great Lakes before developing into a "bomb cyclone" by early Friday.

Why is it called a bomb cyclone?

When describing how the storm formed, meteorologists used terms like "explosive cyclogenesis" and "bombogenesis" to compare the abrupt drop in pressure to a bomb going off. Despite what it may seem like, the word "bomb cyclone" is a real scientific term. University of California, Los Angeles, climate scientist Daniel Swain said one can look it up in the American Meteorological Society glossary that the term specifically refers to the speed at which a storm forms. “It doesn’t necessarily refer to the absolute strength of the storm system," he added.

Bomb Cyclone vs. Hurricane

1. Warm oceans give hurricanes their energy, and they frequently originate in tropical regions. Due to the hottest saltwater, they are most prevalent in the summer or early fall. Bomb cyclones, on the other hand, don't require warm ocean temperatures to develop. They can emerge over land as well as the water, as was the case with the cyclone that struck the northern Plains in March 2019.

2. Bomb cyclones, as opposed to hurricanes, develop at mid-latitudes when air fronts of both warm and cold temperatures may clash. Summer, when temperatures are typically warm throughout the Northern Hemisphere, is an uncommon time for them to occur. Instead, they develop in the period from late fall to early spring when warm tropical air collides with arctic air.

How dangerous Bomb cyclones are?

Bomb cyclones operate similarly to regular winter storms. However, on occasion they bring about significant flooding, blizzard conditions, and winds that are similar to a Category 1 hurricane. Fundamentally, according to Swain, a bomb cyclone's effects are not necessarily different from those of other violent storm systems, with the exception that a storm system's rapid intensification is typically an indicator of one that is extremely potent. He further said that according to media sources, bomb cyclones may catch individuals off guard, which adds to the danger.

A bomb cyclone is a quickly intensifying storm. In most cases, the pressure must drop by 24 millibars in a 24-hour period. But that standard also takes the storm's latitude into account.

Hurricane 1.

The World Trade Organisation (WTO) ruled on Wednesday (December 21) that the United States was flouting international trade rules by labelling imports from Hong Kong as those from China. USA has rejected this ruling. The WTO ruling addressed a decision under former president Donald Trump's administration after Beijing imposed a sweeping security law on the financial hub in 2020 to stamp out dissent.

Trump retaliated by removing special trading privileges for the city and US customs authorities later said goods produced there could no longer be stamped "Made in Hong Kong", sparking the complaint.

Hong Kong argues that this move by the US ignored its status as a separate member of the WTO. This, says Hong Kong, violates trade rules.

On Wednesday, a panel set up by the WTO's dispute settlement body said that the origin marking requirement was "not justified" under global trade rules.

It added that the US "has not demonstrated that the situation at issue constitutes an emergency in international relations".

The US's labeling requirement also gives Hong Kong products "less favorable" treatment than others, the panel said, adding that goods of other countries bear their own name rather than that of another WTO member.

The ruling drew sharp reaction from the US.

As the United States continues to struggle with an epidemic of drug overdose deaths, it might not be close to over. The country’s Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), on Tuesday, said that this year they seized enough fentanyl in 2022 to kill every American.

This comes after a study found drug overdoses among people aged 10 to 18 more than doubled between 2019 and 2021, earlier this year. Reports suggest that recently the American markets have been flooded with fentanyl.

What is fentanyl?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fentanyl is a synthetic opioid which is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. It is also highly possible to get addicted to fentanyl. There are two types of fentanyl:

Pharmaceutical fentanyl

While both are considered synthetic opioids, this type of fentanyl was developed for pain management in patients with advanced-stage cancer and is typically administered by a patch or injection at hospitals. These are also prescribed by doctors to mitigate severe pain usually after surgery.

Illicitly manufactured fentanyl

On the other hand, illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) is found in the drug market in different forms including powder and liquid. As mentioned earlier, fentanyl is also diverted for abuse because of its powerful opioid properties and heroin-like effect. Furthermore, it is also usually mixed or added with other drugs, “because of its extreme potency, which makes drugs cheaper, more powerful, more addictive, and more dangerous,” said the CDC.

It is mixed with other illicit drugs like heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, and sold as other prescription opioids which is extremely dangerous since many people are unaware that their drugs are laced with fentanyl, which can also be disguised as highly potent heroin which often results in overdose-related deaths.

Fentanyl in its liquid form can be found in the form of nasal sprays, eye drops, and dropped onto paper or small candies, said the CDC.

Why is it used and how does it affect the body?

According to the DEA, fentanyl is used for, intense, short-term highs, temporary feelings of euphoria, slowed respiration and reduced blood pressure, nausea, fainting and seizures. It essentially affects the central nervous system and the brain to block pain signals to the rest of the body and also reduces anxiety and stress caused by the pain.

Fentanyl also produces bodily responses like euphoria, relaxation, pain relief, sedation, confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, urinary retention, pupillary constriction, and respiratory depression, said the DEA.

DEA’s seizure of millions of deadly doses of fentanyl this year

In a statement, on Tuesday (December 20) the US drug enforcement agency said that it had seized more than 379 million potentially deadly doses of fentanyl which included more than 50.6 million fentanyl-laced, fake prescription pills and more than 10,000 pounds of fentanyl powder in 2022.

“Fentanyl is the deadliest drug threat facing this country,” said the DEA, giving the example of just two milligrams of fentanyl being considered as a potentially deadly dose. “In the past year, the men and women of the DEA have relentlessly worked to seize over 379 million deadly doses of fentanyl from communities across the country,” said the US Administrator Anne Milgram.

The illicit drug is primarily manufactured in secret factories in Mexico, and trafficked by the Sinaloa and CJNG cartels to the US made from chemicals sourced from China, said the DEA. The US federal agency’s “top operational priority is to defeat the two Mexican drug cartels…that are primarily responsible for the fentanyl that is killing Americans today.”

In 2022, the DEA also seized more than double the number of fake prescription pills which were laced with fentanyl when compared to last year. This was in addition to the nearly 131,000 pounds of methamphetamine, more than 4,300 pounds of heroin, and over 444,000 pounds of cocaine, said the statement.

Last year, the agency also issued a Public Safety Alert after fentanyl-laced, fake prescription pills were “readily found on social media”. These pills are made to look identical to real prescription medications like Xanax, Percocet and OxyContin.

Fentanyl and overdose

Earlier this month, a new study by the CDC said that drug overdoses among people aged 10 to 18 more than doubled in the US between 2019 and 2021. Additionally, the average monthly rate of overdose among adolescents also increased by 109 per cent. This health agency had largely attributed this to the illegally manufactured fentanyl which increased by 182 per cent in the same time duration.

Even small doses of fentanyl can be deadly and it is also “the most common drug involved in overdose deaths”, said the CDC. It added, over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. Furthermore, finding out if fentanyl is present in prescription drugs is “nearly impossible”, since it is not visible or has any distinct taste or smell.

However, there are test strips that one might use to check the presence of the illicit drug which typically show the result in five minutes but do not detect more potent fentanyl-like drugs, like carfentanil.

Echoing a similar warning as the DEA, the CDC in its report had said, “The proliferation of counterfeit pills is particularly concerning for adolescents given marketing aimed toward this population and the availability of such pills via social media.”

So far, many states have passed policies and Good Samaritan laws which protect those who overdose on opioids and the people who seek medical help for those individuals. While these laws differ from state to state, they also provide some protection against prosecution for possessing illegal drugs.

Aside from the test strips, the CDC also recommends administering Narcan which consists of an active drug called naloxone, a life-saving medication which is a nasal spray used to treat an opioid overdose and is available in all 50 states and can be without a prescription in most states. However, it is not a substitute for medical treatment.

Potential “fentanyl vaccine” on the horizon?

Earlier this year, a research team led by the University of Houston, Texas, said that they have developed a vaccine which targets fentanyl and could block its ability to enter the brain and eliminate the “high” which is often achieved by using these drugs. The breakthrough could have major implications for the opioid epidemic in the country and also act as a “relapse prevention agent” for people who are trying to quit, said the researchers in a statement.

The findings were first published in the journal Pharmaceuticals, in late October. Researchers also note that while Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) is treatable, at least 80 per cent of people once dependent on the drug, relapse. “We believe these findings could have a significant impact on a very serious problem plaguing society for years – opioid misuse,” said the study’s lead author Colin Haile and a founding member of the UH Drug Discovery Institute.

He added, “Our vaccine is able to generate anti-fentanyl antibodies that bind to the consumed fentanyl and prevent it from entering the brain, allowing it to be eliminated out of the body via the kidneys. Thus, the individual will not feel the euphoric effects and can ‘get back on the wagon’ to sobriety.”

So far, the vaccine has been tested on immunized rats and did not have any adverse effects while the team reportedly plans to begin human trials in the upcoming months. Additionally, since the “anti-fentanyl antibodies” are specific to fentanyl and its derivatives the vaccine does not react with other opioids like morphine, which means that a vaccinated person can still use opioids for pain relief, said the researchers.
