Former US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Dec 7) appeared at a New York court to attend his ongoing civil fraud trial, where he condemned the process as unfair.

The frontrunner for the next year's Republican presidential nomination, along with his two eldest sons, has been accused of boosting the value of his real estate purchases to acquire more favourable bank loans and insurance terms.

His defence team is asserting that the former US president's family organisation did not exploit the value of its properties to win profitable financing.

"This is a witch hunt. This is election interference at a level that has never seen before, comes out of the DOJ (Department of Justice) in the White House in order to hurt a political opponent. And actually, it's driving up my polls because the people of our country get it," Trump said while talking to reporters.&nbsp;

"The poll numbers are the highest I've ever had, and the people of our country get it. It's a disgrace to America," he further added.

During his trial, Trump called the judge Arthur Engoron, who is overseeing the trial,&nbsp;"crazy" and "unhinged," and denounced New York State Attorney General Letitia James as "corrupt" and "racist."

Trump is expected to testify as the final defence witness on Monday (Dec 11). He has denied wrongdoing and says James, an elected Democrat, is biased against him.

To fight the imminent threat to native protected owl species, the US wildlife federal agency has laid out a plan to shoot nearly half-a-million barred owls over 30 years. The barred owl, also known as the hoot owl or eight-hooter owl, is a large species of owl and is more aggressive in nature. The plan will kick off as early as 2025.

The species, with its home in the Pacific Northwest on the US East Coast for decades, is outnumbering the owls in the north. The species' numbers across Washington, California, and Oregon have been shrinking. These invasive barred owls&nbsp;are also gradually displacing native owls from the southern areas.&nbsp;

This comes as part of a draft management plan by the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) which is hoping for a mass culling of these species with a wide-variety diet. Plans also include enlisting hunters to&nbsp;achieve the killing of invasive owls over three decades.

<h2>What are the traits of barred owls?&nbsp;</h2>

As far as the diet is concerned, these barred owls eat insects, fish, and other birds. In body size, they are bigger and are more competitive in claiming their territories by disrupting the nest of native owls and unleashing attacks on them. With the number of native owls slumping, the US wildlife agency listed them as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.&nbsp;

Reports quoting data show that in the last 20 years, the population of these native species has declined by between 35 per cent and 80 per cent. Over 100,000 barred owls are present in the northern spotted owls' territory across Washington, Oregon, and Northern California.&nbsp;

"Everywhere the spotted owl can live and thrive, barred owls can thrive and do even better," Katherine Fitzgerald, northern spotted owl recovery lead for the FWS, told the Seattle Times. "They are still invading, and they are not done."

<h2>What does the plan constitute?&nbsp;</h2>

The culling plans will kick off with the culling of 20,000 of the owls in the first year. It will be followed by culling 13,397 birds per year during first decade, 16,303 per year in the second decade, and lastly 17,390 birds per&nbsp;year in the third decade.&nbsp;Landowners or land managers could apply for a permit to kill. The weapon used will be a large-bore shotgun.&nbsp;

The White House on Thursday (Dec 7) urged India to hold accountable those behind the alleged plot to kill a Sikh separatist leader, which the US claims to have thwarted, even as it called New Delhi a strategic partner.

“India is a strategic partner. We’re deepening that strategic partnership. They’re a member of the Quad in the Pacific. We participate with them on a range of issues and we want to see that continue unabated. That said, at the same time, we certainly recognise the seriousness of these allegations,” National Security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters at a White House news conference.

Kirby's was asked about the impact that the alleged foiled plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun would have on bilateral ties.

“We want it fully investigated and those responsible to be held properly accountable,” he said.

“It’s under active investigation. We’ve said that we’re glad that our Indian counterparts are taking it seriously and doing that. We want those responsible for these attacks to be held fully accountable, but I won’t get ahead of an investigation that isn’t complete,” Kirby added.

Earlier, White House deputy national security adviser Jon Finer led a US delegation to India's capital New Delhi where he discussed forming an investigative panel to probe the murder plot against Pannun, the leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher A Wray is scheduled to visit India on December 11-12 and engage with top officials from the central intelligence agencies and the Ministry of Home Affairs, local reports said citing undisclosed sources.&nbsp;

This development comes at a critical juncture as US federal prosecutors charged an Indian national and an unnamed Indian official for plotting to kill Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, an India-designated terrorist who currently lives in the US.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/videos/india-parliament-bombing-threat-why-is-khalistani-terrorist-pannun-still-free-in-america-gravitas-666961">latest episode </a>of "Gravitas," WION questioned the deafening silence of the United States and no action against Pannun as he remains free on American soil despite the gravity of the situation and the repeated threats issued by him, including threatening to blow up India's&nbsp;Parliament building.&nbsp;

Against this backdrop, Wray will hold a conversation with National Investigation Agency (NIA) chief Dinkar Gupta, reportedly on three crucial issues of Khalistan terrorism, the nexus with gangsters, and Pakistan-sponsored terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir.

Wray's upcoming visit to India takes on heightened significance as this is his first trip since assuming office in 2017, and notably, the first visit by an FBI director in 12 years.

The discussions between Wray and NIA officials are anticipated to cover a spectrum of issues, including cases and evidence against Pannun, the chief of the banned outfit Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), in addition to the activities of US-based gangster Darmanjot Singh Kahlon, implicated in supplying weapons to kill Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.

Khalistan supporters who are accused of vandalising the Indian Consulate in San Francisco will also feature in the discussions.&nbsp;

Adding to the complexity, tensions between India and Canada have escalated over the killing of another Khalistani terrorist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Christopher A Wray is scheduled to visit India on December 11-12 and engage with top officials from the central intelligence agencies and the Ministry of Home Affairs, local reports said citing undisclosed sources. This development comes at a critical juncture as US federal prosecutors charged an Indian national and an unnamed Indian official for plotting to kill Khalistan separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, an India-designated terrorist who currently lives in the US. In the latest episode of "Gravitas," WION questioned the deafening silence of the United States and no action against Pannun as he remains free on American soil despite the gravity of the situation and the repeated threats issued by him, including threatening to blow up India's Parliament building. Khalistan supporters who are accused of vandalising the Indian Consulate in San Francisco will also feature in the discussions. FBI chief Christopher A Wray to visit India next week amid deafening silence on Pannun's chilling threats

The United States on Wednesday formally determined that warring parties in Sudan committed war crimes, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said, as Washington increases pressure on the army and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to end fighting that has caused a humanitarian crisis.

Washington also determined that the RSF and allied militias committed crimes against humanity and ethnic cleansing, Blinken said in a statement.

The fighting, which broke out in mid-April, has displaced more than 6.5 million inside and outside Sudan, killed more than 10,000 and decimated the economy.

"The expansion of the needless conflict between RSF and the SAF has caused grievous human suffering," Blinken said, referring to the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF).

He called on the parties to "stop this conflict now, comply with their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, and hold accountable those responsible for atrocities."

The RSF has been accused of leading an ethnic massacre in West Darfur, and in the capital Khartoum residents have accused the paramilitary force of looting, rape and imprisoning civilians.

"Masalit civilians have been hunted down and left for dead in the streets, their homes set on fire, and told that there is no place in Sudan for them," Blinken said. The Masalit are a non-Arab tribe.

Meanwhile, the army has carried out an intense campaign of air and artillery strikes on residential neighbourhoods, where the RSF has occupied, which experts say could be violations of international law.

"Detainees have been abused and some killed at SAF and RSF detention sites," Blinken added.

The official determination follows a detailed legal process and analysis led by the US&nbsp;State Department but does not automatically come with punitive actions and therefore has no immediate consequences for the parties.

The decision comes after Saudi and U.S.-brokered talks aimed at halting fighting between Sudan's warring parties faltered again, and the country's army and the RSF have pressed on with military campaigns.

Reuters has chronicled the ethnically targeted violence committed this year by the RSF and its allied Arab militias in West Darfur, in particular in the city of El Geneina.

A September special report revealed how the RSF and its allies carried out a weeks-long killing campaign against the Masalit tribe, including the shooting of children, the burning of people in their homes, and the rape of women and girls.

In early November, the RSF and Arab militias carried out another round of ethnic killings in El Geneina, in which survivors told Reuters that Masalit men were rounded up and shot, while some were hacked to death with axes and machetes.

<h2>US PRESSURE ON WARRING PARTIES</h2>

The United States has imposed several rounds of sanctions after war between the army and the RSF broke out in April over plans for a political transition and the integration of the RSF into the army, four years after long-time ruler Omar al-Bashir was overthrown in a popular uprising.

Among those targeted have been the deputy leader of the RSF, former Sudanese officials and companies Washington has accused of fueling the conflict.

But Washington has so far not targeted the army and RSF directly with sanctions, despite calls from human rights activists for it to designate the parties and determine genocide has been committed in Darfur.

But Blinken warned that Wednesday's determination does not rule out the possibility of other determinations in future as more information becomes available.

"The United States is committed to building on this determination and using available tools to end this conflict and cease committing the atrocities and other abuses that are depriving the Sudanese people of freedom, peace, and justice," Blinken said.

The director of the United States FBI Christopher Wray will be visiting India next week. The planned visit comes amidst a US federal investigation into an alleged plot to kill the Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

FBI trip scheduled amid 'Pannun kill plot' charge

The US military and Japan grounded all of their Osprey V-22 helicopters a week after eight US Air Force officers died in a crash off the coast of Japan due to a malfunction.

The Air Force said that they will remain grounded until the investigation is complete. However, it did not say how long that might take.

Air Force and Navy officials said they "decided to mitigate risk while the investigation continues".

<h2>Probe on</h2>

“Preliminary investigation information indicates a potential materiel failure caused the mishap, but the underlying cause of the failure is unknown at this time," Air Force Special Operations Command said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 7).

"The stand down will provide time and space for a thorough investigation to determine causal factors and recommendations to ensure the Air Force CV-22 fleet returns to flight operations," the statement added.

At the time of the crash, the Osprey was being operated as a training flight from a US Marine Corps air base in Yamaguchi Prefecture and was headed towards Kadena Air Base in Okinawa.

Japan—the only other nation known to operate Ospreys as a helicopter and an aircraft with propellers—has said that a fleet of 14 Ospreys has been grounded as well after the crash.

<h2>50 have died in fatal crashes since 2007</h2>

The US-made Osprey is a multipurpose aircraft that has dual functionalities. It takes off and lands like a helicopter, but can also move forward and cruise much faster with its rotating propellers, just like an airplane, during flight.

Air Force Special Operations Command has 51 Ospreys, the US Marine Corps flies more than 400, while the US Navy operates 27.

The first Ospreys became operational in 2007 after decades of testing. But since then, more than 50 troops have died either in testing the Osprey or conducting training flights in the aircraft, including 20 deaths in four crashes over the past 20 months.

The latest was last week’s crash where the aircraft, according to eyewitnesses, flipped over and was on fire before crashing offshore.

Six bodies were found of the eight killed in the crash.

In August, a separate model of Osprey crashed during a military exercise in Australia, killing three US Marines and injuring 20 others. The incident is still under investigation.

Senate Republicans on Wednesday (Dec 6) blocked the White House's request for $106 billion in emergency aid for Ukraine as well as Israel as the conservatives showed resistance to the debarment of immigration reforms they had demanded as part of the package.

The vote was 49 in favour to 51 against, which left the $110.5 billion measure short of the 60 votes needed in the 100-member Senate to pave the way to start debate, endangering President Joe Biden's push to provide new aid before the end of this year.

The package would provide approximately $60 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, along with funds for humanitarian and economic aid for the government in Kyiv.

It would also include $14 billion for Israel as it battles Hamas in Gaza.

A Democrat, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, also voted for a "no" stating that he could introduce the measure again in the future.&nbsp;

Schumer, post the voting, also underlined the risk if Ukraine fails to succeed, saying that it was a "serious moment that will have lasting consequences for the 21st century," risking the decline of Western democracy.

Republicans stated that it was extremely important to make their case for tighter immigration policies and control of the southern border.

"Today’s vote is what it takes for the Democratic leader to recognise that Senate Republicans mean what we say," Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell said in a floor speech earlier on Wednesday. <h2>'We can't&nbsp;let Putin win,' says Biden</h2>

Earlier in the day, United States President Joe Biden pleaded with the Republicans for more funds in military aid for Ukraine stating that if Russia succeeds in its invasion of Ukraine, Moscow would attain the position of attacking NATO allies and there is a possibility that it could draw US troops into a war.

"If Putin takes Ukraine, he won’t stop there," Biden said. Putin will attack a NATO ally, he predicted, and then "we’ll have something that we don't seek and that we don't have today: American troops fighting Russian troops," Biden said.

Las Vegas police on Wednesday (Dec 6) responded to the reports of a shooting rampage on the local campus of the University of Nevada.

The officials released a statement saying that the suspect was dead and that there were multiple victims.

The police later said that three people had lost their lives in the incident.

The officials added that another victim was in critical condition at a local hospital.

"According to our investigators at the scene, we have three deceased victims and one additional victim in critical condition at a local hospital," the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department wrote on social media.

Earlier in the statement, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) urged the residents to avoid taking the route from that area without sharing information about the reason behind the shooting.

"No more threat to the community. The suspect is deceased. Right now, we know there are 3 victims, but unknown extent of the injuries. That number could change. We will update you when we know more," the statement on LVMPD's official X handle read.
