<p>A day after the HRW report was published, the Ethiopian foreign ministry released a statement and said, “The Government of Ethiopia will promptly investigate the incident in tandem with Saudi Authorities.” It also went on to emphasise the strong relations between the two governments.</p>

<p>“It is highly advised to exercise utmost restraint from making unnecessary speculations until the investigation is complete,” the statement added. Meanwhile, a Saudi government source who spoke to AFP called the allegations&nbsp;“unfounded”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The allegations included in the Human Rights Watch report about Saudi border guards shooting Ethiopians while they were crossing the Saudi-Yemeni border are unfounded and not based on reliable sources,” the anonymous source told the news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>HRW interviewed as many as 42 migrants, including 38 Ethiopians who attempted to cross the Yemen-Saudi border between March 2022 and June 2023. The organisation also analysed over 350 videos and photographs posted on social media and other sources.</p>

<p>The European Commission, on Tuesday, said it would raise the report’s findings with the Saudi government and the Houthi authorities in Yemen, and welcomed the joint probe plan.</p>

<p>“We welcome the announcement by the government of Ethiopia, specifically, to investigate the whole issue together with the authorities in Saudi Arabia,” said Commission spokesman Peter Stano.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The United States called on its long-time ally Saudi Arabia for “a thorough and transparent investigation” into the accusations. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric called the report “very concerning” and noted that the “serious” allegations will be difficult to verify.</p>

<p>According to the official IRNA news agency, the new drone “can fly up to a maximum duration of 24 hours at an altitude of 7,000 metres with an operational range of 2,000 kilometres.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The payload capacity can reach 300 kilogrammes, double the capacity of the “Mohajer-6” drone allowing it to carry “all kinds of bombs and ammunitions,” IRNA reported.</p>

<p>Over 300 satellites are reportedly engaged in monitoring these activities, accumulating a total of more than 3,000 flight hours since the commencement of Exercise Malabar on August 10.</p>

<p>According to James Bennett, an official from EOS Space Systems, who spoke with ABC, there is significant ground surveying activity by China. “We’ve been collecting optical surveillance data on Earth observing Chinese satellites during the Talisman Sabre and Malabar exercises and what that’s showing is quite a lot of activity surveying the ground during those events,” Bennett told ABC News.</p>

Hundreds of Chinese satellites spying on US-Australia military exercises

<p>China is investigating a Chinese national accused of spying for the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the country's state security ministry said on Monday.</p>

<p>The 39-year-old Chinese national, surnamed Hao, was a cadre at a ministry and had gone to Japan for studies, which was where the spying recruitment occurred, the ministry said. Hao's gender was not revealed.</p>

<p>The statement came less than two weeks after the ministry said it uncovered another national also suspected of spying for the CIA after being recruited in Italy. The US embassies in Beijing and Tokyo did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.</p>

<p>The ministry said Hao had become acquainted with a US&nbsp;embassy official known as "Ted" while sorting out a visa application. He invited Hao for dinners, presented gifts, and sought Hao's help with writing a paper that Ted promised to pay for, the ministry said.</p>

<p>Ted introduced Hao to a colleague named Li Jun before his term at the embassy in Japan ended, the ministry said; Li and Hao then maintained a "cooperative relationship".</p>

<p>Before Hao completed studying, Li revealed being Tokyo-based CIA personnel and "instigated Hao into rebelling", telling Hao to return to China to work for a "core and critical unit".</p>

<p>Hao signed an espionage agreement, accepting assessment and training from the United States, according to the statement.</p>

Trump to skip Republican primary debates, cites 'legendary' lead in opinion polls

<p>Guatemalans began casting their vote&nbsp;on Sunday (August 20) in the presidential run-off election, as many hope for a reversal of democratic backsliding the country has witnessed in recent administrations. The election has also been marked by the harassment of a surprise frontrunner who has vowed to end corruption.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>About the run-off elections</strong></h2>

<p>Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (local time) and the voting was supposed to end by 6:00 pm (local time). The first results are expected later in the evening. The current race is between progressive outsider Bernardo Arevalo and former first lady Sandra Torres, both of whom are said to be social democrats.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A poll by CID Gallup and the Freedom and Development Foundation said that Arevalo – who is running mainly on an anti-corruption message – is leading with 50 per cent against Torres, who is coming in second with 32 per cent.</p>

<p>A presidential candidate of the&nbsp;National Union of Hope party, Torres is the ex-wife of deceased leftist president Alvaro Colom. She launched her fourth shot at the presidency with a focus on violent crime and poverty.</p>

About the run-off elections Polling stations opened at 7:00 am (local time) and the voting was supposed to end by 6:00 pm (local time). The first results are expected later in the evening. The current race is between progressive outsider Bernardo Arevalo and former first lady Sandra Torres, both of whom are said to be social democrats. A poll by CID Gallup and the Freedom and Development Foundation said that Arevalo – who is running mainly on an anti-corruption message – is leading with 50 per cent against Torres, who is coming in second with 32 per cent. A presidential candidate of the National Union of Hope party, Torres is the ex-wife of deceased leftist president Alvaro Colom. She launched her fourth shot at the presidency with a focus on violent crime and poverty. Fears of election interference The Organization of American States said a team of 86 election observers was in the country. “It is essential that citizens be able to express themselves freely with full guarantees and that their expressions be respected,” said Eladio Loizaga, head of the OAS mission in Guatemala, on Saturday. This comes amid fears of efforts to undermine the vote after Arevalo’s surprise second-place finish in June’s first-round vote was followed by raids against his Semilla party offices and those of electoral officials. Therefore, the vote has been closely watched by the international community. Outgoing President Alejandro Giammattei has vowed to ensure an orderly vote and transition of power. Meanwhile, prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche ahead of the vote on Sunday did not rule out the possibility of more raids and arrests after the elections.
