China on Monday lashed out at the United States saying that Washington made "false" claims about Beijing being on the brink of supplying arms and ammunition to Russia to support its war against Ukraine.

"It is the United States and not China that is endlessly shipping weapons to the battlefield," said China's foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin, while speaking about the US claims.

"We urge the United States to earnestly reflect on its own actions, and do more to alleviate the situation, promote peace and dialogue, and stop shifting blame and spreading false information," he added.

The statement of the Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson came after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, in an interview with CBS, said that China was "considering providing lethal support" to Moscow ranging "from ammunition to the weapons themselves".

Similar comments were made by him in a series of interviews from Germany, where he took part in the Munich Security Conference on Saturday and met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi.

The accusations of Blinken came in the wake of the straining relationship between the two nations after Washington shot down what it claimed to be a Chinese spy balloon.

Concerns have been raised about China's deepening ties with Russia even after the conflict but Wang Yi maintained that Beijing was only playing a constructive role, and firmly supported the idea of dialogue to resolve conflict.

"We do not accept the United States' finger-pointing on China-Russia relations, let alone coercion and pressure. China's direction on the Ukraine issue can be summed up in one phrase, which is urging peace and promoting dialogue," said spokesman Wang Wenbin.

Russia-Ukraine War: WION's ground report from Ukraine-Poland border

Nearly a year since Russian forces rolled into Ukraine, there are no real signs of a way out of the conflict. Neither side appears primed for an outright military victory, and progress at the negotiating table seems just as unlikely. Watch WION's ground report from Lviv in Ukraine.

A report by Reuters, citing an anonymous political source, said that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will travel to Kyiv for a visit and meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on Monday (February 20). It is reported that the source made this claim on Sunday. The Italian PM’s visit comes amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and days before the conflict will mark its first anniversary.

Meloni, who took office in October, last year has been a firm supporter of Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict despite disputes over the issue within her right-wing ruling coalition and divided public opinion. Earlier this month, Italy and France said that they have finalised technical talks for the joint delivery of a SAMP/T-MAMBA air defence system to Kyiv in the spring of this year. The European-made defence system is said to be the only one that can intercept ballistic missiles. Additionally, it can also track dozens of targets and intercept 10 at the same time.

Notably, Berlusconi’s party Forza Italia, which he leads, is a member of EPP as well as Meloni’s ruling coalition. The comments in question include the former Italian PM saying that he would not meet Zelensky if he were still in power as he blames the Ukrainian President for the ongoing conflict with Russia.

He also said, “So I judge, very, very negatively, the behaviour of this gentleman” referring to Zelensky. Days after which EPP President Manfred Weber, in a tweet said, “Following the remarks by Silvio Berlusconi on Ukraine we decided to cancel our study days in Naples. Russia- Ukraine war: One year into war, who stands where?

In an interview with BBC, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky said that he is not willing to give up even a single territory of his country as part of any peace deal with Russia.

Zelensky said that conceding territory would mean Moscow could "keep coming back", and added that Western weapons are likely to bring peace closer. He further said that the predicted spring offensive had already started, while speaking to the BBC, in the wake of one year of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

"Russian attacks are already happening from several directions," he added. However, he expressed belief in the Ukrainian forces' capabilities to keep resisting the advances of Russia till a counter-offensive is launched by them.

"Of course, modern weapons speed up peace. Weapons are the only language Russia understands," Zelensky said while speaking to the BBC.

Although it is not clear when Zelensky spoke with BBC, he also talked about Belarus leader Alexander Lukashenko's chances to wage war alongside the troops of Russia if the border is crossed by a single Ukrainian soldier.

"I hope (Belarus) won't join (the war). If it does, we will fight and we will survive,” Zelensky said. He added that it will be a “huge mistake” to permit Russia to use Belarus as a staging post for launching an attack again.

On Thursday, when Lukashenko was asked about allowing his country to be used as a staging ground for invasion by Russia's invasion, he had said, “Yes, I'm ready. I'm ready to provide (territory) again. I'm also ready to wage war, alongside the Russians, from the territory of Belarus. But only if someone - even a single soldier - enters our territory from there (Ukraine) with weapons to kill my people."

Talking about the tactics of Russia in the war in the BBC interview, Zelensky called them "valueless". "The way they destroyed everything. If their soldiers received [and carried out] those orders, that means they share those same values,” he said.

"Today, our survival is our unity. I believe Ukraine is fighting for its survival. We chose this path. We want security guarantees. Any territorial compromises would make us weaker as a state. It's not about compromise itself. Why would we be afraid of that? We have millions of compromises in life every day. The question is with whom? With Putin? No. Because there's no trust.
