The apex court scheduled the next hearing for November 20. Mehta said in his argument, “First of all, that myth to be busted. This was not a spontaneous riot. After three years of investigation that has involved the recording of evidence from a number of eyewitnesses and the verification of the authenticity of video recordings showing the accused inciting a mob of students and shouting anti-India slogans in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus, the Special Cell of Delhi Police’s anti-terrorism wing has filed the charge sheet at the Patiala House Court in Delhi.&nbsp;

The chargesheet names Kanhaiya Kumar, the former JNU Students’ Union President, and seven others including Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya of sedition and conspiracy.&nbsp;

Kanhaiya was in Tihar Jail for two weeks in 2016 in the same connection and was later granted interim bail. Coinciding with the JNU incident, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who was party vice president then, was shown black flags when he went to attend a “Save JNU” rally and express solidarity with the students accused of challenging India’s sovereignty and integrity by raising slogans to break the country.&nbsp;

From their posture, it is obvious that the opposition parties have decided to use the JNU campus as a fertile ground to take on the ruling BJP on the issue of nationalism in the coming parliamentary election. Instead of allowing the police to handle the matter as a law and order issue, the opposition parties are playing with fire as they have failed to denounce those who raised anti-India slogans and wanted to declare terrorist Afzal Guru a martyr. It is not a minor issue and has serious implications.

Earlier, there was allegedly a celebration by a section of students and some outsiders in JNU when in a Maoist attack 76 CRPF men were killed near Chintalnar village in Dantewada district in 2010. Three years ago, there was this rally of anti-national elements shouting slogans against India and in support of “Azadi” of Kashmir. This event, organised to protest against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in defiance of a University order denying permission for any such activity, was led by Kanhaiya, who as a student leader has been associated with All India Students Federation (AISF), a left-wing students organisation linked with the Communist Party of India (CPI).

Significantly, the Leftists have commanded the students’ politics in JNU for several decades. It was only in 1978 that their stranglehold had got broken with the historic victory of the 'Free Thinkers' in the JNUSU election. To understand the hegemony of the Left in JNU, one would have to take a close look at the modus operandi of the students’ wings of the CPI and CPI(M). As JNU alumni, one recalls how in the late ‘70s, the SFI and AISF cadres (senior students) were following a time tested strategy to flock around the new students from the word go, i.e. from the time they landed for their entrance test.&nbsp;

After befriending and winning their confidence, these students used to temporarily host a large number of the new students in their hostel rooms; they acted as guides and took them around the library, canteen and different administrative blocks and centres scattered around the old campus.

After that, they followed the strategy of brainwashing and bombarding the ‘freshers’or the newcomers with Leftist jargons and theory to convince them about the "inevitability of class war, and the uprising by the proletariat against the exploiting ruling elite, the capitalists and the bourgeoisie”.

JNU sedition row: Police chargesheet is backed with firm evidence

Delhi Police on Monday filed a 12-page charge sheet in connection with the 2016 JNU sedition case. JNU student leader Umar Khalid has filed a complaint with the Delhi Police that he and Gujarat's Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani had received death threats from a man who identified himself as fugitive gangster Ravi Pujari, a senior official said today.

Khalid tweeted that he has asked for police protection.

"Filed a complaint with @DelhiPolice regarding Ravi Pujari's death threat to Jignesh and me. He said that I am on his HIT LIST! I have asked for police protection, given the fact that this is the same person who had previously also issued similar threats of killing me in Feb 2016 (sic)," he said.

Yesterday, Khalid approached the police with a complaint over the threats and a case was registered, the police official said, adding that they are investigating the matter.

The student leader said that he was informed by Mevani about the threats, and he has not received any call himself till now.

"Mevani has been receiving death threats for the last two-three days. In one of the calls he received, the caller had mentioned my name too. He had mentioned that if we don't stop giving speeches we would be killed.

"Mevani informed me and I approached the police. A case has been registered and they said that they will do a threat assessment and take a call on providing police protection," Khalid told PTI.

Mevani too had alleged yesterday that he has received death threats from Pujari.

When asked whether the calls were being received in relation to the arrests made by the Pune Police on June 6 in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon violence, he said, "I am not aware about the context. Pujari has not mentioned that he was calling in that context. I don't feel it is a coincidence that the calls (to Mevani) started coming from that day (the arrests were made)."

Elgar Parishad, organised to commemorate 200 years of the Koregaon Bhima battle, was held on December 31 at Shaniwarwada. It was attended by Mevani, Khalid along with Rohit Vemula's mother Radhika Vemula and Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh President Prakash Ambedkar.

In 2016, Khalid's father Syed Qasim Illyas Rasool had filed a police complaint, claiming that he has received a phone call "threatening to kill" his son if he doesn't leave the country.

This incident had happened when the police was looking for Khalid in connection with the sedition case filed against him, former JNU students' union president Kanhaiya Kumar, and Anirban Bhattacharya for allegedly organising an event against the hanging of 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.

Guru was hanged in 2013.

And till the very last minute, because of the lack of permission from the police, it was uncertain whether Mevani would attend the rally.&nbsp;PTI however reported that the police and the rally&#39;s organisers came to some sort of agreement later.&nbsp;

At Parliament Street, Mevani said he would stand against the politics of hatred and stick to constitutional values and the &quot;politics of love&quot;, similarly to what Congress President Rahul Gandhi had said after the Gujarat polls.

According to the complaint, it was Mewani who told people to come on street and retaliate which is why tensions erupted between Dalita and right-wing groups. &nbsp;

Following their alleged involvement, the Mumbai police on Thursday cancelled an event at the Bhaidas Hall for All India National Students&#39; Summit, which was scheduled to be attended by the two leaders.&nbsp;

The cancellation further triggered minor clashes between student groups and the police.&nbsp;

Left with no option, the police forcibly removed the students to avoid any untoward incident.&nbsp;Several of them have been taken into preventive custody.

Despite heavy police presence outside&nbsp;Ramjas&nbsp;College,&nbsp;violence broke out again&nbsp;at 1 pm&nbsp;with the ABVP activists clashing with the police and students from the opposing group, including those from&nbsp;Left wing groups&nbsp;like All India Students&#39; Association (AISA)&nbsp;and Students&#39;&nbsp;Federation of&nbsp;India (SFI), who had gathered in the university to protest yesterday&#39;s violent disruption of a seminar held at the college.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&quot;Many students remained trapped inside the&nbsp;college campus and could&nbsp;leave only after 5 pm under heavy police protection,&quot; said a faculty member who did not wish to be named.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The fight, however, seems to have escalated much beyond the scope of a contentious seminar. Delhi University professor&nbsp;Prashanto&nbsp;Chakraborty was&nbsp;severely thrashed by ABVP supporters at a protest held in the campus&nbsp;against Tuesday&#39;s violence.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Several students and teachers have also received injuries, while a few journalists also reported being heckled and pushed around with their cameras and phones being damaged. Ramjas&nbsp;College principal&nbsp;Prasad had apparently refused to grant permission to invite Khalid to the campus thrice, but since the students and teachers were&nbsp;reportedly&nbsp;keen, he gave in. But no written permission was issued.&nbsp;

On being contacted, Prasad told WION: &quot;Academics should confront ideas, not people.&quot;&nbsp;

While some say this is just a manifestation of two camps, one Right-leaning, the other Left-aligned, trying to seize control of the prestigious institution since Principal Prasad is set to retire&nbsp;by February-end, others say&nbsp;these allegations&nbsp;are specious.&nbsp;&quot;Some teachers in the&nbsp;History&nbsp;and English departments are perceived by some Right-leaning students&nbsp;as Leftist, but most of us are just liberals. "Ramjas college cannot see the likes of Umar Khalid talking here. He talks of dividing the country. We were going to hold a silent priest against this and alerted the college principal about it," college president and ABVP member Yogit Rathi told the media. Ramjas College authorities said they were forced to cancel the event. College principal Rajendra Prasad told the media that the two JNU students’ lectures were cancelled because of protests as well as advice from police that the situation could go out of hand. (WION)
