A UN nuclear watchdog report has revealed that Iran's estimated stockpile of enriched uranium had reached more than 22 times the limit set out in the 2015 accord between Tehran and world powers.

According to a confidential International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report seen by AFP, Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile was estimated at 4,486.8 kilogrammes (9,891.7 pounds) as of October 28, up by 693.1 kilogrammes from August. The limit in the 2015 deal was set at 202.8 kilogrammes.

Meanwhile, the IAEA on Wednesday (November 15) expressed displeasure over Iran's decision to expel some of its inspectors, calling it&nbsp;"extreme and unjustified". The nuclear watchdog has said that the decision by the Islamic Republic has 'directly and seriously affected' its work. This has further strained relations between the UN body and Iran.

Talks to revive the deal have not yielded much and Iranian actions have strained its relations with Western countries and the IAEA.

The United Kingdom (UK) has defended sending depleted uranium shells to war-torn Ukraine after Russian President Vladimir Putin's warning, according to a report by BBC early Wednesday (March 22). On Tuesday, Putin had said that Moscow would be forced to react if the UK gave Kyiv military supplies, including armour-piercing ammunition which contains depleted uranium.

Earlier, the British government had confirmed that it would provide Ukraine with the armour-piercing rounds alongside Challenger two tanks,&nbsp;but insisted they have a low risk of radiation. A statement from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that depleted uranium is a standard component and has nothing to do with nuclear weapons, the BBC reported early Wednesday.&nbsp;

Colonel Hamish de Breton-Gordon,&nbsp;a former British Army tank commander,&nbsp;said that Russian President Putin's comments were classic disinformation. Colonel Gordon said that depleted uranium rounds used by Challenger 2 tanks contained only trace elements of depleted uranium, the report added.&nbsp;

Depleted uranium is a by-product of the nuclear enriching process used to make nuclear fuel or nuclear weapons. It is around 60 per cent as radioactive as natural uranium. Its heaviness lends itself to use in armour-piercing rounds as it helps them easily penetrate steel.&nbsp;

However, the United Nations Environment Programme has described it as a "chemically and radiologically toxic heavy metal."

CND, an anti-nuclear organisation, condemned the decision to send armour-piercing ammunition to Ukraine, calling it an "additional environmental and health disaster for those living through the conflict".&nbsp;

CND general secretary Kate Hudson said that the organisation repeatedly called for the British government "to place an immediate moratorium on the use of depleted uranium weapons and to fund long-term studies into their health and environmental impacts," the news agency AFP reported.&nbsp;

General Khaled al-Mahjoub, commander of eastern strongman Khalifa Haftar's communications division, said the containers of uranium had been recovered "barely five kilometres (three miles)" from where they had been stored in southern Libya.

Earlier on Thursday, the IAEA reported that the uranium had gone missing from a Libyan site and "may present a radiological risk."

It said that "10 drums containing approximately 2.5 tons of natural uranium in the form of uranium ore concentrate... were not present." The United Nations energy watchdog said that the site from which the uranium went missing was not currently under the regulatory control of Libya's state authority.

Uranium ore concentrate is considered to emit low levels of radioactivity. IAEA in its report, had warned about radiological risk as well as nuclear safety concerns.

Libya, under its long-ruling former dictator Moamer Kadhafi, had a suspected nuclear weapons programme, which it scrapped in 2003.

But the North African country has been mired in crisis since Kadhafi's fall in 2011, with a myriad of militias forming opposing alliances backed by foreign powers.

It remains split between a nominally interim government in the capital Tripoli in the west, and another in the east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.

The IAEA report only mentions the “particles”, suggesting that no stockpile of uranium enriched above 69 per cent is being built by Iran – the level which is being enriched by it for some time.

According to the IAEA report, on January 21, the inspectors discovered that two cascades of IR-6 centrifuges at the Fordo facility in Iran were configured in a way “substantially different” to what was declared previously.

The following day, samples were taken by the IAEA, which showed up to 83.7 per cent purity in particles, stated the report.

“Iran informed the agency that ‘unintended fluctuations’ in enrichment levels may have occurred during the transition period. Discussions between the agency and Iran to clarify the matter are ongoing,” the IAEA report stated.

The IAEA report also added that the agency would “further increase the frequency and intensity of agency verification activities” at Fordo after the uranium's discovery.

Speaking to the AP, Iran’s mission to the United Nations said that IAEA official Massimo Aparo visited the Islamic Republic last week “and checked the alleged enrichment rate”.

“Based on Iran’s assessment, the alleged enrichment percentage between Iran and the IAEA is resolved. Due to the IAEA report being prepared before his trip, his trip’s results aren’t in it and hopefully the IAEA director-general will mention it in his oral report to the board of governors in March,” the mission stated.&nbsp;

UN discovers uranium particles enriched up to 83.7 per cent in Iran

Almost two weeks after uranium was found in a cargo package at London's Heathrow Airport, a man on Sunday was arrested over suspicion of a terror offence, the metropolitan police said. The man, in his 60s, was been arrested under Section 09 of the Terrorism Act 2006, which covers the making and possession of radioactive devices and material. According to BBC, the man was released on bail until April.&nbsp;

Uranium, a harmful material used to make nuclear weapons, was found along with scrap metal at the airport by the Border Force during a routine check on Dec 29.&nbsp;Officials&nbsp;anticipated that the package which reportedly came from Pakistan could have been intended to be used in the making of a harmful bomb. AFP reported that the package arrived from an Oman Air passenger jet from Muscat. &nbsp;

In an attempt to reduce dependence on crude oil, Saudi Arabia is planning to use its own uranium resources to kickstart the civilian nuclear programme.&nbsp;

The kingdom's Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman in a TV interview on Wednesday said recent exploration endeavours had found uranium reserves across the country.&nbsp;

"Recent exploration activities revealed the presence of diverse sources of uranium in various locations.&nbsp;The kingdom intends to use its national uranium resources, including for joint projects with its partners," said&nbsp;bin Salman.&nbsp;

The minister&nbsp;assured that&nbsp;anything associated with uranium and its use in the nuclear programme&nbsp;will be done in conformity with the "international obligations and rules of transparency, covering the entire production cycle".&nbsp;
